One of the details I liked the most is how every time Luffy touched the ground it felt like jelly, and you could see that it wasn't on purpose, he passively affected the environment.

Kaido slowly getting after being punched was my least favorite part. It happened like 7 times
Watched this with my 11yr old nephew who just caught up to the anime a few weeks ago and he was so happy. He was so hyped and laughing with Luffy and I'm just happy I'm able to experience this with him. Specially since I used to watch One Piece with him when he was a baby. Hats off to the voice actors and animators coz the passion was oozing in this episode.
I’m in my early twenties and I too was laughing with luffy. It was an awesome experience.
I sincerely hope you skipped the worst Sanji bits while watching with your baby nephew.

I enjoyed Orochi burning far more in the anime lol. I think it's a great chapter, even better than the manga one. Gear 5 is more fun to watch.
I think the fan base as a whole was expecting too much from this one episode. This isn’t the end of gear 5. This was its anime debut. The next few episodes are where the good stuff truly lies. I did agree with the sound effects though. There were times where it did feel like noise bombardment but i didn’t mind too much. This episode was an intro to gear 5 and tying up some loose ends with other stuff going on so that next is more about Kaido v Luffy. There will still be other stuff going on but not as much and the fight kicks up a couple of notches.
There were definitely parts I liked better in anime, like the increased bounciness in ground and environment, the extra animations in deflecting Kaido's blast and other parts. The music! It was all awesome I agree. It's fair to say there is still more to the fight, I'm super excited for finale and⚡part too. Cannot wait for finish tho

Don’t forget Toei dropped a whole trailer for this 2 weeks before the episode was aired. It got over 10 million views. The fans saying that this would surpass SSJ we’re smoking something though
I hated that episode, had so much potential, but the turn it go garbage, animation is real crap
Hiyori's line about the dawn will come and Kozuki is a clan that always keeps its promise and the next shot being luffy leaping infront of the moon was epic in my opinion
And the anime did great with her scenes as well , what killed the moment was that it was unfortunately sandwiched between Gear 5 stuff , had it been in a different episode it would have been amazing !!
It would have worked better at the beginning of the episode then cut over to the luffy stuff
I liked it where it was. I think if they didn't use a repeat of the same animation it would have felt more awesome though.
It’s really just about how long they made that part. They REAAALLLY stretched it. What it adds to the story is great, but it could’ve been half the length.
I think no one will mind in the future, it's just that because we now have to wait another week for 1072 people are more annoyed than they would be if it was at another episode
It served it's purpose because Orochi was talking about how even if he died then Kaido still needed to be defeated. So having that then cut to Luffy man handling Kaido shows that he indeed will be defeated.

Yes, I was very disappointed that they put a full minute flashback of 2 episodes earlier, I just skipped forward and was at first frustrated at the flashback then livid at how long it went on for

@@aryanapostle We can't really blame the anime for doing that.. it was literally EXACTLY what happened in the manga.
I had all these same complaints, and I feel like with all the discussion around Gear 5, they really shot themselves in the foot this episode. While Gear 5 itself was INCREDIBLE and everything I wanted it to be, the pacing and other issues really made it feel like Toei were doing their best to kill their own hype during what should’ve been their crown jewel. Even if 1045/1072 is much closer along the lines of what people were wanting and waiting for, this is the debut episode. In 5 years this will be seen as THE Gear 5 episode… and it really wasn’t even a top 5 episode of the arc so far, and that’s just a bit disappointing no matter how great Gear 5 looked.
I agree . what baffles me is the people who are saying this episode was perfect and a 10/10. they either have low standards and impressed by anything or its blind following and denial.
Yeah i think 1072 will be more what people expected but it doesnt excuse the issues with thos episode
@@forevertipsy3550 I've been met with a lot of backlash myself and have been called a hater for giving a valid critique of something that was supposed to be a lot better than it actually was. I'm not saying this episode was bad, it just didn't meet my expectations and the hype surrounding this moment didn't quite line up with what we got. I would personally rate this a 6, or maybe 7 out of 10 if im being generous
I agree but if you also use common sense, you would have known yourself the real gear 5 “showcase” is ep 1072… There was no way Toei were gonna mix luffy going all out whilst doing the hiyori/orochi scene at the same time😂 they just follow the manga then cut it off before the actual showcase hence making 1072 an actual introduction to gear 5 rather than what people were expecting him to do in their minds.

It's like you took the thoughts out of my mind while watching this episode. Overall I thought it was amazing but felt blue balled when the whole Hiyori and Orochi scene happened, I knew it had to happened, but makes me SUPER excited for next weeks episode because there are no loose ends to worry about now, the only thing left to happen is this fight to conclude between Luffy and Kaido. I bet next weeks episode might even be better, I hope it is, either way One Piece PEAK!

I am super worried about anime only's right now, because I gotta say, if they're going by 1 episode per chapter like they've been doing, the only episode that'll 100% be JUST Luffy vs Kaido will be the next one. Despite what most of you all think, not everything is wrapped up yet, and very technically this is the end of the fight. Like... fight probably has 4-5 more episodes left. The chapters of the fight yet to be adapted are 1045-1049. Last episode covered 1044 from start to finish. But yeah, Onigashima is still above the capitol, the entire island is still pretty much on fire, and there are still like one and a half flashback sequences that are in manga (let alone toei's shenanigans)... it's gonna be peak anime for sure, but I really wouldn't get my hopes up for a fully uninterrupted fight.
you forgot about something bad in between, the worst and most plot hole fight in history of one piece: law/kid vs bigmom...

First Robin received a epic new form with Demonio and now Luffy with the most ridiculous power in Gear 5. Wano had some very good highs. Hiyori scene was also really good and juxtaposed the scenes with Luffy.
Yeah I can appreciate what they were going for, and their hands were kinda tied. It's only natural that most people were too hyped for Gear 5 to really pay attention to anything else. I'm guilty of that myself haha

@@MelvinNL87 I was only speaking in regards to new “forms/transformations” not necessarily a strict powerup. But it’s true our favorite characters got a nice Yonko crew level buff.
I love how Overtaken was used in the music. It not only fits perfectly, it musically ties every moment it played back to G5
The whole music-score through the episode is so perfect. It just a 'One piece OST banger'-medley, remixed to the drums of liberation.

It's interesting to hear you described the drums as less epic but more party like.
I'm from Trinidad and Tobago and we have African and Indian influences in our music. The drums they used reminded me of the drums we play in the stands during sporting events. As soon as I heard the beat my heart started racing almost as though I was getting ready to see my favourite football team rush down the field attempting to score a goal.
It felt very epic to me.
I thoroughly enjoyed it.
As a Looney Tunes kid, I absolutely LOVED this episode, never more have I been this excited and hyped for something in an Anime in a LONG time.
10000% agreed. Blending these animation styles together has to be such an incredibly involved and difficult process to make work, and despite a few nitpicky issues for the most part I think they did an INCREDIBLE job and 1072 is going to be insane.
As an animator, those gear fifth scenes looked super fun. Crazy action is actually much easier than slow/solid scenes because you can be more loose with the Inbetweens. I was mostly just sad with how much they reuse the same animation. I also think they could have pulled back the action just a tad for better visual understanding. It was pretty difficult to follow at times. I'm thinking next episode will probably less chaotic and I'm looking forward to that.
I'm so glad that I'm not the only one who felt this way about this episode. You and I have pretty much the same grievances on the episode. That being said, I have to say I had a smile as big as Joy boys the entire time.
I like to think that since the Nika fruit has a will of it’s own it also has its own haki. And that’s why Luffy’s haki was 2 different colors after the transformation. The gold-ish lightning being Nika’s. Could also explain the solo sky split. Course it’s just a theory.

yellow is ryuo red is conqueror haki, there's nothing called devil fruit haki
I honestly loved that they didn't have anyone really acknowledge the cartoony nature of everything in this episode. Kaido's doing the eye-popping thing and the "bump-on-the-head" gag from old cartoons without a shred of acknowledgement, making it feel as though this transformation is seamlessly affecting the world and people around them and will only be noticed after it's been around for a good bit.

Bro that actually cracked me up. This is why the animation for me in this episode is an 11/10, the animators were given an assignment, and they soared and nailed what gear 5 is all about.

Man, the way they animated the Haki with the rubber ground made 5' Luffy feel like he was 5000lbs. It made him feel so heavy and intimidating, I love it
The fact that squash and stretch is a principle of animation ties so well together with the early gomu gomu power that is just genious
I don't know if it was conditioning or great voice work/animation but I was smiling as wide as JoyBoy the whole episode. Listening to Luffys laugh was intoxicating
Same! The overall tone of the episode kept it flowing smooth over any of the detractions. Besides I needed a moment to catch my breath.
I think my favorite moment is when Luffy sends that blast breath back at Kaido and we see Kaido been charred black and then he exhales black smoke, like from old cartoons. Makes me laugh every time. And Luffy clapping his feet. I was hoping for the William Hanna Tom-scream though. Maybe next episode when Kaido starts doing some damage back.
I adored when we got the still painting of kaidos eyes wide and him just go "HNM?!" right before it hits him
Gear 5 is probably the best transformation for Luffy. Such a creative mind using an otherwise completely useless and restrictive DF. Gear 5 was amazing, Hype and very likeable
Luffy has always had this limitless creative mind to overcome any situation. You give a guy like that reality warping powers it’s no wonder the world government considers him a threat

a creative mind would definitely get the most potential out of it but it wouldnt be useless with someone who's not that creative. Im pretty sure everyone predicted him affecting his surroundings when he awakens and everyone was thinking he could be a full giant when he first used gear 3rd.

@@kklh7918 Naruto's best form was sage mode. Not even Baryon mode. It isn't always the case of power = better and sage mode drip was ON POINT. It should've been the peak. Close second is SO6P and third is the raw kurama chakra mode in Naruto (not shippuden). This is my opinion really. Baryon mode is not bad but it is outclassed by every other form.
The Hiyori scene is so beautiful. The way they animated the panel of her crying and the voice acring was reaĺly good. I get the idea of placing it here because of Oden and his ideals, the tone and hype of Gear 5 is just too much
The voice actress KILLED IT!!! Especially the laughing after Luffy split the sky himself...sinister yet joyful (idk how you do that)
Adored the episode, can't wait for the next one. I will say that it is stated in chapter 1044 that his body is "exponentially strengthened" so I don't think it's fair to say that the form doesn't also increased his out-put alongside his freedom.

I thought exactly the same things as you! The obviously repeated sequence was really noticeable, the eye pops looked way better animated, and the Boro breath being reflected looked good but was also like watching a shaky cam film where so much stuff happenend it was visually messy, even tho it was clearly good animation, i am also looking forward to next weeks more crazy stuff
It was a mixture of very good animation and very bad.
I absolutely loved how totally overboard the animation went with the final shots of the Gear 5 reveal (with Luffy bouncing around, lying on the ground laughing). They added a ton of extra frames there with lots of different coloring so that our eyes actually couldn't quite catch everything - and we noticed. This made Luffy seem even more mysterious, mischievious and intangible in that form than his already very impressive feats. The cartoon effects - and especially the "squeaky trombone"-sound when Kaido "went down" after accidentally roasting himself - were also super funny and genuinely made me laugh.
A detail I like is throughout the episode, there's a subtle filter to give it the cartoon feel. Hard to notice but gives it the Tom and Jerry vibes Oda was looking for.
Absolutely loved the "Loony Toons" style that Gear 5 turned everything into. It fits perfectly with Luffy's attitude and his powers.
he truly is bringing joy to the people. Love how animators kinda brought this aspect of a character into life by bringing joy to the viewers.
Personally I really enjoyed the "overuse" of SFX. It played well with the goofy theme of the form. This whole episode had me giggling with joy.

I felt the same way. Also there were so many shaky frames, indiscernible frames and too much movement. Maybe that can be explained as he discovered his gear 5 for the first time so he's in a "high" state just like Gojo Vs Toji 😅

I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt this way!! Even if there still aren't many of us lol. I'm glad others loved the episode, but it felt so hard to track the action at parts. It really kept me from enjoying the episode very much, it's distracting and breaks the fluidity of the fight for me. I'm just glad I read the manga, or I might not have been able to follow what was going on.
I think there could have been a really good way to mash up Hiyori’s arc with the gear 5th stuff if it came after gear 5th and it looked like she was really going to have the tables turned on her. like gear fifth is reverberating into the world to spread liberation.
given that Luffy "died" in the previous episode, my opinion would be to do Hyori's arc first, right up to but just before Orochi cathing fire, to give it suspense, then flash to shots of Nami, Chopper, Sanji, all being upset, crying or worried, and then either the narrator, or better yet, total silence, except the drums, and zunesha pronouncing joyboy has returned (I think Joyboy was a nickname), then we go into Luffy's arc with Gear 5 as the triumphant return. Either way would be good for splitting up the two arcs completely
what i loved the most was that it brought to life exactly what gear 5 was supposed to bring to life that luffy doesnt realise but is totally effecting everything around him, even when he held kaido to slam him looks like he held a big balloon and the effects the eyes popping out the rubbery environment and luffy having fun with his own heartbeat IT WAS A COMPLETE RIDE
Liam the awakening gives his rubber body more strength. That was in the Manga. Pretty sure his imagination and freedom weren't the only things powered up by the awakening.
He also casually blitzes awakened Lucci, basically confirming his speed is increased as well
I thought the non action scenes (with hiyori and orochi) were pretty average, and they dragged some stuff out (playing that 1 scene 3 times, flashback). BUT the action was really well animated, and the compositing/photography team (not sure which one) did a really good job with the filters/coloring.
I really wished they adapted at least 2 chapters for this episode tho, it's a special occasion after all.
I dont even recall the last time the op anime adapted more than 1 full chapter. I think we still had endings then for the series
I think Hiyori's scene was fantastic and her line about the dawn coming, followed with Luffy silhouetted against the moon was perfection. Her VA's acting was incredible, too.
The CP0 flashback could easily have been cashed in for a little more time spent on the crazier frames to give them maybe a second to breathe so we can make out all the zaniness better - and the flashes from all the previous gears before the full Gear 5 official reveal. That shit flew by SO fast - an extra second here and there would have been great so we can at least see without having to pause ever half a second. >.
@@7thlittleleopard7 I should have clarified, I was only talking about the visuals (mainly animation) not the voice acting. Though you're right Luffy silhouetted against the moon when referring to the dawn (+ the animation for that flame thing Kanjuro made) was pretty cool
9:45 for me too. But i think they added this because we know that gear 5 is a HUGE thing and it's almost world shaking in the community all across the world so i think they added kaido's last attack flashback is to show a glimpse of what happened to target the new audience, we know that some new people like the friends who never watched and the curious people who want to know what the hype is all about might watch the episode so i think they targeted them as well as saving time as you mentioned
I know you talked about your dislike of the haki stuff, but I think his haki turning golden was a honestly amazing additon. It added to the scene a lot to me, as if his joy itself was seeping into his haki, his freedom not just breaking the world, but breaking his haki
I remember those days when we were discussing what the gooey haired luffy was. Was it resin? Another form of rubber? Was it gear 5th now (back then)? And here we are, witnessing gear 5th's animation. Just. Wow.
I love the use of Haki here and the sound effects, chaotic camera, reality bending moments, and overuse of cartoon effects. They make PERFECT sense because this is his first time using this power. He doesnt even know really what he is doing fully. If the fruit itself does have some type of mind of its own, Luffy may be fighting against this other personality (Similar to the nine tails and Naruto). I think as luffy trains and learns more about Gear 5, the overall feel will become more controlled and the sound effects/camera more purposeful then passive.
I finally got to watch your manga episodes about this from a year ago! And now this commentary on the anime is well done as well! As an animator, I watched the episode 5 times simply to see Luffy “move”! I get the nit-picks but the hype and anticipation surrounding the moment have to be factored in and the anime doesn’t disappoint! I even thought I would start reading the manga but the black and white panels left me wanting! I can’t wait to watch the next episode!
What i really like about all this is Kaido's reactions 'till the end. He doesn't get why Luffy's fruit is affecting him, coz it's shouldn't be possible, yet it is happening. The eyes, the cartoonish burning and what comes next, he just stares at Luffy (back in serious/normal mode) being like "w.t.f?". Until his demise, he's just confused like we are. "What's THAT on the roof? What's going on? Who are you? Why is my body expanding? I am Kaidou. Why am I treated like a little snake thing?" i just love it!
The animation was so good and so perfectly in line with what Gear 5th should be, and the fact you just can't get away from this episode without knowing *exactly* what they were going for is a testament to the animators' hard work paying off in real time. I did find the sequence where Luffy deflects the Blast Breath to be pretty hard to follow, though, and that continues from an ongoing trend since Wano of some scenes being (in my opinon) a bit too visually cluttered and overanimated. If they slowed it down and stabilized it a bit, maybe focused more on the impact of the breath against the rubbery wall than Luffy struggling, I think it would have been a lot better.
I see what you mean about it being a good blend of modern and classic cartoon animation, which is 100% what I wanted out of Gear 5th, but for me it didn't actually achieve that so much as it felt like standard "the animators worked overtime this week" post-WCI One Piece animation until we cut back to Kaido. The implication of cartoon shenanigans is there, but it doesn't actually *feel* as whimsical or free-spirited as most of the episode does.
Totally agree about the scene of him running around and jumping and enjoying his new powers to be absolutely INCREDIBLE (despite the repeats). No powerup has ever felt more like Luffy personified than Gear 5, and in that respect this was a really great episode to showcase his new abilities, and I'm hoping they'll knock it out of the park next week.
There are two parts of the transformation that I thought was epic as hell, when the screen turn dark and you can see the redness in his eyes and the smile. That part gave me goosebumps.
The second part that I like is when he was jumping up and down on the hard floor like a trampoline as the camera came closer to him. Soooo dope
I would actually say the drums were just right in my opinion. I think they give the essence of this new gear. the drums give off a sense of liberation and happiness/joy.
This is probably my most rewatched, standalone episode. I couldn't stop smiling and laughing when Luffy was on screen and I loved the Hiyori scene. For me, it was like a palate cleanser. A moment to stop, breathe, remember the stakes (Kaido and Orochi are vile people, even if they look silly right now) then set up for 1072.
The rest of the critiques I agree with. Still, I couldn't help but smile almost the whole time

Ruffys / Luffys big Haki thing was just epic in my opinion. I was just smiling thinking "man he is just so ridiculous powerfull. Also the whole thing with him grabbing the ground to throw Kaidos beam back was to much for me.
One thing I liked about the chapter though, was the rushed flashback to all the other gears and when he used them for the first time. It was such a good way to remember all the other gears and how far he's come since then.
I do agree with you on the flashback with the CP0 agent mingling in the fight. That was a buzzkill for me, as it just happened.
What makes this a great episode for me personally, is that it made me laugh. A lot. Having a heavy depression, makes it hard for me to laugh and feel amused/happy, so to feel that way after weeks of not really feeling it, was so nice. It's why I will re-watch the episode again and to take in what happened, bc a lot of things was shown that I barely noticed at the first watch.
Anyway, thanks for all the great One Piece content you push out. I love your energy. Keep up the good work.

I honestly was soooo hyped about the Episode and wasnt dissapointed or anything, but had mixed feelings when the Screentime for G5 Luffy was cut short for some Flashback and Hyori Stuff, aswell as the tripple used animation... So Chapeau to you for pointing it out!

After watching BDA Laws video where he goes essentially frame by frame of the episode, I ended up appreciating it a lot more. I almost think that the episode would have benefited from slowing down the animation so we can appreciate all the cartoonish movements that they added

That's exactly why everyone is being harsher on the pacing and reuse of animation and flashbacks more so than normal, it's ridiculous they shoved shit like that into an episode this special when they could have drawn out the good parts and made them even better. The animation was SO GOOD, but the talent was wasted.
The one thing I like about the quick montage flashback of their fight is that it juxtaposes well with our eyes are processing. Luffy vs Kaido has been brutal from their first encounter in act 1. And Luffy is still fighting with the same intensity he has from when he first met Kaido. He knows what’s on the line, but he’s still having fun in fighting his way.

I thinks this is the first time I realize that I’m lucky having watch this episode while I’m still pretty young. This was all pure hype for me and I think the fact that I have less experience in media allowed me to just fully enjoy the hype and not pick up on any mistakes. It was an absolutely amazing experience for me
I think people should in general not be critiquing things like the specifics of the animation or sound effects. It doesn’t matter exactly how good it looks, what matters is how crazy hype and all around fun the episode was.
I'm 34 and loved it. It's exactly how it should be based on the manga. Been reading one piece since I was 13.
It's a shame that such a pinnacle of an episode could not get a short break from toeis greed.
Also the Hiyori scene would be much more fitting before the joyboy reveal
Side note: You mentioned how Gear 5 doesn't increase Luffy's strength, but it is a Zoan fruit and Zoan fruits do increase physical strength and stamina. Kaido said as much. I could be wrong though. I misremember things often.
The Zoan fruit itself is adding strength, not the form/Gear that he's in. If that makes any sense. Like he's always at peak strength, and each form/Gear just let's him utilize it in different ways.
Drums of Liberation theme and the remixed OG music was way more than I could have hoped for. Just absolutely perfect.
Funny he talks about the DBZ sound effects, I have the same thought whenever there is sword fighting and the Samurai Jack sound effects hit hard haha
One thing I just realized was that when Luffy goes big and gets the muscles is that he has Garps body structure, which probably shows he sees Garp as the pinnacle of raw strength and muscles which was sick

Luffy's gear 5 ability is all about imagination, and so it would make sense that his imagination would determine what he looks like.
Since Luffy wants to be strong, he takes the appearance of the strongest people he can think of, garp and Rayleigh, who both have white hair
Clearly, gear 5 Luffy has white hair because Luffy thinks people with white hair are strong
For sure the action sequences between Kaido and Luffy were unreal. The animators snapped. They killed it 🔥
wish they could have at least made some of it clearer tbh. If i didn't read the manga, the part where Luffy grabbed the ground and bounced the breath attack would have made little sense. but yeah episode was nice.

You explained hiyori and orochi problem perfectly, watching the episode I found the scene amazing and captured the death of orochi greatly with the final bit of kanjuro's souls being led to his masters voice
I was honestly really disappointed with this episode. I didn't really like the reused animation + flashbacks then how Hiyori took up half the episode. Then on top of that, the hype G5 received for the past year really had my expectations high for this episode just to get like 2 mins of Luffy vs Kaido. Before anyone says it, yes I am aware 1044 had only a few pages of G5 being shown but because of the hype for the past year I just expected more...at least 5-7 mins at least...
I honestly feel like they should of either made this a full G5 ep or have the Hiyori stuff be first (instead of the middle of the ep) which is then followed by all of the G5 stuff. This way it wouldn't have intruded on the moment while also being paced a bit better at least to me. Hope the next episode is much better.

I agree. I don't mind not having a fight in the same episode, because that's how the manga was presented. But they reused a lot of animation. The problem is that you cannot really adapt one chapter in one episode, because then you need to put a lot of filler. There wasn't filler per se in this episode, but they had to reuse the same animation for what it felt like an eternity.
And the hiyori stuff was just painful to watch
The chapter had three pages of Gear 5 and six pages of Hiyori, it was always going to be a similar adaptation. Honestly, we got more Gear 5 than I was expecting and I was not disappointed -- but If next episode is filled with flashbacks and filler, THEN I will be annoyed, as 1072 is adapted from a manga chapter that is literally entirely Gear 5 vs Kaido.

I don't really care about how they pace the episode, the important thing is that the animation is good.

The Haki Luffy displayed after he transfored as Nika was definitely Shanks level and probably more.
I am such a huge fan of cartoon physics and tropes (or more specifically, western animation tropes that originated primarily in the golden age of animation), so seeing Gear 5 be brought to life with such gorgeous animation was truly something to behold. Also, that one frame of Kaido's derpy face is my new favorite frame of anything from One Piece.

I’m glad you’re honest with your experience with Gear 5, my friends and I were quite bummed when we saw the same scene 3 times and flashbacks, but the fight we did get was so so good.
This is an episode that I think One Pace could really do a lot to improve. Especially for Hyori's scene, which is a legitimately great moment that needs to be moved somewhere and trimmed a bit, so that it can just be its own thing
Hey I actually liked Hiyori’s little bit. This episode felt like a 1:1 of Chapter 1044 including Orochi’s final death starting. While I agree on the reused animation and CP0 flashback complaint, the rest makes this a 8/10 for me.
I rarely agree with a UA-camr on everything they said in one video, however I am so glad you managed to put all of my thoughts into words. This is exactly how I felt during this and it makes me a bit sad. Why couldn't they have made this experience as awesome as the manga chapter was for me and it would have been so easy to just have one single episode without fking fillers
One detail I loved is that at times Luffy's laugh would mimic Woody Woodpecker, it's such a small thing but it shows how much thought the anime put into Gear 5

i cried during Hiyori’s scene. I think the timing is well done. She faces the man who has caused her and her family so much suffering and as she watches him die and says “the dawn will surely come” it transitions to luffy bein goofyyyy and he can do everything he wanted to doooo and we get the iconic joyboy shot ! it’s a really great way to weave together the themes of freedom in both stories
They sound like the drums we hear on the Carnival here in Brazil, ABSOLUTELY loved it
Favourite part was the choice for the drums of liberation being a version of the song that they usually play for big scenes like for example the walk to Arlong park, it brought it full circle when they did that, the drums of liberations have played a few times
I loved episode 1071 so much, i rewatched it everyday since it came out and i intend to keep that going until next Saturday.
The drums reminded me of like a Mayan version of that Color Purple song "Celie Shaves Mr./Scarification" I was feelin the fuck out of it.
I love your comment about the voice actor's performance when Luffy puts on muscle. It made gear 5th for me in that you can really see Luffy thinking "More muscle!" and out pops more muscle. Amazing submersion and makes up for those three repeated shots which made me think I accidently rewound the video
Dub only watcher and non-manga reader here, I do enjoy watching these episodes of yours because I get to tease myself with what will be coming up eventually. Currently about to start whole cake island (the funimation/crunchyroll thing delayed my weekly viewing so now I have to do a major catchup) and just knowing that this stuff is coming is going to keep me coming back for more. I can also see the reasons for the repeated anime content as two separate things:
Firstly the anime needs a good spot to break at for the next episode. I know that sounds pedantic but one slow episode so that the next is not broken up as well makes sense to me. Lessen one episode so that you don't have to lessen two just to meet the episode timing. It's when multiple episodes run concurrently with no progress that things become problematic.
Secondly the dub is rapidly catching up to the Sub and potentially aiming to eventually become a simuldub or at least close to it. To that end I suspect the studio felt like putting in a new ending and spreading the content over more episodes meant that the Dub could catch up easier with less work. Less story content and less animation in general means that Dub watchers won't feel as left out and once everything syncs up again then the pace can pick back up and we can zoom off toward the conclusion.
I doubt my reasoning's are the ones that are in use, no-one does things just for the sake of Dub watchers, but there's my 2 cents on the subject.

Liam @5:00 Toei Animation Used the DBZ sound effects because the voice actor of Luffy is Krillen from Dragoon Ball. Most anime studio does this Japan, for respect and homage to the actor and animators for their past work or current work in other anime. I believe in Dragon Ball Super, Krillen’s ringtone is the One Piece theme song.
11:27 dead on. That was my immediate thought as well. And I give them no benefit of the doubt. They definitely did it to cut down on future animation time as I think they're gonna use it to extend the fight more than necessary.
6:58 it was probably fun to animate, animation is fun to do when you can play fast and loose with form, and just go ham with fast movements and squash and stretch, action scenes might take more work but slow movement, walk cycles etc are very tedious to draw and require more precision due to the "camera" lingering on those shots.
Can’t lie I have rewatched 1071 over 10 times now mostly and primarily for drums music and being hyped every time luffy jumps around and just having fun before the fight with kaido starts up again
The way you explained kaido being animated more cartoonish made parallels in my head between gear 5 and Pegasus using cartoon monsters

9:35 Funny thing is that’s what exactly happened in the anime. Though instead of Bulma’s family it cuts to Bulma shenanigans while she’s on Namek
They actually apparently cut the opening shorter than normal to make room for the ending just figured I'd share
So I rewatched the episode and when Luffy is fighting kaido I notice how fast paced it was and how so much was going on so I watched it in .5 speed and it's starting to make sense and it make this episode/transformation more hype ..the trope with power ups is that they either move to fast to actually see /animate... Or it's the same speed as previous power ups so theres no difference except to match the opponent... And watching it in half speed shows they animated every frame and the voice acting actually sounds fairly normal...even the part when kaido speaks he sounds like he's starting to get hungover and tired but still excited ...and also luffys laugh is something else and it gives me goosebumps ... With this transformation in mind for the anime means this was probably odas plan and its genius to just animate a whole fight scene and double the speed and In other anime it would look ridiculous and it works

This episode reminded me of the Goku vs. Jiren penultimate episode where Toei let guest artists animate the key fight sequences. They definitely spent extra cash on this episode.
The orochi Googley eyes had me crying with laughter. The way they just disconnected and rolled around in his head was too much
I have rewatched the Gear 5 scenes so many times, and skipped the Hiyori parts when doing so. Those scenes are so damn amazing
I like the party vibes drums. I do admit I half expected that classic One Piece drum theme to BE the drums of liberation, like some really really long planted foreshadowing XD
