There is only a five year difference between the 4018 Big Boy and the F7. The Big Boy being produced from 1941-1944 and the F7 being produced from 1949-1953. So the F7 is as much of a classic! There both very beautiful for being 75 or more years old. They were both most likely restored.

We pulled pushed and assisted using diesel locos and a big bull dozer and cable to get it up on level track. Not long after Steamtown moved to Its newer home. What a massive machine.

Michael Naisbitt It is currently undergoing restoration. You realize they are actually like half way through getting the operation running again. This isn't some rumor rail fans heard from someone on Reddit. They're already planning excursions.
Trackage clearance can mean a couple diff things. Usually it means an arms length distance from the last or between cars at adjacent tracks, switch or fouling point so there is passing room. Sometime in yards when switching, we had only inches. One time i told our engineer said we need 2 feet to clear a switch on a track we were going to couple to in our next move . I walked over and put my back to this 50 car train and started pushing with my legs between the ties or cribs. I moved the whole 50 car train about 4 ft we needed to clear the switch. I probably really only moved the slack in the couplers but it worked. That's how easy train cars can roll on steel wheels. Amazing railroad tale huh? Lol
Where you have two or more railroads operating over the same stretch of track or even trains of different class, a track order has to be given designating who has the right to occupy that stretch of track. This designation can be obtain by order of the dispatcher that controls that section of track or by timetables.
Big boy weighs around 625 tons. It weighs three times as much or more than the engine that is pulling it.It carried 25,000 gallons of water. Maximum speed 85 miles per hour.

4014 will be the only one. I could be wrong but I believe at one time the 4018 was a candidate for restoration by some group , I don't think it was UP but plans fell through.
Very interesting to know about a BigBoy being restored to working condition again. I am a German and I have a question: What is a "track-age clearance"? Thumbs up! :) Greetings Mega
Hello Mega, I think this refers to the space / clearance around a track. It could be buildings, structures parked cars or anything interfering with a safe passage of the train / locomotive. regards George
They all can have rated horsepower, but with all locomotives the key figure is Tractive Effort: How much pull it has on straight and level track. The Bigboy's had a little over 135,000 lbf of Tractive Effort. You get that from the power of the engines, and the weight on the driving wheels. Diesels are only limited by the strength of the couplers, since you can connect endless units together and spread out the weight over the track. Too much power in one loco tears up the rail.
Just using fuel, diesel oil would need to be approximately $8.00 gal with coal unchanged (unlikely) to break even. This does not take into account maintenance or additional crew or any other infrastructure costs needed.
this was a working steam engine and it still needs to work no need in letting it sit around and rot.... Plus there beautiful engines all steam engines are and they should all work. I hate Diesel/electric and they should be done away with.
The Railway industry is still a business. It would be to expensive to operate steam engines today; They take 100's of people to operate. Steam engines are awesome, but in terms of business practice, they just aren't worth it anymore.
***** I would take the job! I'm 21 years old and failing college, might as well leave the other options open haha! I love trains but I've never been lucky enough to ride one yet. There just aren't any trains in my area except for the occasional freight train. If I had the skills I think I would love to work on these machines, unfortunately I would need to go to a trade school and I already have a huge loan to pay off... Ehh, guess I'll just have to be satisfied watching train vids on UA-cam.
***** For real? What skills/education is required? I am actually serious. I thought there was no hope left if I don't have a college degree but if I could learn to work with trains I would do it. I love mechanical watches and I love trains but I have no experience working with trains, or any heavy machinery for that matter. I would love to ride trains all day long! Is there a place where I can find job info or something? Thanks
I have been in this train before You used to be able to get in the train but now it has medal fencing around it cuz some scrappers or teens tried to steal parts of the train and also kids were injuring them selves so the train was fenced in the year of 2016 Hope they get it out of there soon cuz its hard to find old trains like em in Texas
What a beautiful machine! Beautiful new paint job! I can see the valve gear has been taken off on all four cylinders - which is correct (even though ugly to look at when the entire loco has that museum-perfect look) when the loco is just moved by other machines. Always great seeing a classic Santa Fe EMD F7 A-unit diesel, but nothing beats the Big Boy. One Challenger is up and running, doing 5-day trips once a year (or so), which is awesome - I am pretty sure it's only a matter of time and this Big Boy will be up and running again. Spare parts, back in the day no problem, will be a challenge (pun intended) during a long trip thoough. There will surely always be diesels around (hopefully first generation diesels to match the era) to come in for help if the steamer breaks down. Great video! Thanks for uploading!
5 miles??? Um.. do you even know just how long 5 miles is????? The Union Pacific or any other railroad don't have sidings that long!!! The engine would have to run where there was a continuous double rail mainline. A class 1 yard might be 5 miles long, but not a mainline freight..... A passenger train with a BigBoy would be a little over 300 passengers cars in that 5 miles dude.
These beauties are so well made they will last until new technologies replace them and considering the weight they can so efficiently move, I don’t see them being replaced for a very long time.
+k kirkland But Priuses are much better for the environment because all the emissions are at one spot so any improvements of emissions by the coal plant will reduce emissions for all electric cars. And, uh, very few plugin hybrid Pri have been sold. Most don't have a plug. The new ones are rated at 58 city, 53 highway, Toyota estimates. Also, the amount of energy needed to create gasoline from crude oil can power an electric car for 30 miles easily. I think 8KWh or so for to convert enough crude for 1 gallon of gas. then energy to transport the fuel.
***** but its still a PRIUS! did you order the Obama sticker extra? even if it was 2500 for a new battery, (its not) tell me about all that money you save??? LOL!

4018 looks like it’s in good shape. Unless internally it is in bad shape. I’m glad someone is trying to preserve a few big boys.
one of the other 4 big boys is in Green Bay,WI
Kaiser Ratte I was just gonna say that! :) I live in Green Bay
+Dave Miller also, 4006 is at the museum of transportation in Saint Louis

I can't wait til 4014 is able to run under its own power again, it's going to be a great day!
+Head In Ground Are they all being restored or just the 4014?
4014 will be the only one. I could be wrong but I believe at one time the 4018 was a candidate for restoration by some group , I don't think it was UP but plans fell through.
It's not the fuel, it's all the additional maintenance that you have to do. Retubing a boiler is VERY expensive and labor intensive.
Fantastic video !
irelandbloke dee
Die F7, sieht echt klasse aus, in ihrer Original Farbe, aber auch der Big Boy ist super.
From Germany.
Put it under cover not leave it out in the open
It would be great to see her moving on her own - just like 4014.
Very interesting to know about a BigBoy being restored to working condition again.
I am a German and I have a question: What is a "track-age clearance"?
Thumbs up! :)
Greetings
Mega
Hello Mega,
I think this refers to the space / clearance around a track. It could be buildings, structures parked cars or anything interfering with a safe passage of the train / locomotive.

George
trekky60 Hello George!
Thank you for the information! :)
Cool to know a BigBoy being restored.

Mega
trekky60 So 'loading gauge' in English?
Foxtrot Oscar We are only guessing what the video-uploader means, but it seems to be that loading gauge, right.
megatwingo Sounds logical.
The Tank Car the F Engine had was probably all the WD-40 they needed to get BigBoy 4018 to un Sieze!
4006 is sitting at the museum of transportation in St . Louis Mo.
What a beautiful machine...fantastic.
Love these old trains/locomotives. The older the better. WHERE was this video taken? Is this the "Big Boy" that once sat in Cheyenne, Wyoming?
The "Brake Chorus" at 4:29 is music to a rail fan's ears!
And I heard that in 1990's, they were planning/ raising money to restore big boy 4018 for a movie called "Big Boy".
A lot of iron moving.
garry ackermansr that ain't iron
I like that even the rails were crying about having to put Bigboy away. Fantastic pieces of equipment both of them, but more so the steam engine.
OMG Just like the F7s of my train sets when I was a child...
Did you see the engineer jump off the train coming from the left? That train was not moving 90 mph, let alone 45 mph. Closer to 50 mph combined speed.
Anyone here from when big boy 4014 is up and doing a race?
I think it’s great that they saved some of these engines I’m look forward to the prr t1 Porto Type to be built
Amazing!!! Really love it.
They are a work of art and a big part of our history so I think we should restore more then a few old steam trains for oour history.
🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃
If Thomas the tank engine were to see this Locomotive he will be awstruck
hahaha
He will see Sam,a friend from America he is very strong pulling in that short-film 39 cars
Reminds me of Hero of the rails
Gordon would be a little envious if he saw the Big Boy
Thomas Ninan this is Gordon’s older brother XD
Big Boy No. 4004 is already in Cheyenne, where No. 4014 is headed. I guess it'll be reunited with its big brother!
How many pennies does a bigboy crush in its lifetime? This should be in the FAQ's.
There was one at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago years ago.
this was a working steam engine and it still needs to work no need in letting it sit around and rot....
*****
BUT it puts people to work which is wat is needed atm for the US economy rebound
That is a ridicules statement, It's like saying we should get rid of jets and go back to piston engine airliners with propellers.
Thanks
I have been in this train before
You used to be able to get in the train but now it has medal fencing around it cuz some scrappers or teens tried to steal parts of the train and also kids were injuring them selves so the train was fenced in the year of 2016
Hope they get it out of there soon cuz its hard to find old trains like em in Texas
good video
Sorry for being that guy, but all big boys are boys. It's in the name of the locomotive. At least that's my opinion.
There a Big Boy in the city park in Cheyenne Wyoming. Truly a remarkable machine. I'm not sure tracks can any longer withstand that kind of weight.
the big boy could pull a train 5 miles long with just that locomotive
K
5 miles??? Um.. do you even know just how long 5 miles is????? The Union Pacific or any other railroad don't have sidings that long!!! The engine would have to run where there was a continuous double rail mainline. A class 1 yard might be 5 miles long, but not a mainline freight..... A passenger train with a BigBoy would be a little over 300 passengers cars in that 5 miles dude.
No it couldn't, it was just a made up fact, it would been at least 3 big boys to even start one
These beauties are so well made they will last until new technologies replace them and considering the weight they can so efficiently move,
I don’t see them being replaced for a very long time.
why would 101 idiots dislike this? prius drivers????
:D That's made my day! :D
+danwat1234 I don't give a hoot about a prius, or prius drivers!
***** but its still a PRIUS! did you order the Obama sticker extra? even if it was 2500 for a new battery, (its not) tell me about all that money you save??? LOL!
+Devin Williams And when you get T-boned by a P/U truck the last thing that`ll go through your brain is the radiator...
I had a Tyco HO toy model Santa Fe just like that one. 0:48
I'm not sure what I just watched lol
me too haha
Democracy and patriotism in action.
Miracle Eskimo Battleship - I thought it was antique rail equipment shipping and repair, but if you see all that "democracy and patriotism" in it, well, whatever.
i still remember one show while i was a kid, where they're trying to move Some sort of this train, they mounted truck wheels into the train, and i still remember they got stuck in the ditch or something
Love that F7 Unit....never saw one in person, much less one in operation....it's like giant toy plucked from my MRR. Oh, yeah...the Big Boy was cool too LOL
I have a vhs from the 90's about this train pretty cool to see its still around
John I'd assume that it was because they weren't moveable so they just took them off instead of stressing the other locos and braking the wheels
