  • And now we arrive at a game that is simultaneously one of the most well-known and also underrated games in the FPS category. Boasting the Wolfenstein engine, Tom Hall, and Apogee, Rise of the Triad is the little game that should have risen farther than it did, and yet it lingers today like a titan's shadow. How did it come to be, and is it still worth playing today? Let's take a look, kids!

First off, loved the video. That we're still getting reviews of the game a few decades later blows my mind as one of the people who were there at creation. Thanks for this video existing. Some feedback having watched all this.
4:30 - I love that this picture turns up a bunch. I say that because I took it myself on Tom's first day working for Apogee.
    4:37 - Jim Dosé's name is pronounced "Doh - say" not "doh-see"
6:48 - the Extra gibs code was called "EKG Mode" or "engine killing gibs". That used to be the norm for gibs during development, but we discovered that lesser computers had issues with that many gibs all the time, so we had to rein it in a bit. Hence EKG Mode for those that still wanted it and could handle it.
13:30 - Yeah, we thought giving users a different set of levels in shareware vs ep1 of full would be more gameplay value - something you touched on a little there. It gets more confusing as we also produced a shareware version of HUNT begins for a specific vendor which had additional shareware levels not in any other iteration of the game - even ones direct from Apogee.
23:43 - The cheat codes you refer to as "hindering you" we internally called "Power downs".
25:50 - I exploited shrooms mode in my Vomitorium levels - using the effect of shrooms mode with the "You to Not Belong Here" texture for maximum effect. I have an entire story about You do Not Belong here on my blog, too: joesiegler.blog/2013/07/you-do-not-belong-here/
42:05 - Pretty sure the Monks were in the game before 04x01? Or am I remembering wrong?
46:00 - If I remember right, the thinking was that since we had trained you to shoot everything by the time you get to El Oscuro, that we'd fuck with you and make you wonder how to kill him.
49:30 - you need to play EROTT. It's even harder. Tom and I did all that, and we had harder levels because of what we learned from the original game. My level "A Boulder Vision" did some weird shit with boulders. The Grand Vomitorium exploits visual oddities even more than the original.
51:16 - Corridor 7 had some Wolf engine firsts too. First with reflective surfaces, and first with any kind of Deathmatch, although there weren't a ton of characters for that. I remember playing Deathmatch there as a file cabinet. Also, former 3DR staffer Ruben Cabrera worked on that. He told me of plans for a Corridor 8 that never happened.
57:21 - You gotta eat your vegetables.. Can you hear me? You gotta eat your vegetables.. NOWWWWW! #BobbyPrince #Dopefish #CommanderKeen
The concept you mentioned a few times about it being old tech was obviously known to the dev team. It's why the game is so over the top on features and gimmicks and level design and all that. Had to compensate somehow. :)
Very much enjoyed the video. Tkx for doing it.

Joe Siegler says I gotta play EROTT. Guess I'm gonna play EROTT.
Thank you so much for the commentary, especially the correction on pronunciation Jim's name! It was a bit of a shot in the dark and when you only have the written word to go on....
Meanwhile, if the Monks show up before E4A1, it must be in a secret level. Didn't see them at all in the base game prior to that.
Thank you again for your part in this game. Like I said in the video, I do have fond memories playing it at a friend's house, guns akimbo and gibs flying. I'm glad I had the notion and the opportunity to sit down at last to play it, and it was well worth the wait. May the legacy of the DIPs live forever!

@@RubyRangerr William Scarboro has been gone 20 years now. That's sad.
As I said, I wasn't positive, but I was pretty sure monks appeared before Episode 4. But I'd have to dig into it to find out for sure.
Also, first level of EROTT starts with Monks. ;)
I designed the NME level in EROTT, it's far harder to do there because there's nowhere to hide unlike the first one. And the Krist level has two Krists.
There's a room with like 100 ballistikrafts all in one spot, stacked on top of each other, it's like a giant 10 floor high ballisikraft. Muhahahahaha. :)

@@RubyRangerr Also, the Comm-Bat levels were unique. They weren't just the same game levels except for deathmatch. they're unique levels, but then given Dark War / HUNT Begins, that shouldn't be a surprise. We called them Comm-Bat for the same reason God mode was called "Woundless with Weapons". It was felt that the terms Deathmatch & God mode were "too id Software".
I've often thought recently of doing "director's commentaries" for my own levels. Perhaps when the remaster comes out I might do that on my own.

I remember hearing that the Comm-Batt levels were all unique from campaign maps. I was looking into the Tim Willits claim that he was the first to make deathmatch maps specifically for deathmatch, and I believe both Tom Hall and Romero chimed in by pointing at ROTT.
MAN, this is exciting stuff. I love this, this is why I wanted to make history videos. The tidbits! Thank you so much Joe, and yeah, I hope you make you some director's commentary when the remaster drops, I would love to hear that insight!

I love this game so much, not only because the whole thing is designed specifically to just be charming arcade fun, but also because the dev process for it represents what I think is the healthiest model for game development. It's clear to see in every detail of the game that the DIP were passionate about making this game and had as much fun doing so as we have playing it.

You know, everyone hates the split missile *but it becomes top tier when you realize it has alt-fire that lets you control when it splits.* Click mouse1 and it splits instantly, which is pretty useless in most scenarios. But keep holding mouse1 when you fire, and it'll shoot a single missile straight ahead like a bazooka until it either hits something and explodes, or you release mouse1 which splits it into two homing missiles. It's great for hitting enemies lurking around corners, in niches down hallways, behind columns and walls long distances away, etc. It's like having a bazooka and double-heatseeker in one!
ROTT was the first fps to have a weapon with an alt-fire mode, IIRC (among _many_ other innovative firsts that have since become genre standards).

I love how you touched up upon just how impressive their accomplishments are on THE FUCKING WOLF3D ENGINE. Young me at the time didn't even realize how dated the technology was compared to Doom because the shareware maps just seemed to hide it so well and everything was more tastefully made with care. I still stand by my thoughts that the shareware, overall, was a better product than the registered version. When I finally got my hands on the full version...I hated it. I was so let down from the expectations I had from loving shareware. Just last year I finally gave it an honest go and tough it out on the levels that I didn't like...somewhere around level 5 there were 3 moments that just kept taking me on the verge of giving up on the game. Then.... the game finally got good... and I was hooked.

Fun fact ROTT was the first fps to have rocket jumping (several years before Quake!). In fact, ROTT brought many technical firsts to the genre and some seriously impressive stuff for the primitive Wolf3D engine. If it wasn't for the hard limitation of 90-degree walls, it would've blown every other fps out of the water for innovation. Even as it is they did enough, and made the game just plain _fun_ enough, that at least in my case after 15 minutes you don't even notice the limited map geometry anymore. I like to compare it to watching a movie in B&W: when the movie is great, after a few minutes the fact it's not in color just doesn't even register.

One of my favorite classic games from the 1990s! This was the golden era for fps gaming and most of the tech stuff and engine dev also happened before 2000s rapidly compared to the 2000-10s or 2020s even. Hardware took quite prominent leaps, too, during the 90s and the pace is certainly slower during 2000s and later.
Most of the not succesful fps games were created during 90s. Some of the are more authentic and bizarre (in a good way!) like ROTT - and not so famous although. The game was unique for many peculiar aspects. For example, is there any other game that player can be turned to a dog with a power-up? Or the armor system or health system; or that the enemy can snag your heavy weapon and fire it? Or that some of the enemies can plead for mercy? And if you forfeit it, they will attack you soon :D Or is there any other fps where some enemies can feign death and attack you when close enough?
Nevertheless, I have never seen any market fps game in which you can retrieve the previous quicksave by holding shift key while quickloading. If you happen to save in a bad spot by mistake. Some of the title screens get new looks in Halloween, 24.12. etc. You can test this by changing date in Windows and the launch the game :)
Thanks for the nice analysis and video!

Interesting video! *ROTT is an oscure classic; a mix of balls-to-the-wall shooter, dark eerie atmosphere, and weird humor that's really unlike anything else.* I bought it on release back in '95 and played the hell out of it (amid Doom, Duke, Quake, Blood, Killing Time, Powerslave, etc). That whole atmosphere of dark weirdness is what kept me coming back to ROTT -- that and the awesome multiplayer. It really was a unique fever dream of a game, and one that could've only been made during the height of the Golden Age of PC gaming (c1993 to 2003). I also admit that decades later, I too still randomly have ROTT music play in my head. It's the greatest fps soundtrack of all time, and among the best video game OSTs in general; right up there with Symphony of the Night.
Today ROTT is criminally oscure, although hopefully Ludicrous Edition and all the new attention will change that. *_I highly recommend Ludicrous by the way: Night Dive have truly outdone themselves once again_* with all the effort, polish and extras crammed into the remaster 👌🤌❤ 9.5/10 if only it had co-op I'd rate it perfect, but I keep hearing rumors of future updates...
Some ROTT trivia: "Dog Mode" used sprites digitized from George Broussard's actual dog Loki. Sebastion Krist's hoverchair was a random Apogee office chair with some cardboard taped to it. The Flamewall launcher was never meant to exist; fire moving across the map like that is actually an engine bug they couldn't fix and just decided to make into a weapon. The missile weapon sprites were hand-drawn, but the bullet weapons were digitized from real guns (though the MP40 was deactivated). The Ballistikraft, robots and NME boss were digitized from physical models made by Gregor Punchantz; who also did similar model creation for Doom, Doom II and Blood. "Goin Down the Fast Way", was written while Lee Jackson was in a bad mood from an argument with Broussard: to paraphrase Jackson, he basically channeled all his pent-up rage into composing the song -- which ended up being one of the best on the OST. Ok, I'm tapped.
Oh wait, I also have to mention that _according to official canon lore, the Monk Crystals are suppositories..._ ☝

  • @misha5670
    @misha5670 5 місяців тому

We used to call the enemy sprites in ROT "cardboard cutouts.' They definitely looked better than Wolf3D and even in some ways more life l ike than those in Doom, but they also hada certain flat feel to them and just felt paperthin. Keep inmind they had fewer sides compared with Doom too, but more than Wolf3D still. Finally, programing levels for ROT could be tricky. It had a lot of little things that could make it crash or bug out. It was far more difficult to make Doom completely crap itself by comparison.

I always had a hard time understanding this game's appeal. Without a better context, you'd take this as an "old game bad cuz it looks bad" kind of argument but in general, I'm a person who appreciates level design when it comes to its art style. Doom 1&2 may look strange in some areas, but most of the time you can clearly tell that you're in a military base, a city or in hell, despite limitations. While the items were a bit hard to find sometimes, you never truly felt lost.
Wolfenstein 3D may up that challenge a bit more considering each level looks like a literal maze, but even there you could easily guess the room or corridor you were inside was like, a dining hall, a prison, all that.
RotT... It just looks completely inconsistent and chaotic. It feels like the developers threw whatever shit they had at the wall to see what sticks. Despite somewhat clear, easy to guess textures, you're still gonna get lost because everything just feels the same and nonsensical.
Like, I heard this game is wild with its ideas, apparently you can play as a husky and maul people in there. *That* kind of nonsense is cool, but they didn't need to follow it for the level design imo...

I've experienced this game with Sound Blaster / Adlib music first. Current source ports unfortunately don't support it. I was surprised when I heard the MIDI version and on a lot of old games.
Some interesting thing about the music is version 1.2 and 1.3 sound different. 1.3 with the first level sounds like Slipstream 5000 music.
The enforcers will always stunlock on the easiest difficulty with the MP40.
Looks like the port has some other problems like the lightning looks better on some places, but looks wrong because some walls or sprites are fully lit. Shrooms mode is slightly different.
Multiplayer is not really possible with these ports even if it supports it. I've tried with friends and very quickly got a desynced message. IPX with DOSBox worked without any problems.

      @@RubyRangerr Fine… I’ll take the Terriyaki Chicken then…
Great video by the way! I actually tried to set up ROTT using ROTTexpr last month, but it didn’t turn out so well. Funny enough, the day after I bought ROTT, Ludicrous Edition was announced. At least I got it in a sweet bundle with Blake Stone!
See ya in the Heretic video. (Don’t forget about Episode 6!)

For an idea for another analysis video check out a game called CyberMage - there's not much video essays on it on YT, but it's a cult classic from the early DooM System Shock era

@@RubyRangerr I mean there's probably a reason for that and that there is just not enough interesting trivia to talk about, but maybe you'll have some great time playing the game, I'd really recommend playing it at least once. It doesn't have a source port to my knowledge, but runs in DosBox. Just found your chanel, really love your output, cheers man

Not that it's fair to talk s*** about rott.. but as a kid I absolutely loved this game.. but I get what you're saying about the ginormous scale of the labyrinths.. was annoying as the habitual machine gun sound... Although Doom did not have half of the features of Rott it was a little easier to play like wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am, instead of solve our ginormous puzzle... like the difference in between top thing where you pushing forward and yeah you die but you know where you're going, and then the game where your wandering around aimlessly trying to figure out where the hell you're going
