Representation for representation sakes means little if the roles they take are not that interesting and feel like a charity case than a genuine interest from the world
I know a lot of people like to think Latinos don't care about representation but we do. Especially brown latinos. Like I know Cameron Diaz is technically Latina, but she always did white roles, people like us could not really identify with her. That's why Wakanda Forever was so special to a lot of us because a different side of Latin America was shown. PLEASE I hope everyone watches Blue Beetle too, it is currently not doing well but I thought it was fun and emotional story with great representation.
There can be a 500% increase, but it doesn't matter if it there's more of a poor or negative portrayal of Asian people in Hollywood movies/shows. If we're reduced to background, disposable or one dimensional characters, is it something to be celebrated?
Majority of those roles went into self hating AF with a love interest that worship WM or XM. All while at the same time demeaning AM. Truthfully I rather the Asians get no media representation than AF worshipping WM.
100% Agree Well said. The end goal of Representation is equality. If “representation” only reinforces racist stereotypes, then we’re back at square one. It doesn’t f*ckin change anything in the end.
Brenda Song tried out for a role in the Crazy Rich Asians and was denied due to that shes not Asian enough, or maybe doesnt speak Mandarin, but Hmong. Dont take wrong. She would've been a good role due to her humor and disney characters she played. In America, we want to be known as Asians, but a lot of bigger Asian countries, smaller ethnics do not get represented. Sad. That says a lot about being Asian in America and then being a smaller Asian ethnic in Asia.
For which part? Maybe she wasn't right for the role? I also don't think that it's fair to expect one movie like Crazy Rich Asians to be the one to represent all Asians. I see the project more as just one of many types of Asian stories and opening the doors for more diverse Asian stories.
@bargainhuntermama I'm not going to say what role. You're smart enough to research it yourself. Perhaps Google it, UA-cam it. Why wouldn't a movie like Crazy Rich Asians represent a more diverse larger Asian ethnics rather than just the one. Seriously! I thought it was called Asians. Why wouldn't it be Crazy Rich Chinese? I can see why Indians don't want to be Asians. Don't get me wrong. I am from the motherland, myself, and respect my ancestors' place of origins. There is nothing to do with her not getting the role for not being Asian enough, but rather... I don't know, maybe not popular in the media's eyes and to draw or increase that US and especially like Fung Bro said it, the East Asian market for more revenue? Maybe it's because she's not talented enough, don't know? If other less actors and actresses are there that are not of Han Chinese decent, why can't a Hmong, who is a 5000 year old indigenous of Zhongguo, be one of them? Hmm. Just a thought. Shouldn't it? Or maybe better yet, she doesn't fit the role like how the producer said it. Unless if she's fluent or funnier and a male, then maybe she can play Ken Jeong's role.
Well for years like 90% of hollywood roles were only white people so who cares. How is it that Friends had an all white cast despite taking place in New York City? Not very realistic either. Ya'll were fine with that.
@@darthvadeth6290 you can't FORCE representation. when you step outside and see black and asian people at the store, is that forced representation? It's not.
I think the real problem is that they’re still the lack of acknowledgment when it comes to representing the true diversity of Asians and all of the different ethnicities of the Asian race. Asian groups are generally all lumped in together as a whole and counted as 1 group. That’s doesn’t happened to just Asians but with Latinos as well. Since I’m Cambodian, I haven’t seen my ethnic representation on screen since The Killing Fields and my ethnic group is not part of the rise of Asian representation in Hollywood.
@@davy209 I totally feel that. And it gets harder when you start thinking of all the mixed race people out there. Being inclusive is great, but there are only so many talented actors. Should they hire a mediocre filipino-american actor or possibly someone that can look the role and act great? I am just celebrating that we have made progress and hoping that the progress continues. I still can't find anyone in media that looks like me and it sucks. Especially for Halloween times lol.
I'm South East Asian and most of the people I know from that region don't care if Asians are represented in Hollywood films or not. Many of them still watches shows and movies from Thailand or South Korea, they don't care about Hollywood stuff. Personally, I watch movies for entertainment, whether is from Hollywood, Europe or Asia, I don't care if the characters on the screen looks like me or not. As long as the story is good, I'll watch that show or movie.

If DC was able to make decent live action movies, they should make a live action of Batman: Soul of the Dragon. Richard Dragon in that movie was basically a cross between Bruce Lee and James Bond.
Jet Li getting a hug from Aaliyah in Romeo Must Die will always be a microcosm of Asian Men’s romantic life in North America. Go take up those passports bros. 😂
That's a blast from the past! Speaking of which, in another role he was in, "Kiss of the Dragon." The Jet Li character, also did not get the girl. Only in the movie "One" , did he get the woman & it was pretty cool. Apparently maybe, didn't make a big enough impact, though! Lol
Most moviegoers will struggle to even name a handful of Asian actors. Being part of the supporting cast is one thing, but how many Asian protagonists are getting their limelight in the industry? Sounds like the Pareto principle at play. A handful of Asians are getting the predominant share of the roles, hence why people can't namedrop beyond the Jackie Chans or Simus.
I think generally it’s a good thing. However, when you look at the details of things a different picture is painted. As a POC I notice that many times the Asian male leads are generally half white half Asian (usually with stronger Eurocentric features, think Henry Golding, Andrew Koji in “Warrior”, and even Daniel Henney in “X-men origins”) I’ve heard some asians say that the acceptance of asian features but only when they’re mixed with white is not an accurate reflection of the majority of the Asian population, almost quite literally like a “whitewashing”. Additionally, even movies such as Crazy Rich Asians has had its criticisms. In the short term it’s very easy to be critical of things but I believe that this is a good starting point and framework and look forward to Asians as a whole to be presented not as a stereotype, or monolith but people with unique and varying experiences.
It's pretty crazy how Gleaming The Cube has the best depiction of Asian immigrants and Asian Americans in a Hollywood film. That movie came out over 30 years ago lol. Also, watch it if you haven't. Great movie!
Here my opinion from this topic: I'm understand that representation is important but however it's how to tell a good story (don't matter it's a tv series or in movies), but some people forgot that Brenda Song was in The Suite Ol f Zack & Cody and Vanessa Hudgens was in High School Musical back in the 2000s (even though Vanessa is half Filipina) so it's probably nothing new under the sun. But however there are some films that have full asian cast like: Boogie, Turning Red, Joy Ride, Blue Bayou, The Farewell, Harold & Kumar movies, etc. But I'm get where like certain people coming from though.
I go out of my way to avoid Hollywood when I can, especially since they historically despised Asians. I grew up on Bollywood and HK Cinema. In addition, I find Hollywood story telling subpar compared to Asia. Apart from Stranger Things, I don't watch/follow any US content. IMO the best way to send a message to Hollywood is to not spend money on their 💩
That's true. I was going to say Phillipinos, but I suppose, hundreds of years of homogeneous breeding, kind of bred out the European physical features. The only thing Spanish left about them are their Surnames! So, yes, technically I suppose those mixed ones can claim Asian heritage, but only if they were raised at least with the majority of their Ethnic culture.
Anglo beauty standards will dominate no matter how many roles are played by Asian actors. This is 2 years against decades of discriminatory portrayals; until and unless there's some Asian Don Juan played by Takeshi Kaneshiro scoring all the women in a mainstream American movie, it will be hard to imagine these additional portrayals significantly impacting the image of Asians any time in the near future
Great stuff guys. Looking for more content like this. Here is what I think about wasians. To me they cant really represent asians (It's like Steve Nash cant represent Africa, it's just not the same) and here is why: - Childhood: totally different experience than real asians growing up in the west. Starts with mom being asian and white dad (99% of wasian kids). So they probably didnt grow up around asians, they dont know all the"asian" festive and tradition behind. - Culture: Their moms chose to marry a white man because they hate their culture and own men and want to live that western lifestyle. Real asians still live in their communities, that's why we have China/Cambodian/Lao/Viet towns in the US and even some European cities. Also I kinda feel most wasians are only proud to be asians now because all the hype around asian food on social media, kpop, etc. Growing up in Germany whenever I talk to wasians, they think like Germans and it's totally different when I spend time with real asians: the way we eat, our sense of humor, the things we talk, experience/struggles with dating(asian)girls, family always comes first, etc...
I kinda don't care. Its quantity over quality at this point, the writing in most Hollywood movies is so bad none of the movies Asians are in are any good and from the sounds of the writers strike nobody's even getting paid well for these roles. 500% increase and still the most memorable asian movies are still Jackie Chan's movies from the 2000s

It’s great to see more Asian representation on film now and before, and what’s really awesome is that Asian content are not being all lumped in together defined as “Asian” as a one size fits all category. There’s more acknowledgment of the diversity of Asians among ethnicities, and it’s about time that Koreans are telling Korean stories with Korean actors, and vice versa with Chinese and Japanese people.
