Kevin Freaking Durant - is the living symbol of a snake...for some folks. He is also the dictionary definition of Disloyalty...for a lot more people. The NBA STORYTELLER wants to really explore what loyalty in the NBA even is. Is it even a thing? maybe when you dig just a fraction of an inch deeper, there you might uncover what is really behind ANY perceived loyalty in the NBA. And guess what, Kevin Durant is not immediately ejected form this conversation.

The thing is though, nobody is mad at Durant for leaving OKC. Maybe some OKC fans are but the general NBA public isn't. It's the fact that he was a hair removed from actually beating GSW, in the end not being able to because of some horrible performances, and then basically just giving up by joining them 2 months later. And it didn't end there, we also later found out that KD was texting Warriors players while still being in OKC...
The whole "KD is a snake" thing started bc of that. Him texting Warriors players while still being an OKC Thunder. Him not telling Westbrook anything, leading it to Russ actually having to find it out like we all did. Via ESPN. And him joining the team that he promised his OKC teammates they'll beat the next year, in the locker room after game 7. Im not a KD fan or hater, he has been a top 2 player in the league for the last 8 years imo. But the move to GSW is something I'll never respect or even understand.

This is a good litigation of the points- BUT We can not take it all at face value
and we cant allow ourselves to get played,
      cause it's ALLLL business.
All of that post game behavior the texting, the saying one thing and exploring another. If you've ever had a job, and considered taking a NEW job, there is ALWAYS this awkward crossover period, where you are really trying to leave, but you can't say anything to your current boss, because the new job is not official. In the real world, folks even get to the point where they ACEEPT the job, before they even TELL their current job. Its the way its done.
And that fact that we "found out" is unique, If we "found out" what players say to their agents, or there friends about their team and teammates and their plans, that shit would bursts everyones bubble. What I'm saying is if we really saw behind the curtain, you would see some really ugly stuff. It's like what they say about sausages and laws, you do NOT want to see how their made.
Here's an for example - Jordan insisting that Isiah Thomas not being on the dream team - and NOT ever admitting it, AND not even saying it to to Isiah's face - theres is nothing Honorable about that move, but for some reason that never stuck to Jordan as Snakish. AGAIN, this ain't playground ball, there are millions and Billions of dollars at stake, and that is Always at play. you must ALWAYS be thinking one-3 moves ahead about you career.
Do you watch baseball? when a pitcher starts to lose their stuff in a game, the manage calls up the bullpen and gets another pitcher to warm up, and the current pitcher may not even know. In sports as in life, you MUST be thinking and acting ahead. The literal ONLY difference with KD is that we "Found out"
Here's another one.. Shaq and Kobe dont get along, Phil jackson quits, Shaq gets traded.. and just a year or so later Phil jackson come back. This was not a coincidence, This is planning, And the way to move forward and also NOT look like a complete snake was to play it out over a couple seasons and not do it all at once. This shit was the snakest behavior of ALL TIME and if we had the text and voicemails from that whole plan we would ALL be disgusted.
and really, the whole going to the warriors, the team that just beat them, this is so deeply overblown. when you want a new job you take the best one out there. why would people, people not even IN the business (fans) NOT allow a human to take a good job, what kind of Authoritarian setup is that. It's like campaign advisors in Politics, who jumps from one campaign to a rivals when their candidate loses. Its like in baseball, poaching a manager from a rival team, or some lower "genius" . And heres how you can tell its silly, If KD would have waited 2 years and OKC and GS didn't play in the playoffs, and then he went, Folks would STILL have a problem. Fans project these Simple narratives onto complex situations. You can't overlay fandom., and rivalries, and game time grudges, over the top of human being's livelihood and life plans.
We can not take it all at face value
and we can't allow ourselves to get played,
      cause its all business

    • @AtodaZ23
      @AtodaZ23 6 років тому +26

I see this respond a lot to people who have the same view point as me. You're comparing KD's move to regular everyday work.
"and really, the whole going to the warriors, the team that just beat them, this is so deeply overblown. when you want a new job you take the best one out there. why would people, people not even IN the business (fans) NOT allow a human to take a good job, what kind of Authoritarian setup is that."
Why that doesn't really make much sense is because basketball and the NBA is COMPETITIVE. Of course you should always put yourself in the best situation possible, nobody wants to see an all time great talent like KD retire ringless. The whole "You're not really an all time great until you win a championship" narrative is really a stupid thing in itself. But back to the point. Like I said, you should always put yourself in the best position possible, BUT, because basketball and the NBA is competitive, people will just not respect a "can't beat them, join them" mentality. That just means that you gave up!!!! And giving up is the LEAST competitive thing you could do. Instead of wanting to BEAT that team the next year, if it's with OKC or even another team(Spurs, Celtics etc), you join them........
So even if you take away the "Snakish" part of it all, because like you said, almost every business move is snakish in a way. The move is still awful because of all those circumstances I mentioned. I wouldn't have had a single drop of criticism if KD joined the Spurs, Celtics, Clippers or any other team he walks in talks with in free agency. It's just the fact that it was the team he couldn't beat, the team that was already on pace to be a dynasty without him, the team that, to be completely honest, didn't even NEED him.
Sidenote: I do not watch baseball.
Another sidetone: This: "It's like what they say about sausages and laws, you do NOT want to see how their made." made me legit laugh out loud.

I really hope people read this thread - really appreciate your perspective here. on competition - I say this, its 100% competitive to the fans - but for the player (worker) that, at anyone point can only be part of the calculation. Simply consider living conditions - why don't stars flock to Toronto, or Milwaukee - or a dozen other small cold or unexciting towns. Kids, wife (non-wives) TAXES, schools, ownership, POLITICS, other opportunities, any of this stuff. And also, how much fun you would actually have doing your job. For fans we want every single player to carry the competition as primary like Jordan..or second stage kobe. But idk (blind estimate) maybe 15% of players even have that as an option - most players are roll players, journeymen. On each 15 man team, maybe 3 are in a position to consider competition as a primary decision maker. Most of these guys aren't even making their own decisions. it is SOOOOOOOO rare that a player, in his prime can make his own decision, and think about this, when it does happen, we often see that player make a weird or unpopular decision. We don't give these player the credit for being human 20 somethings - who want to be happy and wealthy and play basketball.
SO maybe, what if we just stop labeling KD as a savage competitor, and maybe just a guy who is REALLY good at basketball, but is more Human then MJ. Maybe winning Isn't everyones main goal in life... cause thats the strange pressure we put on stars, and stars only.
you said something really key.. the phrase "if you cant beat them, join them" attitude. Man... this is deep (no joke) the catchiness of a phrase is directly correlated to how important we think it is. I'm telling you, the brevity in an argument is more important than the argument sometimes... but thats a side note.. wait but really, i need to come up with a catchy quick phrase to explain this kd scenario. it would be about winning isn't everything... but i'd have to give it more punch, to make the "everything" part more tangible.ok, onwards.
what you are absolutely right about, and I just need to give up arguing is that spectators will not change their mind - KD crossed a line, broke the rules of "our" game. I can't argue that away, cause thats subjective. But i'll just leave this here: maybe KD's playing a different game, that we just dont know how to score yet.
JAY!!!!!! thanks for the convo (so far)

This is about a bandwagoner posting videos about his team. seriously, look at his content and his videos. its more likely is about Warriors or members of the team. just look into it. this dude doesn't appreciate players apart from GSW. speaks alot of BS.

Here to test the theory. Answer is Reggie Miller no doubt. Played his hole career for a Pacers team that was contender only for a few years, and not even big contenders. Kinda the sleeper team. Second option is Dirk no doubt. Dirk was an amazing player who could have left a never contender Mavs squad to join whatever playoff team and make them automatically contenders. Instead he decided to stay and became the leader of one of the most unbelievable championship runs ever.
Edit: Ok, the video went on another direction. Anyway I get your point. Still, Durant didn't leave OKC. I mean, he did. But is not the fact that he left what makes him a snake, lots of players leave their team in free agency to pursuit a championship. That ain't wrong. What's awful about Durant is the fact that he joined their rival. He joined the team that had beaten them in the loss playoffs. He joined a team were he knew he was going to get a championship. He chose the easy path, the LeBron path, to his first ring. Gordon left the Jazz, but he is not a snake. There's a line. A line between being loyal and not. If you put your individual goals with the organization goals, then you are loyal. If you put your achievements hunt ahead of the teams wishes then you are not. Of course that doesn't make you a snake. I mean, Iverson's Sixers were awful, he would have never won a championship with them. He left, as he should. That's because he wasn't the problem, the problem was the 76ers. He is not a snake for leaving, he would have been dumb if he stayed.
What I try to say is that both parts, the organization and the player, should contribute and make sacrifices to reach the top of the mountain. Duncan, Parker and Ginobili with the Spurs. They could have been individually better in another team, instead their goals were neither all star appearances nor MVPs, they wanted to win, and they knew where and how.

    • @1vaultdweller
      @1vaultdweller 6 років тому +5

Nicolas Conforti Loyalty points make no sense. It's the organizations job to satisfy their players so they stay with them. No player should be expected to be loyal for no reason. It's a business, not marriage. Reggie Miller stayed loyal and look how that worked out. He accomplished nothing besides a few all-NBA selections, which he could have achieved with another team

Your videos are so awesome man, the mainstream NBA media are so black & white with everything and rarely examine the shades of grey or look at things objectively. They seem to be so dogmatic in their thinking, weather it's the Michael vs Lebron debate or KD being called a snake or something else. Great to hear that there are other fans out there that can think with a rational mind.

Hey, I've gotta say that although deep down I knew what you just said about it all just being about business I was still angry at durant, not because of OKC, or because I think he owed anything to westbrook. Even though I think what he did in the finals was wrong or unethical to an extent, It's not because of that either. What you explained here holds even stronger to my reason, but I was mad at him for making the finals alot less competitive (On the other hand something good might come of this since now there are alot of teams trying to upgrade to super teams. Still, although maybe irritional, it still pisses me off)

Nobody mad or calls him a snake because he left. We mad because he JOINED THE 73 WIN WARRIORS right after he was incredibly close to beating them 2 months earlier and thus taking away all balance in the nba and taking it the easy way out. KD is bad for the nba business by not making it fun for the rest of the teams in the nba and making it predictable. I know you a warriors fan but there is no way to condone what KD and boogie did and try and spin it to be a good thing.

CHEF! yo, welcome back to the comments - this is a good point - its very personal tho, And I reaaaaaaaally want to hold judgment on what the relationship really was - I think you're right, that they "acted" a specific way. But i also think once we all thought they were friends we willfully overlooked signs that they weren't. Signs that there may be tension and a lessing friendship. Think about it this way - when OKC made their pitch to KD to stay - russ was NOT there - should he have gone? idk, but it's not like he even tried to convince his "Brother" to stay. And the lack of effort is what were mad at KD for.

Maybe but Lebron has the big name, like people calling Jordan the best in 98 when Shaq had become the best NBA player. Just think, who's better offensively, KD or Bron? It's a fair debate and whoever you go with isn't that much better than the other. Now consider defense and for the past 2 (maybe more) years or so, KD has been LIGHT YEARS better than LeBron on that end. Even if LeBron is the better offensive player, the gap isn't as big as their defensive gap is. Advanced stats agree with things like PER where KD has beaten LeBron every year since 2013 up until this year or W/S or VORP where they're partially identical.
Now there's still a lot of immeasurables that have to be added in like the system they play in, communication on the court, and the little things that stats don't pick up, so I'm not fully convinced myself on who's better. But when people have the debate, it's absolutely bull shit for someone to say LeBron and dismiss anything else. If LeBron is still the greatest basketball player in the NBA, it's by a small margin.

    Great video as always.
I've never blamed KD for going to a super team, LBJ did the same thing. Boston built a super team some years before. The Lakers did it before. The goal of teams are to make themselves as good as possible.
I've never blamed KD for not wanting to play with Russ, seems there's a revolving door when it comes to players around Russ but it's never his fault. And for those that want to mention that KD was fake when he said said Russ was like a brother to him, what do you *REALLY* expect him to say? "Russell isn't easy to play with"? "Russell is selfish"? etc . If he had said anything remotely like that everyone around would be talking about how he was divisive and that he was responsible for any chemistry problems.
I do blame KD for being so preoccupied with all the haters, that he designs his shoes around it, that he makes burner accounts around it, that he has himself filmed practicing while uttering all the negative things people say. Get over it dude. Haters are gonna hate. Realize that you just got to be as good as you can and you'll have X fans and Y haters.

I'm sure in the least he'd be a great basketball player.

He's got more fans now than he did in OKC. Also, it doesn't matter where a player plays, he'll always have fans.
Are you telling me you are not a Duncan fan just because he didn't play for LA?
Or should I not be a Kobe fan just because he didn't play for the Spurs?

SalaCommander26 You mean OKC fans or KD fans? Because I'm sure KD fans are still with him

okc fans should shut up when it comes to loyalty... their franchise wasnt even loyal to a town... their owner is a liar

It’s not that KD isn’t loyal. It’s just he isn’t a true competitor. He did “can’t beat him join them” to the worst degree and it pissed people off which it should.

I never saw the KD leaving OKC scenario as a loyalty problem, but more as a problem in that he copped out. He left one of the best, competitive teams, for arguably the already most dominant team. I get that this is likely great for KD's legacy in that he will be a champion, and likely great for his business outlook, but if I was an OKC fan I wouldn't fault him on his lack of loyalty to the team. The real fault seems to lie in his selfishness. People look at KD, rich and super-competetive, and think "Well this guy has it all already, going to the warriors is all about him." And that's where it will always be unforgivable. When people look at this scenario they hate KD because he was selfish and hurt there team, meanwhile the team got nothing in return.
The reverse is seen in the Isaiah Thomas situation. The Celtics weren't loyal to him and yet no one seems to fault the Celtics team for being selfish. And the reality of that situation is that we aren't mad because we got something in return, in the form of Kyrie Irving. That was a business decision that was good for long term business, just like KD'S decision was good for his personal business. The difference is Kevin Durant's future business looked really good for him (the man would have more money than anyone could reasonably spend in multiple life times and he was on a team that would compete year in and year out). I wouldn't hate KD because he wasn't loyal, I would hate him because he quit. He walked away. Like Lavar when he pulled his team off of the court because he didn't like the refs. KD felt the scales were tipped to heavily against him, so he went to the other side. That's where I think the real fault lies. Forget loyalty altogether, KD went to the warriors not because he knew he couldn't win, but because he wanted an easier time doing it.
