I’ve been in your shoes multiple times before.
Confused by all the kayak trolling motor options and not knowing which to get.
They all claim to be the best, but which one is best for you? In this video, I take my years of experience kayak fishing with a trolling motor and honestly review what I believe to be the top 10 best trolling motors for kayaks available on the market today.
If you’re in a hurry on your lunch break, then trust me when I say the overall best kayak trolling motor is the Motorguide xi3. Pick this up, and you won’t regret it.
    Motorguide Xi3.
    Pros:
    bow mount
    spot-lock
    remote controlled
    Simple install process
    Cons:
    Expensive
Spot lock doesn't work great in calm conditions
Doesn't work on all fishing kayaks
    Minn Kota Endura.
    Pros:
    Inexpensive
    Easy install
    Fits most fishing kayaks
    Cons:
    tiller handle
    no-spot lock
    stern mount
The Motorguide xi3 is the top-of-the-line standard for bow-mount kayak trolling motors. That’s why I rated it a 9/10. The xi3 is what I want on the front of my fishing kayak because of the anchor mode, short shaft, and wireless remote.
Even though it only runs off of a 12-volt battery, it’s still powerful enough to propel a kayak faster than anyone can paddle for an extended time. Yet, it’s quiet enough to move and GPS anchor at a spot without spooking fish.
The xi3 has a saltwater option; however, it does not have the short 36″ shaft designed for kayaks. The shortest shaft available for the Motorguide xi3 saltwater trolling motor is 48″. Other than the longer shaft, the saltwater version of the xi3 has all the same features as the freshwater version.
The most significant drawbacks to the xi3 are the lack of versatility (only a bow mount), and it's not a brushless motor. The xi3 was introduced well before brushless motors were used for trolling motors, so it’s about time for Motorguide to update the xi3 with a brushless motor for better performance and further reduce the noise.
I recommend the Motorguide xi3 to any serious kayak angler. It’s not the trolling motor I began kayak angling with; however, it’s the one I now trust on the front of my fishing kayak.
Minn Kota has been a staple in the trolling motor arena for decades, and the Endura series is partly to thank. The Endura C2 will mount onto most fishing kayaks via the lever lock bracket. With multiple shaft lengths and thrust options, you are sure to find an excellent match for your kayak.
It does what it promises, but it’s a little more expensive than other electric trolling motors on the list, so I rated it a 7/10.
You can adjust the tilt and depth of the trolling motor quickly, so if you run into something or it gets shallow on you, you can soon get back to fishing. The shorter 36″ shaft is helpful to keep the motor out of the way, and the bracket makes removing the motor quick and easy for transportation.
I recommend the Minn Kota Endura C2 to the dedicated kayak angler looking to upgrade from a Watersnake or Haswing but not quite willing to spend big money on a GPS trolling motor.

I feel like an affixed trolling motor with an relocated handle control and rudder will solve about 80 percent of the issues. Mount it to a bracket that lifts and all the problems will be solved tbh

I would take a $150 one over having to mount one on the front or back . I like it in the pod . If it was on the bow , I would probably hit something with it going up and down the snake river . I had one at the stern . I use the rudder many times more than a motor .
Having the motor in the pod works great for me . If I go somewhere that I wont be using the motor , noce and easy to pull the pod with the motor out of my lure and put another pod in and ready to go . I have been running my setup for 3 years now . Its perfect for me . and love having a motor on my lure . I wish O had added it back when I bought the lure in 2016 .

It’s a great one to start with! Especially when fishing in a pond.

I'm about to make the move to add a rear mounted, pretty expensive (perhaps 3hp equiv) motor to my kayak to get me to the fishing spot quicker. I have my pedal drive for fishing movement - I want a 6 to 7mph speed to get me there. I have considered getting one of the 70 or 80 pound used trolling motors. I'm curious as to the actual power levels of typical trolling motors rated by pounds of thrust. I see contradictory info and I also wonder if, say a 71 pound trolling motor can be run at full speed for an hour to get to the spot. Any ideas here? I'm looking at Newport Vessels and Torqeedo offerings - not cheap!

Those are the two I would recommend, as I know a lot of other kayak guys run them. However, I don’t much experience with them other than at trade shows.
How long your motor runs full speed depends on your battery. It sounds like you’ll need a 100Ah battery to accomplish your goals but I also know the Torqeedo and Newport have specific batteries that run for long periods of time when you manage your speed.
Sorry I couldn’t be much more help!

It's super handy when fishing and for getting to spots faster than I can paddle but I understand it's not for everyone!

That’s true I don’t use my trolling motor on shallow rivers but I fish some deeper rivers that I use it on.

Why is the entire video devoted to looking at the narrator's face? Why do we need to see his face, at all? I would rather the entire video be devoted to looking at kayak motors with just his voice in the background.
