Way to go Mr Allen. This drill saved my game . I tried pretty much every drill from youtube to cure the shanks with no success. I was about to quit golf, it was too painful, I shank the ball at least 10 times per round. then I saw your drill in this video and just for the hell of it I gave it a try. This drill is amazing. it was unbelievable to me how well I was hitting the ball just 10 minutes after trying the drill. I will be forever grateful.
Thanks a million
Great video! I'm a 2 handicap and the shanks show up every now and then out of nowhere! I've never really knew exactly why its happening and this video cleared all that up for me, big thanks Zach!
Wow, just had a break through tonight... I have struggled with shanking for years. Whenever they come on, I use impact tape and monitor things closely. I have read every shanking tip under the sun. For me, most fail to solve the root problem. For whatever reason, while hitting balls earlier tonight, I focused on keeping my elbows pinched together and facing my hips and keep them close together throughout the swing and what do you know... Impact dead center of the club face time and time again. This came after hitting hosel rockets 50% of the time. This setup tip is exactly what Hogans 5 Lessons talks about. However, I have never seen this communicated as a tip for curing the shank. I don't post much but felt compelled to relay this. We will see if this lasts the test of time but I am very optimistic.
Mr. Allen, thank you for the most enlightening golf instructional video I've come across. I watched your video twice, and then hit the range. I tried the drill (successfully) for about 15 shots and then gave it a go with standard shots, while keeping in mind the techniques described, notably keeping hands in front of the body on takeaway. I can say with confidence this is the best I've ever hit at any range session. I'm looking forward to continuing to practice these techniques and dropping my score dramatically.
Mr. Allen - great video...I had the sha...... in a warm-up golf-round before an annual tournament and I was completely panic stricken. I had experienced this about 10 years ago and I went through almost an entire summer with the disease. I almost gave up the game. I was disease free for about 10 years up until this week - right before a tournament. Your video is short, succinct and addresses all the flaws in an individuals swing associated with that dreaded shot. Great job and great video. Thanks.
Hi Zach - I wanted to drop you a note of thanks. Once upon a time I played off near 10. Over the last year I developed the sh**ks which became very regular, destroying my confidence and getting me down in general and I'd gone up to shooting mid-high 90s. But this video coupled to the stop coming over the top has been a revelation. I'm hitting it like a dream now and better than ever!! I'm now aiming to break 80 for first time ever within weeks! Sincerest thanks, Adam
Super video, FINALLY someone explained to me why!!!...I am the first guy, I was moving forward towards the ball and hitting it off the hosel...Thank you so much!!!
Excellent drill! This really got me back to hitting solid golf shots. Thanks!
Thank you Zach. I went to the range and gave this drill a chance, and 5 swings later I was back on track. Thank you!
Thanks for the video - will try the two ball drill on the range soon.
This technique worked for me immediately. I can't thank you enough as this has been affecting me for a few weeks an even a lesson with the pro couldn't fix it. I'll be sure to pass this video on to others.
Been there! It was 3 months of absolute agony and torment when it came to golf. So embarrassing coming over the top like this seems to be the reason and this video helped so much thank you! Every once and a while the thought creeps into my head when I have a big wedge shop but I just remember hit from inside
This video could possibly change my golf career! Thanks
great clip! I love your stuff!!! I am a golf instructor and am totally shocked that 10 people hit the thumbs down>??? They really have no clue because this is a GREAT video!
Great lesson zach. Thanks
Zach - nice job - you ARE the man !
great video Z like every time. a good footwork is esential you're right. thanks a lot. rico
Great tips, thanks.
Always enjoy your content, Zach! And your ball strike blueprint is really helpful! Question: After this drill, how do you address the ball in game? Will it mess up the normal routine?
Muy bueno!!Thanks.
Super presentation!
I was hitting my irons near the hosel , with some real solid 45 degree shanks. I went to a par 3 course today and did this drill using an imaginary ball on the outside of my ball. I was flushing every shot! That had to be the best tip to stop the shanks that I have ever had!!! Thanks!
Nice explaining
Great video like always Zach. Really enjoyed it and keep them coming! I had a case of the "shanks" for a week and I stopped it by standing further away from the ball. Do you think this is a quick fix? I will also try this drill on the range. Thanks!
Really nice video
That is awesome info
Awesome video
I just started to shank today after playing 10 years with very few issues with my irons. I have been working only on my driver and fairway wood at the range for the past month and just started shanking my irons. I think it's because my swing has grown too accustomed to the longer shaft of the driver and I've transferred that motion to my irons. Great video, I'll try it tomorrow.
Zach this was fantastic. Not only did it cure my shanks but it lowered my trajectory on part wedges which is exactly what I was trying to do but couldn't. My only question is the best way to go from the two ball drill to one ball?
This drill is a miracle, you gotta try this! didn't fix my shank immediately, but after 1-2 days, it is now all but gone. I did hit some hooks, but it was an easy fix :). Thank you Mr. Allen!
awesome..ty
I have notice a couple of common faults with shakers, which I tend to do when my golf game is going well and I start getting over confident.
1. Shankers tend to be too upright with their posture
2. Shankers back leg, the knee tend to cross the centerline causing the body to tilt away from the ball
3. Shankers hands tend to stay away from the body instead of that out to in swing
I hate shanking it comes out of no where.
I caught the shanks 30 minutes before tournament while i was on the range. Talk about freaking out!!! Am still trying to get rid of them . Its painful to watch.
planetGoRilla1 been there. It was 3 months of torment!! This was a video that helped eliminate it as well as butch harmon has a video.
ZACH awesome drill my shank is gone and getting pure iron strikes.when i do the drill how do i transition this drill into one ball?should i just keep practicing this drill ? thank you.
That really is a great drill.
This worked very well. For one practice session. Then I went back to shanking my chips again. It really is THE most frustrating fault in the game. Nothing seems to fix it, and it saps confidence in every shot, so you keep doing it.
tomi hunter not sure what you mean. I'm following the drill as shown to the letter. How can I be too close when I'm already addressing the furthest ball.
I used to never shank and out of no where my wedges kept shanking. Every drive I would 100-120 out and shank. I'm a 12 handicap it's driving me nuts 🥜
Always seem to start with the wedges doesn't it?...crazy.
Thanks. Until watching this video I was convinced I was hitting the toe of the club with an open clubface. Attempts to correct the problem often made it worse.
It's been about 3 week of shanking hell for me LOL. I'm standing so far away from the ball its unreal and I'm still shanking it. I'm looking forward to trying this drill on the range tomorrow.
How many shanks did Webb Simpson hit when he won the usopen?
thanks
Zach, had the shanks (type 1 in your video). Knew why I was shanking it, but didn't know how to fix it. Tried your drill and I'm cured (for now)! Question - after hitting a bucket of balls with the 2 ball drill, i tried hitting one ball. however, i addressed the ball toward the hosel to mimic the two ball drill. was hitting it pure. Should I make this a part of my normal pre-shot routine?
Hi, sorry I am a few years late, but how did you end up transitioning the 2 ball drill? did you address the ball towards the hosel or just hit normally?
the problem arises from trying to hit the ball too hard, not relaxing the muscles in the arms hands and shoulders, and not using impact tape.
Great explanation. Normally I hit the ball pretty good. But sometimes I get in a shank mode at the range very demoralizing
8 Hdcp I've started shanking my wedges, I'm starting to really kinda sorta freaking out.
Dude I started golfing a lot 5 years ago. When I was 25.
Started out shooting 100-110. Watching a bunch of vids and reading. Going to the range a lot and playing. I normally play 125-135 sloped courses.
Last year I started shooting in the 80’s consistently. Went into this year and said if I don’t break 80 I’m gonna quit. I finally broke 80 a couple weeks ago. Should have broke 80 the next round also.
But I just developed the shanks for the first time in 5 years this past week. I really feel like crying. It’s that painful. 5 years of improvement down the drain.
This is golf depression. I got the shanks out of nowhere after having the best round of my life. Shot 78. I normally shoot anywhere between 85-105 but generally in the mid 90s. Shooting a 78 I felt amazing. I was striking the ball so fucking well and to a fault on some shots. By that I mean hitting the ball further with clubs that I normally do not hit that far but I had been practicing a lot this summer between rounds. Two
Holes I double bogeyed because I hit my club much further than I thought I could. Over pured the shot. But anyways a couple days later I went back to the same course because I was anxious to play again. I probably shot a 115 at least. I stopped keeping score. It could have been 130 to be honest. I went to the range. And kept shanking. Started to hit some nice shots. But kept shanking. I am so rattled right now. It's incredibly frustrating. I felt like crying for the first time in so many years. When I started golfing a couple years ago I sucked obviously. Shot 105-110. But kept going to range and practicing. Shooting a 78 felt amazing after all the practice. Now it feels like I don't know anything about the golf swing anymore. After reading so many books. Watching so many videos. I feel like I am
Back to knowing nothing.
I hear ya, exactly the way my game has gone, i was playing the best golf of my life, then wham,,, it all went, the more i tried to correct it the worse it got, my head was full of nothing but shanks, its the devil, people who don`t get them have no idea how you feel, i played again the next day and the first 9 i was hitting some lovely shots, then once again out of the blue came a shank and that was it from then on, we will get there tipsy, we gotta just keep trying, good luck we got this!
Can the 2-ball drill be done with a driver?
Shank you very much, i use this on every range session.
i'm a pro and that was definitely a "half-shank" sometimes it happens when the ball is lying in an awkward place such as the case here where it is about a foot above him...but our shanks are nowhere as bad as a hacker shank definitely feels like it clips the hosel though
You're right. This is a great video! I think it was Hunter Mahan who hit thumbs down 10 times. haha
I am plagued by this on and off. it was so bad I would try to completely miss the ball on purpose and end up puring it. I'm going through it right now. I just got off the range and want to break every one of my clubs against a concrete pole
My left ear enjoyed that :)
I never shanked a ball once in my life until I was about 28 years old. Won tournaments in high school, was close to a scratch golfer ever since I was 16... and just recently I've started shanking fairly regularly. It is infuriating, and so hard to get rid of.
+ChosenBrad1322 What worked for me when I got them was I tried to go as far inside as I could on my backswing and then purposely tried to hit the ball to the right. I was hitting it straight though which is expected. Once I started hitting the ball right, pushing it, I then went back to normal backswing and shank free. Only took about 10 hits.
C'mon!!! whats a good round of golf without a shank?!?! lol.
Seriously, though, great vid and explanation! thanks for posting!
Big Mahalo
I think that shanking the ball is just caused by rushing, if I take my time, stand over the ball and relax it never happens, it's ust when I'm with other players and it's my turn that it happens, and I think that, I'm trying to get out of the way, so that other players can play.
early extension is a major cause of shanks
Ok People this is all blah blah blah whatever
Here is really why you shank:
The club is L shaped at address meaning the sweet spot is over half an inch outside the handle
When you properly swing THROUGH the ball the weight of the club toe bends the (correctly flexed to your good swing) shaft downwards forming a straight line... or not necessarily exactly straight but at least a FAMILIAR line to the grip handle for your grooved confident swing. So the feeling is almost like you are hitting the ball just with a shaft with a centred weight at the bottom of it on a good shot.
The reason a shank occurs is you don't confidently swing THROUGH a shot, so the downward shaft flex is snapped outward due to lack of centrifugal force v's the shaft flex strength, therefore the shaft meets the ball in a straight position (presenting the heel) because your trained equilibrium has allowed for the downward bend it's used feeling centralizing the sweet spot to your hands.
The fix = pretend the club is just a shaft and swing hard through as if trying to shank but also confidently thinking the harder you swing through the more the shaft downward bend will present the sweet spot.
You'll never shank again (unless you slow the club early again), if in the event the harder you swing the ball goes high right the shaft bend has presented the face beyond parallel (toe down) so the loft sends the ball right instead of straight up, get stiffer shafts.
If the ball goes left off the face - swing through more you are quitting too early, the ball should never start left even with too stiff shafts if the sole lies correct at address as force always pushes the toe down therefore loft right. Softer shafts can add distance for slower swings though provided the release doesn't fully straighten the shaft before impact or the shank will be back
You're welcome .
My left ear is pleased.

great drill even if you're not shanking
There isn't any part of the club I can't shank. all parts are equal opportunity shank
Claude Harmon said that shanks usually occur when amateurs try to block a pull, if that makes sense.
Are you shanking? Check you weight. The weight to the toes is a big issue, keep you weight on your heels, when at the range, it will help.
The shank has forced me to quit the game. I can't fix it no matter what I do. One day I can hit without but it comes back with a vengance. It has driven me crazy.
+Ken .Doncaster Try this. Go as far inside as you can on your backswing and try to purposely hit the ball to the right. I bet you it will go straight. Continue doing this for at least 20-30 swings. Then do your normal swing, let me know if it works. This worked for me when I got them and it took 10 swings to be shank free.
Emphathemia
Golfers, NEVER WEAR JEANS to the golf course
The 3rd guy may be able to lose his shanks if he loses those jeans...joking but not really lol
Too many examples. Confusing.
lol. just come down more inside, closer to your body my man
+croplaya Thanks. I ´ll follow your advise. Best regards.
+croplaya YOU SHOULD BE A GOLF TEACHER. I AM NOT SHANKING!!!!!!!
😂😂😂😂😂 worst golf shots and swings ever. Glad I clicked on the shank video.
why amateurs shank? They are too lazy to practice and they have no hand eye coordination. Some peeps just shouldn't play golf...
A shank is a shank.........pros and amateurs shank the ball. Why do pros shank in your mind?
Because you're a pro...
I'm sorry... this video is too painful to continue to watch.
