Why do people wear a red poppy? What is Poppy Day? Remembrance Day 2023 - English Topic

  • Why do people wear a red poppy during November? The red poppy has become an important symbol for those who want to remember the people who lost their lives in the First World War...and subsequent wars. The UK poppy appeal raises much needed funds for The British Legion. NOTE - Since the death of Queen Elizabeth II and as of November 2022, King Charles III will lay a wreath at the cenotaph. Remembrance Sunday is on 12th November 2023.

The leaf is in the wrong position (unless this a mirror image), the leaf should be at the 11 o’clock position. It signifies the 11th hour, when the guns fell silent at the end of the Great War.

The poppy is not a political, religious or commercial symbol. I wore my paper poppy and metallic poppy with pride today and observed the 2 minute silence in remembrance of those past and present. Hopefully all British citizens wore their poppy too.

Actually it is *extremely* political to actively help fund a safety net and pension for the prime minister's imperial volunteers.
Perhaps without such security, many fewer would have kiled and died in the Iraq scam of 2003+.

As Peter King mentions. The correct position is To the Left, over the Heart. The Leaf is orientated to be at 11 O’Clock. This signifies the Hour, The Day and the Month…

Skippy Clarke...there’s always one misguided fool who is quite happy airing his views from behind a screen but can’t summon the courage to shout in the face of veterans in person.
If your going to attempt to be a keyboard warrior please don’t just target random countries but add some facts to these acts of ‘mass murder’.
If you wish to concentrate on Ulster then don’t forget to include statistics from republican murder gangs to add weight to your allegations that just the British are murderers.

His name was Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD, 1st Brigade CFA,CEF (Canadian Field Artillery, Canadian Expeditionary Force).
Born in Guelph, Ontario, he was a third generation Canadian by way of Scottish Presbyterian immigrants. He died as OC (Officer Commanding) of the 3 Canadian General Hospital (McGill) at Boulogne, France and, with full honours, was buried there.
In Canada, November 11th is known as Remembrance Day - which is in my view a far more dignified honorific then the frivolous British designation of November 11th as"Poppy Day".
Major McCrae, MD, Medical Officer and Major of the 1st Brigade CFA (Canadian Field Artillery - as he was then) wrote the poem in the back of a field ambulance a few days after his closest friend, Lieutenant Alexis Hannum Helmer, 1st Brigade CFA,CEF, of Hull, Quebec was killed (May 2cn 1915) during Second Battle of Ypres.
I think it a disgraceful insult to the memory of Lieutenant Colonel McCrae (and to all the Canadians) who died in the defence of, not our own country, but of Great Briton, to not use his military title or his nationality when talking about his poem.

This will insult many but I would never wear a poppy as it doesn't just remember the brave soldiers of WW1 and WW2, but also remembers the actions of British soldiers in Northern Ireland and their murder of civilians there. However I highly respect the British soldiers who served in both World Wars and also observe a minute of silence.

    • @MC14may
      @MC14may 4 роки тому +3

cameron burke ignorance is bliss...at no stage does the poppy ‘remember the actions’ of soldiers in Northern Ireland.
The poppy is a symbol of of all soldiers who have paid the ultimate price.
If you have strong political views about our soldiers serving in NI then do not wear the poppy.
The poppy is not a political symbol so you need to search your sole and either wear it or not it’s that simple

Mireille B VAVAL People start wearing them and selling them from the 28th of October which is two weeks before November 11th. That is the standard period of rememberance but it is a personal choice and there are no set rules. Some veterans and families who have lost a family member wear them all year round.

BUDGET TIP!!!! HERE'S A 'TIP": Instead of buying a brand new poppy year after year after year...just save the old one and put it in a little box and pull it out every November (like you would an artificial Christmas Tree) and you're good to go! And you didn't have to break the bank doing so! $$$$$$$$$$

Who breaks the bank purchasing a poppy? I sure in the hell don't. Here's a better idea, buy a new poppy, give a small donation to a worthy cause. Save your poppy for another year, but still give a small silver donation. Don't be cheap.

In these economically testing times it's good to conserve your cash for your Freedom 55 and as well it's bad for the environment to keep wasting money on 'new' stuff when you don't have to. So I believe in recycling the old poppy. :-)

1)Your donation to the white poppy has funded privileged middle-class idiots to jet the world ‘fact-finding’ arms sales.
Not a single penny has gone to a charity to help victims of war.
      2) 80 years ago a little man with a black moustache named Hitler made millions of people wear a symbol based on their beliefs and didn’t give them a choice.
This man committed murder and persecution on an industrial scale and was only stopped because people the same age as you decided to make a difference and stop the spread of ‘fascism’.
Sparing you a life under a dictatorship and giving you an opinion.
By all means wear your white poppy but remember this..if you are not a fan of global mass murder I suggest you open your eyes to China,Russia,North Korea,Iran because Imperialist England might one day be calling on you to fight for your freedoms(which you take for granted)
