Been to Craggy Dome plenty of times. If you go east from the summit, there's a bit of a social trail and it gets interesting. The best hiking in that area is off-trail, if you can avoid the thickets. It's slow going, but so many maintained, official trails are overused these days. ua-cam.com/video/57Wq95VsVbI/v-deo.html
Very cool waterfall. You are right - it doesn't need a big flow to be impressive. Still, I'd like to visit after a huge storm...probably wouldn't want to stand under it then though. :-D Nice trails...no wonder it was crowded.
Hey Zachary, bagged Craggy Dome (number 15 for SB6K) this past weekend with two of my hiking buddies. Did out and back from Craggy Gardens picnic area. Fall wild flowers in the gardens area were beautiful! You were right about the rhododendron hell on top of Dome! We searched all over the top of the Dome, found the steel posts but could not find the elevation marker. If you left it by the steel post it is gone now - bummer! Did Craggy Pinnacle at the end of our hike, what a way to end the day! Heading to Roan Highlands next, already checked your post for that area. Think we will just do it from Carvers Gap. Love your Mild Adventures Zach, keep up the postings!
Another video doing research for the next section. Douglas Falls looks very nice... actually considered hiking off the MST for this, but I'll come back for it one day.
The rhodendron bloom at Craggy and Roan Mountain seems to be earlier most years than it used to be. I was at the parking lots of Craggy Gardens and below Craggy Pinnacle yesterday 6/5 (with rain, fog and 25 mph wind, so I didn't get out) and the rhodies were at peak bloom, about the same timing as last year. Last year I hiked out to Grassy Bald in the Roan Mountains on 6/14 and the rhodies and flame azaleas were both near peak.
I'm thinking Thursday or Friday this week for Roan Mountain instead of next week. I'd rather be a little early than late, and I'm not going up there on a weekend.
My home overlooks Burnett Reservoir & up to the Craggies. Haven't been to Douglas Falls Looking forward to it now. Thanks for the post!
Thanks, it's a really great waterfall and setting.
Just at Douglas Falls today on the Big Ivy side.

This video is from 2016. I've since been back a few times and explored more of the summit, including the manways you're referring to.

It would also be interesting in the winter when it would likely have tall ice formations from the base
We got to see it in the snow and ice...love it.

I found it by the post and left it there, someone must have taken it for some reason.

It's a great waterfall but quite the side trip, lots of miles and elevation change to reach it.
Enjoyed the hike, especially the waterfall
Thanks!

I hiked in that area this weekend, a lot of the rhodos already seemed to be wilting.

5:04 that's where we found the "poop bucket" in Greg, Outdoors latest video. You'll just have to watch it to see.
That doesn't sound super appealing
Zachary Robbins it was funny
I'll try to check it out
