Waking up with only a couple dollars in my bank account, done that.
Gone to sleep as one of the richest people in the country, still waiting on that.

One of my Grandmother’s best friends was Mrs. Doheney’s senior French maid. I recall as a very young child going to the mansion to visit her. When the friend retired, Mrs. Doheney gave her four sherbet dishes from the vast silver set that she received on her marriage. These treasures are now mine.

So glad this grand house has been preserved instead of turned into parking lot, like so many other grand mansions in SoCal.

I liked everything about this house. I am surprised that they used curtains instead of pocket or french doors to separate rooms. Strange. It's amazing that the house still stands. Wonder what it looks like now.

Actually you are wrong about that. I was in the house, once, and I noticed the huge, solid, beautifully made pocket doors as I passed from one large room to another. I just walked in and the people were very friendly and welcoming. It was being used as a college administration building, at that time. It is part of what was Los Angeles' first gated community.

I loved the breakfast room. Such small, intimate rooms for family breakfasts were usually bright, cheerful, with good views of the grounds. Many families also used them for afternoon tea with a family member when not entertaining, or even a casual supper. Once the staff served the tea tray, they disappeared for very private family - or "madame's" - personal time. Very cozy in a grand home. Dining rooms were very formal, usually only for entertaining, which of course was frequent and lavish. And libraries are always my favorite rooms in any house. Nice that he had a second library, a rare book room for his treasures. Crazily eclectic exterior design, but interiors were surprisingly lovely.

That house and surrounding properties was turned into Mount Saint Mary's University, a private university dedicated to under-privileged women (I believe it is co-ed now). USC's main library has the Doheny name, dedicated to one of his sons who died in WWI, while in the US Army. I'm sure there is more of the Doheny generosity that I'm not aware of.

Very opulent home. The plaster was incredible with the design continuing from the walls to the ceiling. And two libraries. I found the home to be comfortable. I really liked the kitchen! And the landscaped grounds were beautiful. I’m with the person who commented the desire to walk up the driveway. I hope the home still exists and is preserved. I also felt the clip went too quickly through the rooms. I wanted to stay awhile longer and soak all the details in 😊😊
