I scanned all of my children’s special art work, ribbons, certificates and awards into my computer, then made a hardback photo book for each of them. I added their pictures from the first day of school, plays, concerts and special events. I eliminated huge storage boxes into easy to look at acid free books. They love them!
Done this for three adult daughters. Gave it to them as a gift when they got married. Made them cry. They didn't know I had treasured so much of their childhood. Loved it!
Ara Carmenates it was super organized, but my mom gave me a box of all the stuff she saved from my younger years and gave it to me when I saw her again after I moved away. I cried. It was really special! I recommend doing this for your children!
This is soooo helpful! It was hard to decide what to keep for my daughter. She is 5 and makes something for me almost daily. I'm definitely going to do this. Thanks for sharing!
overwhelming is an understatement, its daunting! Ive have the memory box for really special items for my boys but its conquering my stuff lol... decluttering here we come
This is EXACTLY what I do! I always talk about a memory box! It definitely is a "HIGHLIGHT REEL" and you only keep things that you and your kids (I have two boys also) think are the absolute favorites:) I also have a DIY art wall (made with ribbon and command hooks) that we have in our house to "display" their artwork, tests, quizzes, etc. the week they bring them home. Each week we add and take away and say goodbye to different creations, but they feel appreciated and it keeps my counter tops clear! I did a video on the art wall. I think it is the best thing and is almost free to make! Clutter makes me crazy and kids come with a lot of stuff --especially from school!!! You are a great mom! LOVE IT!!! xoxo
Another idea with artwork and papers is take a picture of them on a white background and turn it into a book if you didn't want to keep it all in a bin!
Yes! When I cleaned out my house for moving, I had so much trouble parting with memory-filled items! It was almost painful to get rid of them. But you learn you can't keep everything or it overruns your life. So, my friend suggested it, and I went and took lots of pictures of everything that meant something to me. As many as made me feel better. I'd rather it take up digital space than physical. Then, when I had plenty, and felt better that I could look back on them, I let go of the item. Those pictures really helped a lot! =) I like the book idea you give too. One of these days I might take them all and do so. =)
This couldn't have been more perfectly timed for me! My daughter started kindergarten and I'm already overwhelmed with the amount of paper she brings home everyday. Thank you!
Charmagner when my kiddo started kindergarten I kept everything for the first quarter and was quickly overwhelmed! Soon, everything he brought home would get looked at and then thrown in the trash. That didn't when either. Eventually we decided together at the end of the year which things meant something to him, which ones meant something to me and then we could throw everything else away. I was keeping each year in a small plastic bin for every year, but by the time he's finishing high school I'll have twelve bins. I like the idea of a hanging folder tote and a memory bin better.
Thanks, this is a helpful alternative to scanning everything and losing the human touch of holding the meaningful document in your hands (definitely helpful in jogging the memory better).
This is a great idea- love the rule of keeping only highlights of each year. My MIL saved every major report card, certificate, school picture, and accomplishment for my husband from birth through law school. At our wedding she presented the large binder to me complete with vaccination record. It was very sweet and also a nice way of saying "he's your responsibility now!"
My son is 33. I wish I saw this video years ago. When I moved, I had to urge big time. I have a tote bag of his stuff that I thought I would want to keep. Love this idea and I saw clear hanging file bin at Staples yesterday. I am going back to get it today. Thank you for sharing.
I did this for my 4 kids, two small totes each & when they moved out the totes went with them. It warms my heart when they look through them & reminisce with the biggest smiles on their faces❤️ Now I just have to condense my FIVE LARGE TOTES of my things😩😤 However I love that I still have my Easy Bake Oven to share w/ my granddaughters❤️
I am on a Katherine marathon! I swear u have thought of everything. My kid started kindergarten! She also did a massive collection of her art during the pandemic too I don’t know what to do with them! Thank you!!!!
I love listening to your voice and the way you speak!!! it's soothing to my ears lol 🤗 love how you always remind me not to hoarder 🙌 OMG and Carson and Owen are extremely adorable. May the Lord bless you and your family 🙏
Love it! I cringed when my husband started talking about saving things for the kids/grandkids. With this we can limit it to what fits in the memory box.
Thank uou so much for this. I am decluttering and trying to figure out what to keep. God bless you and your family and wishing you all of the best in 2022.
I needed this video so much. I have a daughter in her second year of preschool and I felt the need to keep everything she brought home from school. Needless to say, halfway through the second year the amount of artwork we have saved has become overwhelming. You provided some wonderful tips for how much to keep and how to store it efficiently. Thank you!
I have been doing one of these for a couple years. It was the best thing ever! I also include my kids Dr visit milestones, growth chart etc. Just the fun stuff from the visit. oh and the "I don't have a cavity!" pictures our dentist takes. they're always hilarious!
Oh wow!!!! I can't tell you how much this is needed in my life!! With six kids, plus my own school boxes of "stuff" I need this system so badly!!! I love these ideas, and plan to implement them immediately!! It will take me months to go thru all this, though, LOL!
omgosh this is so perfect. i too am (was) really sentimental. i saved EVERYTHING! i saved all of my bad grade math tests (which was most of them) with the intention of getting them all right in the future. that's actually really sad. i saw them after them being in storage for many years with my mother and i thought "omg why am i saving this?" and i still couldn't get the math answers right.. hahahaha. i mean i literally had big moving boxes full of stuff. it was hard but i was finally able to purge a lot of it. i even have a book that was my first writing book.. when we learned to write. i love the idea of categorizing by school year. journals... had to keep. and yes isn't it a trip to see how clothes styles just cycle. that's actually why i hate throwing clothes away. as soon as i got rid of all my super bell, hip hugging jeans, they were back! and peasant tops... oh well. i loved Carson's art work. it's very happy and made me smile. thanks for another great video!
Great idea and it's so hard to figure out what to keep and what to get rid of. I actually ended up using every single report, awards and some art work for my kids graduation parties and displayed them all along with special photos for each year of school. It was really fun going through them and setting them up for the parties. The girls loved being able to look back at them all and share stories that they remembered, it was so special to be able to do that with them. Tyfs
I have gone through my stuff from high school a few times over the years and have purged things. it feels good! I'm buying a home this year so I'm going to go through my stuff again before moving in. I don't want to move in junk so this video is right on time! Thanks! ❤
I have been doing this for many years now and love it!!! I put all the same items as you and also add different pictures from through out the year of them with their friends at school field trips, parties and various events. Also, if they have to make a big project I will snap a pic of it and later add the final graded paper with it. My oldest is now in 6th and I have been doing this since she was in Kindergarten. Her bin is full but I have started a second that will go through Jr high and High school. I think all the pics will come in hand their senior year and will be fun.
Great idea! Love that you organized it by school year with the photo of the first day of school. Limiting the amount of things per year and the amount of boxes per child also great.
To quote Becky Higgins, "Begin with the end in mind"...... and if you have a hard time letting go of things, you can always take photos of kids artwork and put TONS of that on a CD, DVD, or flash USB stick.
One project that I actually worked on in high school was a scrapbook full of different writings and essays I've done over the years (plus some pictures of me with my family and friends), so that right there gives me enough to look back on. All the other papers I've written I recycled :)
I just did this with our kids rooms! (DH and I have 5 boys combined that lived with their other parents) We used to keep a room just for them...decorated with their special things. They are all grown and gone now and we're moving, so it was time to purge. I framed a few special art pieces they had made over the years and vowed to only keep 1 Tupperware box of their special things and things they might want later as they got settled in their new places. It helped me be reminded of the great times, but narrow it down to those moments I truly remember! It worked perfectly!
I did that with my kids. Some of the artwork and awards I made into a scrapbook. Eventually I weeded it down to 1 binder per kid. Love to pull it out once in a while!
i use a big art portafolio to store each of my twins school art. the ones I do not want I frame and mail to family ie: grandmas, aunts, close friends. At times we go to visit family and we'll often find the twin's art work hanging in their homes. Super special!
This is sooo timely for me! I'm gearing up to move across the country and have a TON of memorabilia. My struggle is that, currently, I have no one that I am saving these things for. My son isn't really into this stuff and doesn't have kids yet. However, I know how much I love looking at family members' memorabilia and hope that at some point in the future I will have a daughter-in-law/grandkid or two who will love this stuff the way I love other people's stuff. The struggle is so real! Thank you for a great system that gives me some boundaries to shoot for!!
Just what I NEEDED ! That floor of papers is my son's pile of school stuff for the past 3 yrs that I am going thru now! I will definitely be doing this over the weekend, what great tips!!
i totally needed this, i was already beginning to get overwhelmed with kids stuff and my daughter and son are barely in preschool. love all your ideas and vids!
Thank you, this video is perfect for my daughter she is in pre-k this year. And I needed a good way not to clutter up my house but make sure she doesn't feel overwhelmed when she grows up and looks back on her memories from school. I love your videos and want to do something about my disarray of stuff it is hard to organize the disorganized mess.
We were in the military for a children's childhood. We moved frequently and were limited by weight how much we could ship. Each of my children got a trunk. I kept the clothing they wore home from the hospital, a handmade quilt my grandmother made them, their first shoes, first ornament, and favorite stuffed animal. This left them lots of room to put keepsakes. It surprised me how little they kept themselves when they became the keeper of their trunks.
Just In Time, Thank You!!! I was literally searching through Pinterest this morning looking for ideas to do this. Our son is in Pre-School now, and I am looking for a way to preserve the special items he brings home from school, without hoarding everything. This is a great system. Now you've inspired me to purge my own childhood mementos as well. Thank you for posting!
A friend of mine who has all adult kids now cleaned out her garage filled with their childhood stuff and she took pictures of everything that was special before getting rid of it and she made memory books with shutterfly for each of her kids with their own special projects and favorite toys etc. I thought that was a really great idea. I might do that and get rid of the two big boxes full of stuff I kept for my kids.
I noticed the dates you had on stuff and we're the same age. I love your channel and I have used tips and tricks you taught me and they work! You're my organizational idol.
Your kids are adorable! I have a 3 month old and I'm so excited to do this! I'm saving my favorite outfits of hers so that I can give them to a quilt maker and we can have a beautiful memory of her first year that we will USE! 😍
My mom saved everything. I mean everything. Every piece of homework, every award. Even our orientation packets and every newsletter from every school year. I get the joy of having to go through it now. It's been fun for the most part, condensing so needs to happen
Oh my!!!! This is exactly what I need to do!! Thank you soo much for the amazing ideas. My husband and I are huge fans of your channel. You have helped us soo much. I am feeling better getting organized. Thanks again👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😃😃😃😊😁😁
I love this! My parents have bins upon bins filled to the top with papers from all my years in their home. I'm dreading the day they hand them over to me. I don't want that for my kids so I will definitely be implementing this!
Cracking up at the participant ribbons. LOL!!! Awesome tips too! I have a 20 year old, and I can tell you that editing down through the years help so much!
Thank you so much for the inspiration! I have a lot of memories saved up from high school but after watching this, I think I need to go through and organize them!
I did this for my adult sons when we move from the family home to a new one. Then we gave them their own boxes to keep track of. It also included their special ornaments from childhood. I would have kept all the items but we are older and downsizing. Better they have those items to show their children than to sit and rot in a musty garage.
This is an awesome idea! You are the organizational queen! My daughter is just a baby but I need to implement a system like this from the beginning. Thanks!
Great ideas 👍 Dear moms, you will want to look at your child’s artwork when they are in their 30’s+. Don’t throw it all away and scan, it’s not the same. I personally only kept the good stuff 😉
I swear we are of the same mind Kathryn! LOL I have a hanging folder for each child's stuff throughout the year that I think might 'make-the-cut'. Then I go through it at the end of the year and purge down to those things that I really want to keep. Then we start over for the next year. I also have a 3-Ring Binder for each child that I have sheet protectors and a coin sleeve in. This is what we will display at their graduation. The coin sleeves work well for track medals, letter pins, etc. And I know Carson is only a toddler, but a great tip I was given when my daughter started high school was to keep a spreadsheet of her activities/awards each year. I do this on Google Docs, so I can access from my phone and type stuff in as it happens (like when my daughter received an outstanding performer award at State One Act). This REALLY helps when applying for scholarships and just looking back on all that your child has done during their high school career without having to 'dig the box out'. Thanks for all the tips!
omg, I started doing this yesterday becus i notice pile had grown to big with 4 kids n I saw this video today. it was meant to b. N u were not lying is very overwhelming. I feel like it's going to take me forever. thanks u always have great ideas
Hi Kathryn i just want to say i absolutely love this idea! i do not have kids but i have a niece who comes over at my place every weekend & i have been looking for something like this to start putting her drawings, crafts & math practice in! this hit the jackpot! i love your videos all of them they are so super helpful! thank you so much for sharing this!!
This is so sweet....Kathryn, your mom probably couldn't part with any of those items she saved for you:)) It's a mom thing. It's not easy to part with our kid's artwork. Also, made sure I purchased a yearbook (grades k-12) for both of my kids. I really enjoy looking back on mine and I knew they would too!
Kathryn, Thanks so much for this idea. I like you have some of my school stuff, journals from even my first IMPORTANT job, ( Not the fast food type places, but my being a Nurse's assistant. BUT I do have my boy's stuff from all 13 years of their schooling, and now I have 2 step- granddaughters and 1 grandson who's all in school. and I have 2 grandson's and getting my FIRST granddaughter ( The 1st girl in my family in over 17 years, hubby's family in over 21 years......can you say SPOILED ? ) so I now know what to do with the special thing's, Skylar my oldest step granddaughter brings nana a new picture every time she come's to my house, and Jayden my grandson is always in the local newspaper for straight A's, or projects etc. so now I'll have a system for everyone's school memories THANK'S TO YOU ! I always LOVE all your projects and ideals ! Thanks for sharing them with us !
This is a wonderful idea. I feel like every time I go to my parents, they give me another 2 boxes of my childhood stuff to go through. They did it from a place of love (and I love them for that), but the task of shifting through everything became a burden. I will use this system the day I'll have children of my own.
I love this!! I have the biggest problem getting rid of things because I am so sentimental, but I also hate clutter, so it's always a toss up. My oldest is in preschool, and at the beginning of the year, I was keeping everything. I quickly found that it was going to take over our home if I did, so I started getting rid of the less important things. This looks like a great system to put in place!
omg....this helps a lot. I have a ton of my children's memorabilia and have boxes for them. Sometimes its just so hard to purge. I want to keep everything. Thanks a bunch. Now time to tackle 😩
You have no idea how much this helped me!!!! I'm in the process of sorting through all the stuff my parents saved for me (overwhelming) and trying to figure out a better system for my son... who is now in grade 2 and I already have 4 overflowing large accordion file folders for 😬(1 for j/k, s/k, grade 1 & grade 2)🙈 ugh-too much! So thank you!!!🙏🏻👌🏻
This video is just what I need! I really want to declutter some things I have too. I have so many cards and pictures from my former students and I hate to get rid of anything, but I also don't want a ton of clutter. I've fallen into the trap of keeping a lot of cards from different holidays as well. I love the idea of a memory box for each child's year of school!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO!!! My daughter is almost 7 and my son is 14 months and before I had my son I would save every..single..thing my daughter did or made in school and it got to be overwhelming by the end of kindergarten lol because pre school and kindergarten she made so many art projects and crafts and now that my son is born he hasn't made anything yet but I know very soon he will be and I can't keep everything and I was so unsure of what to keep... this video was so so very helpful thank you and thank you for saying how many of each I should keep and containers that work best!! best video I have watched in forever lol. so helpful thank you!!! I hope you have a wonderful weekend take care xoxo-Delia

It wasn't*
Great idea❤️
This is soooo helpful! It was hard to decide what to keep for my daughter. She is 5 and makes something for me almost daily. I'm definitely going to do this. Thanks for sharing!
Marriage & Motherhood ha! Right?? They crank them out.

Patty K awesome!! Yes, I wanted to get this video up as I know there are soooo many good sales right now. Hope you get a deal!
Very helpful! Thank you. I too am overwhelmed by things I’ve saved.
Great ideas. I have found the older I get, the less stuff I care to keep.
Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you. Now I have guideline to go through all of those boxes of my children's school work. This was a very helpful video.

Great idea! Love that you organized it by school year with the photo of the first day of school. Limiting the amount of things per year and the amount of boxes per child also great.
Diana Pulido hehe, Carson cranks out the art Energizer Bunny style so we really have to!
To quote Becky Higgins, "Begin with the end in mind"...... and if you have a hard time letting go of things, you can always take photos of kids artwork and put TONS of that on a CD, DVD, or flash USB stick.

you read my mind. i bought 2 of those boxes for my kids and was ready to start when i saw this . ahhhhhhhhh perfect
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I have six little ones and drowning in paper work! This will be so helpful. I excited to get started.

I did that with my kids. Some of the artwork and awards I made into a scrapbook. Eventually I weeded it down to 1 binder per kid. Love to pull it out once in a while!
just started watching your videos and they are amazing! I love that they are short and to the point! Thank you!

Victoria Rojas I love the idea of mailing things!!
My kids love going to relative's homes, only to find their art displayed. They feel extra special😊
Much needed video! I have so much stuff from oldest child and had no clue how to organized it!

love it I'm just getting started on the grandchildren GOD BLESS YOU TOO!!!!....THANKS FOR THE TIPS
Great ideas! Thank you for sharing as always. GOD bless 😇
Thank you, this video is perfect for my daughter she is in pre-k this year. Just what I need to see mommy of 3 over here so great idea got 2 in preschool

Great quick -perfect length- video that shows me not to sweat the amount of stuff... I will try this; thank you!
Excellent tips. I keep my children's memorabilia but it was not organized. Love how you created a memory box.

Super ideas - thank you Kathryn!
Your kids are adorable! I have a 3 month old and I'm so excited to do this! I'm saving my favorite outfits of hers so that I can give them to a quilt maker and we can have a beautiful memory of her first year that we will USE! 😍
Lo C LOOOOVE this!!!!!
Marital Glue yes. Bins upon bins. That was my story too!! Just so so much!! Felt great to go through and find the things that really matter.
You go girl! You just gave me sooooo much motivation. Literally
AWESOME ideas! Thank you for sharing!
Cracking up at the participant ribbons. LOL!!! Awesome tips too! I have a 20 year old, and I can tell you that editing down through the years help so much!
Your video is great! Thank you so much for the concise explanation of what and how to preserve things!
God bless you too! Love your channel and videos.
Great idea with the totes and folders!
This is an awesome idea! You are the organizational queen! My daughter is just a baby but I need to implement a system like this from the beginning. Thanks!
My Blissful Home they start making art sooner than you think!! Goes by so fast!! 😭
Awww your baby is cute!
This is VERY helpful especially since I bought my memory box this morning! Perfect timing😁🙌🏼 I'm super excited to organize my memory box🤗🎉
Great ideas 👍 Dear moms, you will want to look at your child’s artwork when they are in their 30’s+. Don’t throw it all away and scan, it’s not the same. I personally only kept the good stuff 😉
I so needed this !!! My kids school work just piles up so fast !
This definitely came at the right time for me
I really love this idea and cant wait to do this with my kids!
Jill Bauer awesome! Thanks for the tips and that's so good to know about medal storage!!
DoItOnaDime...u bet. I have to use a little tape on the back where u put them in, so they don't fall back out, but it works really well otherwise.
Loveeeee this video! I get so overwhelmed with all of my memory stuff!!!
Lol you definitely can end up collecting a lot of things. these are great tips and it looks very nicely organized!
This is great! My youngest moved to go to college this week, and I'm sorting through a bunch of memories.
thank you for sharing . I was looking for a way to organize my child's art work .I love watching your videos . You give a lot of inspiration .
This is exactly was I was needing! I have so much stuff from my daughter and wasn't sure how to organize it. Thank you so much!
Stepfanie Koch I'm so glad it was helpful! 💕
omg, I started doing this yesterday becus i notice pile had grown to big with 4 kids n I saw this video today. it was meant to b.
I love your videos! I'm going through my own school stuff right now so great timing. Thanks!
Nam-Anh Nguyen good luck!!
I have been trying to figure out an idea for saving the kiddos stuff from school. This is perfect.
Great ideas! Thank you!
Those got milk ads were the coolest! I miss those!
Mary Summers I used to collect them and I made a giant collage I taped to the wall (my poor mom haha!!)
Thank you so much! My 5yr old's activities were pilling up everywhere. This is such a great idea!
This is a great idea! Definitely want to implement this for my family of 5! Thank you for Sharing!
Awesome video as always! I do have a memory box for each of my child too. 🙌🏼
I absolutely love your videos great content and straight to the point. I'm Definitely going to do this thank you! 😊
I love this video. Your videos makes me want to get so organized!!
So thank you!!!🙏🏻👌🏻
Love this idea!! Thanks for sharing 😊
This video had a "what's up moms" vibe to it. I liked the tips and the esthetic.
Love that idea Kathryn! I definitely want to create a memory box for my 16 months old niece. So inspired!
I love this idea! Currently, we're using a filing cabinet but I think I like using the little file boxes better!!
