Yea the more time you spend in that zone the more you learn how the read and judge the water. Bill and I have a lot of seat time, so paddling these zones in a sit on top is relatively safe.
My husband and I have been doing exactly this, heading to Mendocino from Chico pretty much every time we get 3 days off, so once or twice a month from about April to October for the last few years. Let me tell ya, out of the water I’m a 54 year old overweight and klutzy woman, but in the water I’m 16 again! Hell, it keeps me motivated to keep up some strength and fitness if only to be able to put the yaks on the roof after a long and amazing paddle. I don’t think we could get tired of the Mendo coast!!Incredible caves and sea life!! Amazing!!! We have some $600 Ocean kayaks. I’m wondering how you guys suit up. I’ve been wearing shorts, sandals, and a long sleeve tshirt under a lightweight rain jacket (and life vest of course), but I’ve been thinking about dry suits or something. Do you wear those? Do you have any recommendations? Are they worth the money? Also, have you guys put in at Russian Gulch and headed north? The caves that way are beautiful! We’ve seen some bio luminescence and although we were not even sure what we were looking at, we still nicknamed one cave The Cave of Wonders. We are definitely going to go out Albion River next trip though after this video. You are so incredibly right on with what you said!! If you are a Californian and you aren’t hitting the coast in a kayak, what are you even doing because you are missing out!! Thank you!!!
Rob Martin in this video I use a 205. Bill is using a 230. For white water and rock gardening I like to shorten my paddle up because I’m using verticals control strokes more than forward strokes. 230 is a better length for recreational use for the average height person.
Would this kayak be suitable for a beginner (kayaked only 4 times) I am thinking about buying a sit-on kayak and have a few possibilities on my list. I thought the Nomad was going to be 'the one' but one UA-camr suggested it was pretty unstable, which has worried me. Seeing these kayaks in quite rough sea shows they can cope OK, but as a beginner, I would be using it on calm water at least for the first few trips. Regards from The UK
Stability is a relative term. If you want a boat that feels like a dock Underneath you, the nomad is not your kayak. It’s incredibly stable but will roll with your hips like a kayak should. I personally would rather have a nomad over any other 10’ sit on top because it’s got soul. For reference in 6’2” 220 and I have no issues with the stability.
@headwater kayak bit random... how tall are you both in this video?? i am 6ft 5 (17 stone) and looking at getting my first Kayak... my local shop is telling me the Roamer 1 (2023) is too small for me and i need the Nomad as it bigger... but looking online the 2023 roamer is the same size as the nomad... is this correct??? any advice is greatly appreciated
Hey man. I found your channel last year. I saw the video "5 kayaks under $300" I used that video and bought the Pelican Bandit 100 NXT. Its been a great boat. I would like aomething I could get into some class I or II rapids. Could you do a video on these Feelfree kayaks? Can they do rapids? Do they make a sit on that can do some light rapids?

Love your life lesson!!
3:40 they can steal your joy by stealing your kayak haha
You were bobbing like corks. Really surprised me how much intentional messing around is possible with those kayaks.

Dan, if you haven't already, could you do a video on winter/cold water paddling clothing? I'm curious about the outfit you were wearing. Thanks!
Ralph Keith sweet id love to! I’m wearing a Kokatat Gor Tex Dry suit.

That was awesome! Getting some use out of the Go Pro now!
Out West with Chris yes. Still edited it on my phone haha.
@@HeadwatersKayak haha, nice.
Nice. So you’d recommend this kayak for the sea? 🥇😇
Nice message, live life through experiences not objects.

Dude, are those thigh straps limited to this yak? I need some of those for my surf kayak.
great video, I have one, just wandering what paddle and shaft length you use? Thanks

Yea but is it stable? Haha can’t tell you how many times I heard this and showed this video. “The boat is stable. Are you?”

Same exact hull on those two kayaks. The Nomad is no bigger. The Juntos is bigger and similar.
Don't try this at home. Dan is like GOD level 💪💪
MooMoo Outdoors nah anyone could do this with proper training.
Great Attitude, Stuff is so minor!

matt crowe this one! Look at what we have them in. Light rapids would be a breeze. Dagger also makes the Roam and that’s a sweet river sit in top.
@@HeadwatersKayak hey thanks! I've already been checking them out on line!
That’s the one I’d buy for river sit on top. It’s a rad craft. Needs thigh braces.
