I am just sad that the fact that you can’t spell grass without a g followed by 2 s didn’t make it into the video (there was a typo because instead of a g it was supposed to be an a)
Starlow was done so dirty in this game tbh. She's no where near as bad in Bowser's Inside Story or Dream Team. She's better in Brothership, but that's probably because she's not a main character anymore.
I was thinking the same thing. Like yeah, she went too hard on him after the Shroob fight in BIS but she has it out for Luigi in this game and it contributes to people thinking she's just the Luigi hatebot.
Ngl, this is just reminding me how fondly Luigi is treated in Brothership. He's seen as an equal to his brother by most of the residents of Concordia, and has more than his fair share of good moments. It's just nice after so many games that treat him with varying degrees of punching bagginess.
Yeah but I'm also glad that it's not completely gone. The problem wasn't Luigi being a joke, it's how they told those jokes in PJ. There are still many funny moments with Luigi in Brothership, like a good amount of the cannon landings but it's Luigi's comedy done the right way. An outside factor or his clumsiness/inherent goofy nature usually getting the best of him leading to an over the top reaction instead of everyone but his brother being like "this guy sucks".
The Shroob insult makes sense. Back then Luigi hadn't done much to prove that he was in fact That Guy, so Starlow was doubtful that such a coward could be so brave and so good in a fight. In Paper Jam she has seen Luigi be useful in BIS and VITAL in Dream Team, yet she STILL talks shit.
@@beatzdyer Overall, Paper Jam just feels like character assassination for Starlow. She had a bit of a mouth, sure, but it was light ribbing most of the time towards Luigi. They just cranked it up for some reason in Paper Jam to an unacceptable level. She's a bit better in Brothership, as I mentioned before, but there's this one moment where she refers to Luigi as "Mario's Brother", and that just pisses me off. Does he not deserve to be addressed as his own person after *3* adventures? That's the worst she gets, thankfully, but that will forever be in my memory.
57:20 I am honored to have spread misinformation. Actually, the only reason that gag happened is because i was miss remembering how long the game was. But it was funny so it turned out good in the end.
Gotta say this, I really respect how you try to actually think about how you like the games you play, why you like them or dont like them, and the pros and cons of the games no matter how you feel. You dont immediately end your feelings on "bad game because I lose" or "game different therefore bad." You have something that I feel like a lot of people these days are lacking when judging video games, something I don't really have a term for yet. A combination of patience, the ability to see into the creators' vision, the ability to see into different perspectives, and the willingness to have as much fun as you can. Among many things, that is why you are The Don, and I greatly respect that
Ir she chooses to repress those memories, which is fair considering how Luigi was turned into a mindless slave before being forcefully morphed into a giant death god that was piloted by a demented clown like a giant magical flesh mech.
@@beatzdyer yeah, that could also be a possibility. but I also wanted to get close to saying Dimentio in the comment without saying his name directly for who the hell knows why reasons.
The newer Paper Mario games can't really fit into same continuity as the first three games. The OGs are more so stylised interpretations of Mario's actual adventures where the whole paper thing is just part of the aesthetic and not a constant that the world revolves around. The newer games use paper as a literal plot device and basis for how the whole world works and is presented as an alternative universe set within a storybook. Despite sharing the same title, these two vastly different worlds are not compatible with each other and they should not be treated as the same thing.
Also Paper Jam had minimal tutorial via the Action Guide and a fast forward button, which were honestly a good addition. It was nice it was carried over with Snoutlet School for the most part and fast forward via holding B.
I think the luigi bullying is one of paper jams worst qualities, like it feels actually mean spirited and not funny compared to inside story and dream team
It’s by far the most any Mario game has pulled the “Luigi’s the butt of the joke, please laugh” card, and it’s always present in Paper Jam’s dialogue and not a random single jab at him like it is most of the time.
In those two games he wasn't bullied much. In dream team he was finally earning respect only for starlow to show that her brain is as smooth as her body in Paper Jam
Absolutely agreed. Slowly but surely people started taking Luigi seriously over the prior four games and it's all just undone. Luigi really gets a place in the sun in Brothership which is so nice to see.
Honestly you are completely valid for being mad about the "Kamek looks like every Magikoopa" thing because I can't ignore the fact that a unique Magikoopa character has already existed for a long time and she comes from the Paper Mario universe (Kammy Koopa) and they just refuse to bring her back
The king bob-omb fight is B- until you realize that you can actually survive the attack that he does when the timer runs out. You auto win the fight when that happens but you don’t get any exp
I know it probably won't be done but I kinda hope they use that idea in the future. I do really like Kamek and it's a shame he has nothing that distinguishes him from a regular magikoopa.
@@castform7I mean an easy way to also fix that would be to remove the white parts from their robes by making them blue as well. Since I still want to see blue Magikoopas. It’s similar to how Toad is supposed to be the only red Toad with a blue vest but unfortunately they don’t always keep that consistent much to my frustration.
i'm not entirely satisfied with that solution. I'd rather Kamek have some sort of design that makes him look more important than the other magikoopas, rather than him just keeping the design of the generic ones and only using other colors of them. Giving him a black robe or a robe with some sort of design on it, maybe different glasses. Make him as distinct from the species as Kammy is (and bring her back too, i hate that they've basically shelved her outside remakes)
It still pisses me off that they could had picked far more interesting characters from both the world of paper Mario and Mario and Luigi for this collab, but no! Instead it’s just some generic bs we seen 100 times! Anyways gg for clearing the brutal “only use Paper Mario” challenge!
They couldnt actually. Alpha Dream stated after PJ that nintendo forced them to only utilise established nintendo characters, thats why you see no reference to previous paper mario or MAL characters (with the exception of starlow). So the unoriginal setting is 90% nintendos fault, the boring stale plot is their fault.
@@notsogreatjagras4314 yeah, the whole concept failed on the base of them being forced to use Sticker Star Paper Mario. This really could've been a crossover for the ages.
@@Nirual86If Paper Jam ever gets remade well a LOT of changes will need to be made such as including Paper Mario exclusive enemies like Koopatrols and having enemies in their original designs from the first 3 Paper Mario games.
@@krisdeltatraveler I haven’t played through all of it yet, but I haven’t had a problem with it. The music is amazing, the bros, peach, and everybody look great with their new models, and the setting, new characters, enemies, most importantly, the Luigi logic have been incredibly fun to use, fight, meet, etc. I think it just boils down to nitpicking the new island by island formula they tried. With limiting the time that you have for side quests, feels like they really set a good pace
46:54 I completely disagree, PIT probably has one of the darkest stories in any of the rpgs, second to spm, the final battle will literally garuntee the extinction of at least one species no matter who wins, toads get killed and turned into batteries, the shroobs are essentially a parasite upon the world.
But outside of the forest and the final fights the shroobs cannot be taken serious. Tell me you took the big green guy with a lolipop as a serious threat. The game had some darker things every now and then but still is kighthearted abd goofy.
@spiritbaki108 yeah 90% of the game was jovial, the other 10% was kinda dark. Dropping a few drops of coffee in water doesn't make it super bitter, just a tad bit bitter.
@spiritbaki108 calling the entire game dark because of a handful of moments is like calling silent hill 2 a comedy because of the handful of jokes th cast tells. The moments are dark but the game throws little mushrooms in lab coats with swirly glasses at you, a rock with an angry face, and a giant fat Yoshi with egg based mini games inside. Based on you logic that makes the entire game a joke because of this handful of moments. That's a joke from me but it's the logic you used, it's a Mario and Luigi game, it's not that deep, they are creepy goofy aliens, the game has dark moments but ain't dark overall.
Lowkey one of the best parts of Paper Jam (in my opinion) are the optional amiibo cards you can unlock using the Toad, Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, and Bowser amiibo. They're just upgraded versions of battle cards, and you can only use one amiibo card per amiibo per battle, but some of them have completely overpowered effects. Want to prevent all enemies from taking any actions for like 4 turns? Fully heal the entire party? Earn double coins and EXP after battle? Deal 10 damage to all enemies 8 times, for a total of 80 damage? Revive all fainted bros? You can do all that and more. Plus, they have really cute custom art referencing other mario games on each card - such as mario with a coin block helmet from New Super Mario Bros. 2, or yoshi in his Yoshi's Island style. All in all, considering you unlock them after Petey Piranha, the very first boss, it can massively reduce game difficulty for any kind of run. Kind of an odd thing to lock behind amiibo though
They completely break the game. In the game you can get a non-amiibo battle card that reduces Bowser's level by 5. And there are amiibo cards that let you use a battle card again after using it. And it works on Dry Bowser, the optional superboss as well. You can put 2 and 2 together.
I always love these videos. They're so well done, great cinematics, top notch commentary, and there's so many emotional moments, I feel I'm watching some top teir drama while lying on my couch eating cool ranch doritos, staring at my phone to watch a man play as a stack of sentient paper. Absolutely love these videos, and constantly play them back for the heartfelt and comedic momements by one of my favorite content creators. Never change, Mr. Shnack. (And don't ever be embarrased. Nobody is perfect, and you'll always be better at games than one person in your chat...)
The developers must've actually taken the criticisms about Luigi's treatment to heart because he's treated very nicely in Brothership while also still giving him some funny physical gags.
The reason the devs didn’t also add Paper Luigi to the game (at least to be playable) was so players would only have to control 3 characters instead of 4. Partners in Time is forgotten yet again
Tbf you're still only controlling two people at once in the game. While the brothers are still alive the babies are basically like extensions. You don't control all for at once. There's never a point where you control more than two people at once. I completely understand why they didn't go for it.
The only reason the game was rushed was because of AlphaDream's crisis. Due to their debt, they were trying to get anything new out before the inevitably went bankrupt. It had potential, but they weren't able to meet it. Truly a sad way to ruin AlphaDream's superiority
It's crazy how they decided to try and solve this problem in Brothership by making every other magikoopa orange. Funniest possible solution for the kamek dilemma
the "if i had a nickel for every time everything something happened" being cut off is so real thank you for that im pretty sure literally EVERYONE in the world has made that joke at least once
Thank you Don. I love the way you write and pace your videos, but you've also inspired me to be more vulnerable with my own thoughts about games and the media I consume. starlow is only really super bad in paper jam, but that's just because paper jam as a whole is mean to luigi even the "did you defeat them with some crying" in bis has her apologize after
@@expertdesperado6 I am still glad she wasn't just put in a vault. She has appeared in enough M&L stuff to where I consider her a mainstay of the side series. Plus there's something really nice they do with her that I won't spoil.
Hell, Snoutlet does the opposite of Starlow and gives Luigi a fair bit of credit and praise which is amazing- he's a genuine friend to both of the Bros.
Superstar saga is superstar saga, its amazing no need to explain, Partners in time has toads being drained of their life and shroob genocide, bowsers inside story has *vore* , dream team has luigi face fondling and dream stuff, while this game has paper mario stuff and... eeeeeehhhh?
God, your videos are just so beautful. You're so funny, everything is structured so creatively and interesting. You always have inteeresing stuff to say. It's always a treat and I look forward to your next uploads!!! :D
I think the wild thing is that although paper jam is the worst m&l game, it's just aggressively mid and I mean the actual definition of mid, not bad but not significant, hell I beat it and didn't even remember the desert area. which I think is a testament to m&l game design and honestly if it's story was better and it didn't have the constant time trial and papercraft battles it would genuinely be a really good game. At least that's how I see it.
I honestly like that he kinda retools the rules as he plays. Sure he could keep it as “I jumped on them a lot” but that doesn’t make for a super engaging video. Plus it’s funny and I don’t usually care about rules that much yknow
I recently replayed both Dream Team and Paper Jam and I feel the bullying of Luigi is worse in Dream Team. The dreamy mustache tutorial is a true nightmare. In the other luigi dream tutorial, luigi sleep talks to starlo how doing so and so affects the dream world. But for the stache tutorial, nah she just pulls on his mustache to shut him up without her realizing it's affecting the dream world. I know in Paper Jam the harassment is more verbal and noticeable but I feel he still has it worse in Dream Team.
If I had to describe Paper Jam in one word....I wouldn't know what to say so let me use multiple. I agree with the fact that in a way, they celebrate mainline Mario more than the two side series this game presents crossing over. It sucks to hear about the development of this game because now it feels like the developers had higher hopes for this too but stripped it back to the point of it being generic and in some ways, passive aggressive. Like the constant Luigi bullying is dialed up here. I'm fine with Luigi being the butt of a lot of jokes in the M&L series because 1. it usually comes from his own clumsiness or some outside factor messing him up and 2. it has always been a point in the M&L series to show why both brothers' names are on the title. Here, even the princesses *who respect him* get on his case. I don't want to rain on the parade of anyone who likes the game. It does do some pretty neat stuff and if it scratches someone's itch, who am I to tell them they're wrong. I just personally feel like the game didn't reach its full potential and fell into being pretty generic unfortunately.
Listening to your talk on the Boo forest, made me think of a great idea. In that area when everyone split apart, leaving only Luigi and Starlow. Would be really cool if Luigi actually had to fight some Boos. And maybe in the area is when we actually run Paper Luigi, and have him confused on how he is in this area, looking for his Mario (and actually talk) and tag along for a bit (give him basically Paper Mario stats but more Luigi, basically bulkier but weaker Paper Mario, but without the Copy or Trio Attacks, and a darker green UI instead of orange), and do a fight with two Luigis, than you run into Mario and free him, but that’s a trap for King Boo. Where he would taunt having Paper Mario, and during that, Paper Mario tosses the Copy and Trio blocks to Paper Luigi and then banished to the background, where it would the two Luigi’s and Mario for the rest of the fight (which would be fitting given its King Boo), and when you free Paper Mario have them have a conversation where Paper Luigi decides to go protect the Peach’s while the trio takes out Bowser, but not after saying they’ll win for sure with his Mario, rounder counterpart and the strong handsome lad.
I know people love to dunk into this game but i loved it when u played it haha. I must have low standards Also i tend to not be the kind to jump around out of the expected areas si never really ran into the glitches the game clearly has.
I think something that's difficult as a creative when looking at transforming the media we've consumed is the difficulty that comes with not being "cringe" to those we try to share that transformation with. Be it fanart, fan games, videos, fanfic etc it's got it's own challenges that come in exchange for talking about an already existing medium. Sure your not creating the thing from scratch but your still putting pieces of you and how the medium affected you into it, and then contrasting it with someone elses. To two people who loved the Galaxy as an example, to one person it was just a really good mario game they played it had their fun moved on to another it was THE game. I think it's more than fine that you struggled with this blind challenge run and honestly I enjoy it alot more personally than the far more "prepared" if I had to pick a word for it. It feels alot more you than the pikmin documentary staring CAPTAIN DON. That while random always felt like you had a good enough grasp on the game to be able to be a cocky player. I understand if you decide to go back to playing games your far more confident in. Just so you don't seem like your going out of your way to attack people who enjoy a specific game but if you decide to do far less challenge focused blind playthroughs of a series I'd be so hyped for it.
They gave us the snarky relationship between her and bowser, to a small decent side character in dream team, to a complete douchebag in paper jam I’d say she had a 2/3 not bad, I haven’t played brothership though so I’m not counting her in that one
@ spoilers:she isn’t bad in brothership aside from like a few mildly rude things to Luigi She also has a pretty nice scene with bowser. Brothership basically returned her to her BIS era
what makes me curious is if you'd be willing to do something called "Nerve mode" of DS Bowser's inside Story if thats possible, where the rules are: 1. Jump/Hammer/Punch/Fire Breath only. no bros/special attacks allowed, as for Specifically BIS, its not required. Durmite is a sole exception to no bros attacks cuz the straw heals for 40ish and has 20 hp, but it should be possible Jump/Hammer only. Wiggler.. All I can say is minimize the amount of times leaf guys appear to minimize total exp, vacuum's hard required for this fight Chakron, who doesn't give exp, which if +1 level is done right, both bros should be at exactly level 19 for both Chakron and Junker all solely cuz Chakron doesn't give exp and doesn't really count as a boss. Bowser Memory M and L will trap you into their fight after you beat Fawful express, so you can't leave til you beat them. the brick block break attack of M is a bit jank hitbox wise so you can be stuck here for awhile. 2. Stache/Horn only on level up. must get +3 Stache/Horn each time on roulette or its a reset, this is extremely important for the last few bosses in the game, thats why +3 is required. 2. no equipment(includes the weakest Boots/Hammer and Bowser's weakest attack gear as these can be unequipped.) or healing blocks/items. BIS level scaling helps to make up for having absolutely nothing. exceptions to this are specifically Challenge medal(must be gotten as early as after Scutlet is beaten), which must be on at all times. and the 2 set full-heal points for the bros(Badge tutorial and 4 sockhop fight) Bowser specifically, cuz Vacuum is important, is allowed to heal on Beehoss cuz he dies in 1-2 hits anyways. this's also especially cuz Dark Bowser's Fire breath+falling rocks is jank hitbox wise, so Bowser needs the full hp. Giant Mushrooms in giant battles are legal, cuz those aren't your inventory, only a temporary item. 3. a choice of either minimum level or +1 level per area arc Boss. like if its Bowser's turn in Story before his boss/giant boss, he gets +1 level and only him. if its the bros turn for their boss then its them. exception to this for +1 level is Broque+Broggy,, so it'd be wise to avoid all encounters, save and fight Broque to see the exp gained. as well as Blooper Statue 4. no badges, exception to this is specifically the last 3 bosses in the game. 5. the shroob fight's forced at the earliest available point ie right around before Junker, no +1 level for the bros for this fight, and it only gives 700exp so its fine. 6. Junker's a 2k hp mario solo. also don't bother freeing Luigi, trust me I tried and it will just throw him back in the junker cans. good news is Junker's saving the run via protecting Luigi 7. Dark Star, I can confirm both bros w/0 speed upgrades or equips are hard-required to be at level 35 for mario to out-speed Dark Star cuz of how its vulnerable cycle's tied to it and both bros's speed stat. at level 35, Mario gets an extra turn in the cycle. Dark Star will also start healing for 30 hp after strictly, the 2nd vulnerable cycle, and it can heal up to 60-120 or more if too slow to kill the satellmites. at any level lower than 35, and I can confirm having tested this at level 22, the lowest on +1 level, this fight is impossible all cuz Dark Star goes first. lastly, the 4 color orb attack Dark Star does, specifically from top to bottom w/4 of the same color red/green orb. this, and I can absolutely confirm, is a frame perfect Jump dodge that will likely wall you for awhile. if jumped wrong by the 2nd orb, the 4th orb will catch the bro right in their hitbox right as they jump. I have seen this happen to me a lot. it is brutal and, worst of all from my experience, it seems guaranteed to do this at least once. this's why Dark Star's the hardest boss in DS BIS aside from how aggressive it is, all cuz of that frame-perfect attack. this's where the exception to no badges comes in, Excellent+POW! badge's x2 Damage effect is required here. however, the bros are strictly not allowed to level to 35 until after Blizzard Midbus is Defeated. 8. Dark Fawful. the 5 turn wait time for Vacuum helmet is another reason why Excellent+POW! badge's required, combined w/a combined total of 4k hp between both bosses and a trickier Star ray at half hp where its "Memorize pink Star or die." I can absolutely confirm DS BIS is completely possible Jump/Hammer only. and its a pretty satisfying challenge, alongside seeing how monstrous some bosses like Dark Star actually are without the aid of what normally makes the bosses easy(bros attacks and equips) It may be tedious yes, but this's effectively the hardest challenge the series has to offer, by using only the basics. there's even a series of videos on nerve mode for partners in time too, which I was inspired by. Brothership's version of this's legit even harder, but is completely possible no gear Jump/Hammer only too (excluding 3 specific fights)
Just as a reminder, at some point, nintendo made a hard limit on how many unique character designs were allowed in mario rpgs. which is the main reason so many characters are just generic and no longer unique.
Don, you always manage to tell a great story and have such interesting visuals and dialogue between the gameplay you truly represent the best of this website

I honestly love love LOVE these videos. Not only because of the sheer quality and effort put into it all, but also because of the way you go about it, how you talk about the game from an honest yet calm and understanding perspective. You make me want to take a step back and truly try to see the intentions and goodness in games that I would otherwise just cast aside because "game bad lmao". Please keep doing what you do, you're an inspiration.
Honestly this game is kinda crazy for challenge runs (especially a no dodging run because bosses like Wigglerand Kamek have attack patterns that could be plopped straight into a different turn based rpg and easily end up being one of the stronger super bosses) mostly just due to the combat system of the Mario and Luigi series Also about the music at least for Dream Team, Paper Jam, and the remakes Yoko Shimomura the composer for Kingdom Hearts was also the composer for those games which is the explanation for some of the music feeling like it was from a different game than the Mario RPG that has two Mario’s or like 500 Luigi’s Also one last thing I’m pretty sure the Bowser anti trio attack thing is supposed to be unfair with it purposely not giving very reliable tells for when to jump because it’s mainly just supposed to stop people from spamming trio attacks instantly
Why this game is bad: the map is boring, the history is nothing of new, this game is 80% capture toads 20% play the game, the enemies are just bad and luigi is just a punch bag in the history
The best trio attack is the longest one where you have to hit the circles. Because (most) bosses will split into 4 (or more) pieces making you deal 4 or more X the damage.
I think they should've kept Attack Pieces in this game. I get that the Paper Toads sometimes serve basically that same purpose, but if you're gonna make me run around grabbing random bits of litter, why not keep the system that already makes me feel motivated to actually do that?

This has to be an alternate timeline of sticker star bc the paper big pokey has a sticker crown
It’s still crazy to me how the actual final boss of a Mario game is Luigi becoming a GOD
Paper Jam had really, really great battle gameplay, solid music and not much else.
SOME of the paper ideas were cool, not the papercrafts tho. And the final Luigi bros attack is such a nice reference.
@@beatzdyerI enjoyed it but I'm not giving it another run. I even gave Dream Team another run.
The Papercrafts were okay. No real opinion on them.
@@beatzdyer Gotta say, Mega Thwonk is one of my favorite Bros. moves.
Also Paper Jam had minimal tutorial via the Action Guide and a fast forward button, which were honestly a good addition.
It was nice it was carried over with Snoutlet School for the most part and fast forward via holding B.
@@kuro2378 I was going to call minimal tutorials a "little thing", but after Dream Team it really isn't a little thing. It did that well.
I think the luigi bullying is one of paper jams worst qualities, like it feels actually mean spirited and not funny compared to inside story and dream team
It’s by far the most any Mario game has pulled the “Luigi’s the butt of the joke, please laugh” card, and it’s always present in Paper Jam’s dialogue and not a random single jab at him like it is most of the time.
if it was only starlow then it would probably be alright but the princesses and toads, it genually starts to sound like no one likes luigi
And in Dream Team the “bullying” actually was intentional to help build Luigi’s character. It makes the final Giant Battle so much more worth it.
Honestly you are completely valid for being mad about the "Kamek looks like every Magikoopa" thing because I can't ignore the fact that a unique Magikoopa character has already existed for a long time and she comes from the Paper Mario universe (Kammy Koopa) and they just refuse to bring her back
One of the highlights of this whole run was you spending forty minutes on the Kameks fight, saying “trust the process” and then WINNING??
The power of *trust the process* is not to be underestimated.
The king bob-omb fight is B- until you realize that you can actually survive the attack that he does when the timer runs out. You auto win the fight when that happens but you don’t get any exp
I remember when playing it as a kid the first time, Luigi survived the explosion, but I went back to fight him because I wanted to beat him "for real"
The whole Kamek and Magikoopa thing was fixed in Brothership. Kamek is still blue, but Magikoopa's are orange.
It could have been better if we could get Kammy back, in general, getting new original characters
FINALLY KAMEK IS UNIQUE
i'm not entirely satisfied with that solution.

I completely disagree, PIT probably has one of the darkest stories in any of the rpgs, second to spm, the final battle will literally garuntee the extinction of at least one species no matter who wins, toads get killed and turned into batteries, the shroobs are essentially a parasite upon the world.
But outside of the forest and the final fights the shroobs cannot be taken serious. Tell me you took the big green guy with a lolipop as a serious threat. The game had some darker things every now and then but still is kighthearted abd goofy.
@@notsogreatjagras4314 "But outside of the things that made it serious, its not serious"
@spiritbaki108 yeah 90% of the game was jovial, the other 10% was kinda dark. Dropping a few drops of coffee in water doesn't make it super bitter, just a tad bit bitter.
@@notsogreatjagras4314 But adding a few drops of dye does turn it that color. Lets stop the unrelated metaphors

Bros attacks are fine enough but having to manage four characters is like doing the button test but they added 5 colors

The only reason the game was rushed was because of AlphaDream's crisis. Due to their debt, they were trying to get anything new out before the inevitably went bankrupt. It had potential, but they weren't able to meet it. Truly a sad way to ruin AlphaDream's superiority
Wonder why they were in big debt, did the games really do that bad?

One of my favorite things about Brothership is that Starlow has almost no purpose
When I saw our companion not being Starlow I was like "YES, Luigi is not catching strays for no reason this time"
they massively cut back on luigi catching strays in brothership, you could probably count the amount of them on half a hand.

I was worried about any Mario & Luigi game being considered bad enough to be "the worst", all because I legit forgot Paper Jam exists.

As someone who played it: Probably the worst M+L... And I still enjoyed it thoroughly.
Beautifully put : ) really appreciate the input fr
I must have low standards
Also i tend to not be the kind to jump around out of the expected areas si never really ran into the glitches the game clearly has.
16:00 *You can't just rip off the goat Stuffwell's line and fly away without any consequences, you oversized tennis ball.*
1:03:00
The Don has the best taste in background music, Rage Awakened is amazing
7:22 That attack is actually in the petey piranha fight, but you missed it.
Starlow is better in Brothership.
She's also not as bad in her debut game.
Paper jam lowkey fucked up starlows character forever ngl
They gave us the snarky relationship between her and bowser, to a small decent side character in dream team, to a complete douchebag in paper jam
I’d say she had a 2/3 not bad, I haven’t played brothership though so I’m not counting her in that one
@ spoilers:she isn’t bad in brothership aside from like a few mildly rude things to Luigi
She also has a pretty nice scene with bowser.
Brothership basically returned her to her BIS era
what makes me curious is if you'd be willing to do something called "Nerve mode" of DS Bowser's inside Story if thats possible, where the rules are:
Wiggler.. All I can say is minimize the amount of times leaf guys appear to minimize total exp, vacuum's hard required for this fight
Chakron, who doesn't give exp, which if +1 level is done right, both bros should be at exactly level 19 for both Chakron and Junker all solely cuz Chakron doesn't give exp and doesn't really count as a boss.
2. no equipment(includes the weakest Boots/Hammer and Bowser's weakest attack gear as these can be unequipped.)
or healing blocks/items. BIS level scaling helps to make up for having absolutely nothing.
exceptions to this are specifically Challenge medal(must be gotten as early as after Scutlet is beaten),
which must be on at all times.
and the 2 set full-heal points for the bros(Badge tutorial and 4 sockhop fight)
Bowser specifically, cuz Vacuum is important, is allowed to heal on Beehoss cuz he dies in 1-2 hits anyways.
this's also especially cuz Dark Bowser's Fire breath+falling rocks is jank hitbox wise, so Bowser needs the full hp.
Giant Mushrooms in giant battles are legal, cuz those aren't your inventory, only a temporary item.
3. a choice of either minimum level or +1 level per area arc Boss.
like if its Bowser's turn in Story before his boss/giant boss, he gets +1 level and only him.
if its the bros turn for their boss then its them.
exception to this for +1 level is Broque+Broggy,, so it'd be wise to avoid all encounters, save and fight Broque to see the exp gained. as well as Blooper Statue
4. no badges, exception to this is specifically the last 3 bosses in the game.
5. the shroob fight's forced at the earliest available point ie right around before Junker,
no +1 level for the bros for this fight, and it only gives 700exp so its fine.
6. Junker's a 2k hp mario solo. also don't bother freeing Luigi, trust me I tried and it will just throw him back in the junker cans.
good news is Junker's saving the run via protecting Luigi
Dark Star will also start healing for 30 hp after strictly, the 2nd vulnerable cycle,
and it can heal up to 60-120 or more if too slow to kill the satellmites.
at any level lower than 35, and I can confirm having tested this at level 22, the lowest on +1 level,
this fight is impossible all cuz Dark Star goes first.
lastly, the 4 color orb attack Dark Star does, specifically from top to bottom w/4 of the same color red/green orb.
this, and I can absolutely confirm, is a frame perfect Jump dodge that will likely wall you for awhile.
if jumped wrong by the 2nd orb, the 4th orb will catch the bro right in their hitbox right as they jump.
8. Dark Fawful. the 5 turn wait time for Vacuum helmet is another reason why Excellent+POW! badge's required, combined w/a combined total of 4k hp between both bosses and a trickier Star ray at half hp where its "Memorize pink Star or die."
I can absolutely confirm DS BIS is completely possible Jump/Hammer only.
and its a pretty satisfying challenge, alongside seeing how monstrous some bosses like Dark Star actually are without the aid of what normally makes the bosses easy(bros attacks and equips)
It may be tedious yes, but this's effectively the hardest challenge the series has to offer, by using only the basics.
there's even a series of videos on nerve mode for partners in time too, which I was inspired by.
Brothership's version of this's legit even harder, but is completely possible no gear Jump/Hammer only too
(excluding 3 specific fights)
That knuckle cracking after starlow insulted luigi gave me pure joy.
Just as a reminder, at some point, nintendo made a hard limit on how many unique character designs were allowed in mario rpgs. which is the main reason so many characters are just generic and no longer unique.
This is making me want to play Brothership more, since it gives the characters actual personality instead of Mario and The Dickriders.
Even as a small stupid child I knew paper mario was so good that I basically just let the bros die so I could only focus on paper mario
i still can’t believe they change starlow’s personality from bowser’s inside story

Honestly this game is kinda crazy for challenge runs (especially a no dodging run because bosses like Wigglerand Kamek have attack patterns that could be plopped straight into a different turn based rpg and easily end up being one of the stronger super bosses) mostly just due to the combat system of the Mario and Luigi series
Also about the music at least for Dream Team, Paper Jam, and the remakes Yoko Shimomura the composer for Kingdom Hearts was also the composer for those games which is the explanation for some of the music feeling like it was from a different game than the Mario RPG that has two Mario’s or like 500 Luigi’s
Also one last thing I’m pretty sure the Bowser anti trio attack thing is supposed to be unfair with it purposely not giving very reliable tells for when to jump because it’s mainly just supposed to stop people from spamming trio attacks instantly
24:19 I know this is sarcasm, but the boomerang flower is genuinely my favorite powerup.
