- This week I take a solo cruise on my Narrowboat to Anderton to catch up with friends and family after being away in Europe for such a long time in my camper van. I visit Helen and Russell on their all electric Narrowboat - Professor Pat Pending to see how they are coping with an all electric Narrowboat in the winter and after two years of being continuous cruisers. I also catch up with Charlie who has recently bought a sailaway Widebeam boat and is in the process of fitting it out.

After selling my house to experience an alternative lifestyle I bought a canal boat and a camper van which as a solo female who loves to travel, gives me the best of both worlds. I have recently got myself a new addition to the crew, a fabulous companion - my little rescue dog Bonny who is an absolute joy and the perfect First Mate. I also work full time off grid from my tiny home and trade at canal festivals as The Narrowboat Pirate aboard The Pirate Boat.

We met you and Bonnie last Saturday at the bottom of the Anderton boat lift. We had just completed a one week cruise on an Anglo-Welsh boat and met up with our relatives at the boat lift. There was the Rum Wench moored up, and I couldn't resist saying hello. Meeting you in person made my day and a wonderful finale to our holiday in the UK. I have subscribed to your channel for years and it was your epic journeys that inspired us to try it out. Thank you for your great videos and we will be following you on your path.

Hasn’t Bonny come on into a totally confident and happy dog. I remember when you first had her join in your boating life and get her trained to be with people and other dogs. She has top marks….her holiday did her good and she is now completely yours. Lovely to see, love works every time.

@@philipjones9458 most definitely… I watched every episode of his TV series over and over… being a mechanical nut myself I was so inspired by Fred’s grit, passion and knowledge. I cannot imagine “anyone” alive today that would or could equal Fred in what he did… such a sad loss

Interesting report. However, the 400 pds year has to be balanced against the total cost of the electric system. Given that you can figure payback time. Also these systems can be expensive to sort if problems come up. I have a large home solar field, it's great, but also not cheap and payback a fair bit down the track.
Luckily their boat wasn’t much more than most new boat builds these days
Oh, I can imagine how good it must feel to be back home, on the boat. It feels good to me too, to have you back on the boat. It's where you should be. 🙂 As usual, your videos are so instructional, informational, fun, and wonderful. That electric boat is super. And yes, electric boats and cars cost less money (after you buy them) and they pollute WAY less, and are easier to manage because they are ALL-electric. I do still like the chug-chug-chug of your engine tho, Heidi. Nice to meet Charlie. Cheers! 🙂

Welcome back to Old Blighty Heidi. I hope your holiday left you feeling recharged and happy.
While you were away you tragically lost one viewer. He was my best friend and lived in his little cabin cruiser 'Bonnie Bay'. He'd just bought himself a sail away narrowboat that he was renovating to move aboard for 4 weeks when he sadly died of a heart attack at the age of 52. The canal folk will miss him and his Rottweiler named Moon.
Raise a glass and toast Graham Burtenshaw and wish his soul a happy journey into the ever after. We miss him and his great kindness so much.
I am so sorry for the loss of your best friend. I am sure he is up in heaven getting a narrowboat ready to travel the angelic canals and will be saving a spot for you when it is your time to go boating in Heaven. I don't drink alcohol but I am raising my glass of tea to the captain of the cabin cruiser Bonnie Bay.

The "chugging" off a trusty old Lister is sound off a livegiving engine , from a boat to a generator in the wildernes off nowhere , but the sound gives a signal off people and companionship. Sorry but i love the Lister engine. 🙂

I have a Nicholson guide from 1989 that says electric boats are "becoming increasingly popular"... it took a long time and they're still rare
There are quite a lot now, but I only know of 2 full time continuous cruisers 😃🏴☠️

Bonny dressed like the Queen on a special visit to the Opera. Well done.
They make bifacial solar panels now that can absorb energy from both sides, they work really well if you slightly elevate the panels tilt them to the sun and paint a colour like white behind them reflecting light through to the back part of the panel producing as much as 30% more power, even in overcast conditions.

Always love your videos. On the electric boat, check on how long the battery last and how much it cost to replace. A well maintained diesel last a long, long time.
Yes but we all have a huge bank of batteries to power our appliances it’s just my engine powers the boat where as theirs is powered completely by electric 😃

Great to see you back on the canals.
It's all well and good talking about the savings per year on running costs on an electric boat, but nobody talks about the cost of installation, a new diesel engine £10k full electric fit and batteries by a boat builder £20 to £30k, so even with licence reduction recouping the maximum of £20k will take years.
Keep the video's coming, really enjoyed the van over winter.

So good to see the canals again. After a little over a week of above freezing and a real mud puddle it snowed last night. Just a sprinkle but a winter wonderland but it won't last long. Thank you for taking us along.
