My wife was a music major at Mount Saint Mary’s and I spent dozens of lazy afternoons strolling the grounds and visiting the music rooms. Truly, one of the most beautiful spots in LA
mikekenney1947 Sister Eileen Marie? He introduced her as a Catholic nun. No way does she look like a Catholic nun. So something is wrong. She is not wearing a habit or anything
I remember Sister Eileen Marie. She taught history to me in one of the living rooms in the big houses. We had classrooms in bedrooms and living rooms. At that time in 1965 thru 1967 it was an all girls school. Wonderful memories😇
My family lived very near this mansion in late 1940’s Thur the 1950’s (on Hope Street), in a big house my grandmother owned. Sadly house was demolished to make way for DMV parking lot. My mother would walk me to 1st grade (1954) at St Vincent’s Church/ school. The neighborhood was so charming, Exposition Park, the museum all right there. This is why I LOVE L.A!
I graduated from this campus in 1967 With Cardinal Mc Intyre presiding over the ceremony. Four freshman including me snuck into the Doheny Mansion at midnight. It was a convent at that time. The Mansion was of course off limits. I have many wonderful memories of this beautiful campus and of the Sisters of St Joseph of Carondelet.
I am a little younger than you, I think, but I remember the days before electronic surveillance was everywhere. I have fond memories of sneaking into places when all you had to do was tell a security guard a good story, carry a clipboard, and sign in with a false I.D. If no one was around, and it was late at night, you simply opened an unlocked window or scaled a fence. My friends and I were on a mission to sneak into as many off-limits swimming pools as we could. We'd climb a fence or, in the case of the Women's Club on Durant Ave., open a sub basement window. We'd quickly strip off, swim a couple of laps, jump out, towel off, get dressed, and be gone in the night. It took about 20 minutes. The teenagers manning the desk at the Claremont Swim Club could've cared less, as long as you signed in and your "membership" number had the correct number of digits in it. I once signed in as Nancy Reagan and felt a little paranoid, but I needn't have worried. The kiddos were too stoned to notice and no one ever double checked the names on the sign-in sheets. The ultimate score would've been the two pools at Hearst Castle, but those were too inaccessible and too well guarded. As a 7 year old, I did manage to swim in every pool of every big hotel on the original Las Vegas strip in 1955: The Last Frontier, the Dunes, Sahara, Sands, Flamingo, Desert Inn, and maybe one or two more, but my parents were complicit.
I've been lucky to work in this mansions for the last 24 years... I got to know most of the CSJ sisters and Sr. Eileen Marie was one of them. Now is Mount St. Mary's University
A lot of times I'll find a Huell that at first appears to be about a subject I have no interest in turns out to be very interesting. Such as this one. Huell brings out the human-interest angle very well and you end up wanting to find out more about the place or subject. That was his knack.
You could probably never build this house with all the nice wood and windows because of the Materials in man building it to the talents of it very nice house amazing
Wisdom here.......dont miss this.......or miss LIFE itself......this wise woman of God has many lessons to teach us if we are LISTENING.........are WE LISTENING folk??????? Lets Read........and THINK........YES Let us begin to THINK again............WE are Misssing the mark ladies and gentlemen of the Human Arena.......?
The Dohenys were so unkind & stingy in their servants' bedroom accomodations. 3-4 servants slept in a tiny room on very narrow beds. There was just room for the beds and maybe one small dresser in each room. I was appalled.
Huell was so impressed with California, he could hardly contain his enthusiasm. He was born in Tennessee and when he got his first look at California, I imagine he was hooked. I LOVE his down home southern charm. I am a native of this area and as such I can relate. So much to see and explore.
This guy needs to be told that you don’t touch a nun who’s in her habit without her permission. At 17:05 and 20:00 and he paws her a couple of times at the end.
BYU is under no obligation to allow all speech. It's a private school. It's also why I wouldn't go to that school, and why they wouldn't want me there.
ShakespeareCafe It must be great that you’re able to divine what the professor based her decision on to not award an A-minus. No mention was made in this video of the student’s attendance, class participation, timeliness in completing assignments, subject mastery et alii. Just pettiness.
I love the way Huell takes charge in such a charming way, wandering around with his host trailing...

Educated by Carondelet nuns for 8 years. Champion women, one and all.

God bless you Sister! That was one painful interview but you pushed through it. 😇🙏😇

Wow, so much history.😍 Wow and extraordinary, wealth, and beauty. Wow that is really, really rich. This is such an awesome video.

IZt was also a filming location as I worked on a show in 1 of those buildings about 14 years ago.
Damn! This looks like the house from our script!
I sure miss Huell rip
Architecture- hints of Richardson Romanesque and prairie style
Mount St. Mary's is still doing tours as of 8/2024. Books: The Doheny Mansion by MaryAnn Bonino; Los Angele's Chester Place by Don Sloper.
YOU SHOULD BE WEARING THE HABIT!
Dear PBS--"city's," not "cities," please, in the description!

The ballroom, the smoking room, the salon or parlor. The kitchen, the storage rooms, the children rooms up on 3rd floor. Grandure homes.
Very interesting.
The guy keeps cutting her off!
It kind of bothers me that dude keeps interrupting her.
Oh my i was just thinking outire etc ... I grew up w both nun styles! 😢😊

Miss Huel
Teachers do not ‘give’ A’s; students either earn an A, or they do not.
Anyone know what year this was made?

@@vickiladu6755 I mean the film itself. Huell Howser died in 2013.
From what I can gather based on the episode, it was made in 2000.
The Dohenys were so unkind & stingy in their servants' bedroom accomodations. 3-4 servants slept in a tiny room on very narrow beds. There was just room for the beds and maybe one small dresser in each room.
I was appalled.
I don't think he does it on purpose, but he keeps on interrupting her!

Yeah. and who's show is it?
He has to keep the program to a timeline.
A drinking game; Take a drink every time Huell says "Oh me gosh". . . .S M H . . . .
Doheny's 2nd wife died in 1935... just how old is the nun that Huell spoke to about Mrs. Doheny?
It was Edward L. Dohney that passed away in 1935. His second wife passed away in 1958.
Daniel Plainviews house.

I notice how close he was to the student's breast in the opening scene as he was talking and moving his hands.
Amy, he was a known active Homosexual... he probably didn't mean any harm
Hes a country boy and gay
Perhaps I’m wrong, but I don’t believe he ever openly acknowledged if he was gay. If he was, he was private about it.

Huell howser was a badass mofo.
Pretty petty of the professor to cheat her student out of an A 89.5 % = A-

Make him shut up, please !!!🙄
Sincerelyyoursable ikr? Loud too.
That's Huell Howser. He has passed away, but in is own style, he brought a lot of Ca. most interesting sites. He was on PBS.
