  • U.S. Civil War amputations were typically done under anesthesia consisting of Ether and/or Chloroform. This gave the surgeon about ten to fifteen minutes to perform the procedure.
No soldier wanted an amputation. But often times it was either an amputation or you died. And with the advent of the mini ball, there were significantly more limb injuries that required amputation.
Death after amputation was usually the result of a post op infection. These tools were not sanitized after each procedure. The instruments often times had wood handles. They may have been washed but that was typically the extent of their cleaning. Bacterial contamination was not understood as it is today.
This video is a review of my own personal kit. There is a story of an identical kit that was used throughout the entire U.S. Civil War here: www.battlefields.org/learn/ar...
I would also encourage you to visit the website of Dr. Douglas Arbittier who many, including myself, consider the authority on antique medical instrumentation.

Don't you need a bottle of whiskey to go with that?

Omg is this a fake “Misery” background for amputation talk? lol. The amputation kit, the cozy cabin? I found myself getting so sick in the stomach watching this whole thing.
