I’ve noticed when riding around the South where most rural roads don’t have wide lanes or shoulders, many people ride with one wheel on the centerline, all the time. I guess it’s too much trouble to keep focused on lane discipline. This is a very pretty park. I camped in a park close to Robinsville in NC and had a great time walking and watching the kids play. My kids are all in their 40s and don’t camp much.
I think watching the kids can be especially entertaining at camp. And I have been told the rules of the road in the south is take the whole road until someone comes at you, then move over to your side of the road. Just pay attention! lol It can be scary on the winding road in the mountains!
Wilson's Creek was my playground growing up in Lenoir, there were several massive floods there and several people drowned that were camping down on the rock formations. There was also military training for the Vietnam War there.
Not sure how folks miss sites 1-5. Stayed Mortimer this past weekend in #4. They are across Thorp Creek behind and beyond the large picnic shelter. Flood last year wiped out the foot access bridge from the road. See Rick's vid from 4 years ago for bridge location. FS has it slated for upgrade and replacement. Great place to stay. Always full to nearly full weekends during the summer. Thanks for the good reviews Rick.
Thanks for the comment and for stopping by. There is a big tree down just a little way up that you can use to get across the creek. I wouldn't recommend it after any Adult beverages though !
That little country store is nice...the Fly Fishing supplies are minimal...he has a great collection of Boy Scouts of America patches; some of them pretty old. I've never camped at Mortimer Campground, but have fished Wilson Creek...plan to try the Campground eventually.
I didn't think the Boy Scout Patches were Old. They were when I was a boy scout.... couple years back..... Are you saying I'm old?!? lol It's not the easiest place to get too, especially on a hot day. The Wilson Creek are can be very crowded. But it's a great place to relax.
Yes, but the FS campground is a little nicer, and cheaper really. Though They do have electric and water at your site. So thats why is more. Thanks for the comment.
I used to camp there before they halved the campground. I miss the sites that were eliminated. Much nicer. Since then, I haven't stayed at Mortimer, but I have used the picnic area and hiked the trails.
It almost seems like they are putting more into the picnic area than the campground. The current budget is non-existent, but it would be a shame to see it go. Its the only nice showers in the area.
Another great video with lot's of great information. Keep them coming from this area. We love seeing them & maybe getting a chance to go visit them someday. This one will definitely go on the "bucket list". Thank you Rick & Akela!!
Anyplace you go with a good attitude will be a rewarding adventure. There are so many places in these mountains that if you head in this direction and go UP, you find fantastic things to wonder over. Thanks for the comments !
When I traveled the Blue Ridge Parkway in that part of the state, it seemed like the Appalachian Trail was never far from the parkway. Great video! Akela is looking pretty grown up!
From this part, its a ways away, but it does cross the parkway several times. Akela is holding his own. I have to keep him away from my cameras though, he likes making movies !
Headed to Europe on a 33 day camping trip this week, looking forward to your videos when I get back. 11 countries in 33 dsys, should be fun. Another great video.
He is a good looker. Just a little Darker than my Caesar, but he is in good shape and has a good attitude ! I hope to train him up to be a great companion.
There were a few! But they don't have Black flies down here like they do in the ADK. They call them "Biting Midges" and you are bothered by 4-6 of them at a time. Mostly just around Dusk. Not the all day long 50-100 Black Flies that swarm you in the ADK. Its a really nice place !!
Its at least a month a head of CNY. And sun is outright blazing when you are standing in it at noon. Being from CNY, I'm not used to direct sunshine !! LOL
So, we missed you there by a few hours. We left 1030 am that day. I know by the neighbors that are there and the wind that day made for a coupke of real white knuckle experience. Regardless it was because of that first video that you did that we went there. I just wish we would have left Saturday, I would have liked to meet a real you tube star! Happy trails!
Looks like a lilac tree...being that I am from Schuylerville NYY! Anyway, I love all your videos and have been watching you for about a year on and off...your fur family has changed ...trying to find the words without knowing what happened...sending love and light and happy that you have a new family member...ps I discovered you by looking for free camping videos in Adirondacks...Tons of useful info...THANKYOU! Keep on Truckin! Peace ~ Jack
They don't have Lilacs down here. You can buy Air Fresheners with that Lilac Smell, but they have no idea what that is...LOL. But they do have Rhododendrons and Azaleas everywhere, so It might make up, but they don't last and they don't smell.
He kept trying to grab them out of the fire, but he is no stupid dog !! He realized they were there to stay... HOT ! And there were plenty more where they came from !
Thats what I think I figured them out to be. But boy they were vibrantly purple in the bright sun. Need a better camera to catch that, or maybe do a better job with editing to up the color saturation some ! Thanks for the comment !
Really nice campsite. Looks like a pleasant area (Mortimer plus) to spend some time and relax. Akela is a good looking stick-fetcher even if he does hydrate the kindling a bit.
I'm thinking he might be a "Stick-a-holic". I have to stop him because he chews them into nothing, and he needs to be trained to retrieve a wooden dumbell and not chew it at all.... I'm hoping he will grow out of the need to chew everything !!
I made it. I bought an entire roll of that blue flat strapping and I just sew it on a regular sewing machine. It is really nice. I use it for tracking and for Slack lining ! LOL
Oh gawd! I've met people who contracted Lyme disease & had to start on antibiotics due to the symptoms. Hope he checks this out. Love his videos though. I have an older A-liner & yep have water issues. So now I'm gonna try the weather stripping redo repair has he had suggested in previous videos.
Our adventurers took us through all sorts of brush. It could be anything on my collar, in my hair, down my shirt !! It's just having fun in the woods !
Sitting by the campfire with sound of running water and the smell of nature, life at it's best!
Absolutely ! Thanks for the comment !
Wisteria Vine. It blooms on last year's growth. It's invasive, but very beautiful. I look forward to it every year.
It didn't look like it was the trees best friend, but it certainly did make a striking view from the bridge ! Thanks for chiming in !

That was a beautiful place, I loved it. Thanks for thr trip! Blessings
Thank you! One of my most favorite Spots !

@@GoingNoWhereFast - I try to avoid Wilson on the weekends...otherwise, not too bad.
The blooms are from the wisteria vine. It takes over everything nearby, much like kudzu.
Awww.. Thats too bad, still quite pretty. I wonder how it got to such a distant from anywhere place? Rhetorically.
We went backpacking in the area a few years ago. Beautiful area. You can camp next to that general store also.

Aquila is all "WHAT ARE YOU DOING RICK? You're settting my sticks on fire!" LOL!!
Yes, he was a little confused about that. He kept trying to steal them back. I'm surprised he was smart enough not to burn his eye brows off !! LOL
Really love and enjoy all your videos Rick, Thank you!!
Thanks for coming along on our trips!! Its only half the fun without viewers

E-gads, I hope you have time to actually enjoy the trip. That sound like a real whirl wind tour ! Have fun, Let us know if it was worth it !
Seems like a nice place to relax! That is one beautiful puppy! I hope to shake his paw one day. Thank you for sharing!
He is a good looker. Just a little Darker than my Caesar, but he is in good shape and has a good attitude ! I hope to train him up to be a great companion.
also camping near the little general store near by.
Yes, and they have a great cookout on Weekends!
Nice intro. 👍 Really pretty place, love the creek. Akela is so handsome. He definitely wanted to help with the sticks. 😊👍
He is Stick Crazy !! It is definitely one of my top ten sites, wait for the next video, it will show you even more !
Great video, it looks very relaxing.
Ha ha... It was until I took the hike up the mountain..LOL. Nearly died in the forest ! Thanks for the comment !
Mortimer Campground?! I can dig it!
Hey, check into it, maybe you own it !! LOL
Looks like Akela enjoyed the water
He is getting used to water, but he really isn't sure he likes it.
Sooo beautiful! It is spring and you are camping with no black flies!?

Going NoWhereFast I am really seriously thinking of going out that way now! It sounds so nice! Maybe this summer!!
Another great video at another great place. Beautiful there. Be safe, Be blessed 😉☺💙🇺🇸❤
Stay tuned for the hike we took, it is a very interesting place and one of my favorites.
Looks much greener there than here in CNY.

@@buckrogers5893 But its pretty!! lol
Does Akela wonder way you are burning her toys? Very enjoyable video. Thank, Rick!

Campfire looks lovely. Can I help you collect firewood? I can bring my own chair. Lynne
Anytime, I always like company !!
Vines look like Wisteria !!! Are they purple? Very beautiful camp ground!!! They smell so good too!!

Which National Forest are you in Rick? Is it Pisgah?
Yes, Pisgah, but in the Far Northern Area, the Grandfather Mountain District.
Where did you get Akela blue tie out?
I made it. I bought an entire roll of that blue flat strapping and I just sew it on a regular sewing machine. It is really nice. I use it for tracking and for Slack lining ! LOL
@ 8:25 That’s called Wisteria!
I figured that one out eventually !
looks like a tick on your collar
