Great video, dude. Thanks for the shout. Totally agree on the contrast issues. The icons are... well... they are what they are but at least they're readable-unlike the menus.
About the icon your right. We'll I saw in a video of macOS big Sur someone in the comments section said: The Battery icon looks like a dead 2009 android phone.
I’m really struggling to understand why they would go backwards in terms of icon design. The gradients make everything look outdated, and being surrounded by cleaner icons makes them stick out even more. Why would they do that?
I personally though the re-design was lazy, they took IOS design and implemented as much as they could with Mac OS, I don't like it.. Apple's answer to this is that "you'll get use to it"... lazy....
Lazy? of course they took things from iOS, just to make it uniform! So MacOS and all the other OS’s are uniform. And just relax this is the FIRST beta. some icons are just an placeholder that is going to be fixed later on!
Window's new design language (fluent design) and Google's design language (Material) demonstrate neumorphism perfectly. Flat iconography with realistic shadows and lighting. Apple's iOS design also demonstrates neumorphism beautifully. What the hell happened here.
I like most of the UI. The transparency and rounded corners look really good IMO. But some of the icons really stick out. Forget that they are ugly, they just don't go with the rest of the design.
I feel like Apple designer are just trolling. They need something that makes others talk about their products as this gives them free marketing. Then they will fix it in future updates.
Well the guy who designed this is also the guy who designed iOS 7, an OS version whos overall design and function was quickly changed within the next update 😂😂
@@spencerrr9878 But at least iOS 7 was a consistent and uncompromised design, and although people sort of hated the super flat/shadowless design, future versions of iOS only slowly added depth and shadow back over the years.
@@puddingmango well yeah, I dont mind macOS Big Sur (besides that damn battery icon) but ik a lot of people HATE Its design so they at least have hope it will change.
Exactly my thoughts. I expected something like this when Jony Ive left. After seeing how dark mode was implemented on iOS/iPadOS (complete blackness instead of shades of gray, as in macOS) i knew they went into direction of what people think they want, instead of uncompromised design (and that's weird, because that complete black looks awful in most places - run 2 dark apps, side by side on iPad. They change to light grey and look so much better). If you think about it, this is just going back in time. Widgets, return of 3d. I like overall flatter shell and getting rid of all those gradients from headers, but there is so much wrong there...
Idk why they made a huge update like this I really liked the way Mac os looked before the update, it was a great competitor to Windows but now it looks like iPad os on a laptop or monitor
As a massive Apple fan I agree with everything you say. It feels like a windows update, like they’ve spray painted the surface and not actually focussed on uniformity and consistency
I agree with you - what a mess of a design! It's like someone walking into the kitchen blindfolded, grabbing 10 random ingredients out of the fridge, throwing them into the pot and saying "Dad daaaaa! Dinner!" A "Dog's Dinner", more like! By the way, just to critique your critique - you talk about redundancy but preface your thoughts by offering us an "initial first look". Redundancy! You can't have a second first look! First is initial! I know it's a thing people say on UA-cam but....redundancy!
Are you really talking about usability on an OS that doesn’t give you a calendar when you click on the time? Big Sur removed the only thing I used the “Notification Center” for: the calculator. Come on. UI/UX isn’t even close to iOS. It’s just the result of the portion of the sales iPhones vs Macs cover.
Your rant is 100% warranted. And I mean 100% where the "100%" text is hovering over a three dimensional cylindrical version of a flat iconographic representation of a batery with a semi-cilinder on it's side that you cant't really tell if it is really meant to look like it sticks up higher than the volumetric batery icon's outer hairline or if it's just a failure in conveying that shape's volume, which seems like not even the designer knew exactly where exactly anything over there stands.
Privacy is sadly by so many people underrated: like „nice to have, sure, but is it going to improve the usability of the UI?“ 😅 it‘s an aim to protect our identity beeing a product!
I can't agree more with everything you said in the video. I just can't understand what happened... sounds like bureaucracy ate everyone's brains at Apple and the designs just went through, nobody cared to check them out.
The safari background got me like 🤦🏻♂️ i mean sure, if you want that great. But I’d rather have actually useful features implemented, like perhaps sidecar being improved. Idk, I feel like there’s a multitude of more useful features that could be added. This kind of apple bullshit drives me insane
People in 2013: "iOs 7 design sucks. These icons are poorly designed" Same people in 2020: "Big Sur's design sucks. We want a design more like iOs 7" Me: 🤷🏻♂️
haha true, I don't know it's look always wrong for everyone, but I think apple do a great middle ground by using neumorphism, just implement it in bit wrong way.
What the hell were they thinking? Probably after Jony Ive quit, the rest of the design team just went crazy and did whatever they wanted out of rebellion. Fellas, you shit the bed on this one.
I will not update to macOS 11 if this ugly AF design stays. the dock icons look like a child drew it. The control center is stupid bc there’s a TouchBar already.
We're all gonna get used to this eventually. This was the exact same reaction when iOS 7 ditched the skeuomorphic 3D icons for flat, colorful icons. And we all got used to that. Same thing applies to OS X Yosemite.
So I think a simple way to summarise my feelings, Apple you’ve turned my Mac into an iPad, and I’ve tried using iPad and iPad apps to replace my laptop/desktop and I don’t care for it, touch/mouse are very different inputs and they don’t work well together
Fun fact : Apple will never gonna change these icons whatever we do or say, afterall we'll have to be used to it and time by time they slowly update them
Worse thing is, he's RIGHT! The whole drop shadow and texture feels like Android design from 2010s. Not that they are the worst, but Apple can do better.
iOS 7 was very confusing when it came out but iOS design and usability is so much better now. Same thing could happen to macOS in a few years. Also, iOS 14 had new icons and widgets in keynote but they aren't in iOS 14 beta yet.
what’s the point of putting a square border around every icon? safari, quicktime, settings.......? why? it’s the absolute worst and it makes it so much harder to differentiate between the icons. it’s also just ugly and messes with the balance
Just a thought... this weird control center... on Macs with a Touchbar, can't they just after clicking on it make the control center appear in the Touchbar? They could make every option appear in the row... and the sliders would make sense suddenly. What's in there now seems a substitute for Macs without Touchbar. EDIT: OOOPS you mention that too 😂
Design for software hasn't been front and center since Steve passed away. He seemed to be the only one with the eye for every detail in design that no one has stepped up to the plate on since. iOS 7 was the first stumble and hasn't been consistent since iOS 6. Now the Mac will follow in iOS 7's footsteps. IMO.
I completely agree with you. It's is not functional and simply beatiful at the same time. That's a shame. The key power to Dieter's Rams design, embraced later by Ive, was to create something very clear to interact with in such a clear and simply way to just looks beatiful. Those overall design seems leading to a strange direction. I mean, maybe simply use the same language to iOs and macOS. I usually have concerne about neumoprhism, since those examples you brought in lack on relations between elements, hierarchy, which lead to confusion. Generally speaking this looks like an "in progress" work, that needs to be fine tuned following some main principles.
For sure It will be a touch screen next year (I quite like the concept that is floating around of an Iphone 13 that can run MacOs and be plugged in a Laptop frame)
I don't hate it. I like the idea of it. I agree with most of what you pointed out. All of it can be fixed and made to be consistent if they hear enough criticism and choose to adjust. We can only hope.
while apple is weirdly cryptic about the 4k videos in safari it seems to me like they support AV1 codec which is enabled for some videos on youtube, but it's certainly a minority edit: it's not AV1, it's been confirmed that it's VP9 - UA-cam's own codec
Big Sur looks so great, surely subjective, but it’s the best looking macOS in my opinion and I just think they did a great job. Especially those animations.

Windows is a design mess.
Microsoft is working their ass off for the design. Yeah, the implementation is not smooth but the quality exceeds Apple, imo. At least as of now.
I think the Windows design is very messy. Different icon design style everywhere, in start menu, in windows sidebar, toolbar, etc for example.
