Eddie Van Halen was listening to a Allan Holdsworth even back in 78 because Holdsworth by that time had already played with Tony Williams lifetime. He had already played with Gong and Soft Machine, both records Eddie Van Halen knew about. If you go back and listen to those records, especially Tony Williams you can hear pretty much where Eddie got the idea for some of those wide interval ideas.
