I'm glad that you like that element of my approach. You're quite right: that's a deliberate element of what I do--that teasing, that incompleteness. I'm trying to push you to get intrigued what what still isn't known, still isn't doable. We care more about the stuff that we have to work hard to get. Then we feel as though we've earned it. And we own the knowledge that we've accrued.
I've been playing for 30 years. Adam's willingness to share his talent speaks highly of him. I've purchased some of his instructional stuff and my only wish is that it would have been available three decades ago. His efforts to break down Whammer Jammer are, like his other stuff, admirable. Thanks Adam!
Seriously, thanks for all of these. I've never played an instrument and have recently chosen the blues harp as a tool of expression. These videos keep me going when I lose motivation to practice.
I found this lesson so helpful, this is just the kind of stuff I need to progress to the next lesson!- it was also great how you showed how to work it into the 12 bar blues! Any other classes like this would be greatly appreciated-thank you Adam.
All of the ghost chords at the end that you thought you couldn't explain seem to just be fake tongue-slaps. As a puckerer, I've been really dedicating the last couple months to replicating those percussive tongue-slaps on the upbeat to get the bluesy swing that this lesson is really all about. This video is one of your best, Adam; cool lick and deep thought, the Gussow trademark. : )
Love it! Got this lesson off of the modern blues harmonica website before I saw this post. Those tradebit lessons are the best I've tried, very informational and well done.
Awesome lick Adam! I've been playing it over and over. Working on getting down so that when I am asked to sit in on a blues number it will flow. I really like your teaching videos. I'm an Old Dog trying to learn some new tricks. I'm 59 and I still like learning and improving what I can do. Thanks for sharing what you know. Rick
i have never seen a teacher on a screen that can motivate and puts his hart in it, like this one. haha where do you get the time to teach us all these things. All a blues man can do is just say "thanks , adam!"
Great lesson Adam, as always. What I like about your teaching method is that you let some of 'the mistery' at the end, which makes it more interesting, and of course more didactic, because when i get the part of the lick you have taught I push myself forward to get the second part applying the theory and the techniques I've learnt in some of your other videos. I think that is what makes me improve. Thanks a lot for your lessons man, you have a friend in Spain.
I enjoy your playing and lessons. I saw you and Mr. Satan a few years back at a little Blues Bar in Fort Smith, AR. Bought a couple of your CD's. Thanks a lot for the insight to harpin'
This being an "old" video You may not read the comments any more, but thank You so very much for the lesson, Adam! I learned the lick and I love it very much!
Thanks, J! Hey, I'm coming down to Clarksdale for that Delta Groove thing....can't stay for your late set, but definitely want to hang out. Hope I see you there.
Exactly !! It's in searching the path than you find and understand the play. If you need to slow down the riff, take Transcribe, but tab are false friends !! You must be able to hear and play, else you would just play music like a computer without really understanding what you're doing ... Thanks for the vid Adam, brilliant as always !!
Cool. Kind of simple but very tasty. Even got the dog singing along. A great launching point for improv. Thanks as always! I just got a new Manji in D and it has the open sided coverplates and the whole thing really projects.
Dr. Adam, you may not be quite a goat overall, but your blue third sure the hell is, bent at that magical 1/3 stepish territory... absolutely fantastic Hope you and yours are doing awesome Zach from Cincinnati
Love this lick gonna try it on my E Blues Harp. The 4 bends not so hard, its his smooth slide release and blow that I love, he's very clean. I'm gonna start studying him. I used to play in the streets of Fredericksburg, VA. when I was unemployed. I've been playing blues harp since I was 12, 46 years now...
Another Great video. Please keep this kind of lesson up. I have been recording myself playing and I just don't like the sound. This lesson is truly revealing the secrets and mysteries of good playing. Thank you.
Lol it's called a bend on the 4th hole of a D harp. When you cup your hands tight and open them as you give it a strong bend it will give it the sound you're looking for.
+Gaming101 It's not that simple. It's a "dirty note". He plays the 4 draw bend like you wrote but he leaks a little bit of air into the 5 draw and that is what gives it the "scream".
You may be right. It may be that in trying to replicate the playing of Nat Riddles through close focus and study but WITHOUT tongue blocking on holes 123, I created a new fake tongue-slap style. Of course I'm using my tongue in contact with the roof of my mouth quite vigorously, but not ON the harp comb--at least in this particular pattern.
The vibrato is my biggest challenge. Its hard.I think im a advanced player. Im practising one year now only on troat vibrato and its working the first ten seconds and then its over. im still not there may be its psychologic........thanks Adam!!!!!!!
Reminded me of "Gonna Shoot You Right Down--Boom Boom Boom" by The Jimmy Rogers All Stars, featuring Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, & Eric Clapton... probably other versions and songs as well.
@crookedstixz Try to listen more closely to what he's playing. Feel it. Connect it to your harp, and when you have the sound internalized, you will find you can play it. Listen, listen, listen. Then play. Tabs are not necessary.
Since I would have a very hard time playing this particular set of riffs while tongue blocking, I should really respond, "Email Dennis Gruenling and Joe Filisko and ask them," since they t.b. everything. I rarely t.b. fast note sequences involving bends. Why would I? Puckering makes this stuff so much easier.
If you google "john lee hooker gussow tradebit pdf" you'll find the tab sheet that I've worked up for this. It costs $2. There's also a video lesson that goes into much more detail, for $5. John lee hooker gussow tradebit .mov
Mniej nadęcia a więcej odwagi.
and geez wannabe harper, please stop asking the guy for free tabs, he's done enough. I can almost guarantee there's not one legendary harp player who had tabs or learned from tabs.
I love the way your chords sound and vamp just right between the two licks...Thats awesome!

Adam thanks for teaching my friend Narek how to play so well hes gotten so great... thanks for what you do!!!!!

Amazing - both the licks and how you break'em down so easily! I've been hooked on your videos for months now. Thanks so much and keep'em coming.
Gussow, you sure looked young 16 years ago. We all did! Awesome lesson, as always! Thank you

This is a bad ass lick!! I gotta master this.
Thanks Adam
Adam i got it after weeks of repetition.I nailed the landing.Neighbours will cop it tonight. Thanks a lot.

THANK YOU !! THANK YOU !!! Ive been trying this lick FOREVER! and its been the 2nd bent 4 draw that ive been missing. cant believe it was that.
Ian
This is great teaching Adam, it is right down to the detail.
the hard part is making that initial triplet sound like one smooth sound instead of three choppy notes. thanks gussow.
I enjoy your playing and lessons. I saw you and Mr. Satan a few years back at a little Blues Bar in Fort Smith, AR. Bought a couple of your CD's. Thanks a lot for the insight to harpin'
Very difficult Adam.Battling through.thank you for the lesson and the effort.
This being an "old" video You may not read the comments any more, but thank You so very much for the lesson, Adam! I learned the lick and I love it very much!
Thank you so much for your lessons and all the inspiration that you give to us.

Love this lick gonna try it on my E Blues Harp. The 4 bends not so hard, its his smooth slide release and blow that I love, he's very clean. I'm gonna start studying him. Another Great video. Please keep this kind of lesson up. I have been recording myself playing and I just don't like the sound. This lesson is truly revealing the secrets and mysteries of good playing.
Thank you.
I can nearly play this now!
8:40 what is it called? anyone? I love that "scream"
Lol it's called a bend on the 4th hole of a D harp. When you cup your hands tight and open them as you give it a strong bend it will give it the sound you're looking for.

+Frej Berglind It is that simple. I've been playing harp for long enough.
Gaming101 agreed, bent 4 with a edge of 5

Yo, Adam, how about a video about the upcoming clinics with Mr. Hilbert in Klingenthal!?
you bring the blues, adam.
to learn Harmonica, this IS the man.
Aha! He's combined these videos with Modern Blues Harmonica videos. He's a hard worker, obviously.
The vibrato is my biggest challenge. Its hard.I think im a advanced player. Im practising one year now only on troat vibrato and its working the first ten seconds and then its over. im still not there may be its psychologic........thanks Adam!!!!!!!
niceone, love this, peace & respect dude ! love to record you over some of my tracks
part1: 4 bend, 4draw, 5 draw, 4bend, 3 draw, 2 draw
part 2: [123] draw, [123] draw, 3bend, [234] blow, [234] blow, 2draw
+Juan Gieling
there is a mistake in part2:
it should be: (123) draw, (123) draw, 3 blow (no bend!), [345] blow, [345] blow, 2 draw
Juan Gieling thanks!!!

@crookedstixz Try to listen more closely to what he's playing. Feel it. Connect it to your harp, and when you have the sound internalized, you will find you can play it. Listen, listen, listen. Then play. Tabs are not necessary.
"Baby, Please Don't Go"
