That's why I think the term, "representation matters" has become a joke. In the context of being in the community and helping other Asians navigate in diaspora, the term applies greatly. But if it's just to get a seat in the table of Hollywood or other media outlets to help their own careers, it feels like more for selfish reasons and climbing the career ladder.

If Asian Americans want better representation then PBS should be ones making especially for young Asian American kids. I feel they would most likely do a great family friendly content for Asian Americans especially if they bring certain issues that Asian Americans can relate and help them how to go through them in family friendly way. With relatable and lovable characters!

It became a joke because Hollywood started to cast the originally white characters with POC actors instead of creating original characters who are actually Asian/black/Latino/biracial.
I don't want to see a Marvel character from Asgard played by a Japanese man (no smoke towards Asano Tadanobu though). I want to see more of Ally Wong and Steven Yeun's characters from Beef.

I agree with what Andrew said. Us Asians have been in America for over a hundred years, and we have been misrepresented for so long, we still find racial stereotypes hurtful and harmful. And now, we finally get some positive representation and we feel like we finally have a voice and can maybe even get some political power. And it is also true that Asian American exist in great numbers in White society and White careers, more so than probably every other ethnic minority.
When you have been fighting for media represenatation for as long as we have, you just feel like the struggle is never-ending. For a minority group that just got here, within 1 or 2 generations, it's not the same. They haven't been struggling for over a hundred years. So, they probably aren't thinking about represenation as much, because they, honestly, have much less power and control than we do.
We can actually see the bamboo ceiling and we are trying to break through it. Some other minority groups can't even see their ceiling, because it's so far away.

All you want is to wallow in white supremacist 💩 Blacks don't do anything as a people to hurt you. If not for the work that Blacks do/ did they would still restrict your immigration. They give you all grants to open business in our neighborhood, but won't even do that for the people who live there, some of who even fought in these wars that gives you the freedom to come over and step on us. And you're always claiming that Black people are the reason you can't get this or you can't get that... You claim you can't get into college because of Black people while Blacks are struggling for themselves and you're afraid to speak up about the legacy admisssions and never question the whites who may or may not have lower scores than you. We're tired of you all coming for us when we haven't come for you. We also stood with and for you during WWII when they were rounding you up and putting you in concentration camps. We stood for you when they nuked y'all twice only to watch the majority and uneducated among you to come here and spit right in our faces. Last week an Asian lady cut me off in a jammed up Costco parking lot after letting all the white folks through. As soon as she saw I was Black she pulled up and even blocked the intersection. I went to NIU for college in the 2000s where only 2% populations were Asians. Not exaggerating but I’ve been asked so many times by acquaintances if I eat lot of rice, if know kungfu, or if I’m related to Bruce Lee (my last name is Lee and they said that I look like him). That’s how media represented us back then. Today’s representation of Asia is much better than before and it boosted our status a little. So yeah, the media representation matters because that’s where the majority people get their information from.

I also wanna add that Asian media representation has been minimal throughout US history because Asians often don't prioritize becoming famous and their parents have other plans for them (i.e. becoming a doctor, etc.), hence not much representation since people who are in charge of representation are people in Hollywood like actors, writers, etc.

  • @Razear
    @Razear 10 місяців тому +6

Hollywood has gradually been granting multifaceted roles to ethnic or other visible minority groups, but Asians typically don't speak up about their personal grievances outside of online communities. It's one thing for aspiring Asian actors to voice their displeasure IRL vs a bunch of angry redditors screaming into the void. This is also more of an American phenomenon. East Asians who consume their homeland's media won't be preoccupied with this.

  • @Teleios15013

A lot of Asians don’t have a strong identity, knowledge, and pride in their backgrounds instilled into them by their parents and elders. We are only told to study and keep quiet and be good and try to fit in with white culture so we can get good jobs and make money. This results in us craving to fit in with western society but western society will never accept Asians and continually spits on us with their media and misrepresents us. This in turn creates a constant longing and frustration and demand for fair and accurate portrayal.
If us Asians were raised in a way where we had more understanding of our history, culture, and to have more pride in our background as well as understand the insidiousness of white western society we’d probably give less fks about how we are portrayed on tv

True man, and I honestly think this is where Asian parents need to step up and teach their kids cultural pride or they're going to grow up feeling lost in the world. My mom is 1st generation Chinese Canadian who taught me and my sisters about how our great-grandfather came to Canada and helped build the railway then dealt with the Chinese head tax. However my dad is a Malaysian Chinese immigrant who is involved with teaching dancing to the Chinese community in Montreal with my Taiwanese stepmother who is a dance teacher. I took it up a notch by going to a Chinese church and even went and helped out with a worship group to a Chinese nursing home. I also know how to talk to my elders since I learned a bit of Cantonese to learn more about my heritage. I think this is what everyone needs to know how to do and at the end of the day, you cannot change your race so why not embrace it.

The comparison with Bangladeshis and Hispanics is interesting, but I think it's also useful to compare Asians with the groups that have complained a lot about representation: white women and blacks.
The other thing is that media representation may be a reflection of real life, but the degree to which it shapes people's perceptions is also important. Like, part of the reason Asian men are under represented is because the only Asians that creatives interact with are their Asian girlfriends and gay Asians, but this still has an influence over the way that Asian men are perceived.

A reason that I could probably deduce why this may be occurring is that they’re very proud and care a lot about their medias that cater for them like anime and manga or kdramas etc, or their cultures as well, that they may be tad angst about foreign changes or bend their medias to “global audience” aka censorship based on cultural differences. Which has been targeted for a while from twitter and the dark ages of being a weeb or gamer during the 2000’s and 1980-1990s bullying and now they are like “oh long time no see, we’ve been friends sene ever, hey by the way how about you change something because I don’t like your thing”

I agree that Asians regard themselves as "white adjacent" and therefore expect the same representation. However, you guys keep referring to Asians as the only minority wanting this and it is not entirely accurate. African Americans are heavily represented in the media and in fact the Hip Hop genre has already supplanted the lily white America as the "cool American culture" in music, movies and even the Black American speak in everyday lives.
So why is it that Black America far more representative in media than Asian characters - especially male characters in leading positions. I think the reason is that there is still a widely regarded myth that Asian American male characters are not viewed as "sexy", "cool", macho" etc. Even White characters in leading positions can't be too "white", they have to be tatted, speak Black American lingo and are heavily muscled (witness transformation of Jake Gyllenhaal) and even weed freindly And when a Asian male character is put in a lead role, they often go to mixed raced Asians who have a hint of Western "handsome" in them. OTOH, Asian women are viewed positively for reasons much discussed in this forum and others
This sort of thing is taken as an affrontery to Asian males and to a lesser degree Asian feamales and that is the main reason. To that, I say, as a East Asian male, f*ck this and just be yourself. Don't try to "fit in" to this new American "cool" culture. It does not fit in East Asian culture and it should not be be seen as the gold standard. Be confident in your own abilities and do things in society that contribute - be it entrepreneurship, being the best damn employee in any discipline you are in, being active in charitable activities, chill out in ways that you enjoy and living upright lives in the Confucian tradition and treat all people well. Speak up and lead and be active politically and don't take a back seat to anyone. And learn martial arts.😀

It feels like all y'all are piggybacking off the work black people have been doing for a hundred years plus. However I think the reason it feels like that to me might be because Asian, latin American etc have had these discussions internally for years and its only hitting the non entertainment industry community because of the internet. Too many groups keep their inter community conversations internal and need to share them more otherwise it's gonna look like they only started fighting for representation after it got trendy.

I understand wanting to be properly represented in media, but it's just not comparable to Black Americans. Asians and all these other recent groups who all of a sudden want a piece of the "American" pie, have their own media they can always go back to from their own countries. Remember, the U.S is our (Black Americans) home turf and we've had the biggest cultural influences by far. Our issue is that White people own these massive corporations and like to represent us in a negative spotlight. We've been fighting since day 1 and still have to because a lot of things still haven't changed. Trust me, if we could have our own media that our people controlled, we wouldn't care so much and Hollywood wouldn't be as successful. Too many people have false dreams about Hollywood, but if I was an Asian American, I'd stick with influencing my own country's media

More Asian representation in Western nations means get ignored less by western media when bad things happened to Asians in Western nations.
Western born Asians cared a lot more about representation than Asians born Asians who just live in western nations. Why? For many reasons such as getting less racism and more opportunities if gets accepted by the white social structure. Some goes to the extreme to get accepted by this structure and start badmouthing Asians who rather hold on to their original ethnic identity instead of melding in with Western social structures.
Thus two school thoughts, Western Melting Pot or the failure of the western Melting Pot, emerged between this struggle for identity of Gen1 and 2 immigrants.
Rise of Asia certainly didn't help the Western Melting Pot any.
