      I mean sure it may feel that way but if you wore that in the fifties people would look at you weird. It’s really modern.
      Reasons:
      - length
      - cut
      - general silhouette
      - pattern
      - shoulders
      - bust area cut thing? However you call it.
      - many more reasons that I can’t think of
      - fabric
      Also, Ashley’s hair isn’t pin-/curled in any way and it’s very long for the fifties so she would probably wear it in a chingong (I think it’s called) or wear it in a type of “bun” thatmany people wore. She also has really weird layers that just doesn’t work for the type of hair styles they had. She would probably have a type of midi or horse shoe haircut. She most likely also wouldn’t have dyed hair.
      Fashion at the time also wasn’t necessarily meant for younger people. Though, they did to a certain aspect copy it in their own way.
      Fun facts about fifties fashion/fashion history:
      - skirt hemlines in ‘47 thanks to Christian Dior(?) became longer since the war. Many women were actually pissed off bc they almost showed their knees thanks to fabric rations.
      The first time in fashion history where women showed their knees wasn’t until the sixties. Yes, that means that NO ONE showed their knees in the twenties and when people say “hemlines were the shortest ever” that means that at the time they were the shortest they had ever been.
      -barley anyone wore polka dots and I have no clue where the cherries came from
      - pony tails were worn by younger women and they were generally allowed to have longer hair bc they didn’t “apply” to fashion so to speak.
      - Petticoats weren’t used in a regular basis though many survived.
      -red lipstick was seen as out of fashion and many opted for pink lipstick. (Even Marilyn. She loved her pink lipstick.)
      - you had silver and blue eye shadow as well and though eyeliner existed I don’t think it was as popular as we perceive it to be.
      - not everyone looked like movie stars and people in magazines
      -Marilyn’s actual measurements were truthfully tiny and if you want a time period where curvy/women on the heavier side were liked then look in the past. I’d say the last ten years of the Victorian era and the Edwardian era and even later.
      - many people still made their own clothes bc it was cheaper/easier.
      - the “ideal” silhouette was the “wasp silhouette”
      That’s all I can think of off the top of my head. Either way I understand why she would say that but...that’s not fifties. Either way I just want people to do their research bc fashion history is really, really, really interesting.
      There are many misconceptions about the Victorian era, the 20s, the 50s and many more.
      Also...corsets weren’t constricting. They didn’t make anyone faint. People knew tight lacing was bad.
      Even servants, factory workers and so forth wore corsets. Even Suffragettes!
      If they were truly so constricting, why would women wear stays and corsets for so long?
      Practicality>fashion.
      Also fabrics in the past were much stronger and made to last a lifetime!
      Fashion gradually adapted bc it was slower. People needed to grow (or sheer, etc.) the materials, weave them by hand, make the clothes by hand even until the sewing machine came about they were still mostly made by hand.
      Another thing is that if you look at Victorian England the fashion trends changed every ten years or so but gradually and were always built on the foundation of the year(s) before.
      Sometimes you even had women alter their clothes from the past years to fit the fashion then bc it would be too expensive otherwise.
      Overall fashion back then was very, very, very sustainable but did cost more.
      For good reason.
      Haute Couture also started in Paris thanks to Frederick Worth. I find it crazy how people who aren’t into fashion don’t know about him.
      He made beautiful dresses I won’t ramble about the peacock dress bc Cathy Hay and Bernadette Banner did that already.
      And finally many women in the 20s still wore their corsets and didn’t partake in the “flappet look” bc it was seen as scandalous and you would only really see it in bigger cities such as Berlin, Paris, New York. If you went to a little town even in Germany, France, US you wouldn’t see many if any Flapper girls.
      Ok. I think that’s it. Have a lovely day. I am amazed you got this far. Thank you!
      Do your research, kids.
      This was more than just about the fifties.

      Saadia Peerzada and not only do they pay less than minimum wage to the makers, they also have to audacity to pay their workers that SELL the clothes minimum wage. I know it’s more important to think about the people who work in terrible conditions and barely get paid because they have it way worse, but it just goes to show how shitty the companies actually are because even if the clothes cost so much they still can’t bare to pay their workers a fair wage. I've done a significant amount of wardrobe decluttering in the past few months, and honestly, I think that having fewer pieces is the key to getting value out of what you have. If you have a huge wardrobe and can't see all of your clothes at once, you forget what you've got, constantly want more, and focus on quantity over quality. With my reduced wardrobe (less than 60 pieces, including outerwear but not underwear), when I think about buying new clothes, I don't just want to *have more* . I think a lot about what specific pieces would complete outfits I want to make, then look through thrift stores or pattern and make them myself (I'm a seamstress). It makes me feel satisfied, looking at my complete, *~aesthetic as fuck~* wardrobe, rather than having a bunch of clutter that weighs on my brain.
    tl;dr: fewer clothes = more happiness

    • @jeriekae
      @jeriekae 5 років тому +13

      Arden Winner I agree. Quality and classic pieces that will last you for years. I’m also decluttering my wardrobe.

    • @anniec86
      @anniec86 5 років тому +9

      I absolutely have to agree with you! I've recently done the same with my wardrobe and couldn't be happier. Actually, I would be happier if all of my clothing were sustainable and enjoyed wearing all of them equally, but at the moment they're all from stores like Zara and other cheap-quality stores. I'm looking forward to slowly incorporating clothes that will last me for a long time and that are up to my standards.

      I do the exact same thing as you! Investing in your wardrobe and taking time to select them not only feels so satisfying but ensures you love what’s actually in your closet. Plus you save money instead of buying based on trends

    • @browniewithicecream8330
      @browniewithicecream8330 5 років тому

      When you declutter your wardrobe what do you do with the clothes that you don't want anymore?

    • @wintrygarden
      @wintrygarden 5 років тому +2

      @@browniewithicecream8330 it depends on the condition of the clothes, and what type of clothing they are. Underwear, old socks, and clothes that are irreparably damaged/stained/warped, I generally trash. I'd love to find a fabric recycling center, though! I think H&M has fabric recycling bins. Anything that isn't an undergarment and is wearable, I donate to thrift stores near me. Make sure the clothes you donate are cleaned before donation, as they are not always washed before being evaluated, and dirty clothes might wind up being trashed. It doesn't matter if they're in fashion or not! If you have higher end pieces, or just things that are on trend at the moment, you can take them to a consignment shop to sell them, or try to sell on Depop or ThredUp, or similar websites. I generally find the return on those sorts of sales to be pretty poor bc I am not a dedicated flipper, but some people (like ya gurl Ashley here) make a great living doing that.
      So ... lots of options, and almost none of them involve tossing things in a landfill!

    I think faux leather only deserves to be rebranded as vegan/better for the earth when they use the cool new alternative options that are also biodegradable (+ more expensive), otherwise using the generic plastic faux leather to market sustainability is just ridiculous IMO

    • @hannah4204
      @hannah4204 5 років тому +70

    • @bums009
      @bums009 5 років тому +8

      Yeah I was thinking this as well. I was about to comment 'isn't all faux leather made of plastic?' but then I saw your comment. Didn't know there were biodegradable options at all! Not that I would be able to afford them lmao.
      Also can I just ask why real leather is bad for the environment? I bought a pair of traditional leather shin high Doc Martens boots like 7 years ago but they're still in great condition and still my favourite shoes to wear to this day honestly.

    • @Eva_R966
      @Eva_R966 5 років тому +42

      @@bums009 Hey! the sustainability of real leather is a matter of discussion that I think depends on a lot of factors. Personally, I prefer to buy leather products (preferably sparingly or thrift them) that I know will last me years and years that are well-made (docs are a great example since the company has great craftsmanship and fair wages etc). In that sense, because of the durability and biodegradability, as long as you don't overconsume, leather can be the more sustainable option for an individual person. On a larger scale, there are issues with the production of leather that are concerning, like the dyes that can be used (that can end up harming the environment), as well as most leather being a byproduct of the meat industry which in itself uses so many natural resources (water/crops/etc). Obviously, depending on your stance on animal rights, it's also understandable to oppose such use at all. It's really only scratching the surface but I hope this kind of helped, new types of faux leather are exiting to read about but at this point I think the best way to approach it is to try and buy less and really try to decrease waste, no matter what option you go for!

    • @bums009
      @bums009 5 років тому +7

      @@Eva_R966 Thanks for all the new information and I completely agree with what you said. Biodegradable faux leather seems like an interesting alternative I would definitely check out but honestly I consume less when I buy leather shoes because they genuinely last longer. And I feel very strongly about the whole plastic pollution problem.
      Two of my three pairs of leather shoes are thrifted leather which is the holy grail for me lol. Also eBay is a great option for second-hand leather options that I like to use.

      Its a great alternative if you want a cruelty free option, but I think the term "vegan leather" makes people think its good for the environment, but actually its not. Yes, you don't have the waste produced by the animals but it is a plastic and wont decompose when it gets discarded. Thats why i hate the term vegan leather!

      It’s petroleum! It falls apart faster than leather, it’s so bad for the environment, and most leather coms from cattle that were already used for food.

I've been trying to shop a lot less at fast fashion places like H&M and Forever 21, recently and I've been thrift shopping a lot more.
