After watching this I was fully prepared to start disassembly and get going but decided to try using a hairdryer on the screen while it was still mounted on the wall. Tried for a few minutes then let it cool down and switched it on and it seemed a bit better. Took batteries out again and gave it a really good blast, playing the hairdryer all over the screen till the whole screen darkened. Let it cool down for 5 minutes then replaced batteries and it is absolutely perfect!
Thanks for this comment :D this worked for me aswell! Saved a lot of time! Just 2 or 3 minutes with the hairdryer. Also the screen was not 100% visible after i was finished with the hairdryer but i pushed a little bit on the screen and that worked.

Worked a treat , did it a couple of times heating it and cooling it with the hairdryer and now my screen is working perfect and looks brand new!! Thanks to both of you , you’re both legends!!

Thanks for the clear and concise video. It worked for me. The one thing I would add was that when I tried using the clips i had to hand, they were quite big so i found that the LCD wasn't able to get hot enough to turn blue in the areas it needed to. I was concerned that it would over heat if I tried to guess if those areas had turned blue. As I had nothing to lose, I took off the clips, put the screen on a flat surface, covered the light panel and ribbon with a piece of metal to deflect and hopefully absorb as much heat getting to it and then fairly slowly with a heat shrink gun took the screen up to that blue colour. It took maybe a few minutes and i tried not to scorch it. patience at this point is needed i reckon. Once assembled works perfectly and so far is staying that way. Yeah! Thanks so much. I love fixing stuff!

In the 15 years or so I've been on UA-cam this is probably my second ever comment. Just want to say thanks so much for this excellent video. Mine wasn't working at all, and it had been that way for a couple of years. Was looking to replace it completely but I found your video. For other people: I used a fan heater until the screen went dark grey, probably took about 4-5 minutes. The first attempt didn't work at all. The second attempt worked - and now it's 100% perfect. Next dilemma - none of the buttons were working! Had I damaged the PCB? I saw some advice about cleaning the buttons with rubbing alcohol and I did that - there was a lot of grey gunk that came off. I put it back together and now every button is working, and it's just like new again. Thank you so much Mark! 🙌🏼
It is not the display which causes the problem but the ribbon you mentioned in this video at 8 min 20 sec. The ribbon is glued to make good contact. After a number of years the glue doesn’t hold on the way as it should. Then the display turns weird… By heating the ribbon only and after that pressing the ribbon (back and forth with for example a blund pen) to the display while the glue cooles off everything makes good contact again. I’ve repaired numerous displays this way. Works great every time. And there is less chance of damage to the display. And no need to remove the plastic display cover. The obove is just ment to finetune your excellent video Mark.
Really useful video - followed all the steps which made it really easy to take the unit apart and put back together again. I found 30 seconds on a toaster did not do anything, so tried a hair drier on full setting and it worked a treat. All characters are now visible. Cheers Mark
Thank you SO much for this, was a little dubious whilst dismantling my thermostat. I thought it might never switch back on again. Wasn’t put off when I put it back together and the screen was worse than before, was amazed it worked at all!! Went back and did it again, now it works perfectly. I used a hairdryer though until the screen went grey.

This worked well when I followed your instructions except that I used a hairdryer (1 minute on high heat). I then found that the display continued to improve for ten minutes or so after I put it back together. So patience is rewarded.

This is the 3rd year I've done this. It works fine until the late spring, when (fortunately no longer needed) it starts going flaky. I think it's a summer/humidity problem.

Brilliant thanks Mark, tried it with nothing to lose and waited for the blue colour to appear. Worked almost 100% first time. Had just one digit missing but it came back the next day so now complete screen 😀. Your a top man.
I never watch UA-cam so this my first ever comment but it definitely warrants it. This worked for me first time. I have reasonable electrical knowledge but found this easy to follow. I recently moved into a rented house and the landlord did not want to sort the problem out or buy a new thermostat. I don't have a toaster so used a hairdryer for probably less than a minute on both sides of the glass and just squeezed it together. Thanks Mark.
Followed this to the letter, and my device now works perfectly - saved me £80!! I am now officially a genius (according to the wife) although I didn't actually tell her I got this from UA-cam!! Many thanks Mark!!
Well produced video, very detailed on disassembly òf unit, which is not that obvious on first attempt, or subsequent attempts after passage of time. I've carried this procedure out a couple of times now, but still need reminding. On this occasion, I used a heat gun to heat the glass, which meant I could see the glass turn a dark colour evenly all over. I then held it, glass down, on a flat solid surface with pressure applied evenly all over until cool. This restored the screen perfectly first time. Hope this helps. Thanks again Mark.

Mark, Thank you for a very clear video on this screen repair, works a treat. Okay, you may have to repeat a few times to get the full screen back but little and often is the best way for sure. I have heard of a number of people who just cannot get on with the replacement unit for the CM927 now on the market. Keep up your good work with these videos.

Thank you for your excellent video Mark. I have been having a go but also based on my electronics development engineering experience I would like to offer the following comments & possibilities for improving the process (1) The toaster method is a bit hit and miss, fierce and violent, in terms of temperature control. Why not set your domestic oven to no more than 120°C and put a heavy baking tray in it, then when it's up to temperature ( check with infra red gun thermometer) put your LCD board assembly ONLY in the oven for an initial maximum of 3 minutes. Based on: (a) Maximum semiconductor junction temp of silicon devices is 150°C and (b) all sorts of plastics for low temperatures, windings connectors etc are rated at 130°C and (c) I haven't yet looked at what the LCD liquid crystal display is rated at. The fan oven is a more even controlled temp. (2) When you take it out of the oven press down the ribbon connector along its length with a screwdriver or spatula as it is probably here at the taped / glued ribbon connector that the defective connection lies and not in the LCD itself. (3) Instead of reassembling the entire unit it is best to test it running. Whether from the 2 x 3 volt battery cells or a bench power supply set to 3V get a power supply that ends in red and black crocodile clips that you can connect to the big square gold plated pads on the lower main circuit board (RIGHT WAY ROUND). Then you can test the display minus any switches etc out of the case, and either re bake or re- press the ribbon connector etc. and repeat without having to reassemble the unit. If the LCD goes black during the baking it can recover when it cools down. My CM927 is not too bad now but it is in my tenant's house and he pays me good money so I will probably fit a new controller for peace of mind and customer goodwill. Rubbish piece of counter- sustainable engineering by the way Honeywell - shame on you - we have come to expect a whole lot better from you. Kind regards - Dave Barrett.
That's a great tip using the oven at 120 degrees. I turned a baking tin upside down so it was easier to take the LCD out with a pair of tongs. I put the LCD in face down on the tray with no other protection or pressure. I left it in exactly 3 minutes and laid the LCD face down on a double folded tea towel. I used a small thin oven glove to apply finger pressure as it was cooling down paying particular attention to the ribbon area. The display originally only showed a couple of lines and dots and is now as good as new!
thank you for the tip, felt safer than the toaster. Used it on mine which was showing half the digits, now the display is perfect! (did 3min and pressured with clips)
@@daznwen @Dave Barrett @Mark Ballard LTD, OMG tried several goes at the toaster method to no avail. Nothing to loose on oven method. BOOM same method Darrren used with fan oven set at 115 (tested with eat gun). After exact 3mins double layered T towel and light pressure until cooled (another 3 mins). worked a treat. I do love a helpful community.
I think you are basically suggesting a reflow.
Nice thought, but my gut feel is the display will just melt.
Not sure where you studied but last I saw the reflow for "leaded " solder was around 185 c and lead free was higher.
You may be smarter than me I guess, , never tried a toaster myself, in theory it may work if one could regulate the heat and remind folk to set it on its side and also turn the eject button off, .

The prior posts by others may require verification.
Simple method is to google melting point of solder.
Leaded solder is still to be found on many devices and has a lower melting point than the latter stuff, but still no where near as low as the numbers suggested

Some displays are fitted in Dips , who am I to talk though, I only worked pretty much every industry over the years in mainly R&D positions.

Great tip! It worked first time and I got all the digits back. I used a heat gun on the glass side only (to avoid damaging the circuitry) waving it gently back and forth until the screen went black all over then stopped. I left the screen for about 15mins, until the normal greenish colour returned, and then reassembled.
My honeywell cm921 got to the stage where I literally could only see the backlight and no digital display. This fix worked for me and it looks brand new again. I only had to do this once but I improvised and used some strong pegs to grip round the edges and then used a hair dryer to to heat the glass up for around 5-10 minues, all the while repositioning the pegs every few mins to make sure I'm heating all the screen. My glass didn't go discoloured at all so I think this may be a safer way to heat it up than the toaster. Thank you Mark for posting this informative video.

Thank you for your video, I tried the hairdryer method someone else mentioned didn't work for me. I followed your tutorial step by step but don't have a toaster so used the grill putting the screen at the lowest possible place away from the direct heat 2 mins later popped it all back together and I now have a working screen which I haven't had for three years thank you so much ❤
Can't believe how easily I fixed 2 of these. I used the hairdryer method discussed in the comments & used it on hot for about 3 minutes and it only took 1 attempt. My only issue was a battery connector falling out. If that happens you need to put it back in place before the circuit board or the unit doesn't work. Anyway coffee money sent, cheers Mark!

To be fair a newer model honeywell is about £70 but it's always nice to save money & time.
I tip my hat! It's truly astonishing how, in these times, people frequently discard items that could easily be repaired with just a bit of knowledge. In my situation, success came on the first try. It required only about a minute using a hairdryer from a distance of 10-15 cm. Admittedly, I was somewhat concerned about potentially melting the screen.

So I followed your disassembly , assembly - very good . Before I started. I switched the central heating on which is set to 60°. I Sellotape, the screen to the side of the radiator for about five or 10 minutes, then put it in a sash, clamp hand tight, put it back together. Everything works perfectly.
Worked first time. Fidliest bit was getting glass and associated circuit board out and in. On the clear plastic cover there is a very small plastic 'spike' which has to be aligned with hole in circuit board. Also the bulldog clips I kept to edge of screen and toasted it slowly till it was all grey with purple/blues on the perimeter. Thank you for the great video.

Yay, fixed mine. I only had a couple of croc clips thus used them to hold the screen whilst heating (until the screen went black / blue). I then placed the screen (facing down) on a flat surface and applyed pressure with my palm for a couple of minutes until it had cooled. Took a couple of tries but now looks as good as new. Thanks for the tutorial.
I’ve just watched your video to learn to fix my Honeywell thermostat after the lcd failed . Just one attempt and it’s up and running like new . I amazed myself dismantling it and reconnecting it, and job done in less than an hour. I used wooden pegs to clamp . Gave it a bit of heat using hair dryer , and then briefly held over the toaster . Thank you 🥲

Thanks, I've done this before but forgot how to take the unit apart, 3rd time i have fixed the screen using this method. Seems like soon as the weather changes and there is a hint of condensation the screen goes.

I’ve just done this method but with a hairdryer! I didn’t separate the back light… once i removed the LCD display I heated up the front until the glass darkened slightly and turned the unit over and placed it on a tea towel and pushed pressure down on the back side using another tea towel and waited for it to cool. i reassembled and everything worked spot on!! I did notice the display shown room temp at 28° this did come down in about 15mins or so. (I’d say target temp for heating up would be around 30-32° as a good guess) 👍🏻

Thank you very much. Sorted mine with clamps and a hair dryer. Did two heat cycles to black on the lcd screen.
It worked! thank you so much! Took 3 tries and ended up using a lighter clips (as a final attempt) and now the screen is working again. Current temps says that it is 24 degrees Celcius. Which it is clearly not, but i think it is a bit high due to the fact I almost set it on fire haha. So we'll see once it is cooled down if temp is correct. Either way thanskss

It worked 1st time on my 10 year old Display unit used my wife's small crafting heat gun ( but a hairdryer should also work )

Hi Mark, may I ask what the difference between the new Honeywell heating controlers for new Valiant boilers and Valiant own brand controlers. I understand that Valliant are very much more expensive and not so user friendly, but can they do the same efficient job.
