I’m excited to follow this bucket planting of carrots! If this works, I might be able to grow carrots without the bunnies eating them. Thank you for your time in sharing your knowledge and ideas with all of us! Stay safe and healthy! God Bless!
LOL... I sure hope the buckets live up to the raised beds... We love growing carrots, but we were really surprised by how many people reacted to the harvest videos...
Loved watching the great carrot harvest of 2019. Hoping we have some too this year❤ thanks for sharing and can't wait to see how well they do in the buckets. ❤❤❤
Last year I found used-once food grade buckets on craigslist for $2 each, $1 for lids. They originally had cherries in them. The food grade ones last a *lot* longer than the thin ones you get at Lowe's or Home Depot and they're cheaper if you get them from the right source.
Sounds like you are onto a good deal ! We have had ours for years... I dread replacing them, but that day will come... Appreciate you sharing another way to source them...
Wow Tina with a harvest that big you must have plenty of recipes for using them. Why not make some videos of some of your recipes. I use them many different ways. Shredded in spaghetti sauce. Shredded in omelettes. Cakes , muffins , breads, soups , stews , roasted etc. Would love to see how you use them. Stay happy, healthy and blessed everyone. God bless
We have some recipes up in our Cooking / Canning playlist - one of my favorites is carrot cake jam... We also can some with cinnamon and brown sugar that taste like fancy yams... Roasting under the broiler is another fave... But yes, we do use them any number of ways...
Its a chore getting it all ramped up to speed ! I still have the seeds and plan to start them for mid summer planting... They will produce here late into the Fall...
Sure is a good video. More carrots. I like those carrot seeds. The seeds I used was super small. I got the Mimi carrots. My carrot tops have started laying down but still green. my corn is about 2 foot tall. Have a great day.
Thanks for sharing. I thought I heard a Peacock.... I enjoy their cry. I know I'm weird.... Take care and be safe. Many blessing on you and your family.
I know your methods work, I am now able to grow happy carrots 🥕 thanks to you guys. Therefore I know the buckets will yield a big harvest! Big hugs my friends, stay safe always 🤗
We are glad to be able to organize our buckets this year... We didnt talk a lot about them before because they were always just a blob of buckets on the ground... LOL
Another great video, thanks for all the info. I am trying my hand at carrots in a container this year. I am using your raised bed mix for them and cant wait to see the results as I have never had luck with carrots before. I was going back thru all your videos looking to find one that shows how you thin your plants once they come up. Could you possibly be able to give me an idea on where to look? I would like to see how you thin not only carrots but any of your crops you thin. Beets, tomatoes, carrots beans...etc. Thanks for all the great videos and information, love you guys.
Not sure if we have a video on it, but Mark usually uses the small pointy seam snips for sewing to get really precise with that he cuts and what he leaves... I am sure we can work in a pruning / thinning video in here somewhere...
Growing my own carrots this year. I forgot what the tops smell like but I'm sure my bunny will enjoy top to bottom. Can't wait to smell and eat them. Growing on an apartment porch in a bucket.
I look forward to the harvest time ,I did mini's and loved seeing them growing the tops looked great and they were little finger's so will be awesome to see big carrots done this way .
I had good luck growing in containers in my greenhouse this winter they germinated really quick and grew big in my little containers. I had trouble keeping newspapers on my outside carrots due to our high winds but they’re coming up
I think the real secret is to start off with a carrot variety bred for storage... They are a little more dense (good for canning also) and not quite as sweet (though they sweeten the longer or hotter you cook them)...
Can you add a list of the exact number of tablespoons or cups of the Epsom salt, bone meal and cow manure for this size buckets? Also, can worm castings be used in place of cow manure?
I would not know for sure, and a lot depends on what the base soil needs. The salt can be kept to a min... The bone meal and cow manure wont burn plants (if well composted) so you cant really use too much. And yes, worm castings might even be better...
Did you do a harvest video from what you planted today? I would like to see the follow up if you could kindly provide a link to watch it. I would greatly appreciate it.
Loved the harvest recap! Saw it when you first played it. I am waiting for my other buckets to arrive. Maybe three days. Need a little more info. With my dry climate, is it ok to water several times a day? Also, I have extra card board, is that ok instead of newspaper, which I don't have?
Yeah, carbboard is fine... We were actually looking around to see if we still had the bucket lids, but they have gotten lost over the years... Might be good to keep them watered, but maybe test every once in a while because they will swell and split if they are over watered...
No real reason... I prefer the sand... But the main thing is that the seeds are shallow, are only lightly covered, and allowed to sprout in darkness (newspaper)...
Carrot harvest two years ago I thought you'd never finish picking them out of the ground, there was so many! Hey Mark, what made you put one carrot in a hole and next bucket two? Happy Saturday 👋 JO JO IN VT 💕😄
We always put two to a hole in the end... Just seemed faster to put them both in at once on the second bucket vs going back over them like we did on the first...
How do you store all of your carrots? Do you store in a root cellar, freeze them or home can them? I've never found a very good way to preserve them as when canning them they are mushy and freezing them hasn't been that great either. As I don't have a root cellar was curious as what you do?
We use as much as we can fresh... We barter some, we share some, and we donate some... But for long term storage, we can them... If you click my logo and go to the main page, you will find the playlists... In the cooking / canning playlist, check out the "big and chunky" canning video... The big chunks are how we keep them from getting so soft in the canning process...
Wow... Apologies... I will check and make sure the ads are skippable at least... We have been allowing YT to handle the placement, but it is a new service and they may not have the bugs out yet...
Bumblebee Junction : I just wanted you to know. No problem on my end, I will not watch ads that long. I know to off set the cost you need the little bit Y-tube pays and long ads hurt you.
I had good luck with the variety called YaYa pelleted from Johnny. I have found that now many pelleted carrots are out of stock, I do not think the seed companies "blew it". Last year I can understand the pandemic was new. This year though they have failed their customers.
Hey Mark! With you trying to grow smaller carrots like that, does that mean that Tina has a secret recipe for small size carrot cakes? Happy Gardening! -Bob...
They are a hybrid Nantes but you should really call the customer service people at www johnnyseeds com and get one that is right for you... In your soil... In your area...
Serious question about to plant in an hour. Do you plant by the moon or following the almanac planting days?? I want to do carrots today but heard root crops shouldn’t be planted today according to almanac.
Bumblebee Junction don’t be sorry I’m planting and not planting by the moon on Some of My planting, so hoping I get a harvest. The old timers around here swear that I won’t.
Well... The real answer is that there is no answer... Those carrots could remain in the bed all summer, all winter, and get picked the following spring before they went to seed... All the while, continuing to grow... So what we do is use the "days to maturity" on the seed pack as our beginning date to start spot checking for size by just digging down a little to expose the top of the carrot, and when they get the diameter we are looking for, we harvest... And those days vary greatly due to temp, rainfall, feeding schedule, etc...
We usually wait out the "days to maturity" and then just start uncovering the top inch or so and inspecting them to see when they are the size we are looking for...
We suggest people get ahold of the customer care people at JohnnySeeds or their seed supplier and get a type that fits your growing zone, and the purpose you want the carrots for (sweet eaters, storage, etc)... You should grow what is right for you... Its not a brush off, its the best advice I can give you...

how did this carrot bucket harvest turn out? thnks
Loved that harvest.how do you cure carrots so they remain crisp and not turn soggy?
I think the real secret is to start off with a carrot variety bred for storage... They are a little more dense (good for canning also) and not quite as sweet (though they sweeten the longer or hotter you cook them)...
What I use for lids are the minnow bucket lids!!
That sounds like a wonderful idea !

When do you plant carrots up here for spring harvest as I’m in northern Georgia. Dallas Georgia
Carrots are planted early in the spring for a summer harvest... And late summer for a Fall harvest...

I didn't know you grow carrots in buckets. How often do you need to water after the carrots start coming up when their in buckets?
We pretty much water everything once a day, first thing in the morning before the sun warms everything up...
Thank You for the reply I appreciate it.!
I live in nj is it to late to grow carrots in a bucket now thank bill
Shouldn't be... We are warmer than you already and we just planted, so I would say you will be ok...
So how long did it take them to get that size
