Just a heads up everyone saying that he uses "pretrained " dogs for these videos ... I have a 6 month old Catahoula who is the BIGGEST puller. After just 2 days of doing leash tension drills, and turning with him on an empty road in the middle of nowhere, he is already starting to walk at a relaxed heel for me. We're talking about less than an hour of training here and he is already getting it. Next step will be sticking him to my left leg with the third drill he gives us. So far, this has been the most helpful video I have found on UA-cam when it comes to my puppy pulling. The only thing I have done differently, is brought a bunch of treats with me, and the second he does what I want him to do, he gets rewarded. With every turn, every time he's by my side and relaxed, he gets a treat. Thanks so much for this video man. It's changing my relationship with my dog.
@@maryhandlename I posted this over a year ago. I was not using a flat collar. I was using a starmark training collar. I can now walk in with a flat collar without pulling, and I occasionally use a herm sprenger
I think so many of you are loosing the whole point o this video. I don’t think he could show you those maneuvers on an untrained dog in such a short time. You have to be able to use your brain and work out how to use the suggestions with your own dog. This video provided a shit ton ton of instruction in a short time. To get solid instruction like this is priceless. Look past the sound quality, he is just trying to help people and not be all fancy an flashy. Ge off your high horse and be thankful he is willing to share this with everyone for free!
I've watched this several times. It pays to return to it after you've practiced and you might discover that you've altered or forgotten or never noted, and so learned some more detail and then you realize the importance of what you overlooked or forgot.
Damn! The best training advice I've ever heard, no joke! Noticable difference within 2 days. My dog would almost choke himself out but now he listens. Thank you!
I've had my 10 month old rescue dog for 3 days. He was pulling like crazy the first two days. I did this exercise this morning, and he was like a whole new dog on our afternoon and evening walks! He was staying to one side and looking at me for direction. I hope he keeps this up!
Thank you for this!! I’ve struggled so hard with my dogs that I thought I had to pay $400 to get him professional training. This has literally fixed my dog’s behaviors in a matter of 15 minutes!
A good structured walk is the best training tool available to all dog owners. Unfortunately so many can’t take their dog on an enjoyable walk because of excessive pulling on the leash. Here are a few very basic things that any dog owner can start working on to teach their dog to walk nicely on a loose leas Watch me begin to train this dog 3 months ago: ua-cam.com/video/6t2A6D7Dc0I/v-deo.html Emmy the Great Dane / Overcoming fear: ua-cam.com/video/hwAjloICWyI/v-deo.html
We just rescued a 12 lb maltese mix, who is pretty calm in general, but doesn't walk well on a leash. I walk using a walker, or use a wheelchair if going very far, and between my hands being busy helping me "walk" and her being only 10" off the ground, I am finding the straight leash pull a difficult task. Any suggestions? Her walking well on a leash is essential for both of our safety, and I really want to take her out with me! Thanks!
Shari Czerwinski Awe that’s awesome to hear you rescued her & by now I pray you feel she’s rescued you. ❤️ I also hope you have gotten help with this by now & pray you two are loving 🥰 life together.
Best video I have seen on loose leash walking and I have scoured the internet watching tons and tons of them. I learned 3 new things that NONE of the other ones ever explained to the point that you did. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Trainers always use a dog with perfect leash manners as an example. This isn't a criticism, but I wish just one trainer would take a raw dog, with no leash manners whatsoever, and show the transformation.
pt8648 t Zak George does this all the time. He always has untrained (at least for whatever he is training, especially for tricks) dogs in his videos. And he doesn’t use harsh methods like this man does.
Pretty much the best video I've seen on dog training. Brief, but covers all the important points. Nice. To all those commenting on wishing to see an unruly dog, the concept is exactly as he showed in the video. The dog got to that level by doing what he SHOWS in the video. And training a dog takes time. It's not an overnight or 10 minute process. I think the underlying reason for those comments is people expecting instant gratification with dog training, saying to themselves, "I've been trying it for a few days, how come it's not working?" Commit long-term and stick with the shown training methods. I figured out the turning left thing while training my dog except I swing on my right foot and bring my left leg back. My dog watches and "chases" my left leg and comes to a heel position when I turn. The stuff shown here work, period.
Thank you for breaking down the training methods. I would also love to see an untrained dog that is not food or toy motivated as an example, but this is still an extremely helpful video because you’ve broken down the individual training exercises that lead to a heel! Greatly appreciated!
If anyone complaining this is a well trained dog bothers to look through his videos, you can find plenty of examples of ill mannered dogs he's working with on leashes. I believe this video was more to be able to demonstrate to the owner/handler the proper execution of the steps. You have to train the trainer first. Everyone wants an insta-answer without putting in any of the work. Larry, you have the patience of a saint even more so with people than dogs. Everyone is an armchair dog trainer, but I have yet to see others put the rubber to the road and post their own videos to share their amazing training process....for free!
For all the people complaining about the dog already having had training. This video isn't for amusement or to prove to you that his techniques work. If you've seen his other videos you know that they do. He isn't going to use a stubborn, ignorant dog and try to demonstrate 6 different training techniques, that would be pretty stupid. I don't know what people think.....these techniques are not something you do for 15 minutes and your done. Some things can take days, weeks, or months to achieve and you have to be consistent. Some things are taught easier than others depending on the breed and temperament.
Changing directions when leash training has worked for me 100% of the time. The most stubborn dog I ever trained (a 2yr old Rhodesian Ridgeback) took less than 10 minutes to completely break pulling behavior. No speaking correction required, but I do give verbal rewards. Never used a prong or e-collar. This is an awesome video and will work as long as you expect it to. Definitely subbing!
thank you for posting this , I have been struggling to get my dog to walk on a loose leash despite obedience classes and its good to see some different methods that help break it down. i have needed a different approach to use with him - and we are practicing in our driveway and onto the roadway late at night since its a blazing hot summer here in Aus right now. My neighbours think i've lost the plot goosestepping up and down the road but i'm happy to do this if it works. thanks again . Your doberman is beautiful and prances like a dressage horse xxxx - just gorgeous
Omg yes ! I can honestly say this is working! Consistently is key, so whenever my puppy starts pulling I do this each and every time. My neighbors are impressed with my 10 month old puppy’s progress since we got him last September. Tried many methods, harnesses, etc. Working with a trainer that follows your methods as well, so it’s a win/win. Thank you!
That's a very well bred dog!! Thank you for this video, I see lots of complaints about how the viewers want raw material but right from the start you say that you don't really have this problem and it's just part of the process if training is done correctly. I cannot wait to get started!
Larry, please don't ever stop dog training!! You are my one stop shop and you are super intelligent when it comes to these animals!!!! Thank you for this video, also; our dogs are cray cray on the leash😫 I'm making a mental note of this information!! 🐕🐾
I have a similar problem with a 5 month old puppy!!! I certainly agree with and understand the process Larry is teaching for a "structured dog walk", but I confess, I am having problems knowing what and how to correct a puppy whose attention span is short and she can go from "model dog on a walk" to "the tasmanian devil at the end of a leash" within 1 second. Larry, please help!!!!!!!!!
This was a wonderful video. I’ve only had my soon to be 4 year old Mini Aussie for about a year now. She wasn’t trained at all. She is now house broken, sits either verbally or hand signals. She will lay down or jump up for treats. She loses all focus if people are around or other animals. Ugh I haven’t been able to have a walk with her like you just showed us because she is either sniffing marking pooping whatever. I’m disabled and realize it’s my fault for not being consistent but I’m just now finding videos here yay! She has never bit anyone but acts like she will tear them up! I worry that she will though. So, I don’t risk it but it limits the activities that I could with her out of fear. So I’m hoping/ praying that these videos will help me help her. She is my world and has big a big part of helping me regain strength and I’ve lost 90lbs. So far, after having her given to me. I am also her 3rd. And last home! She is very smart and I needed help learning how to teach my sweet baby girl to interact with me. I give her tons of love but I see she loves it in the working mode. I’ve taught her “go around ” and her little eyes fixate on me and her head is up and back long gated prancing. OMGosh She’s beautiful Sorry bout that hehe Anyway Thank You 🙏
Exactly! Try a dog with 0% eye contact & absolutely no obedience on a leash & is pulling you so hard that you are left with blisters on your hand then maybe I'll believe 😣
Rainbow Cloud with a out of control dog to stop pulling is so easy......#1 prong collar on #2 start walking #3 let dog get out in front of you about 3 feet. #4 do a turn about 180 degrees Simultaneously with a strong leash pop. After about 2-3 times no more pulling. I Guaranteed he used this technique before turning on the camera. Nothing wrong with this technique but I agree don’t make it complicated for dog owners just because you don’t want sound like you’re using negative reinforcement.
Awesome video with great tips!!! Thank you!!! I had 2 huge Rhodesian Ridgebacks that we’re such gentlemen because I did this kind of training with them everyday!! They were happy, relaxed, confident, well mannered, gentle, aware of their surroundings, and fun to be around!! And because I put in the time to do those simple exercises before play, while playing, or after play, it felt like a fun thing to do together as a team!! I could trust them in any situation and could be relaxed, happy, confident, etc...at all times!! They were such a joy to be around!! I miss those boys everyday... Can’t wait to share my life with one of those wonderful creatures once again!!!
Thanks from Sweden. You have given me an aha moment. The small small steps you take and reward are new to me. I have attended a lot of dog training courses over the years. In now understand that they all have been pushing to hard and to fast. I know the theory but it's the details that makes the difference. Nice to see a real professional work, best I ever seen.
These techniques have been instrumental for my 2x 10 month old red heelers. I've noticed vast improvements in just our first week of application. The LEASH TENSION section specifically was fundamental for them to understand. Thank you. Edit: My dogs were hard pullers to start, and I use a harness not prong collar. Anyone can and should go back to these basics.
I miss my big boy. He was a 102 pound Boxer mix. He looked like he was mixed with Rottweiler. He was too big for me to yank or push around, plus it didn't seem very nice to me. So I taught him verbal commands for left, right, start, stop, faster, slower. He was supposed to follow by my left leg as well, which he did, but it was easier to tell him verbally what we were going to do, too. I'd sometimes let him on a longer leash and guide him with verbal cues to treats, too. It was a lot of fun for both of us. And kind of like walking a small horse. I also used "free puppy" with him to let him know when we weren't training. Then he could sniff around and be a dog. He was 5 when I got him and he had all of this and more learned in 4 months. He was a really fun dog.
Wow man. Your dog is so calm and concentrated...i cant understand how you made him so stuck to you...my Dober is 4 months old and she loves to switch sides and pull like i dont exist
Larry, To keep it short and to the point you are AWESOME!!! I was afraid to use a ecollar for awhile, but before I did get one I read your book and watched all your vids. Guess what.... As a dog owner and considering my dog as my kid. We have made huge improvements! Thank you for all your videos and I am greatful that you keep it simple and don’t try to hide anything. Thank you!!!
I"m so glad you mentioned the structured walk, Larry. I'm also glad I'm retired from Canine Behavior/Dog Training LOL People in general (I mean your average dog training students) have a very hard time understanding that the walk is for THEM, not the dog if you will. The dogs job is to follow and pay attention and not for the owners to stop every 10 seconds so the dog can sniff and pee. Ahhhh, so simple yet so difficult to grasp for many :)
As long as I have a strong "let's go" or whatever command to resume walking, what's wrong with letting my dog sniff and pee all they want ? Also I strongly disagree, it's my dog's walk, not mine. It's his fun moment, plus letting him sniff usually tire him our really fast. I'm not waking up at 6.30 to walk an hour for my own pleasure, but it's a heaven for my dog. If i am in a hurry "go potty", "leave it" and "lets go" work pretty well together and i usually don't have to wait for him.
Best dog basic training video I’ve seen so far. The release command “free dog” is helpful. Also, I appreciate how you stressed the importance of training the dog to walk at heel, relaxed on the left side for their safety. Great 👍🏼
I have a Doberman. They are very smart dogs, learn real quickly. At least mine has. But in saying that these examples are amazing. But I have put a solid year into my Doberman myself in training . And the second year reinforcing. Now it’s just here and there to remind. Obviously she’s older now . But in all sincerity it’s tiring, exhausting for real, but sooooooo worth it. I get compliments all the time and I did it myself. Thanks for the video.
Wow, I had never thought about teaching leash pressure before. So simple, but so effective. I had heard to turn into my dog before, but I had never tried it with my right knee out. This helped SO much! We still have a long way to go, but this was a good start today. Thanks, Larry!
A.D we got a border collie on steroids .... wants to attack every stranger that comes around and wants to eat every dog it sees... recently decided to also include in his list of enemies passing by cars... Sweetest dog inside the house ... outside the house hes like a untrained Police Dog on roids... We need desperate help
His dogs werent trained at one point. Over time methods like this help train dogs out of their bad tendancies and toward positive ones. Worst case scenario, obedience school is always an option.
@@nann1442 Just search it on his channel. There's a dog from the "German Shepherd" playlist that pulls crazily and is highly reactive, by the end of video he's walking as good as this Doberman from the video.
You honestly think he buys and borrows trained dogs for his videos? He is giving you the techniques for free. Don't believe it don't use them. He's not going to make a 3 hour documentary so you can see the progression of the dog.
Thank you so much for giving us all of this free and extremely valuable information . You are really improving the lives of dogs and people everywhere. Thank you.
I dont care for some of the negative comments. I've had two dogs the I trained that were horrible walking dogs with a method like this. Trust me this works folks with any dog at any age.
I gave up trying to watch this, with that bloody thundering wind over the mic, also how about demonstrating with a completely untrained, miss behaving dog. I got a 68kg Rottie that used to pull my arm out of its shoulder socket until I trained him still tries to pull away to greet other dogs at times though.
my Rottie puppy is learning so much in just 6 days, but i have learned so much too, thank you Larry for your teaching me and my wife, bless you my friend
looks like a prancing horse-the techniques I have learned from Larry and applied to my springer spaniel puppy are fantastic=he is very practical and specific. the structured walk is absolute and I have seen people whom just let their dog out in the fenced yard and call it exercise end up with unbalanced dogs Thanks for your videos
We currently are having at home training from a similar trainer as yourself. Teaches the exact same way and has the same love and respect for animals! Great to know there are a lot of people such as yourself with similar styles of training.
Top video on leash walking for a compliant dog, would be beneficial to extend this video when walking a reactive dog, and how affective theses steps are for perfect leash walking
maximus star Yes I'd love to see something like with my 9 month GSD who walks fine on a prong but pulls like a beast on a flat collar and chokes himself out.
I am against them too, but I have seen them done well considering, and when I considered that these dogs would otherwise have been put down I get why folks use them. An e-collar properly used is way better, but the best is progressive positive training, the dog and the owner then understand what is needed to be done and live happily and with other humans.
Yeah, I have seen hostages walk really compliantly and orderly with a knife in their backs & a gun to their heads too!!! Honestly, if you need a prong collar or e-collar you shouldn't have a dog...simple.
Michelle K I addressed what to do with small dogs I forgot to mention it in the video use the right lake without bending it and the foot is the guy instead of the knee
Thank you for this basic technique. The way you explained which leg the dog needs to be familiar with when walking. I know this is an old video, but it was very educational for me and another technique I can use when working at dog shelters.
you are doing a great job and it does not look ridicilous , in fact i am pretty impressed by the way you do this stuff , and how your dog reacts on it / you very great insight , yet so basic but without any pressure or stress for the dog. i have dogs all my life and there are a few methods out of a 100 that actually work and i know for sure that your way of working a dog is efficient . the dog is absolutely in touch with you and is pleasantly focused on your moves without him being tensed .
Let me rephrase. I got my husky from a backyard breeder. Not knowing what a byb was, and what they do. I have now educated myself and now I know it was a bad choice going to a backyard breeder. When I got my dog, he was 7 weeks, and I know the breeders misstreated him because he was very timid and scared. Ive never hit or yelled at him. Its bad genetics and him being misstreated as a small pup. When my aunt came over, she was petting him, and he bit her. I didn't know he would do that. Ever since, he's been more aggresive than ever. And if I can't control him, somebody else is gonna get hurt, and my dog could be put down.
twoworkingk9s I had an aggression problem with my dog when he was a puppy. I used to get so frustrated. I watched many videos and while some advised being the alpha, those techniques only made things worth. The only thing that helped is giving it time, bonding with the dog, don't get frustrated or scream at your dog because he will act the same and get more fearful and aggressive. When he bites simply stop moving and tell the dog to stop biting. Also my dog responds very well to treats so lots of training using those. While he still have behavioral issues, aggression is not one of them anymore. He is 9 months old and couldn't imagine life without him.
And don't push your puppy into situations where he might not be comfortable especially since he is a fearful dog and could bite. Remember, his teeth are very sharp as a puppy. Teach him bite inhibition. I found useful videos by BrightDog Academy Dog Training and Zak Georges
Floyd015 im 20 n my 4month pitbull knows im the alfa, he wakes me up on the morning wen he needs to pee, before i feed him i tell him sit, he does then i feed him. I walk him n expose him to big small dogs all wile im relaxed
Mr. Krohn, this was great training. I have a quick ?. How do you do this training when there are a lot of distractions. What I mean is how do you have your dog only concentrate on you an not everything around you? thx
Love your videos. Do you have a good video of you training a 4 month roughly dog to have the structural walk ? From the beginning ? Where as he knows nothing to structural walk ? Thanks for the teachings
This dog might already know some of the foundational concepts of heel, but Larry speaks just the way he teaches. He isn't BSing. These are the exact steps he follows - give or take depending on the dog. Its just about experimenting and effort.
Viola Chaapel make them stop and sit when the other dog walks by, make sure the other dog is well passed before yours is allowed to continue. Once they have that down then practice walking by without the other dog being the focus. See if you can get a stranger with a well-behaved dog to practice going by you repeatedly. Most important is to not get anxiety about it, if you do, your dog will pick up on that, think there’s a reason to be scared, then want to defend you. IMHO
You have to stop their brain getting too excited, first sign of losing their focus on you, you have to bring them back...I'm doing that with my husky (very stubborn dogs), with short command "shh". Right before they get too excited. Bring their focus back to you!
It's a focus issue, depending on the severity of the issue or even age. Ie: my dog is a mutt looks pitbull mixed, female just over a year old. She's had an issue with attn when it comes to side distractions so I've practiced a lot with treats. SALMON is by far her favorite treat along with duck with sweet potato. I've gradually made her time increase with a word she's now understanding, "Leave it Alone, or ant!" "Ant" is our code word for Leave it! I then had a person come by and I had her minor distracted but kept her focus! Then I added another person, then kids, objects, even her food....Now I have her wait by her food and fresh water, she knows not to start her food until I'm appropriately away. This has helped with her on her walks so much. The other day she kept walking along paying no mind as other dogs barked and one was even out of his fence. Now were working on her Code commands, because were big fans of I am Legend! Check out Zak the dog trainer here on UA-cam he's great!
Its important when training your dog from the very beginning to bring yourself into their "bubble." Meaning remain close and lean down just enough to capture their attention and hold it as you give them commands. Rather than just repeating "sit" until the dog does it, capture the eye contact hold it and communicate. You then practice the same commands and break eye contact as they wait and anticipate your next command or reward. Over time the dog will automatically look to you for answers regarding its own behavior.
Hi Larry! We’re moving to Mount Juliet and I’ve watch your Doberman videos. We have a 3 year old female Doberman and you 100% will be hearing from me:)
Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for addressing this, quick question any tips on how to control my dog whilst walking with the buggy? I have a little one and whilst my dog doesn't pull all the time, when she's sees another dog she becomes difficult to control when I'm one handed (holding onto the pram). Will obviously be practicing the tips shown in this video ALOT to help us going forward.
This is great! My 8 month old pup is great at following me in the house but outside with distractions is a nightmare. I get glimmers of her walking nicely and then a dog or child approaches and she wants nothing more than to get to them. I thought her lease pressure when we started walking on the lead but tried it again and she has forgotten everything, we'll go back a few steps and build her up to the bigger distractions! Thanks for the tips, as always, a great, concise and useful video :)
For those whining like pups that this dog is already trained, here's a newsflash: this is a demonstration of foundational principles, so he can show the results while showing the method used. If you haven't even got the fundamentals down, why would anyone need to have an untrained animal for an exhibition, when you already have one? Start at the door, then proceed. Otherwise, this is like expecting to see bloody battle at a Karate exhibition; where the experts will slow things down for demonstrating technique purposes. The real problem is people want a trained and disciplined dog without first training and disciplining themselves.
Thank you for posting this. I’m going to try some of this tomorrow with my big puppy. This is the third video I’ve watched on leash training, all with different tips, and all three have really got me thinking about it in ways I haven’t before. Thanks again.
Police must keep their gun hand free, and same reason hunters heel on the left, a majority of people still being right handed . I have seen a few left handed hunters who heel on the right so their shot gun isn’t hitting the dog. Akc obedience is supposed to be on the left also , unless that rule has changed
Thank you. Great video. Perfect advice. You can see sometimes on the doberman face his expression is like "Hey man, why are we prancing around in the driveway? I have 7200 spots to check in the yard and make sure not a single piece of grass is out of place, I got a job to do... THEN we can prance around in the driveway." :)
Nooo , never looks silly Larry. People need to understand these basics. Yes that right leg blocker works a treat. I use it . Great video. Thank you : )
How do you go about your spouse who just doesn’t use any of these techniques and it’s all on you? Our German Shepherd listen to me and never rush out the door when I take him out. But as soon as my husband goes walk him he completely forgets his manners and rush through the door. I think its because my husband simply allows it and is not that strict as I am. Its like that with all commands.
Ivana Scelfo same thing with me. When I walk my dog she’s very good. When my gf walks her she forgets everything. My gf has no idea how to train her and doesn’t have patience. When I walk my dog if she burst out the door I’ll go back in 100 times if I have to. My gf gives up after like 3 times. I think the dog just learns that they can behave certain ways with certain people.
I have the same problem, my roommate looks after my dog for a few hours before I get home from work. I've tried to get her to work with me on training but she simply wont do it, and I see the bad habits in my dog. She lets my dog lick the dishes in the dishwasher, jump up with her front paws to lick the counter top, pull the leash while walking, giving her love after I've given a negative reinforcer.. it's very frustrating and I've come to accept she's not going to help me train my dog. It's just something we have to work around, my dog is a highly intelligent working GSD and now knows that the ruleset is different depending on who's handling her. Very frustrating, but oh well, at least she still respects my command.
Ur husband is not dominant and you are so.. the dog looks at you guys as pack leader or inferior . You are a pack leader. Your husband is just a toy they dont respect. If your dog respects you he will be disciplined and obey commands. So tell him to stop fking up your dogs training and put his foot down/balls on the table.
When multiple people live with dogs it's all of their dog, not just one person. Training can be mixed around so that your husband helps every now and then and then, easing it in.
I have a 5 mo French Brittany that pulls like a sled dog, this is helping some. Considering a choke chain or something to aid. Your content is great! Thanks for sharing. Wish I could come visit and learn from you in the real world.
I like your right-step idea, maybe that will work. My dog is obedient but get distracted/excited and pulls quickly on lead. I've two dogs, one I had trained one, but the second, a rescue dog, has never been on leash - but is a perfect angel in the house.
So the first and most important thing you say is don't let the dog pull or lead out the door. Then you don't give any instruction on how to teach this.
Wrath Az wait until he/she has calmed down abit, rather being too exited pulling you out the door the second it opens. Get them to sit or lay down before you open door an stay even after you've opened the door, then you lead out, patience.
This. The whole rest of the video is a "look how great this dog behaves" sort of situation. The only thing worse than the constant wind noise is watching a very well behaved dog, all the while thinking most dogs would act nothing like this... and wondering why on earth a person would make a training video with a perfectly well behaved animal. Maybe later we will see executive chefs cooking canned soup.
that was the instruction dip shit it means don't let the dog pull keep it from pulling make sure it doesn't go forward what did you miss about that pop the collar like someone with common sense
bloodshot gameing666 This vid is kind of like this. "How to do a perfect brake job" then just say "Install the parts" then show video of driving around stepping on brakes talking about how well the brakes work...
Are you using a regular flat collar? It looks to me like this video is using a slip collar. That's definitely going to create more pressure.
@@maryhandlename I posted this over a year ago. I was not using a flat collar. I was using a starmark training collar. I can now walk in with a flat collar without pulling, and I occasionally use a herm sprenger

Today I found the best dog training channel on UA-cam.
A good structured walk is the best training tool available to all dog owners. Unfortunately so many can’t take their dog on an enjoyable walk because of excessive pulling on the leash. Here are a few very basic things that any dog owner can start working on to teach their dog to walk nicely on a loose leas

Does it matter which side you keep your dog on?
Best video I have seen on loose leash walking and I have scoured the internet watching tons and tons of them. I learned 3 new things that NONE of the other ones ever explained to the point that you did. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Trainers always use a dog with perfect leash manners as an example. This isn't a criticism, but I wish just one trainer would take a raw dog, with no leash manners whatsoever, and show the transformation.
I can show you with my dog. I am a trainer.
Exactly right.
Please watch Zak. He does all the time.
watch Victoria on ITS ME OR THE DOG. YOull s3e her train many 'naughty' pulling running lunging dogs!
pt8648 t Zak George does this all the time.
What a pretty prance he does!
Guylene 325
I agree, Larry’s prance is very nice.
Yeah I agree
more like tripping over the loose leash
@@ihatekillerclowns no thats a prance. My show dogs walk like that
In my opinion your the best dog trainer on UA-cam. I appreciate how you break things up into so many necessary steps.
When a person knows his onions even if he doesn't say like or subscribe, you just find yourself doing so. Thanks for this informative piece.
This dog’s gait has such suspension and grace. A delight to watch him move!
So helpful! How do I get the dog to respect the space of the door opening... the first step?
Larry, please don't ever stop dog training!! You are my one stop shop and you are super intelligent when it comes to these animals!!!! Thank you for this video, also; our dogs are cray cray on the leash😫 I'm making a mental note of this information!! 🐕🐾
Best dog trainer on UA-cam!!!
My dog--- " Hey look, a cat ! Wheeeee...."
Me--- "Hey ! Bring my arm back !!!!!"
Lol
OMGosh She’s beautiful
Sorry bout that hehe
Anyway Thank You 🙏
real tired of watching dog trainers try to explain difficult concepts with dogs that already understand them.
Exactly! Try a dog with 0% eye contact & absolutely no obedience on a leash & is pulling you so hard that you are left with blisters on your hand then maybe I'll believe 😣
My thought exactly
Rainbow Cloud with a out of control dog to stop pulling is so easy......#1 prong collar on #2 start walking #3 let dog get out in front of you about 3 feet. #4 do a turn about 180 degrees Simultaneously with a strong leash pop. After about 2-3 times no more pulling. I Guaranteed he used this technique before turning on the camera. Nothing wrong with this technique but I agree don’t make it complicated for dog owners just because you don’t want sound like you’re using negative reinforcement.
@@cryssie7181 he does train dogs like that, I've see it, also conversational leash work would help with that :)
@@cryssie7181 I train dogs as well, I've had those trust me lol
One of the most stunning breeds right there
Thanks from Sweden.
Wow man. Your dog is so calm and concentrated...i cant understand how you made him so stuck to you...my Dober is 4 months old and she loves to switch sides and pull like i dont exist
same lol like im fucking invisible

Larry,
To keep it short and to the point you are AWESOME!!!
Came for the dog training tips but stayed for the rocket launch in the background
Whaleman too funny
The Robbie’s little trot ❤ I love how they walks
This was actually a really good video. I've never seen anyone turn inward do smoothly.
I love how your dog walks like he is prancing
Best dog basic training video I’ve seen so far. The release command “free dog” is helpful. Also, I appreciate how you stressed the importance of training the dog to walk at heel, relaxed on the left side for their safety. Great 👍🏼
OMG HIS LITTLE WALK IS SO CUTE PRANCING AROUND
I have a Doberman. They are very smart dogs, learn real quickly. At least mine has. But in saying that these examples are amazing. But I have put a solid year into my Doberman myself in training . And the second year reinforcing. Now it’s just here and there to remind. Obviously she’s older now . But in all sincerity it’s tiring, exhausting for real, but sooooooo worth it. I get compliments all the time and I did it myself. Thanks for the video.
That Dog is Beautiful, and I love the way he Prances.
Wow, I had never thought about teaching leash pressure before. So simple, but so effective. I had heard to turn into my dog before, but I had never tried it with my right knee out. This helped SO much! We still have a long way to go, but this was a good start today. Thanks, Larry!
I would like to see that done with a dog that is not trained as the dog you're showing in the video
Levelup Digital yup, like my dog.
@John Daleywhat are your techniques?
Levelup Digital omg my new puppy is the exact same way... have you figured out a way to stop that? I need help!
Larry khron the biggest Advocate for "Dog Training Tools " !! Salutes to you man !!!
Two thumbs up! I appreciated the end note about structured walking. I loved it all, thank you!
Thank you so much for being a good leader, and giving me tools to make it safer for myself, my dog, and others around us.
I want to see him do that with dog that is untrained and pulling like a horse nit a trained dog
Exactly.
That's what we need to see.
He's not going to make a 3 hour documentary so you can see the progression of the dog.
watch ITS ME OR THE DOG
Great explanation. Light straight line leach pressure coupled with reward was an Ah Ha moment for both me and the dog!
Thank you very much for filming these steps. I'm looking forward to putting them into practice.
Thank you so much for giving us all of this free and extremely valuable information . You are really improving the lives of dogs and people everywhere. Thank you.
You're so good. You trained that uncontrollable dog so quickly. You should start a UA-cam channel.
I dont care for some of the negative comments. I've had two dogs the I trained that were horrible walking dogs with a method like this. Trust me this works folks with any dog at any age.
Step 1: have a trained dog.
Works with untrained dogs as well.
Thank you for the most informative 15 minutes on dog training I’ve seen on UA-cam so far!
Use a foam wind screen for your mic so you dont compete with the noise
Or a "dead cat"
I gave up trying to watch this, with that bloody thundering wind over the mic, also how about demonstrating with a completely untrained, miss behaving dog. I got a 68kg Rottie that used to pull my arm out of its shoulder socket until I trained him still tries to pull away to greet other dogs at times though.
my Rottie puppy is learning so much in just 6 days, but i have learned so much too, thank you Larry for your teaching me and my wife, bless you my friend
ur dog walk so proud lol his a funny prancer!
looks like a prancing horse-the techniques I have learned from Larry and applied to my springer spaniel puppy are fantastic=he is very practical and specific. the structured walk is absolute and I have seen people whom just let their dog out in the fenced yard and call it exercise end up with unbalanced dogs Thanks for your videos
I have a lot of information out there on dealing with reactivity and aggression. The truck is not to deal with it on a walk but instead fix it
excellent point, it is often due to fear and not knowing how to deal with a situation, just like a kid.
I used this video 2 years ago to start training my dog! Thank you for posting!
This will be tricky with a corgi that is a foot off the ground hahah ugh.
Michelle K I forgot to address that in the video Michelle. Just use your right leg and your foot straightened out same method just don’t bend the knee
Larry Krohn You are awesome, Larry!! I really appreciate you and your videos.
Michelle K I addressed what to do with small dogs I forgot to mention it in the video use the right lake without bending it and the foot is the guy instead of the knee
Yes! Dont squish eem! 😆😆💕🐾🐾
Thank you for this basic technique. The way you explained which leg the dog needs to be familiar with when walking. I know this is an old video, but it was very educational for me and another technique I can use when working at dog shelters.
Wow, he's beautiful. I also love the video. Thank you. I'm going to try this with my terrorists...I mean terriers.

He would be even more beautiful without the disfiguring cropped ears and docked tail,no need for it.
you are doing a great job and it does not look ridicilous ,
in fact i am pretty impressed by the way you do this stuff , and how your dog reacts on it / you
very great insight , yet so basic but without any pressure or stress for the dog.
i have dogs all my life and there are a few methods out of a 100 that actually work and i know for
sure that your way of working a dog is efficient .
the dog is absolutely in touch with you and is pleasantly focused on your moves without him being tensed .
Floyd015 thank you so much!!
Floyd015 im 20 n my 4month pitbull knows im the alfa, he wakes me up on the morning wen he needs to pee, before i feed him i tell him sit, he does then i feed him. I walk him n expose him to big small dogs all wile im relaxed
You don't know the dog is timid and scared because of abuse. It could just be a timid and scared dog..
Mr. Krohn, this was great training. I have a quick ?. How do you do this training when there are a lot of distractions. What I mean is how do you have your dog only concentrate on you an not everything around you? thx
This dog is already trained so how do we judge the effectiveness with an untrained dog that pulls?
What a beautiful Dog. ..prances like a true thoroughbred.
When I do this should I start as soon as I meet it?
I have a husky and she pulls very bad. I have been told she needs a collar instead of a harness but I am unsure which is best.
That's a nice doberman, thanks for the info
Love your videos. Do you have a good video of you training a 4 month roughly dog to have the structural walk ? From the beginning ? Where as he knows nothing to structural walk ? Thanks for the teachings
He looks like Nick Offerman! The thought of Nick Offerman making dog training videos makes me thrilled.
This dog might already know some of the foundational concepts of heel, but Larry speaks just the way he teaches. He isn't BSing. These are the exact steps he follows - give or take depending on the dog. Its just about experimenting and effort.
Do you have a technic to teach your dog how to not lunge, bark and pull when they see another dog?
Viola Chaapel make them stop and sit when the other dog walks by, make sure the other dog is well passed before yours is allowed to continue. Once they have that down then practice walking by without the other dog being the focus. See if you can get a stranger with a well-behaved dog to practice going by you repeatedly. Most important is to not get anxiety about it, if you do, your dog will pick up on that, think there’s a reason to be scared, then want to defend you. IMHO
Thank you
You have to stop their brain getting too excited, first sign of losing their focus on you, you have to bring them back...I'm doing that with my husky (very stubborn dogs), with short command "shh". Right before they get too excited. Bring their focus back to you!
I would suggest the look command start inside the work your way outdoors
The first left leg following tip did look silly and I never thought of the right leg turning into them. This was exactly what I needed!
How do you get him to watch you constantly, he's really focused on you and that seems to be the way that he stays in heel
I have the same issue Lisa, am hoping that training our dog everyday will make a difference once we are out in public!
Exactly! 🙌🙌🙌
Thank you for posting this. I’m going to try some of this tomorrow with my big puppy. This is the third video I’ve watched on leash training, all with different tips, and all three have really got me thinking about it in ways I haven’t before. Thanks again.
Why do dog trainers always want the dog on their left side? I'm more comfortable with them on my right.
Me too.Actually, they SHOULD be on your right, unless they changed the rules...we should google proffessionals.
Police must keep their gun hand free, and same reason hunters heel on the left, a majority of people still being right handed . I have seen a few left handed hunters who heel on the right so their shot gun isn’t hitting the dog. Akc obedience is supposed to be on the left also , unless that rule has changed
You carry your gun in your right unless you are a lefty
I think its a conformation thing not really sure but i tell people its up to them
Can you show a version of this with a small dog ie a dachshund ? It’s quite difficult with the correction of direction
It was ice on road today, my dog pulled me like 15 meters😂
Should have filmed it on a day when it wasn't windy. Hurts my ears with the volume being so low and I had to turn it up to hear you
Nooo , never looks silly Larry. People need to understand these basics. Yes that right leg blocker works a treat. I use it . Great video. Thank you : )
He prances like a horse with his front feet. I freaking love it, he’s so beautiful ❤️ I miss having a Doberman
Means he is happy
Fantastic advice. Thank you. You sure understand dogs. That knee-butt into the dog gives me hope. Maybe I can walk my dogs again. THANK YOU LARRY.
You have a wife not a husband
Can u start of with rookies ?? That dog looks nothin short of a show dog
Maybe later we will see executive chefs cooking canned soup.
that was the instruction dip shit it means don't let the dog pull keep it from pulling make sure it doesn't go forward what did you miss about that pop the collar like someone with common sense
bloodshot gameing666 Dipshit... One word idiot.
bloodshot gameing666 This vid is kind of like this. "How to do a perfect brake job" then just say "Install the parts" then show video of driving around stepping on brakes talking about how well the brakes work...
So glad I’ve subscribed, second video I watch, a video on basics(!) and I’m already learning new things and improving.
