    Regarding Romans 6, I think the emphasis of Paul -- in connection to sanctification -- was on actual union with Christ in His death, burial, resurrection and not on water baptism. Perhaps Dr. White was emphasizing the water baptism there too much.

    • @zacdredge3859
      @zacdredge3859 Рік тому

      So Paul actually describes all of these things as taking place in relation to water Baptism; so no, it's not emphasising too much to acknowledge the fact that the Roman church was Baptised into Christs death by full immersion(the sign of Jonah) so they might share in his resurrection.
      As Verse 4 puts it : *We were buried, therefore, with him through Baptism into death, so just as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory the Father, so shall we also walk in the newness of life...*
      Note that burial is necessary for the new life we are to walk in. I don't see how you square that with sprinkling practice. You can say the emphasis of Paul's teaching is the effects of Baptism, sure enough, but you can't separate that from the clear description Paul gives.

    I’m a presby joining a reformed baptist church. It really ticks me off that both sides can’t overlook this issue and unite. (Not ignore it, but decide to not let it divide us).

      Opposite way for me. No division within the local body over it, yet. Matters more to me that they're faithful to the word. I have no interest in joining a baptist church that's bowed the knee to covid cult, CRT, etc. "Weightier matters of the law" comes to mind

    • @oracleoftroy
      @oracleoftroy 2 роки тому

      I think it is harder for the Baptist side to unite over this difference.
      If a Baptist is in a Reformed Church and they are convinced in credo baptism, the church ought to make their case, but it isn't quite so big a deal if they leave it to a matter of conscience. If a Reformed Christian is in a Baptist church and is convinced that their newborn are covenant members and wants them baptized even after the church make its case, it would be really awkward for that pastor to baptize the infant, and awkward to bring the child to a different church just to baptize them.
      I've heard of a few pastors that would do it, but usually I hear of it because of how scandalized other baptists feel about it.

    they baptised all households in acts - the key is that children were included in the old testament through circimcision on the 8th day - paul says in galatians baptism now replaces circumcision as the entree into the new covenant - remember the new testament is not a rejection or an abandonment if the old but a fullfillment or flowering of the old - the better question is this - if children were included in the old covenent where in the new testament does it say now they aren't? it doesnt

      So in case you weren't aware all genuine believers are given new birth through the Holy Spirit; this is how one becomes a Christian. So as Baptists we're not saying that circumcision has no relationship to Baptism, but we *are* saying that to the extent this is analogical it is only so in relation to the new birth; the very one that Nicodemus satirized but Jesus insisted upon. God bless.

      @@lindsaybarlow7946 I believe everything the Bible says about Jesus. To include that He is God's word, Lord, the Christ, etc.
      What I do not fully understand is why those on the internet would said I am not in Christ for not believing extra biblical teachings.
      For example John 8:58 Jesus says before Abraham ἐγὼεἰμί (I am). Simply placing himself as existing before and after Abraham thus elevating His status over Abraham.
      Pastors will preach that this means Jesus proclaimed to be God using code or analogy or metaphor. But I just don't see it in the scripture.
      Since Jesus is God's word He would have to therefore exist before Abraham. Where I get genuinely confused is how or why the word of God must therefore be God.
      I'm not saying it's impossible and I used to proclaim it so. I just lost that proclamation as I study more intentionally to understand the Bible.

      Except that that they didn't!
      The _Didache_ (aka _The Lord's Teaching Through the Twelve Apostles to the Nations,_ c.90-150, 7:1-4), for example, reserved baptism for persons old enough to have received instruction and to have fasted for at least the day before.
      Similarly, Justin Martyr (c.100-c.165) viewed baptism as rendering the Christian "spiritually regenerated as new-born babes" ( _First Apology_ 34) and restricted it to those who "are persuaded and believe that what we teach and say is true, and undertake to be able to live accordingly, are instructed to pray and to entreat God with fasting, for the remission of their sins" acquired when they were "brought up in bad habits and wicked training" ( _First Apology_ 61).
      Even the _Apostolic Constitutions_ (c.375-380) restricted to those who had fasted and received instruction beforehand (7.2.22, 7.3.34). The only mention of paedobaptism was in the context of a criticism of those who would delay their own baptism till they were approaching death (so as to avoid compromising the perceived efficacy of their baptism) but would hypocritically baptize their infants, thus denying those infants the same opportunity (6.3.15).
