I was extremely fortunate to meet and spend some serious time with Pat! He was a judge at a blues competition I competed in. We talked and he shared some extremely generous advice! I got to jam on Pat’s rig! We became instant friends!
This is the lick that I have been working on this past week and making octaves out of... yesterday I started my Pat Ramsey journey again. I started a couple of years ago and didn't stay with all these videos. So I decided a couple of days ago to go through them all from start to finish. The next day you posted all of Pat Ramsey videos in a list, so I thank you for that!! I enjoyed your Pat Ramsey story last night... it is a treasure of a story Jason!! 😊🙏💖
How did I miss this when it first dropped?!?! Must have gotten buried in my notifications. I'm so glad _Pat Ramsey Lick #3_ inspired me to go back and _look for_ the first two installments. Such a great lick! I've used it often over the years, but it never occurred to me to just keep "looping" it as its own in-the-pocket long lick. Brilliantly simple! Stop me if you've heard this. Time to hit the woodshed!
MAN! I love the way you teach - I was talking to a buddy about this very thing today - breaking things down into their elements - deconstructing whats been - takes you on new paths- now I know this isnt an original idea - its how we all become musicians to a greater or lesser degree - but Im talking about YOUR ability to explain it - to break it down - not only to understand what it is your teaching - but you show how the elements can lead you to new creative spaces with your playing - if one is willing to put the time in and pay attention. And further - your videos always bring home the elegance - of minimalism - which is required for this instrument . As a bassist - and a guitar player - I get that - as a harmonica player - still very much a work in progress - your videos and generosity have been a big part of that process. Cheers! (I know about the heaviness and gratitude that one has for ones mentors. And I think for those of us whose fathers were not exactly exemplary - particularly us dudes - we go out looking for mentors in our chosen fields. I have been very very lucky in that I have had several mentors as an adult - and I am lucky enough to still be in touch with them. And for that I am CRAZY grateful. And if one of them had referred to me as son - I think I would have lost it. So I think I get it. Much love brother )
I will try to make it here Friday Morning for the premier but I might be still be wrapping up a gig in Maryland. Hope to see yall if not ENJOY the video!
My favorite part of the Blue Stories about Pat was when he approached you after years of claiming to just be a natural, and admitted to being a minor pentatonic Charlie McCoy. That shit had me laughing. Thanks for the video! Would you take requests for specific Ramsey licks?
Jason - This is probably one of you best lesson ever. I can’t believe I never realized that Pat’s riff was Hoochie Coochie Man turned around and inside out.
I lived in Miami not at all a place with a blues tradition and back in the early part of this century walked into this one bar whose owner had a penchant for blues in a market not really into the blues. I wasn’t ignorant of blues music but knew only the old timers really. This guy gets up and blows and I say to myself “either he’s like the best I’ve ever heard or I dont know music”. Turns out the first part of my thought was more true than the second part. I was blown away.
Jason, I love that you give this stuff away. You have something unique and could sit on it and keep it to yourself, but you've always shared everything with anyone that wanted to learn. Thanks for that! Somewhere a long time ago you told me to check out Pat Ramsey. I bought a CD from his website and put in the comments that you sent me there. He sent me a second CD free ("It's about Time"), with a signed note in it that said "This is Jason's favorite ... My 1st CD". Next time you get to Phoenix for a show I'll give you the CD with the note.
Man, I really look forward to your videos! Learning alot from them. You are one helluva harp player/musician and maybe one day I'll be half the player you are. DO NOT STOP MAKING THESE VIDEOS! God bless.
The Pat Ramsey style is realy cool, thank you for giving us these lick, these lesson! It is good for practice fast playing on the harmonica I think. I wish you a lot of fun and a full wallet at the gig in Maryland ;-)
Thanks so much Jason for the passion and content you bring to these and all your past posted lessons. I was practicing in my office so often that I developed an allergy. I was Allergic To Work!!! So I was done with that work thang!
Sweet lick Jason .This lick for me tweeked that light bulb of shine on one of the special JR slight of mouth techniques that often is hard to put ones finger on (even with all of your skillful video givings). And a real good way top snap that muscle memory from the classic 4b 3d' 2d lick--thanx bro:-)
Jason-I've learned so much from you and bringing Pat Ramsey to my awareness is top of the list. Thanks. I'd like to suggest some embouchure instruction along with the Awesome Pat Series.
Hi J. I have a question for you. What do you think about playing this lick in middle register using only 6 hole? I watched your video about overblow bending and it is possible to get 7 blow note using 6 overblow bend. I tried to do it, but I can not play this fast enough, but I don't think that it would be a problem for you.
Boa noite Jason! Estou aprendendo a tocar Harmônica diatônica(Blues) e gosto muito do seu estilo. Gostaria de aprender a técnica de tournig block, pois só uso a de bico. Vc poderia me ajudar nesse aprendizado? Thanks!!

Thanks a lot. One lick, so many possibilities of performance.
