Here’s a thought on the Koreanness of being vegan. My first vegan meals were in the home of South Korean Buddhist monk in Uijeongbu. I was a volunteer LDS (Christian) missionary, and she would have my companion and me over for lunch every Saturday. Traditionally her sect of Buddhism abstains from meat and eggs. She also cooked very traditional dishes that omitted dairy because they just do. She was a phenomenal woman who I will never forget for many reasons, but she’s very vegan and very Korean, and I think those things can go together quite nicely.

Well,to be you and to be a part of you family, I can’t answer to, my feelings, I am black; but I can say I know what it feels like to be separated from your family because of eating styles. Be courageous in whatever you do. And continue on your vegan journey. I found, where I thought there weren’t a lot of black vegans-I thought it was just a white people thing. There are a lot of black vegans. Just like your dad, black men have one of the highest rates of colon and other cancer. So, my reasoning for becoming vegan is of course, health. Read post from Tabitha Brown, Cheap Lazy Vegan-whose also Korean, and Sweet Potato Soul, just to name a few-if you haven’t yet. Keep up the good work!!!

Just a little about me: I’ve been in caregiving facility for the past year now. I discovered I had a brain tumor and have been on a road to recovery. It was hearing about red meat that led me vegan. Why is it a lot of other countries beside that US of A has gone vegan and knows about red meat which happens to be responsible for a lot of other diseases such as type ll diabetes , prostate cancer, hypertension, etc.

Same happens to me... my SIL's excuse was that she didn't know how to cook for me... when I ALWAYS bring something I can eat and share, and have said repeatedly I don't expect any special menu. Even in the unlikely event that there was nothing appropriate on the menu, I could just nuke a simple potato or something! Honestly I think the issue is their cognitive dissonance about eating animals they could never kill and gut themselves, so it's too uncomfortable to face, and I'm the unwanted reminder.

Honestly, as a person who was born and raised in Korea, I think your food already portrays your ethnicity enough as Korean. I can’t agree with those that say your food doesn’t have Koreanness. I mean what is Koreanness tho? I understand that when it comes to food, culture and traditions always follow and you have to follow these traditional recipes to make it more authentic. But I still think food is just a way that we remember our ancestors, special moments that we had with our families, or simply to remember who I am and where I belong to. So please disregard what people say about your food. Just by watching your video makes me feel comfortable as if I’m visiting my auntie’s place in the U.S. Your 유부초밥 looks amazing to me and since there are more trends for vegan in Korea now, I’m sure your recipes will be very helpful. 그리고 목소리가 너무 좋으세요! 💕

The story about not being invited because there was no vegan food for new years is just so sad. My mom would always invite me over on sundays even though I couldn't eat the food and even tried to make something suitable for me as well (german food is mostly not suitable for vegans at all). I would be heartbroken. Really so sad. If she wanted me to be there and I couldn't eat the food, she would warn me, but always invite :(

You can use jackfruit as a meat substitute :)
I make tacos like that every so often. You can get canned jackfruit at Trader Joe’s, Asian grocery stores and even Mexican Stores like Vallarta. Drain the brine, cut off the firm corners. The raw consistency is stringy like chicken once you mash it with a fork. Add your favorite seasonings and cook it on the grill, plus you can also make red or green mole tamales with jackfruit too. I hope this helped :)

Not understanding your comment. I was vegetarian for 25 years (before stores even labeled or sold anything as vegetarian) before becoming vegan for about 9 years now. I never had an issue finding "vegetarian food" in restaurants, grocery stores, and even family potlucks. You can get a grilled cheese sandwich or a cream-based pasta dish anywhere, and if you eat eggs, like, whut? You can pretty much eat anything. Anywhere.
Try going to a family get-together and seeing that the beautiful salad has cheese all over it. That the snacky veggies only have a bacon-mayo dip. That the mashed potatoes have cream and butter. The green beans are swimming in bacon fat. The rice? Cooked in chicken stock, for "flavor".
As Winston Smith above said, being vegan is not a "diet". For me, it's a moral commitment. I do not want animal cruelty in my food. I regret every one of my 25 years as a vegetarian and wish I'd become vegan from the start. Pretty sure dairy animals and egg-layers might think their lives are a little bit harder.

I’ve been vegan for 6 years, and I’ve learned that when people want to be with you, being vegan is not an excuse not to invite you. There are no vegetarians or vegans in my family or close friends group. But they will always invite me for everything, and either ask what they can cook, or just ask me to bring something. When it comes to restaurantes, we always discuss if there’ll be options for me. If not, we make other plans. I’ve met people who did what your parents did to you and those relationships simply didn’t last. Even while dating, I’ve met men who made fun/didn’t care and I’ve met men who made arrangements so that food was never a problem. The hardest part about being vegan for me is other people's reactions to it. I have a cousin who, when he found out I went vegan, he said "what I'm going to do for you, because you're my cousin - whenever I have pork chops, I'm going to have an extra one just for you."
When I told my family, my mother and brother kept questioning why I didn't want to eat meat anymore for weeks, pretty much every time I ate.
I don't find it hard to stay vegan (I've been vegan for 5 years this month), it's the jokes and comments from other people, and how isolated I feel sometimes because other people look down on vegans. I have a sister who invites everyone over for thanksgiving every year, but she never makes anything I can eat, so I don't go. She puts chicken broth in everything, including the vegetables. If I had to make my own food to bring with me, I might as well stay home and cook my own meal.

I always enjoy your chats and cooking they relate to my life stories especially to my vegan daughter. I had four black friends retire in the same year from LADWP, all four within a year had prostrate cancer. All four had helped me learn my trade and to be a better father to my black children, so I held them very dear. My friend Willie Knight filled a discrimination las suit against LADWP just before he retired, he was also pastor in a small church in Watts. He won the law suit with a little help from a friend. Sadly he passed away this last April and I could not see him due to covid. Food looks delish ty for sharing.

I didn't expect to cry on a simple recipe video but I did. The story about your father really moved me. My life was also changed because I watched Forks Over Knives one day 6 years ago and I still to this day admire the doctors that were featured in that movie, I often read their books and watch their lectures on youtube. The biggest sadness of my life was me being educated with all of this information and not being able to help those around me. My parents know all of the health benefits of plants and yet they still eat the same foods as always. I would give anything to keep them healthy for as long as possible but I can't do anything more. This is the first video of yours that I watched and I had to instantly subscribe.

I think the hardest part about the transition is having to learn all new recipes and then having to alter those recipes to your liking. Of course, when you're a child, your parents teach you how to make meals and then you take those meals into your adulthood. Nonetheless, being vegan has broadened my awareness to so many spices and ingredients I've never even heard of. You definitely learn something new everyday

I enjoyed your vlog. I've been wanting to cook Korean food when I found Maangchi's UA-cam. I've also enjoyed eating the Korean dishes I've had. So i decided to learn how to cook Korean food. To my great surprise i made a few great dishes. I loved the stew that had pork belly in it. It had just the right amount of heat. And great flavor. I even cooked it for my colleagues, high school science teachers, it went over well. I was sho happy. THEN BAM !!
I had developed kidney failure, diabetic. I was told i could reverse it if I controlled what I ate. So I tried a detox program that was vegan or whole foods. I dropped my A1C, to nearly hypoglycemic levels, body fat, lower my body mass index, and reversed my kidney level direction. Since then, I had decided to go vegan. It's freaking hard. I never cooked vegan or whole foods. I never shopped for vegan dishes. I really didn't know what to do.
One of the things I did know was that I was going to miss cooking Korean dishes. 😭😭😭 I decided to ask the Korean cook vloggers I followed if they had Korean dishes that was vegan. I didn't want to stop learning about Korean food. They were so accommodating. They began showing lots of vegan Korean vegan dishes. I'm so glad I found you guys. I'm so happy to have found you. I can have my Korean food and be vegan. 💚💚💚💕

Trust me, you're helping lot of people who actually wants to try Korean food but can't because of the meat. I feel food is a way to connect to foreign culture along with the language. It gets hard for vegan and vegetarians to actually try the dishes they want to. But you're helping us satisfy our cravings without any cruelty. No judgement for people who eats meat, I understand that it's part of their culture. But I'm grateful that there are people like you who work so hard on bridging that gap. Im not Korean, I am Mexican, and Muslim, and I wear a full face veil, I am also Vegan. But since I love Korean food So so much and can’t really enjoy it out in restaurants like I used to, I’ve decided to bring Korean restaurant vibes into my home. I got all the stone bibimbap pot, cups, spoons, chopsticks, rice bowls, the clay soup bowls, the table top grill, made the low table, with the cushions, got the stove for my table, made my own side dishes out of clay, and it’s all coming together quite nicely. My husband and daughter also enjoy it and it’s fun to have dinner at home. I went to culinary school and trained as a professional chef for many years but last year I decided to not go back to the restaurant, and since then I’ve been bringing the restaurant home haha :) I loved your story and happy to hear about your Korean vegan journey! I had been waiting for a while for this question to be answered by you, and damn I wish more people saw the negative health impacts that come with consuming dairy and meat. Health issues related to our diet is the most avoidable factor ever.
As a vegan, I too go through the social alienation almost, where I'm not invited to certain gatherings or when my friends want to try out a restaurant that doesn't offer vegan options, I almost prefer getting french fries and a tossed lettuce salad when I go out with non vegans rather than staying at home alone.

For me it was the cruelty and the unnecessary suffering to animals that made me vegan, after which I found out about all the health benefits. Then on a Karmic level it kind of made sense. Everything is living.!
There is nothing wrong with animal products such as dairy, honey and eggs.! Eggs do not turn into baby chickens unless the egg was fertilised meaning the chicken had sex,!
as long as you make it yourself so you can guarantee the animal did not suffer the whole point of being vegetarian is to live a mindful and compassionate lifestyle so you can lower your carbon footprint 👣 and the amount of suffering you inflict into the world 🌍

@@mrkings6639 the thing is even if you're not consuming the animals themselves, the process to get the milk, honey and eggs is really cruel. There are videos on them but it's really heartbreaking so won't to go in detail here but, for exemple to get milk they have to separate the calves from their mother because the milk is actually for the baby, and then the calves will get killed.

I'm Turkish-Dutch and have never really liked meat but consumed large amounts of animal product like milk, cheese, eggs etc. As I grew older and developed IBS with lactose intolerance I started to see improvements in health. Also because I started to eat more plantbased. For the last couple of years I struggle to go completely vegan, and the hardest part is because of community, family and the lack of understanding. I love my family too, and they love me but they don't seem to take my choices seriously, also living with my parents and having dinner together makes it hard. I love your UA-cam channel! Your voice is so soothing, and your vegan story is engaging. I watch this video and get inspired to make my own Yubuchobap. My vegan journey actually began with visits to mostly ethnic restaurants, especially Asian, because they already prepared many dishes with a lot of vegetables. One of my favorite Korean dishes is Soondoo-Boo Chigae. In fact, I used the recipe in your book, The Korean Vegan, to make a pot last night. At first I would have this stew with beef, but as my diet changed I would ask the restaurant for the kimchi version. My guess is that your family appreciates the broad spectrum of vegetables they already use in their recipes. If it hasn’t happened already, I pray that your family will start to invite you to all the events again so that you can bring a vegan dish(es) for everyone to enjoy. After all, it’s about the sharing of community, family, life, and love that is most important.

I’m not vegan, but in my family we tend to eat more plant-based dishes compared to other ppl from the same culture (we’re Bangladeshi). My friends from the same culture thought it was strange, but I learnt later on that my grandparents developed a taste to plant-based dishes during the 1971 independence war in what is now known as Bangladesh. The oppressive military, that would intimidate civilians and villagefolk, used to break into my grandfather’s farm sheds and steal animals even though they had food of their own. My grandmother never complained since it would risk the lives of her loved ones and tried to make do with what was available - she cooked whatever veggie dishes she could to avoid anyone dying from starvation, this continued even after the war and now that both of them are no more my father continues to make his favourite veggie dishes. It continues to be a dark period of his life, but these dishes bring a brightness back. My mother learnt his recipes after I would always talk about his vegetable stir fry as a child (her own recipes were delicious, but my dad’s ones just beat them by a smidge). 🤍

She would try so hard but would buy the heavily processed, already to eat package vegan food & i just couldn't eat it. Unbeknown to me was that not only did my Dad have terminal Cancer but my Mother fell & broke her hip, on getting a new one they found my Mother had end stage cancer too. It's been 4 years since my Mother passed away & two years this month since my Dad passed away. I often think, geez i could of just shut up & eaten what my Mother made but i stuck to it. Like you, once you turn Vegan, people & family fall away but i am really glad that Forks over Knives convinced you to give it your best & voila, Yourself & Husband are powering in more ways than one. At the first Christmas where I was out there, fully publicly vegan & no longer just avoiding foods to avoid the conversation with my family members my brother mocked me and made rude jokes about vegan activists. I grew up Vegetarian eating dairy and seafood. One of my brothers became a meat eater due to the influence of highschool. Meat being included at our family get togethers was accepted but my decision to individually choose to no longer eat any animal products was basically shamed and questioned as extreme. My kids still ate dairy & seafood, my son would eat meat at his Dads. I wasn't pushing my beliefs on anyone else and the way I was treated by my family showed me they didn't actually care about me but more so that they were not people I would ever choose to be friends with. This helped me begin to let go of my attachment to them and gradually overtime I let them all go. Many more things happened but they all just showed me that these people I cherished felt nothing for me but that's ok and I hope they figure out the reason behind their own misery & resolve it. Until then I'm doing great inspite of having only myself to count on for support.

It’s interesting how Vegans all have different answers when asked, why we went vegan.
For me it’s all about the animals, I don’t want to take the life of an innocent animal so I can eat.
Second reason is health . It is lonely though, I live in a northern city in Canada, and don’t have One vegan friend yet. I don’t feel shunned at all but definitely judged lol

If not, then I strongly recommend finding a community. If you’re on Facebook there are dozens of Facebook groups for vegans alone. 💜

I am a Celiac that tries to be low FODMAP. And I have had people stop inviting me out to eat, asking me over. I am always happy to bring my own food with me.

Your husband is a good guy for getting you on the right path - you're awesome for staying on it and learning more about it and becoming such an awesome chef. Much respect. =)

I am new to your channel and I look forward to all your wonderful Korean recipes. I am African-American but I love Korean and Oriental food. Thank you for incorporating your cooking style and recipe along with your storytelling time. I recently became vegan because of a health scare and I can relate to a lot of what you said about being not included in family functions because of your lifestyle. The way I look at it is we have a new family now the vegan family and we should support and encourage others to join even if they don't know it's good for them. Thank you for your service

Thank you so much for sharing more of your story. I’m also Korean American, and I want to go vegan. I did eat a vegan diet for several months when I was in college. While at school (CU Boulder), it was so much easier to eat plant based bc the vegan community is much bigger there. But when I went home, it was really difficult bc of my family and the Korean community at home. Now, my family is more health conscious and is eating less animal products. This video helped me identify some parts of my own story and in what areas I can get some more support. Thank you for your videos. I added a lot of them to my playlists for cooking and vegan resources. ❤️ much love to you! 🥰

This was a wonderful insight, as I did feel similar social anxiety and judgement from my community. Things have changed since, but like you, I do feel I constantly need to prove my allegiance to my cultural heritage.
I loved you appearance on RRP, and I am taking my time digesting your fantastic content before I venture in the Korean ingredient cooking world. You make it very tempting. Btw, soy skin pocket stuffed with tangy rice are one of my favorite Asian from way before I switched to plant based lifestyle. Sending much love and appreciation for you sharing about your dad.

Your beautiful video made me cry. Me and my partner went vegan together 4 years ago. He's Chinese and I'm Pakistani, so big meat eating cultures.
My partner caught covid 13 days ago. He ended up in hospital. He's fighting for his life right now because of a zoonotic disease. Because people won't wake up to the destruction our appetite for somebody's flesh.

yes our abuse of innocent animals by not just billions and trillions (including sea animals) every year is what's really causing these zoonotic diseases.... terrible indeed.. Hope your partner got well and is doing fine 🙏

Although the reason behind u being a vegan is sad to listen to, im happy and proud to see that there is someone who can educate many of us here about how we can be a vegan or vegetarian and still enjoying food. Regardless how people said about you not be korean, you know u make korean dishes more accessible to vegetarians and other people. Its healthier too... Love to try out your recipes. Thank u Joanne. I really mean it.

What a sweet story, I change for my health 7 years ago. Felt soreness 2 inches below my belly button when I pushed in. I new I was at the age where things would start falling off my body (so to speak) and wasn't having it! I juice 4 cups a day 5 days a week and that helps immensely. You can change ANY carnivorous meal into a vegan meal and make it taste better! Thank you for your channel!

5:18 I also went vegan after my dad's health continued to decline. The day my dad got diagnosed with prostate cancer weighed so heavily on me, but thankfully, it was slow growing. He lived a few more years before his Alzheimer's ravaged him. One of the regrets I had was not insisting that he try a vegan diet back in 2012, but I did not fully go vegan until 2017 as it had been challenging to go vegan when no one in my family was in favor of it. Someone else close to me, who wasn't even vegan back then, did encourage me, though, so I am grateful for that.

I am a Bengali from India and I am a vegetarian as I still consume dairy products. I can relate to every word of your story as an authentic Bengali can NEVER think of NOT having meat. So eventually everyone questions whether I am really a Bengali or not to the extent of being ridiculed cruelly at a group lunch or dinner. However the point is we should eat whatever makes us feel good and not discriminate anyone.
