+supernova1976 I know right, it's like 1000x better than what a car salesman would tell you. :)) These kind of vidoes shows people on how much work, and simply the thought process engineers and designers go through just to give you a quality product. Makes you appreciate the little things. Thanks for the vid TFL.
I don't know how Nathan felt but this Mazda guy was by far the coolest factory person ever! He actually gave You real information about the car instead of the usual car manufacturer marketing person's "Our cars are the best cars, buy them!" Thumbs up for them!
+Blake Swan From the sound of it, it seems like he drives a Mazda too which is a good thing. You can feel his passion for the brand (it was on wrong reply lol)
+Blake Swan I've watched his informative presentations ever since Skyactiv came out a few years ago. The only issue is his "speech disfluency", saying a lot of "huh", "uh", "erm", "um". But looks like the cold weather seems to help with that, and also me watching on 1.5 speed ;)
Interior looks great. Shopping around for family cars, I did not even consider Mazda until I saw this video. Now, looks like I might be waiting until this summer to check this car out!
owned a 2017 cx-9 GT for about 6 months and due to an unfortunate, faultless collision, i now own a 2019 GT. have to say that mazda nailed the engine in this generation and specifically the transmission on the 2019. so responsive and excellent power in the low rpm range. the fuel mileage is *insanity*. regularly getting low 8L/100km on longer drives and have even gotten as good as 7.5L/100km, verified with trip odometer/gas receipt math which shows the built-in "fuel economy" app is quite honest. this is my wife's daily driver. she is coming from a 2013 honda fit sport and this 4000lb+ monster is doing better on highway cruises, even on winter rubber. absolutely astounding.
This is the reason why I love Mazda! They love their cars and you can see how passionate they are with their product and the attention to detail they put into their product. They have some of the best designed cars in the market (Mazda 6 & this one esp.) and their driving dynamics is unparalleled. Even though they are smaller in size, in terms of quality and end product, they are in a class of their own.
One of the best reviews I have ever watched AND listened to. This guy sounds like he was on the ground floor of research and development. Great job. Price/ Zero to 60?
Totally agree with you. We test drove a CX5. Still had other vehicles on our list to test drive for the day. While waiting for the salesperson to grab us a business card the manager came out for the hard sell. We dropped the CX5 from our list immediately. It's not the 80's. The hard sell is an immediate turn off.
+Jonathan Washington It is sad. The nearest Mazda dealer for me is like an hour's drive on the interstate away and the one time I was able to visit it was getting too dark to look at the cars. They were a professional bunch for a car dealer though by following up with me all without being pushy. Too bad I can't say the same about the other ubiquitous brands dealers.
+Ivan Vojt hey I'm from Loma Linda and I had to go all the way to Tustin Mazda to buy it from a good dealer. riverside turned me off so bad, i didn't bother going to redlands.
I have talking to my friends and family about how Mazda feels like the only company to build cars made for the driver...and this gentleman just confirmed everything I have been saying. Hopefully everyone else takes notes and starts tailoring cars for drivers.
I like the always up screen. Less to break. I also like the control knob with tactile feedback. After a while You barely have to look at the screen. Like texting on old phones.
+supernova1976 That is how all cars are. My car has a large strip of real aluminum that spans the dash, but if you go to the parts department, it's 2 pieces. A large plastic strip in that shape and a real aluminum sticker the thickness of a piece of paper. On the other hand it would just be heavy and expensive to carve these parts out of a block of wood or aluminum.
Mazda knows how to engineer cars that drivers want. It sold me how he explained about the engine cooler makes fuel efficient in real world and not on paper. Mazda is so underrated. Mazda makes cars fun to drive, simple design yet elegant, affordable, good fuel economy. I hope they do better because their passion in making cars are what most manufactures lacks.
Dave Coleman, the Mazda Vehicle Development Engineer/presenter really dig it. Hope every car maker's presenter is like him. You really raised the bar man, keep it up!👍
Kia optima looks old like an Avalon, and Lexus looks over designed. IS350 tail light looks good though. Mazda new line ups have great subtlety in design and nice proportion.
That interior is gorgeous. Mazda competes price-wise with Chevrolet, Ford, and Toyota, but their interiors are BMW and Audi level. One of the biggest mysteries is why Mazda is not outselling their competitors.
also who is this guy and he needs to get his own channel. he comes across as the technical guy but in reality he is an incredibly strong salesman for the brand.
+AChopra I think they'll do a whole new setup for the new Speed3/ Speed6, not this exact configuration. Sports cars must be at least a little revvy. This means some new internals, new turbos, new tune. Skyactiv philosophy means "purpose built from the ground up". So they'll probably pick up the basic Skyactive 2.5 N/A block again and go from there.
ZOOM ZOOM! I love what Mazda has been doing as of late. First of all, I finally listen to a company guy that actually knows his stuff, explains it properly, PLUS is so enthusiastic about his product. Ford, Nissan, Audi, even BMW, YOU HAVE A LOT to LEARN from this guy. Your stiffy walking PR recorders simply don't cut it. Second, we urgently, desperately, need this engine in the 6 and or the 3!!! Beef it up to 250-280 and you'll put back the Z into the OOM, which has gone missing for a few years now. I am talking in Mexico which actually has a huge follower base for Mazda. I have not bought a new Mazda cause it's performance is simply not up to par with the car's suspension, feel, design and expectations. Give me 280 hp, I am game! Third, thanks TFL (again) i love your vids!
Sweet, Dave Coleman. I loved his articles from when he wrote for "Sport Compact Car" magazine. Dave is a big reason I know as much as I do about cars today!!!! It is really to bad SCC was killed off by their publishing company. It was and still is my favorite car magazine.
I agree with many comments here the Mazda rep is very good and has the rare ability to know what he is talking about and give a simple explanation of a mechanical process. Although the CX9 is too large for my needs I wish this motor was in the CX5 or CX3 as that would be a sweet ride.
Okay, **THIS** is why I love Mazda. Look at the amount of attention to detail that has been lavished all over the car inside and out. The overall look is very tightly integrated, cohesive, premium (almost luxurious) and simple - no fiddly touchscreens to mess with. These top notch explanations for the engine and drivetrain can only come from someone as knowledgeable as Dave Coleman, aka the Mazda god and father of the Mazdaspeed lineup. Speaking of Mazdaspeed.... Mazda, PLEASE get cracking on some details about the next Mazdaspeed 3. Is it going to have an AWD system? There is certainly room for it. Will it have a 2.0 or 2.5L turbo engine, how much power, what does it look like, etc??? My 2010 Mazdaspeed 3 is still serving me well and drives beautifully, and it is plenty fast. The thought of replacing this with an upgraded version with more power, more premium stuff, more technology, better styling inside and out, better fuel economy is a nice one. Come on Mazda!
I've test drove pretty much every 3-row suv in the last couple of weeks, CX-9 Pro's: looks awesome and fun to drive around town compared to the other 3-row suv's, great gas mileage, heads up display (HUD), moving headlights Con's: the seats are a bit narrow but they're not uncomfortable like the Honda Pilot, you can't see the HUD if you're a taller driver, bad 3rd headroom and legroom, smallest cargo space behind the 3rd row in the class, noticeable turbo lag, power is not uniform after the turbo kicks in - it's like this: you put you foot in it.... turbo lag then surge of power ... then that power dies away - this makes it a great stop light/stop sign racer in the city, for the price worst towing capacity: not a big deal if you just going to pull some atvs or jet skis but a bigger boat or camper is out of the question
Mazda shares my exact opinion on touch screens and physical buttons. A physical knob in the center console where your hand naturally rests is simply best.
This car is amazing, beautiful and technicaly good. The commercial guy is full of knowledge and very clear in his explanation, very great and interesting !
That MAZDA guy is a superb speaker. He explains things in a way that it's understandable, without dumbing it down or over complicating the topic. I'm going to trade my wife's 2022 MINI Countryman in on either a 22-23 Signature or Grand Touring CX-9 in the coming months.
Wow what a great video. I was hooked from beginning to end. Extremely informative from this Mazda employee. It is an honest person talking in plain English making sense.I think I am sold on this car even if we don't have a release date for Australia yet. Thanks
Looking forward to video reviews of the cx-9 where they let you drive it. At least they didn't use that 9 speed transmission that honda put in the new pilot that everyone complains about.
I think that it's a pretty clever approach for a family vehicle, designing around torque instead of horsepower. Looks pretty good, too! Just notably bigger than I would want for a vehicle.
Assuming with the EGR cooling, there's a filter? Also is there's multi-injection? Gunky intake were a problem in MS6 engines with EGR and direct-injection.
+everythingdiy Never going to happen at least for the next few years! They probably have only one engine plant for this new engine and Mazda want to sell 50K CX-9 a year! Plus, it would hurt sales of the other models if they had the MazdaSpeed 3 or 6!
+everythingdiy I imagine that it will trickle down to other models in a year or so. I drive a Mazdaspeed 6 and would absolutely love a new one to come out in the current body style. PS, big fan of your channel!
+Mgoblagulkablong You forgot that Mazda probably will re-release a CX-7 to fill the gap between the CX-5 and CX-9! Mazda will probably use the same CX-9 engine in 2017! Probably looking at 2019-2020 for other models like 3 and 6 and CX-5, etc...
+HW2800 No, the CX-5 is the replacement for the CX-7. And there have already been reports that the Mazdaspeed 3 will be out next year. That engine is production-ready.
Justin C Why would Mazda release a new MazdaSpeed 3? If they do that; Mazda would face pressure to also release a MazdaSpeed 6 too! Not going happen! The "Zoom, Zoom" is slogan is rumor to come from previous advertising firm, which they fired; not the Mazda management! I think Mazda want the image of a performance brand but like Honda not put it out!
JUSTS WOW hats of to Mazda ! If you watch this sort of Video all other manufacturerers have some PR guy sitting in there that only talks down his talking points , this guy not only knows his stuff he actualy makes me trust what he said about the engine consumption ! This guy should get a raise ^^ !
While i agree people tend to focus on HP solely as a indicating factor of performance. Though i must say im a bit surprised they were not able to get at least 265 out of this power plant. They were able to get 263 from the old powerplant and it had a smaller displacement.
Love mazdas but all of their models need the following 1) Turbo Charged Sky Active like in the new CX 9 (would love to see even more power but this is a good start). 2) Power tailgate. 3) Heated Steering wheel + Heated (already have the heated seats) and COOLED Seats. 4) Arroundview backup camera. 5) Panoramic Sunroof
if I needed the room I'd have waited but I didn't so got the 2016 cx5, I think I'm the only person in florida who bought an awd gt 2.5 with heated seats and all the whistles but had to have it.... found that without the port on it feels a little tame and it it on feels a little peak at 40 mph, but hy, it's safe, it's cool, love the two tone wheels and when I find bends , because there's no hills, then she's a little darling when kept on the boil.
+Eric Uh There are some similarities with packaging and layout but that's mostly it. The vents, screen, temp dials, etc. are there but the nuance is in the other ball field altogether with the trimming, cup holders, paneling, and so on. I think the Audi looks more techno and the Mazda is more contemporary.
Mazda's love for longer-looking hoods on their more recent vehicles works beautifully on this 💕 The 6 is another gorgeous example. Plus the interior is stunning without being overdone, and the head and tail lights are smaller which is refreshing and appealing to me. I'm not a fan of large SUVs to begin with but theres a lot to love here including that torquey engine. I hope its as good as this presenter said it is!
We just got a new 6 wagon and totally love it. It's not perfect but for the money it's awesome. Will get one of these in a couple of years. I sat in a top spec model in the dealership not knowing anything about them and was totally blown away. It was as nice as the German SUV's.....but cheaper and more reliable not doubt
Awesome vid. Seriously interested in this new Mazda now having heard easy to understand explanation about the car by Dave. He should be the face for this car everywhere it goes!
EGR tends to gum up the intake valves in a DI engine which Skyactiv IS. If Mazda did not address the particulate in the exhaust before routing the gas back through intake valve, what happens is you lose 20-30% of the power over 20-40k miles. Just google "walnut blasting intake valves" as many DI engine owners had resorted to.
Mazda is doing great, the always surpass my expectations lately. Great interview, that Mazda guy knows what's he talking about, not just another PR-bullshit. :D
This must be the most informative video I've seen. Well done The Fast Lane and well done for the guy from Mazda! Wish there were more videos like these. I bumped into this by accident because I am actually holding off from buying a car until the new Mazda CX-4/6 based on the Koeru concept is released but I already wanted to learn a bit about the latest Mazda tech. I live in China and as some of you may have found out on the Internet, the CX-4/6 seems to be ready for production and has already been spotted undisguised in a factory here. So I kind of cheated and talked to our local dealership saying that I will either buy a car from another brand or wait for the CX-4/6. So I managed to get some inside information. They said that they will actually have a model in their showroom in April and will start to sell in June. So this indicates that the car will probably be presented in Geneva in March or Beijing in April.
+KamikazeSOF2 No, the only mazda I've driven so far was a Mazda 5 years ago, it was a rental and I drove it on a trip through Norway, Sweden and Denmark and for an MPV it handled amazingly well. Now I've seen what they have done with their Skyactiv Technology and it's truly amazing. One friend of mine came looking for advice for a new family car a few months ago and he's buying a '16 Mazda 6 wagon because of me.

I hate to dispute Dave Coleman, but I think he's wrong about when EGR kicks in. Typically EGR kicks in during part throttle, not full throttle. It increases efficiency because it raises the compression pressure, without introducing more combustible air in there; and also decrease the intake vacuum which saps power.
+Adrian B It's 185hp and what's wrong with it? That's plenty of pull to get to speeds. This engine may trickle down to other models, but don't expect it for a few years.
+83FB7 come on man what year do you live in where 180hp is enough? at least 240. it's called a sport utility vehicle not a van. i want to have fun with it not get old while accelerating.
+Adrian B The difference is I know how to actually use the 185hp properly so yeah, it works well actually. Hell I drove the 2.0L CX-5 and it carved up the mountains without any struggle.
Just listening to this guy, his knowledge and confidence, makes me want to shake his hand and buy this car. I miss working at Mazda so much, I wish I never left. I know this is an exceptional vehicle, but Mazda won't sell very many, I know that. Very curious to see how MPG plays in the real world. TFL, you HAVE to do an MPG run on this thing when you have one!!!
I just hope they fixed the undercoating issue on CX9. I only bought my 2015 CX9 in NOV 2015 and noticed after 3 months of ownership that all welded areas are rusting. Here is my disappointing response on my filed inquiry: Apparently the appearance of rust on the joints is normal. I saw both older and newer models (not all CX-9 vehicles) on the lifts and they all have the same thing. There is no technical service bulletin issued (the only TSB associated with rust is on the long gone Mazda Tribute). I spoke to one of the more experienced Mazda technicians and did a little research. The oxidation is on all the uncoated surfaces and has nothing to do with the paint. The "uncoated" surfaces are actually coated with a "sacrificial" metal coating. The difference in composition of the steel used for the space frame and the composition of the weld (as well as other metals) causes galvanic corrosion which starts with exposure to water. The water connects the two dissimilar metals and the sacrificial coating oxidizes to protect the base metal. All the weld joints will eventually look rusty. The paint only provides partial protection and (unless the paint has been scratched off) you'll see that the areas that are not in contact with other metals are pretty rust free. It seems that rusting weld areas are normal on mazda. I suggest that you check yours also. In case you are having the same issue, call their corporate support and tell them that it is about similar issue as - File Number 1-226958261.
I don't want to sound pessimistic, but if you remember the Nissan Pathfinder came with a bang and went with a judder...i would wait for a while before i buy this car....but it looks awesome.Hope the engine holds up....
I've had a previous gen CX9 for the past couple of years and had issues with its brake pumps. I wonder if they've upgraded to a new set of brakes or whether they're carryovers from the previous car. this is a serious issue and could play a vital role in deciding whether I buy this new one or not
Dave said "we put a lot of work into making sure that the second rows fold down easily enough for children to do it..." Folding it down is easy, bringing it back is not. You still have to go down to help the kids bring back that second row ..
first time i see a guy knows so much about a product, it is as if he designed it inside out. very refreshing .
Funny thing. He did design a lot of it. :)
+The Fast Lane Car thanks for getting quality reviews
he gave an awesome overview
+supernova1976 I know right, it's like 1000x better than what a car salesman would tell you. :)) These kind of vidoes shows people on how much work, and simply the thought process engineers and designers go through just to give you a quality product. +Carmack Motors He was great!
That PR guy was amazing. Mazda needs to hang on to him. Not boring like Toyotas PR and full of knowledge. Great insight
+Blake Swan From the sound of it, it seems like he drives a Mazda too which is a good thing. You can feel his passion for the brand
(it was on wrong reply lol)

This engineer just became my favorite guy, this is why i love mazda
The interior is very simply laid out and completely stunning! Well done, Mazda.

+Jonathan Washington I went to the Redlands, CA Mazda dealer, it was so sad looking. Mainly had Mazda 5's that nobody wanted.
wcjeep Exactly I actually worked for Mazda and the thing is here in FL in St pete the only dealer for Mazda is a privately owned dealer.
+Jonathan Washington It is sad. The nearest Mazda dealer for me is like an hour's drive on the interstate away and the one time I was able to visit it was getting too dark to look at the cars. Real wood and metal trim👍. My BMW has plastic wood trim.
are you sure I heard they use real wood
it is plastic covered with a thin layer of wood. it is still wood to touch :)
+supernova1976 That is how all cars are. My car has a large strip of real aluminum that spans the dash, but if you go to the parts department, it's 2 pieces. A large plastic strip in that shape and a real aluminum sticker the thickness of a piece of paper.

Um yeah not true. Bmw uses the same type of wood process that every luxury manufacture uses.
Braden McHenry exactly

+cameron-scott smith Wait for the 2017 model. They're finally getting rid of the "beak" on the front.
That interior is gorgeous. Mazda competes price-wise with Chevrolet, Ford, and Toyota, but their interiors are BMW and Audi level. One of the biggest mysteries is why Mazda is not outselling their competitors.
Good Things About Mazda Is That They Haven't Put That CVT Crap in their cars.
that interior is niiiccccceee!
also who is this guy and he needs to get his own channel. he comes across as the technical guy but in reality he is an incredibly strong salesman for the brand.
that was one hell of a review, i learned alot and the car is amazing...mazda is such a great brand with beautiful car
Who clicks the thumbs down for an awesomely informative sneak peek like this? Thanks for this! Really looking forward to driving this bad boy.
I'm really impressed with the interior, it might be my next family car!
Put this engine in the Mazda 6! Please !!
+AChopra I believe they may put this on a Mazda 6 Speed to be as sport edition !
+AChopra you can get the mazda 3 in the US with the 2.5 liter gasoline engine doing over 180 bhp, close to a VW golf GTI.
+AChopra and the AWD plz!!!
+THEAHD11 *Speed Edition ;)

That guys sold me that 2016 CX9 (2017) with that knowleadge. Awesome. God bless.
this guy knows his stuff.

I love the interior and infotainment system in my 2016 CX-5. Mazda really designed the heck out of their newer cars.
That MAZDA guy is a superb speaker. He explains things in a way that it's understandable, without dumbing it down or over complicating the topic. I'm going to trade my wife's 2022 MINI Countryman in on either a 22-23 Signature or Grand Touring CX-9 in the coming months.

Talented guy from Mazda! Made me decide to seriously consider Mazda over others here in the Phils
What a beautiful backdrop to test these vehicles and great to have a Mazda expert on hand! Awesome video guys ..
Really interesting to listen to this guy. Explaining all the mechanical systems, and really well I might add.

U can have the 6 speed with the lower trims of it
This guy sold this vehicle. No body could sell me a vehicle with these horses and say it is better then a higher HP vehicle. Made lots of sense
That thing looks great! I wasn't a fan of the old CX9 but I can't wait to get my hands on one of these!
seems like i'll be coming back to Mazda in the near future .. I grew up in a 929 II hb wagon
Now thats the kind of info I want to hear on vehicles
Great info. I've never considered a Mazda crossover, until now. Thanks!
Great review. I think this car is heads above any other SUV's out there. For the price and quality, very hard to beat.
Why aren't there more people like him? He's amazing!
I love mazda's infotainment system and their philosophy behind it.
Can't wait to see a test drive of this vehicle once it is in the wild.
Yeah... If we could get this engine in a Mazdaspeed 3 or 6 that would be great. Please Mazda! We all want it!
The interior is fancy! I think I can get over the tiny headlights.
Love mazdas but all of their models need the following
1) Turbo Charged Sky Active like in the new CX 9 (would love to see even more power but this is a good start).
It's amazing just 4 years ago I didn't like a single Mazda model, now I love them all, the 6 is in the top 3 best looking midsized sedans.
Sounds great, can't wait to see the driving impression
interior layout and design almost the same as new Audi Q7
+Eric Uh i thought the same thing when i saw it...
+Eric Uh Mazdas and Audis do seem to come from similar design themes. But, the Q7 interior is definitely much different than this CX-9
The Audi Q7 new interior is so ugly and so different Mazda in the design wins for sure
Omg the new cx9 looks amazing! Hope to see a comparison between this and the pilot when you guys get this for a week
One of the few (if not the only) big-ass SUV that actually looks good.
Mazda in my opinion is offering the best engineered cars, with clever and practical solutions without leaving aside an engaging driving experience.
Well said !!

Looks like a family minivan lifted.
Pretty impressive. It's about time Mazda did an overall of the CX-9 and from what I see (and heard), it just may be the vehicle to buy. Nice job.
do you guys know if they're putting this engine in the cx5? I'd really love to get one but the 2.5 170hp sucks gigantic balls
+Adrian B it's a Mazda not an Audi SQ5, Porshe Macan , BMW X5m so what are you really expecting ?
+Adrian B The difference is I know how to actually use the 185hp properly so yeah, it works well actually. Hell I drove the 2.0L CX-5 and it carved up the mountains without any struggle.
Oh and for the record, these are Crossover Utility Vehicles
That was very informative, any information on base price? Wish we could have seen the AWD system in action.
WOW, this engineer is awesome.
Dang! That was a great video! The Mazda guy was really informative! Thanks TFLC!
Mazda website has different interior all together for this 2016 CX 9. Will this interior come in some different edition?
I just hope they fixed the undercoating issue on CX9.
I only bought my 2015 CX9 in NOV 2015 and noticed after 3 months of ownership that all welded areas are rusting.
Here is my disappointing response on my filed inquiry:
Apparently the appearance of rust on the joints is normal.
This was in the top of my shopping list. However dealer tells me they doubt it will actually launch in the spring. I need something before May
I don't want to sound pessimistic, but if you remember the Nissan Pathfinder came with a bang and went with a judder...i would wait for a while before i buy this car....but it looks awesome.Hope the engine holds up....
that touch thingy, he's gave a slap on recent Hondas and i like him! xD
Good to see Mazda stepping it up 👌🏼
I've had a previous gen CX9 for the past couple of years and had issues with its brake pumps.
You still have to go down to help the kids bring back that second row ..
not sure that chrome strip on the lower lip running the width of the car works..but the rest of that CX9 is sweet.
i work for mazda i wish i knew how to get involved to test these vehicles like yall
can't wait to get behind the wheels of new CX-9
