  • This short film provides highlights from the 2022 Osoyoos Lake Water Science Forum “Nk’Mip (Osoyoos Lake) - The Heart of the Watershed,” which took place Oct. 27 - 29, 2022 in sẃiẃs (Osoyoos), B.C.
This was the 4th water science forum, with previous events held in 2007, 2011 and 2015. The theme of the 2022 gathering was "bridging Indigenous and western approaches to knowledge, science and management." Its purpose was to connect residents and researchers, policy-makers and water managers with a shared interest in the health of the lake -- a waterway that is important for salmon, agriculture, the people that live in the Okanagan-Okanogan valley, and all that lives here.
As noted in the Syilx (Okanagan Nation) Siwɬkʷ (water) Declaration: “siwɬkʷ is a part of us and a part of all life. siwɬkʷ must be treated with reverence and respect.” This understanding grounded the three-day focus on our relationship with Osoyoos Lake.
The event was hosted by the Osoyoos Indian Band and the Town of Osoyoos and presented by the Okanagan Basin Water Board, the International Joint Commission, the Okanagan Nation Alliance, and many other partners.
