Dirk is one of those rare individuals... dude is a consummate professionals who barely has any perceptible ego and can drop in to do session work for darn near any genre without sounding even remotely out-of-place. One of the most enjoyable drummers I've had the pleasure to see play live.
Dirks version is phenomenal and conveys more emotional feelings than the original. The melancholy tone with the halftime makes the song hit harder. Plus, his attitude and humbleness are clearly genuine. Dude deserves way more recognition!
This is probably my favorite drumming series ever created. There's just so many different things to focus on and learn from. Plus, it's entertaining. Always a plus. P.S. Just noticed the coaster. Nice.
I’m not that surprised that Dirk never heard of Mr Brightside. They never scored a hit in the Netherlands and I think the same goes for Belgium where Dirk originates from. To be honest I’ve never heard it before until this Drumeo session.
??? They headlined at Rock Werchter!!! In 2009, 2018 and 2022. And that's not some small festival with new and unheared bands. They even were voted number 9 in ''de tijdloze'' (timeless) on Studio Brussel radio. This same radiochannel has the world record of playing the longest session of Mr Brightside in a loop somewhere in 2023 to celebrate the 20y anniversary of the song. So If you say it's not a famous song in Belgium. You must have been living under a rock.
I like the original and I have two brothers who are drummers, who both play this in their respective bands. Im going to send them this video though because the moment he went half-time in the verses it felt immediately natural, an obvious thing to do, yet I've never heard that done before. But it really changes the emotional dynamic of the song. I like it. Plus... whenever he went to work on the toms, I was getting a st*ffy. Such a good sound.
I saw this Drumeo vid earlier. What really impressed me was his attitude, and how respectful he was of playing music in general, and the way that he combined enthusiasm and professionalism.
He is famous for drumming in Soilwork and Megadeth, but his work with Aborted and Scarve is absolutely savage, some of the cleanest and most intense extreme drumming of the 2000's! So happy or him that he made it that far, as he is such a great drummer!!
I actually liked Dirk's interpretation a lot more. He took the song from a tongue-in-cheek revenge ballad to something more somber, bitter, and angsty. I would even go as far as to say his interpretation has loads more emotional weight to it.
Having seen nearly all of the "first time hearing" Drumeo series, this is, by far, the best. I wish this version was available on streaming services since I would listen to this over the original. The half time and Dirk's fills makes this an absolutely incredible track.
This Drumeo series is one of my favorites. Seeing drummers out of their comfort zone and being immediately creative is satisfying. As a drummer, it also gives me ideas for fills/techniques. Never stop borrowing ;)
I actually prefer his version. It changes the whole vibe, makes it more emotional. I dont actually like that song but ive listened to this video about 20 times.
I find it extremely weird that I just stumbled upon the original video a few mins ago and watched it... then your video popped up. Trippy! I would've just watched yours! Lol
I'm a guitarist that has always wanted to play drums. I just picked up the Drumeo Alesis nitro max beginner deal with the free year subscription to drumeo. Loving learning the drums
As someone who wasnt into listening to drum tracks (though its very important to me for the song to sound good to me) I can tell you Im a huge fan of this specific series on drumeo and Im so blown away how great the guests do. In particular I loved hearing this one and how nice and chill he is. Helps that I am still a big fan of earlier Megadeth. Believe they popped up because I had been listening to some newer megadeth as we were going to see them live. Love seeing jazz or pop musicians play heavy rock/metal even if its not a song I like. Really dont care what genre it is this is truly great entertainment.
Dirk is probably my favorite drummer. I'm not the biggest Megadeth fan, but his work with Soilwork was fantastic. He's also a drum teacher himself, and several great metal drummers are previous students- including his replacement in Soilwork after Dirk left to join Megadeth.
I got to see Soilwork twice in a year...1st time with Dirk, 2nd time with Bastian. They both were most excellent, and the Dirk era is some of my all time favorite Soilwork tunes. Especially "The Ride Majestic" album, which is in my personal Top Albums All Time list.🤘
i hadn't heard it before either, unless it was on at grocery stores or places like that. when it came out i was not looking for different/new music, even though it sounds like something i would listen to. . i already had hundreds of albums and thousands of individual songs (across many genres) at that point, and don't listen to the radio. to me, he did a great job and sped up as well as lowered the tempo in the right spots. some bands don't do that, they go 100mph on everything, which isn't a bad thing. he seems like he would be great to work with, no ego, genuine and smart, especially inventing ways to perform better.
Lots of session players don't read music, but have their own system of writing an outline for a song. Basically if you can understand time signatures and willing to practice, you can be a musician, and some people can get their head around time signatures instinctively while others have a more systematic approach.
You with the Maiden shirts. Homage to Nicko. One of the best of all time. 2 minutes to Midnight has some of the best phrased fills ever. And it was 35 years ago
This is one of those songs that tickles the happy spot in my brain from the first listen. I'm anxious to see what AI can do about making music that does the same thing.
@RooneyDrums100% Him in Soilwork was a match made in heaven. Check out Long Live the Misanthrope or Weapon of Vanity, but they have so many fantastic songs! Terribly underrrated band. Dirk along with Mike Portnoy in DT were the drummers that really made me start noticing drumming more.
A lot of songs follow a similar core structure: Verse, Chorus, Verse, Chorus, Bridge, Chorus. The slight variations are, Outro, Intro, Pre-Chorus, Post-Chorus, and sometimes the bridge resolves to the Verse before ending on the chorus. Obviously there are a LOT of exceptions to this. but most modern popular music follows this structure.
Nice!! It would be great if you could do a video like this... Pick a track in drumeo that you don't know and show how you'd do this kind of charts and record a take on the song! It would be great! (and a great oppoirtunity for a Drumeo ad lol)
i read a book called the wrecking crew.union regs and producers did not want to go 1 second into overtime. a union rep made sure ot was paid so pressure was on. these drumeo bits are interesting hope you do more
Hey I must speak up now... Its a shame that you still have not reacted to Lovebites. You will be blown away of the skill this group posseses . One of the best female powermetal/trash metal drummers in the world in our current time is "Little big engine"Haruna from Lovebites. Haruna is in our current time a 4'9" amazing package.. With groves and fills and pounding double kicks but at the same time she can be just extraordinary melodious. She is as mentioned known for being a very melodious metal drummer. And her cymbal fills and ever pounding double bass is her signature.. A phenomenon... Her technical skill is (as for the whole band) thru the roof... And she is a very good friend with Akane from Bandmaid. What is this bands thing is not just how incredible skilled they all are as musicians. Its also the songwriting. That in my mind at least makes them stand out against for an example DragonForce. At (as a whole band) the same skill level... They also do different styles in different songs. Like hardrock, trash metal, powermetal, and plain metal. They said in an interview that the starting rolemodels for them was the old english and European metal bands. Nowadays they have done their own mixture of everything . Still not a bad song thru all their albums... The live shows are amazing and they are all amazing personalities. Nicknames and real name The Golden Touch - Myiako guitarr Little big engine - Haruna drummer The Shredder - Midori guitarr The Voice - Asami lead Shining Fingers - Fami bass (old bassist was Miho) Suggestion for reactions. (Allways choose the live versions) Nameless Warrior (live 2023) The Hammer of Wrath (live 2023) Shadowmaker (live in Tokyo 2021) The Crusade (live in Tokyo 2021) Just a few. Dirk is an amazing drummer, which is wild when you consider like...the band that I know him most from, he's probably not even their best drummer? He didn't join Soilwork until like 2005, which was already on their downswing, tbh. He's been the session drummer on The Project Hate's last several albums, tho, and he's killed it.
Your talking Henri Ranta, geez he was good, him, lopez and wildoer, are my ultimate faces... and while I think of it, Adrian Erlaandson, just all times
I don’t even care for this song and this drum pattern makes it so much more interesting. Very cool. Also lol at “every drummer needs to make notes… well except Chad” lol facts.
Look, I know that no one can play everything. But Jojo Mayer MIGHT be able to play everything... ...maybe... ...if anyone can... ...I'm jus sayin... Love what Dirk did with this, listening to the lyrics with what he played it really makes it a more dramatic song instead of that high school party song vibe lol. Dare I say that I even prefer his slightly different chorus, I really dig what he added to it; I think it would match well with the rest of the original playing. I know that it's always easy to say "wow, I can't believe they aren't familiar with that one", but, wow, I can't believe he isn't familiar with that one LOL. It's been played EVERYWHERE, not just at shows and such, but sporting events, in stores, everywhere. If some big name drummer comes on here and says that they aren't familiar with 'Seven Nation Army', that's it, I'm calling shenanigans, that is a bridge that is just too damn far my friends!!!
Andrew, not going to be original here but for a different reason to the norm. Please react to Dire Straits Sultans of Swing Alchemy Live, not for Marks guitar but for the amazingly underrated Terry Williams on drums.
I know they are your sponsors and it's a great tool but did feel the drumeo showcasing was a bit too much and I would have appreciated a bit more discussion of the parts he played... Sorry I know everyone is a critic...
There is no way he's never heard this song imo, subconsciously I bet when he's been gigging it's been on the big speakers before bands come out or even if he's been to watch live bands they play music usually before to keep crowd entertained
I don’t think people get how easy it is to not hear stuff. I’d never heard of this song before seeing the Drumeo video. Had never heard of 30 Seconds to Mars either. I just have no interest in main stream commercial music, and I’m not hanging out in bars or wherever this stuff gets played. Most modern rock/metal I listen to is Japanese. One of the most enjoyable drummers I've had the pleasure to see play live.
I got to see him play with Soilwork. Dude put out an excellent bunch of albums with them before heading to Megadave.🤘
Dirks version is phenomenal and conveys more emotional feelings than the original. The melancholy tone with the halftime makes the song hit harder. Plus, his attitude and humbleness are clearly genuine. Dude deserves way more recognition!
It's so much more dramatic lol
I'll second that.🤘
Well just remember that the original was quantized to take out all the humanity, we're talking mid 00s after all.
This is probably my favorite drumming series ever created. There's just so many different things to focus on and learn from. Plus, it's entertaining. Always a plus.
P.S. Just noticed the coaster. Nice.
Well spotted :)
I’m not that surprised that Dirk never heard of Mr Brightside. They never scored a hit in the Netherlands and I think the same goes for Belgium where Dirk originates from. To be honest I’ve never heard it before until this Drumeo session.
Interesting, it was all over Germany.
Same here never heared mr brightside till i saw the drumeo where dirk played it...

Hearing and LISTENING are different things when you really think about it
Dirk is one of the coolest dude's out there such a kind person.

agree!
Dirk is just a kind, wonderful human that happens to hit those things like a boss.
I love watching the Drumeo crew reacting when the drummer does a particularly fun bit that delights them
Such a cool and humble guy! That was a real treat to watch 😊
Yes. Totally humble like most of the greats
This is definitely one of the better first time listens on Drumeo. He killed it
He is famous for drumming in Soilwork and Megadeth, but his work with Aborted and Scarve is absolutely savage, some of the cleanest and most intense extreme drumming of the 2000's!
So happy or him that he made it that far, as he is such a great drummer!!

Dirk is phenomenal. Been a fan since i saw him in the production videos for Deconstruction by Devin Townsend. Bonkers drummer.
"Hey hey Andrew, it's UA-cam here..." 😂
First thing I noticed. lol
That was great! Loved his half time stuff in the verses. It really fit well.
💯
I love this guy and his take on the track, my favourite of the whole series so far
I don't know anything about drumming but I love that drumeo series
ME TOO
Having seen nearly all of the "first time hearing" Drumeo series, this is, by far, the best. I wish this version was available on streaming services since I would listen to this over the original. The half time and Dirk's fills makes this an absolutely incredible track.

I’m glad you mentioned “not being able to play everything”. Estepario on his last reaction even said how he couldn’t play what he was reacting to.

It’s like a little science experiment 🔬
Mr Brightside is closing in on 400 non-consecutive weeks in the UK singles charts. It just rises from the dead again and again and again.
Dirk has a blast named after him; he’s that level of Dirk.
Dirk is probably my favorite drummer. I'm not the biggest Megadeth fan, but his work with Soilwork was fantastic. He's also a drum teacher himself, and several great metal drummers are previous students- including his replacement in Soilwork after Dirk left to join Megadeth.

One of the best Drummers. insane
The name "Dirk" equals Quality !!!
Dirk a an absolute monster drummer who was with the Melodic/Thrash metal band Soilwork for years. Good to see him on your channel.
Finally! I've been waiting and waiting for your reaction to this.
Hope you enjoyed it!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums I did, indeed. I have almost zero musical ability, but I love drums/drummers, so I learn much from listening to you. Thanks!
❤ loved it now you're ready to see him play misery business
Great video, and I got a good laugh out of "What's up Andrew, it's UA-cam here" at the beginning. 😁
Between his many collaborations he records session drums in Sybreed, whitch i love. Amazing works ❤
The amazing unifying principle with all these Drumeo videos is the drummers’ commitment to good muscianship.
i hadn't heard it before either, unless it was on at grocery stores or places like that. when it came out i was not looking for different/new music, even though it sounds like something i would listen to. . i already had hundreds of albums and thousands of individual songs (across many genres) at that point, and don't listen to the radio.

I like Dirk! He's so accomplished but humble.
Yup the humility shines through
Man, the original drum part is so good and so well played.
I love the concept of what Drumeo is doing here.
This is one of those songs that tickles the happy spot in my brain from the first listen. I'm anxious to see what AI can do about making music that does the same thing.
Y’all need to hear Dirk’s drums in Soilwork. You’ll get to hear to
What he does and not be limited to Megadeth’s limitations
👀

being guided by the voice, it is sometimes easy to get the rhythm if you have a good ear

Learned about Dirk from the Paramore cover. My dream is for Vinnie to do a first time video with Drumeo.
Dirk is such a chill guy.
Brilliant!
Yup so good
So strange to hear it played half time, it works, but at the same time my brain just says no, that's not right. :D
Heard this song i guess somewhere on a radiostation but no not my favorite band. Never knew this song is that big.

Have you invested in some new lighting Andrew? The frame is looking very clean
I hadn't heard this song either until I saw this video with Dirk. 🤷🏻
8:35 Stank face ENGAGE!!
It is literally mind blowing that he doesn’t know that song. It has to be top 25 most recognizable of the last 25 years
He made the song fresh for me again... heard it so many times over the years I just avoided it but yeah "badass"
I think you forgot a fellow by the name of Neil aka the professor...he could play anything!
I don’t even care for this song and this drum pattern makes it so much more interesting. Very cool.
Also lol at “every drummer needs to make notes… well except Chad” lol facts.
I wish Drumeo could get Danny Carey to do this!! Love these videos!

Where do you teach drums?

El estapario…. He pretty much can… just saying 😂 love your channel brother
Absolutely hate the original, this version though has me hooked. I now feel room to breathe. Didn't have that before, it was so full...
Nice intro 💀

Did you watch till the end of the vid?
@@AndrewRooneyDrums I did yeah.... I liked those parts. Maybe I'm just being greedy
