That trucker was behind the Tesla at one point even when in the left lane. The Tesla would have been visible then if the trucker was paying attention. Trucker is clearly at fault. Was it even legal for the trucker to pass? Some states have stretches of highway that forbid truckers in the left lane.

Absolutely. I've also seen videos of truckers doing this to other semis, so as much as I have respect for truckers, I'm not going to just automatically defend them. There are jerks behind the wheel of trucks just like in cars.

Agree that the trucker was at fault, but it is not a good idea to be alongside a truck, so it would have been sensible for Aman to let the truck get ahead.

It looked like the video started in a construction zone and some places will forbid trucks from the rigiht lane in construction zones, so it could have been once the construction zone ended the truck wanted to get over. Either way I've never seen it illegal for a trucker to pass when there's only two lanes. When there are three or more sometimes trucks are forbidden from the left-most lanes. (They go over there routinely, anyway.) The trucker should have confirmed they had cleared the cammer's vehicle first no matter the lane situation.

The truck overtaking and nearly running Aman off the road was clearly the trucker's fault. In this day and age, there should be no blind spots, cameras and screens are dirt cheap. Particularly so when you consider the cost of a semi, a few cameras and a screen from which to view them or at least a proximity sensor seems an absolute NO BRAINER.

    • @Kaiser-ks3yq

I agree it is clearly the trucker's fault, but a good defensive driving practice I try to follow is to stay out of blind spots. I don't start to pass until I can clear the length or I'll slow if needed to keep away. That applies to cars as well as trucks. You can't always avoid it, but as often as I can.

As a truck driver myself, the clip with Aman's Teslacam footage and the truck, that was 100% on the truck driver. Most big trucks have enough mirrors on them, (one on each fender, plus the big mirrors and the smaller mirrors on the doors) that they pretty much eliminate blind spots. There was no excuse for that trucker forcing Aman onto the shoulder of the highway like that.

    • @henryhonda8408

You may be legally innocent if something happens but being innocent & dead doesn't make any sense to me. Speed up to get ahead of the truck or slow down and let the truck go by......NEVER just drive beside a transport!! The truck could also blow a tire and that wouldn't be a very good scene for Aman.

There is no debate on trucks hitting other cars. It is the job of any vehicle to pay attention to the vehicles around them when they change lanes. A truck is no more or less responsible for their actions than any other car, but as a professional driver, they should know how to keep track of the vehicles they cannot see and are responsible for whatever they hit. This does not excuse reckless driving that puts a vehicle in a blind spot of a truck because they were driving too fast, swerving, or any other foolish actions. Every vehicle should have a camera and trucks should have multiple.

In response to the last clip…the trucker was at fault. Besides the fact that the trucker had to know the car was there after driving up to and beside the car…the car was not in a blind spot. The trucker’s side mirrors would have shown that the car was there. My husband, a safety administrator for a trucking company (he’s responsible for viewing these types of videos), has told me that most of these incidents can be avoided if the truckers checked their side mirrors. It is better if the truck has extended mirrors. This truck didn’t have the extended mirrors, but the car was forward enough, and the trucker should have seen the car before changing lanes. Also, the trucker is responsible for making sure that their mirrors are positioned correctly before hitting the road.

For the "it's not the truck's fault, because, blind spot" folk: We need to distinguish good driving practice and who is 'at fault'. These are NOT the same thing.
It is good practice to avoid being in a rig's blind spot. No question about it. However that does not in any way put the fault on that driver, if a rig moves into their lane and hits them.

Exactly. I've commented a couple times in the past about drivers that failed at being even a little defensive because that's not good practice, but it's not their fault an accident occurred. In this video, Aman drove defensively enough to avoid getting hit at least. Personally, I wouldn't let a semi pass me like that even in a slow minivan, much less a Tesla. I go with the flow of traffic because it's safer, even when the speed limit is being broken.

Use the clip number or the start time of the clip/moment your comment is about rather than the way you did. In this case, stating 9:05 at the beginning of your post would directly point the readers to the clip. I have something more to say.
Where did your quote of, "it's not the truck's fault, because, blind spot", come from? It was enough said to know what clip you were talking about. But the quote was not there in the clip. I failed to find those words typed or said in the clip. The use of the " marks on the ends of text indicates the words in between those marks reflect exactly what was said or typed by someone. Make sure the quote is correct. It was that quote that lead me to spend over an hour to write this response. About the clip.
The cammer/driver had possession of the lane. It does not matter what vehicle was next to the cammer. They will be at fault crossing into the cammer's lane and making contact.

The payout depends on how much the car was worth at that moment (cars values depreciate the second you leave the lot). Insurance adjusters go by Kelley Blue Book values and will go over your car with a fine toothed comb to find any and all defects that aren't related to the accident. A few normal wear and tear paint chips, maybe you drove too close to a bush and it lightly scratched the side of the car, but in all reality, the scratches were super light and can be buffed out by hand, etc. They'll take all of that and give you the lowest payout possible. How do I know? It was done to me. The final report said "multiple scratches along passenger side," and that deemed my car as "Fair Condition." That would have been the difference between new and junkyard parts and at least $2K in payout. The body shop fought it and made the adjuster watch an apprentice buff out the scratches.

The moment the truck was matching his speed, Aman should have sped up so he was no longer to the side of the truck. I would strongly advise caution there; doing that could open the door to the trucker claiming an act of aggressive driving or road-rage. In fact, the vast majority of states would classify that type of maneuver as both “failure to yield the right of way” and “improper lane use.” Which combined are usually around $200 in fines. But again, some states will also classify it as aggressive driving/road-rage. Really, Aman did just about everything he could have correctly. His position in the truck’s “blind spot” (because he was likely visible in the truck’s convex hood-mounted mirrors) was not by his doing, and lasted only a few seconds before the trucker started that lane change. It’s not like they were side-by-side for more than a mile, which would have pointed to Aman being somewhat to blame.

    • @einyv
      @einyv 5 місяців тому

@@jacobcarlson4010 i strongly disagree. Most states have should not pass on the right on the highway. That wasn't the case here. Tesla owner was already in the lane. If anything the truck driver should have continued passing the Tesla driver then get over into the lane.
It wasn't the Tesla's owner fault the truck decided to match his speed. But 100% from a defensive driving perspective should one NOT remain where the Tesla driver did. Speeding up or slowing down if possible as not to remain in the truck's blindspot is the best course of action and would NOT be considered aggressive driving. Not sure where you would even get improper lane change since the Tesla driver didn't change lanes.
But by all means if you want what happened to the Tesla driver to happen to you, they should listen to you. Everyone else should take my advice if you want to be safe.
**I did not blame Aman for the accident I clearly said technically did nothing wrong but that doesn't mean actions couldn't have been taken to possibly avoid it. I think one of the downfalls of auto pilot is something like this. Again still the truckers fault.

I know that stretch of i81 from Aman's video. The stretch from the Shenandoah valley in Northwestern VA down to Bristol in Southwestern VA is notorious for being one of the most dangerous stretches of highways in the US, specifically because it is too narrow for all the truck traffic and has way too few lanes. I have been hearing about how dangerous that road is my entire life. Things get especially dicey when students move back to Virginia Tech in the fall, or when major events occur in Roanoke. Thankfully, they have been adding truck lanes through the mountains and additional third lanes elsewhere.
Interesting fact. i81 was built in an effort to relieve traffic from US 11. Unfortunately, US 11 still gets heavy traffic due to the frequent accidents, when US 11 is fortunately a separate road. Unfortunately, some ignorant planner decided that in one seven mile mountainous stretch, US 11 and i81 should merge. This small area ends up being a huge bottleneck full of wrecks that creates havoc for the rest of the state.
Btw, before it was US 11, US 11 began as a private toll road in the 1800s. It became a US 11 after the toll road quickly failed and the state took over.
Also, the trucker in the vid could also be extremely tired as Virginia has banned truckers from sleeping at exit ramps for more than two hours. There are simply not enough truck stops along i81. Also, because this is a mountainous stretch the trucker had little control over how they were slowing down in the video. This stretch of highway is notorious for truckers racing past the speed limit on downslopes so they don't slow to 30mph by the top of the next hill or mountain. Unfortunately, they still end up at that slow speed because some mountains on i81, particularly just beyond (south) of where this video takes place.

It can be a problem with ICE vehicles too. If someone is following at the recommended 2-3 seconds following distance, they do not have to hit the brakes to slow down a little. Of course, a vehicle tailgating another will have to hit the brakes every time.
Also, someone might not have to hit the brakes to slow down going up an exit ramp or hill.
