Test Drive 4 (PS1) - San Francisco 1, USA

- After Ridge Racer I will now show you another racing game that I played when I grew up: Test Drive 4 from 1997. :)
There are 5 tracks in the game: Keswick, San Francisco, Bern, Kyoto and Washington. My favourite track was always San Fracisco, followed by Washington. These two also have the best music. :P (some of the menu music is awesome as well)
The cars in the game are a mix of some older American cars and some (at the time) modern cars from everywhere. When I was young I always used the old Corvette that you can see here.
The fastest car in the game is clearly the Jaguar XJ220. As you can see I have no chance to catch the AI driver with it on the highway part in the beginning (unless it crashes there, which sometimes happens).
I practiced this track for quite a few hours yesterday to set a fast time on it and this is the best that I managed but there is definitely still room for improvement. I think a 2:53 should be possible for sure if I take the corner before the big jumps like I do in the first blooper. The jumps themselves can also be taken at full speed but then you need a lot of luck to avoid the side traffic.
However, apart from this infamous side traffic the game is actually very fair. The normal traffic can almost always be avoided when your reaction time is good enough, which makes it far less frustrating when you crash than in many of the newer NFS titles because you know that it was your own mistake. I probably restarted this track more than a hundred times when recording this video but I still enjoyed my time with it. :)
It is also possible to play without traffic or time limit but I rather did it the default way here. You can also unlock reverse versions of all the tracks, which have a different weather or daytime.
System: PlayStation 1 (emulated with ePSXe190)
Game: Test Drive 4
Track: San Francisco 1, USA
Car: 1969 Chevrolet Corvette ZL-1
Transmission: Automatic
Controller: Logitech Precision (d-pad only)
PS: No, I did not do the wallrides yet when I was a child. You can blame EA for teaching me that... :P
Edit: Sorry for the abrupt video start. Looks like I forgot about that part during editing. :/
Man this brings back so many good memories. Miss this days.
When i was a kid I often played this game with my neighbour when he had just lost is father due to cancer. He always select the same car (can't remember which) because his father always chose that one when they were playing together.
I can remember in the weeks leading up to Gran Turismo coming out I absolutely caned this game, with this car and track especially, because it was about the most realistic racer I had and I wanted to try to prepare! Good memories
Using the walls of the map for taking corners was so much fun, it was a big game changer as a kid figuring that out. This is a great track with the famous jumps. My other favourite is the long sprint at the end of Washington. When I was very very little I could only come 3rd place on the first track. The Jaguar would always win with Cebera 2nd place but one day the Camaro beat them all and I became so obsessed with it. Then I was winning all the races and setting my best times with the 1969 Corvette. Great memories, thanks for this upload :)
I think I only managed to win on San Francisco and maybe Washington as a kid in the single race mode. I remember unlocking the reverse version of San Francisco, which was at night. One day I have to revisit the game and actually beat all the tracks and maybe even the tournament modes. :)
Those jumps are so satisfying
I like that you included some messing up on the hills since this is exactly what I came to the video for lol 😋 thanks for the memories
AmandaTheStampede how old were you when you played this?
The TVR Cerbera had bugs. The top speed of this car was incredible when you didn't choose it, on the contrary, was slow.
Definitely, the 69 Corvette was my favorite car.
Its the cheater AI using rubberband.
Use to play this along side NFS Hot Pursuit 3 as a kid. Love racing Games
Man I miss those days. I remember the music etc. Felt so good.
This level was awesome. The Chevelle was my favorite.
Excellent game, I still play him specially with Jaguar and Playabe!!
This game was why I bought a Playstation.

Oh the amount of hours i'd put in this game back then. It didn't look nor play that good, but it was my guilty pleasure. Frisco with Cobra was my fav
This track and the Viper GTS-R were it. Right after hitting Stage 2, hit the small jump @ 110-112mph to use the first jump downhill (@ 2nd jump you have to be going around 150-160 mph to clear 3rd jump and land on 4th hill)
I remember i used to play this game back in the 2000s on my old PS1 or PS2,but i remember my older brother rented this game from blockbuster video or movie gallery back in the late 90s for his old PS1 when he was a teenager and i was a little kid back then when this game first came out and this was the first game I played and uploaded on my original channel back in 2015 I was playing it on my old PS3 but now i don’t have my old video anymore since my original channel was removed last year but it’s see some gameplays from over a decade ago still on UA-cam.
4:17 - Of all the vehicles it could have hit, it had to pick the police car to hit.
I used to ride them corners up against the buildings an somehow keep my speed consistent lol
That Corvette was my favorite in this game
3:42 YAAAAA-HA-HA-HA-HOOOOEY!
Loved this game and the superbird
Great driving
I was born in 2005, and now I had wished I can get those games although it's too late... ;-;
Doesn't need too late, you can playing using emulators.
The sweet old 1990s.
This game had spilt screen, racing my freinds ghost, it was so much fun
Why he scream like that "Gooo"
You stole my favourite car, favourite track and the same driving technique. Greetings, what a nice retrogaming brotherhood.
1:36 - Yee-Haw!
1:40 - Wa-Hoo!
1:44 - Oh, yeah!
I remember back in the day....the fucking jaguar was sooooo fast but handled like crap.
***** the silver car right? i still remember that being a bitch haha
DBGuitar13 Yep. I also remember putting in codes to get other cars. There was a mini-cooper type car that was not fast but handled so well that it didn't matter.
+Venomrs4 For that reason, I used to drive the Corvette 69.
The Camaro ZL1 was more fast but very hard to handle.
5:33
Cuda: yo corvette stop ur killin me
Corvette: >:)
This game was my first racing game 🥲…sooo many hours spent playing with my older cousin and fuel my interest for cars
Lol, brings back memories!!!
yeah. that was my favorite car.
Corvette 69 ZL1
test drive 4
Nice!
Mien back then this was like 4K to us. Mien oh mien
This was the first racing game i played as a kid this and crash nitro kart
yes it does, so many cars i hit going around curves and up hill as well back in tbe day.😅
Watching this in 720p just feels wrong! Lol!!!
This game is what made me love the corvette ZL1 in the first place, good pick for the video :)
Fucking Jaguar always melted me when I was a kid I could never catch up.
I freaking miss this game. I liked this one and part 6. because they are the only two i've ever played. didn't play the other ones.
Play Test Driver 5, had more content compared to 4 and 6.
The game test drive 4 was awesome when it first came out then midnight club DUB edition then the Incredubule HULK then I put away my playstation 2 and when on to other things.
Damn, im getting flashbacks
Looks like cars are floating in air
The walls in the game always slowed me down lol
The game physics are better than test driver 6
Actually no, both game had bad physics, but Test Drive 4 had worse crash physics that makes you lose much time.
God damn I wanna play this so bad now.
Idk why but the sound of the tires when you break reminds me of Tom scream
This game was so damn fun...now they just want to make shitty open-world racing games!!
Yeah what's the difference?
@@JohnSmith-xx1lx the difference is that close world racing games with tracks with just one way from start to finish is much better than open word racing games with 100 ways without any clue
@@residentevildeadspace5729 What do u guys have against Open world?
To chill and Explore the world is always fun!
Test Drive 4 its a crap compared to the open world games, open world doesn't its bad.
@@residentevildeadspace5729 Exactly. That's why I never got into Midnight Club or Burnout Paradise. I never knew where the heck I was going. Lost many races by taking a wrong turn.
Damn, that's a tiny ass Transamerica Pyramid.
I want to see high jumps
I think it was this game that a had the cheat for a really fast mini but it only do like 100 mph, so everyone used to catch you up
Does the cd for this play in a cd player? I might have to rip it to add with my PC rip.
It's remind me Driver!
5:24 Death From Above +500
Oh wait wrong game
Eu joguei muito isso ae
Strange how the 69 Corvette was by far the best car in the game, while the Cuda was by far the worst!
Shelby Cobra its the best car due of the handling and acceleration, but had less top speed than the Corvette.
Beta plymouth hemi cuba 5:24!
Beta? That its actually the same model used, nothing changed.
so what if.............. you let off before that huge jump & Go fast as you can without going so fast you leave the road then once your over the crest hammer down all the way down
Jogava em 97
danm. The ps version looks ugly as hell
Fun fun Hi people @Jesus pardoned us of all wrong doing with his death/blood. He came back to life 3 days later. God is his father. His father made all. Breathe oxygen@
This game had spilt screen, racing my freinds ghost, it was so much fun
