Gary, do you have any plan in place for a time you may not have store bought fertilizer and additives available? Have you tried managing / experimenting with out?
Hello Gary. I want to try to grow in the container next summer. How many plants do you have in that container? And what do I do when they get to tall? Do I trim them down?

I have found using cedar shavings around my plants have kept off every kind of pest so far and I am already harvesting cucumbers. No squash bugs, etc. No kind of pests at all. I think the cedar shavings masks the scent of my plants.
I use cedar mulch in my beds because of termites don't like cedar. I put cedar in my pots because it doesn't rot like regular wood mulch. I put it in the bottom of my pots for drainage and mix my fertilizer in with the mulch because this is where your roots will be in contact. Need to be sure you have one good hole about one inch wide in bottom of pots or 1/4 inch holes around bottom top of pot. This will keep water from standing in bottom of pots so roots don't rot.
This makes such good sense!! ...I feel so dumb right now!! I know cedar trees repel insects of all kinds. Our chickens have always roosted in the cedar trees. We never have had trouble with mites or anything. I do suggest anyone building a coop, use cedar wood!! Do you have any issue with the cedar chips changing your pH?

I just found your video on vine borers. Trying to get a jumpstart on what ruined my gardening experience last year. Needless to say I am hooked on your videos. You are so knowledgeable and great at explaining everything. Thank you so much for sharing! Great videos and information!
Thanks for watching. Dust really helps. Also squash grows fast so have lots of back ups ready and eventually you out plant the borers life cycle. Good luck. Man, you’re serious about your fertilizing, epsom salt, tomato food. I fertilized everything when I planted it & 3 times since May. I used Miracle Grow & mine is doing well. This is my first year doing it by myself, so I’m watching lots of videos. You’re a pro & I admire your diligence, especially in the 98 degree temps. Thanks for the tips! 👍

You have inspired me to plant cucumbers in containers and shown me exactly how to do it. I love your videos and hope some day that my garden looks and produces as lovely veg as yours. Thank you kindly for all of your amazing videos!
My dad just used homemade compost and that's it. He put seven on plants for bugs but not on vegetables. Didnt use to have all these fertilizers just manure. To many chemicals we don't need. Just use organic fertilizer. Miracle grow is the worse you can use and any like it. Any thing organic is better for your soil. You can get magnesium with banana peels and calcium with egg shells. Put these in your garden. I grind up egg shells and put in my pots and make a water mixture with banana peels. Just go on websites and see how to use egg shells, banana peels and coffee grounds for your pots and garden. Throw all your scraps in your garden. My dad did this during the fall and winter so they would break down for spring planting. He used his grass clippings for mulch.

OMG, now I see what was wrong. You have TWO to THREE plants per container. I have THIRTY plants in a 36" container :) I have planted 32 seeds, 30 had germinated. I fertilize every 3 days. I have a device that measures soil moisture, soil fertility, and so on. Every 3 days soil fertility drops to zero. Despite all that I do, plants visibly struggle. Now I know why :) Thank you for this great video! ♥
Thank you Gary! I am trying my hand at container gardening for the first time. 8 bush cucumber plants are started nicely on my deck. Realize I'll be doing a lot of sharing if my yield is good. And likely it will be with your guidance!
This is so much fertilizer and so many different kind that you are using, I like to grow organic so I Only use shrimp compost when I plant and epsom salt after that.I never use any water on the leaves, three plants last year gave me 857 cucumbers with zero problems with any kind of bugs. The difference might be that mine are in a small green house we built and I always plant chive not too far from the cucumbers which take care of all the bugs and for tomatoes the same thing plus I plant sweet basil and radishes not too far from the plant. I have been doing that for 5 years and never had any problems.
That works Please Visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More
you plant into the ground or raised bed? I dont have a greenhouse to keep mine in. and I have green bulb onion. Will that work as repellant like chive?
Lilly Banks I plant in the ground and I have both chive and onions. I plant the onions in the fall so they are already to come up in the spring. I do not know if you would have the same results if it isn’t in a greenhouse but there is no harm in trying.
I've been growing for years and have always had great success with cucumbers, melons, squash etc all cucurbit plants.now the past few years the cucumber beetles found my garden and I can't get rid of them. I've tried neem oil, soaps,bt and others I've had luck with sevin dust but by that time the bacterial wilt has spread I think the trick is to plant resistance verities which I haven't been doing.your garden looks great.keep growing ✌😎
Okay, second video I’ve watched. This guy is good. Concise with relevant information. Subscribed! Very helpful for a new gardener that probably took on too many varieties at once.
That’s me! I planted 33 tomato plants, every variety known to man. I’m almost overwhelmed. Planted way too much zucchini. It’s just me & my elderly father to eat all this. I’m giving away most of it. 😂

Great information Gary, my cucumbers have been producing well and I'm going to try some epsom salt today and hopefully extend production a little longer.
It's probably too late for me to plant cukes in S. Florida in the middle of April, but I'm going to try in a more shady location instead of in full sun. This video showed up in my feed at just the right time! Thanks for always having such calming, informative videos. :)

I’ve love your videos and I have purchased the Neem package. I ended up dumping my first concoction because I only had lemon dish soap that stops red ants in their tracks. Seriously I can stand in a big fire ant hill and surround myself with a circle of lemon dish soap and they won’t cross it. So not knowing for sure figured it would be too toxic for my plants. So remaking solution with some natural Castile soap. I am commenting because I know that clipping one of the seedlings (more then one germinating) so the other can grow more efficiently. I couldn’t bare to kill the other cucumber seedlings because it was so healthy and vibrant. So I cut a seedling from two double germinated cucumbers and I placed them in a bowl of water and they grew strong roots. I planted them in a pot when ready and they are still doing amazing! I took photos through whole process. I read this wasn’t supposed to be possible. They are marketmore cucumbers. Just sharing this here since my husband is tired of me passionately telling him everything going on in the garden. Haha
Thanks for the order. Good to know on lemon soap. I have a hard time removing seedlings too. Most plants will root but you did really well. I might try the early cuke root too. Thanks. I will certainly try this NEXT year! For the last few years, I have had NO cucumbers; big gorgeous vines, but with limited female blooms that even with hand pollinating, did not produce fruit. Every day the plants would wilt in the heat and then perk up after watering, but then, it would seem that I was drowning them Last week, I just gave up trying to save them and pulled them out for fall planting. Texas summers aren't good for most things, but a better soil mix might make the difference.

This is very informative. 👍 I don't have an outdoor water source but I do have peppermint oil so maybe a visual inspection combined with spraying peppermint will deter the invasive insects since I can't hose the leaves off. Thanks!
I live in Maryland also. Have you ever considered putting together a Garden journal with reminders of what to do daily . weekly. etc for the most common plants along with your recipes for pest and disease control. I am new to gardening and something like that would be really helpful. You could also link to your videos for demonstrations. It could cover seed starting indoors through the entire growing season.

I'm new to planting. I planted cucumber seeds and tomato seeds. After seeing this I feel like I should have went to college for this. I had no ideal it was this hard.
Nah just get started. The overwhelming info can wait. Turn some dirt, fill a pot, get some water soluble fertilizer and go. I have new videos that will help with that. I just started as well. This is my first year and so far my plants are doing great without the complicated parts. I’m so sure these things help to yield a higher volume and greater fruit, but my goal this year was to learn and try to keep something alive. So far my plants are producing and growing, it doesn’t have to be hard :) . Learn as you go, and good luck!

Great vid, thx for sharing. Two Questions: 1) How tall is the trellis on the cucumber plant with the yellow flowers?. 2) Did you pollinate the yellow flowers?, if so how did you do it?.
Great video Gary, there is nothing like the smell of a fresh picked and sliced cucumber! Getting the garden ready for spring now here in Central Florida. 10 galloon container for pot. Epson salt is magnesium sulfur. 1 a month 2 table spoon for 1 gallon. 10-14 days water cycle. 7-days organic fer. 15-30. 15 Once a month. 7.15.7 half table spoon. Granular Organic fertilizer/ 1 a month/2 tablespoon. Spidermites starts at the bottom.Spray beneath. Spray beneath 2x a week. Spray peppermint oil spray from beneth. 2 drops per glass water.
So just to be clear Epsom salt once per month Chemical fert every month And do you top dress every 2 weeks with or without the liquid? Or alternate top dressing with liquid fert? What if the chemical once a month lands on a organic schedule? Sorry for the confusion
Great tips. I’m new to gardening, and am having problems with my cucumber plant not producing male flowers. I probably have about 15 female flowers and not a single male flower. I’m using a grow tent with Led lights Any suggestions on what I can do?
I am growing the pick a bushel cukes in 2 containers, & have watched this to help maximize results. Really love the info. 1 question--do you mulch the cukes in the container? I am using a mulch on most of my other container plants (esp tomatoes) what about cucumbers? Thanks.
Also, the ground where we live seems to be working great. Just using the dirt that was already in ground.. first year, heard from past family members that family have always had plants growing. All the flowers we planted around seem to be doing great.. would the same happen with the garden for veggies and fruit
If the ground is great, make compost and skip all the other amendments. Use that year after year. In the ground veggies would respond the same. You have time to make compost now and just use it next year on so on. Wish you had a layout sheet with what to use and when..... new subscriber , love your videos. You are informative and clear. It helps seeing the good and bad side of gardening and container gardening. I’m sure I knew about broken plants releasing smells but wasn’t thinking about it. I usually plant marigolds. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and your mistakes. Please consider the spreadsheets
I never really considered all of the differences between soil ecosystems re: ground versus pot. I feel like I'm taking a master gardener class when I watch your videos! The only time I've really differentiated between the two is when I water with the chlorinated water my town provides. Sometimes the smell is so strong and I've had an aversion to pouring all of that chlorine into a closed system like a pot, so when I empty my watering cans I immediately fill them again and let them sit overnight to let the chlorine evaporate. Do you have to deal with chlorinated water?
Mine is chlorinated by the city but I don't smell it. But I do use tap water with no issues. Containers are very different. A lot of people do soilless mixes like all coco coir. That is when you really need water soluble ferts. Very glad to help.
Yes I have 25 plastic milk bottles that I fill and leave standing in full sun to cook out the chlorine , I put several hole in the caps to keep bugs out and sometimes I just use it as a sprinkle to water my plants.

I just filled a big pot with some coconut core and soil because my ONLY surviving cucumber with 2 fruits and a dozen flowers was killed by a cutworm this morning, then you posted this video. Hoping a container will prevent the dreaded cutworm monster, I couldn't get a cucumber to survive last year either.
I always wrap the stems of my seedlings with strips of aluminum foil to avoid the cutworms. The foil doesn't constrict as the plant grows and I remove them later when the plants are stronger. It works for me.
Dorothy Fu Thanks for the reply. Yeah I used foil last year, the cutworms would crawl over the foil and then cut right above it. Sometimes they were chopping down 5 foot tall cuc vines. I should have used more BT.

Hi Gary. Thanks for all of the good cucumber information. You said you had two cucumber plants in the ten gallon container. I couldn't tell if you had two in the 5 gallon one? I have a seven gallon grow bag and was wondering if it is large enough to support two plants? Also, I have some leggy cucumber seedlings (I'm new at this) that I bought from the store. Can you plant cucumbers deeply like you can tomatoes?
Now a days I would say 1 cucumber per 7 gallon. But you will have to water often when large. It is best to grow 1 or 2 plants in a 20 gallon container. When large and hot, the suck the water out of the container soil.

This video is just in time.. my cucumbers are sprouting and growing fast! These tips will help me get to a great start!
I have found using cedar shavings around my plants have kept off every kind of pest so far and I am already harvesting cucumbers. No squash bugs, etc. No kind of pests at all. I think the cedar shavings masks the scent of my plants.
Thanks for the info 👍
I wonder if I could use Cedarwood essential oil in a spray bottle
Thank you! I have a terrible time growing cucumbers in East Tn.
Gary has the best gardening channel not only from his experience and advice, but his voice is so damn soothing.

So containers are a challenge to figure out the right amounts as the container plants demand a lot when big.

That works

OMG, now I see what was wrong. You have TWO to THREE plants per container. I have THIRTY plants in a 36" container :) I have planted 32 seeds, 30 had germinated. I fertilize every 3 days. I have a device that measures soil moisture, soil fertility, and so on. Every 3 days soil fertility drops to zero. Despite all that I do, plants visibly struggle. Now I know why :) Thank you for this great video! ♥
@@justinlangley9529 No kidding :)
That works

you plant into the ground or raised bed? I dont have a greenhouse to keep mine in. and I have green bulb onion. Will that work as repellant like chive?
Lilly Banks I plant in the ground and I have both chive and onions. I plant the onions in the fall so they are already to come up in the spring. I do not know if you would have the same results if it isn’t in a greenhouse but there is no harm in trying.
How do you use your Epson salt I’m concerned about using too many fertilizers myself.

Maybe drop a cuke seed now. Let the summer heat fade. You might just need to adjust the timing of seeding. Good luck.
Your green thumb is undeniable! 🌿👍

I was just thinking the same thing. It’s a lot of great information. But I need to hear it in a more organized or systematic way.
That would be beneficial
This is very informative. 👍 I don't have an outdoor water source but I do have peppermint oil so maybe a visual inspection combined with spraying peppermint will deter the invasive insects since I can't hose the leaves off. Thanks!
I live in Maryland also. Have you ever considered putting together a Garden journal with reminders of what to do daily . weekly. etc for the most common plants along with your recipes for pest and disease control. Very glad to help.
I'm new to planting. I planted cucumber seeds and tomato seeds. After seeing this I feel like I should have went to college for this. I had no ideal it was this hard.
Lol I wonder how our ancestors did it 😂 surely they didn't go through all this.
Nah just get started. The overwhelming info can wait. Turn some dirt, fill a pot, get some water soluble fertilizer and go. I have new videos that will help with that.
Check out my blog post for more details on Seed Starting Tomatoes Without Grow-Lights and conditions to be cautious of: www.therustedgarden.com/blogs/vegetable-gardening-tips-blog/how-to-grow-tomato-vegetable-transplants-without-grow-lights-principles-examples-planting
I saved this video for seasonal reviewing . Thanks Gary!🥒🍅
Good luck this year

Thank you so much for the tips, my cucumbers are starting to grow as I need some tips to make them grow healthy and produce many cucumbers. Stay safe and have a nice day
Great vid, thx for sharing.
We're a little behind from moving into our new house, but I have a few different things growing already. I can't wait until I get my raised beds built and set up! I have the gardening itch because it's been a while since I've harvested some fresh veggies.
SO true! Such a fun time. Enjoy building the beds.

One question, I’ve been using rectangular totes for my container plant, have you found round ones better?
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I just find fertilizing plants is overwhelming given that I'm a be gardener and so many people have different views.
Experiment and find what works best for you.
Because of a bad back & knees, this year I'm going to try putting cucumber & tomato plants in a raised base with 5 gallon buckets...
That works.

Hi Gary I really like you videos. you have so many I can't find one to give me the answer, how many cucumbers should I plant in a 17 gallon tub ?
Well depends on how much you can stay up on watering and feeding. I would go with 2 for standard size. 3 of 4 for bush type.
Please check out The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop for all your gardening needs at www.therustedgarden.com & Please Ring the Bell (next to subscribe) to get immediate real-time video notifications. Thanks!
Thank you !!
do you plant the plant like a tomato plant by planting low in the pot and adding compost up the stem to get a good root system ?
Your book arrived today!
10 galloon container for pot.
Epson salt is magnesium sulfur. 1 a month 2 table spoon for 1 gallon.
10-14 days water cycle.
7-days organic fer.
15-30. 15 Once a month. 7.15.7 half table spoon.
Granular Organic fertilizer/ 1 a month/2 tablespoon.
Spidermites starts at the bottom.Spray beneath. Spray beneath 2x a week.
Spray peppermint oil spray from beneth. 2 drops per glass water.
Thanks
Can you use both granular and miracle grow liquid at same time
So just to be clear Epsom salt once per month
Chemical fert every month
And do you top dress every 2 weeks with or without the liquid? Or alternate top dressing with liquid fert? What if the chemical once a month lands on a organic schedule? Sorry for the confusion
I second this question
Great tips. I’m new to gardening, and am having problems with my cucumber plant not producing male flowers. I probably have about 15 female flowers and not a single male flower. I’m using a grow tent with Led lights Any suggestions on what I can do?
i have all males and hardly any females... lol what is happening! ugh!

He actually did give all the details... Maybe you can watch again and take notes.
You can buy a filter that attaches to your hose on Amazon.
Gary I like you saw step by step video for fruit and vegetables and flowers. Thanks.
i like the idea of the peppermint oil
That handful you called a table spoon is like 4 tablespoons or more funny.

Thanks for the suggestion on the worm castings i got some and my tomatoe plants are doing great. Can i use worm castings on all other vegtables?

Plant flowers nearby to attract pollinators or pollinate the flowers yourself with a toothbrush or small paintbrush 🖌.

A lot of information, like this video. My consort is pruning cucumbers ? I sow other video with pruning the cucumbers.
You are the best at explaining. Thank you
Thanks so much

Great video. With so much of information some kind of fertilization calendar will help. Does not have to be too complicated. Like Week1 - Epsom salt. Week 2 - Organic Fertilizer. Week 3 Chemical fertilizer. Week 4 Organic fertilizer.
