2016 / 2017 Mazda CX-9 First Drive Review | in 4K UHD!

- With excellent handling, sharp looks and a reasonable price tag, the new Mazda CX-9 is the cure for the average 3-row crossover. The last CX-9 was no slouch, but the new model brings a world-class interior, more gadgets and significantly improved fuel economy. All I could wish for is a more powerful engine.

man, you are one of the best car reviewers on youtube if not the best. thanks for such a detailed honest review, great job alex.
Savagegeese is another great one on UA-cam but l love Alex channel the best.
This and savagegeese are the best.
I've been watching reviews on CX9's all week, and this is the best presented and most informative one I've seen. Thank you, that was marvellous.
Finally... ....I've been waiting for this review for a long time.
This is the most thorough review I’ve ever seen - great job man !
Not really a fan of large SUVs but when I saw this I had to check it out. Gorgeous design, especially when you see it in person! Interior is ace too. Interesting to see the luxury finesse and features for significantly less money than actual luxury offerings.
I work at a Mazda dealer and this is a fantastic review. you have to sit in, drive, and play with the control knob to see how great this is. top trims are more on par with the xc90 Volvo
wow what a nice looking suv. definitely in my shopping list.
Wow. Beautiful inside and out. Mazda is really on its game recently. Easily competes with my MDX.
I really enjoy your reviews. They are so thorough, so well shot. I appreciate that you include 4k. Keep up the good work.
man, you did a lot of homework on this vehicle. The most detailed review I've ever seen. For this, I subscribe your channel. Very very nice job. Maybe you can sometimes do some reviews on performance cars~~~ Keep it up, dude.
Very, very thorough and comprehensive review Alex. This is the first one of yours I've watched. Surely you're out of breath often because it seemed that you talked non-stop from beginning to end!
Editing. Something other reviewers could learn from.
Finally. I have been waiting to see a super in-depth review of this vehicle. I saw it at an autoshow and it is amazing. Thank you.
I was considering Kia Sorento ,but men Mazda looks very nice.Looking forward to see next video about CX 9.
Thank you Alex.
Finally. I have been waiting to see a super in-depth review of this vehicle. I saw it at an autoshow and it is amazing.
Reviews don't get more comprehensive than this!
what a great review. Most journalists out there would need a month with the car to get 2 min of material.
thank you
Much better looking than the old model.
I really appreciated the ratings being highlighted THROUGHOUT the video! Great job.
The best looking SUV out now among all classes.
i would usually go nah to 4 cylinders, but mazda somehow gets their new 4 bangers to sound so nice with exhaust.
Great review man. Left no stone unturned!
Alex you make the best video car reviews on UA-cam! No one can touch you! You are the only one who actually details 3rd row seating which is important to many!
Did mazda say anything about Android Auto and Apple Car Play. Omission of that is the biggest disappointment! Can you dig deep and see if they will hit that owners will be able to upgrade to it when the time comes?
Mazda finally did a heads-up display justice, none of that gimmicky pop-up plastic.
I kinda liked the pop up one
It's really great. It is on par with if not better than the BMW system, which has been the best in the business.
This is an excellent review. Detailed but quick and touches most all the bases. Good job, Alex.
I figured the engine would be only just barely adequate when every singly review was basically regurgitating Mazda's PR department's focus on the engine being more than enough for most driver's. This is the first review that somewhat mentioned the engine power is not all it's cracked up to be, and I believe Alex over all the other reviews because like I said each review has been a complete regurgitation of Mazda's press release. Thanks for the honesty Alex.
Excellent and very thorough review! Thanks
Excellent, detailed review as usual Alex. No one gives a review quite like you. Please consider reviewing the coming Honda Ridgeline. It would be great to see your opinion on it. Cheers!
This wood is spectacular. I am not sure my mom's Q5 has a better interior.
Instead of dialing up the motor and sacrificing efficiency I would make it a hybrid like the Volvo xc90 T8. Although it would add extra weight due to the addition of the batteries and the motor it will be faster off the line and combined fuel economy will be raised dramatically and people will have the option of driving silently on electric for at least 20-30 miles. A killer improvement for the CX-9. I hope Mazda considers it in future model sooner than later.
The front headlight and fender area reminds me of the first generation Infiniti fx
Im buying this car...
I too want this car
Can I have it for $10 dollars
Movies
Can't wait to see your future review on the all new GMC Arcadia.
I took a test drive of this the other day. love the way it drives of course it's Mazda. the turning radius is surprisingly shorter than my 2016 Jetta which is impressive for vehicle of its size. That 4 cylinder doesn't feel short on power at all. oh and this car is super quite from inside.
Alex you're doing excellent job!!! But why are you skipping the explorer sport? Really want to see the explorer on your channel.
Alex, first off great reviews as always! I look forward to your videos every time when you upload one. I was wondering by any chance if you could review the top of the line FIAT 500X? Much appreciated!
Hi Alex,
Nice car but my main issue is the extended front grille which can get damage if parked on the streets of large cities like New York City. I wish they had a bumper that stock-out.
dont hate on the Durango, i love that thing. especially the r/t model with the hemi
Great review Alex!
Everywhere on youtube I hear Madza, Mazda, Mazda. Consumer reports seems to be in love with Mazda along with bunch of other youtube channels and magazines. Did Mazda become Honda or Toyota on budget?
Yes, yes they did.
Their cars are more than transportation appliances, they have Soul, I've owned 7 over 20 years, they keep getting better IMO and so much more fun to drive than Accords & most certainly the lifeless Camry (excluding V6).
They always have... especially when Ford owned them. Back in 2010 I bought a Mazda3 after pricing it next to the Ford Focus... the Focus was more expensive for less standard options. The base Focus cost more than my Mazda3 Sport that had Bose/Sunroof package... so I went with Mazda. In 2013, I needed to get a bigger ride, my wife took over my Mazda3 and I got a 2011 Mazda CX-9. Again, I priced it with Highlander and Pilot and of course the Traverse which was the only thing bigger. Price per standard options, the Mazda was the better deal. Granted, it was used and resale being what it is... I still have the CX-9. I think most people know of Mazda, know they are great cars, know they handle and drive the best next to a BMW or other German cars, but for whatever reason, just are not buying them. I am guessing it is because their friends do not have a Mazda, so they do not buy one. Minivan complex anyone?
+B.L. Alley That's it. Mazda is able to inject the sporty handling of the MX5 Miata across their entire line up.
+william ingram jr Because Mazdas look feminine.
Great review on the CX-9. I am curious to see how this compares to the new GMC Acadia. I live in Manhattan, and the new Pilot, the new GMC Acadia are shorter in length making it potentially a better choice for more urban dwellers.
Very professional review. Good job
Another solid review Alex!! So the lesser 2017 CX-5 GT can now be had with heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and 6-way power passenger seat, but I can't get any of those in the "more premium" 2017 CX-9 GT or Signature (US Spec)??? If Mazda offered a package that included those features, plus ventilated front seats, a pano sunroof and remote start that didn't require a subscription or additional fob, I'd buy it immediately. Until that happens, I'll keep waiting or buy a Ford Edge Sport (which comes with all of those features I want). HUD display is nice, but not a deal-breaker for me. Still, this Mazda design (int and ext) is intriguing!
Great Review Alex!
I am kind of surprised at the pricing for this vehicle considering there is no engine upgrade. I kind of wished they would have did something different in terms of the headlamp and tail lamp designs. Where are the vented seats?
Hi Alex, thanks for the review. Just a quick irrelevant question: In which part of California did you shoot this review? The views are amazing!!
Cooled seats and more power would be two things I'd like to see along with the ability to get the signature trim in something less monochromatic. It's a good option and one I'll look at.
Looks amazing actually. But there are 2 things I really miss in Mazda suvs: powerful engins and large panoramic sunroofs that they still can't offer as an option. In fact I'd be ready to pay 10-20k more for better options, hope they'll change that soon
Really helpful video. Nicely done too. Thanks!
Mazda is stepping up their game. Got their Mazda 3, Would've loved the new and improved HUD on the other models and wish they would release Apple Carplay and Android Auto.
Heres a true statement, no one needs zero to 60 when your torque kicks in at 2000 RPM. That's why Mazda went with the award winning sky active engine four with the turbo. They're promoting less assholeness driving. I think too many people are sold on more horsepower and believe it's a necessity. In my humble opinion
That's so true this is a seven seater family hauler not some boy racer hatch back. 0 to 60 is only really relevant during a zombie apocalypse
Weather you pull out and taking a left or right and there's traffic coming and you need to gun it or wether your merging you need some power to get up to speed.
+Imma Turkey That's where 310 ft lbs of torque at 2000 rpms come in.
mark williams
no one is gonna feather is at 2000 rpm.... your gonna scared about getting rear ended so you floor it so you get the rpms up and get up to speed.
Imma Turkey That is where 3100 ftlbs of torque comes in not HP. Take off is mostly torque
As usual Alex does a fantastic job of reviewing a vehicle. I was going to complain he didn't mention the size of the infotainment screen but he got to that at the end. So the only question I wish I could ask is about reliability. Mazda is famous for making fun to drive cars that basically have what you're looking for. But I've also heard they're not the most reliable. Although after seeing this review I'm not sure I care.
Uh, what?!? The only brand more reliable than Mazda is Lexus...
+anishannayya1 Not true. Mazda dropped about four spots in Consumer Reports reliability ratings.
+anishannayya1 Stats plz?
Sorry..meant to say they are #4 behind Audi, Toyota, and Lexus.

A non luxury vehicle with luxury qualities. How does this have real wood as well as better leather while a luxury Jeep like the Acura MDX doesn't? It's extremely weird
I have a cx 5 and I'm hooked on Mazda I like where they're going I wish I knew how to invest in Mazda stock
the Grand cherokee has real wood. The MDX is the one that doesn't.
I find the Grand Cherokee to be roomier. Other than that, I found the CX9 to be a very nice interior.
$44k it better have luxury qualities
It's weird because in Canada we get real wood on mdx. It's actually open pore wood.
You sir are a great reviewer.
Hi Alex, Thanks for great review as always... Did you get a chance to drive the car for some more time and how was your impression of this car after driving it for a lets say a week?
Just want to add this as well: according to Mazda, zero to 60 wasn't in the character of the new CX 9. They were concentrate on the driving aspect of it. You can find this information on Motoman Tv. A Mazda engineer breaks down the whole motor for you
Test drove one of these yesterday. Awesome!
they should make a sick high performance model, like the Jeep SRT. it already has a pretty aggressive front
So basically you love it! :) Are you going to do a Child Car seat review for this car?
I wrote this over on TFL's sneak peak review, but I have to say it again. Why did Mazda not include heated rear seats, remote start, or a heated steering wheel on any of the trim levels? Not even the high end $44k trim has these features, which can be found in all of the cx-9's competition (pathfinder, pilot, highlander, explorer etc). For those of us who live in colder climates these features are more important than a heads-up display or pieces of wood next to the shifter.
+Christopher Walken Also no cooled seats, instead we have "Napa leather + real wood " lol
+V1perKiller Wow, no cooled seats either. Good catch. Gotta wonder what they were thinking leaving out so many interior features. But yeah, it's got pieces of wood inside of it. Awesome.
+Christopher Walken I think that the real reason is Mazda doesn't have the ability to amortize costs across enough models to bring some of those features in. Instead they bet on features like the LED lamps which are shared across the model line. You notice that the CX-9 still uses the same radar cruise control, 2-zone climate control, etc as the rest of the Mazda lineup. I think it's all budget related,.
get an aftermarket remote start and a 12v heating pad and call it a day
That had to leave some room for improvement this is just the first model year and it's still a solid entry
Thanks for the review Alex! No vented seats on the top trim is a bit of a downer, but everything else looks great -especially the HUD. Replacing my 2008 CX-9 with the 2016 or a Volvo XC90. Still deciding.
Fantastic review, Alex. Definitely more than "near-luxury" in some areas - for me, competition is even broader. I don't think I could ever internally justify a Q7 or RX over the Signature, for example. Closest maybe is the XC90 T5 Momentum, but you're not getting Napa leather or wood grain anything at that price point.
Another excellent review ! Alex, one question if you have the time: Which SUVs have brake hold?
I know that the Kia Sorento does, but it seems few others offer it. I love the brake hold feature. My BMW X550 also had it. Thank you.
i really like their new grill design
a mazdaspeed version with over 300 hp would make dads (and some moms too) a lot happier driving a family car.
The interior kinda looks like the new 2016 Lexus Rx, but its a well crafted premium build. Only wished that front seats are more adjustable.
While I understand the reasoning behind the Mazda CX-9 getting a 4 cylinder for the new generation. I wish this got a revised 3.7 V6 with like 303 HP as an option.
Alex, I am in the market for an SUV with a k budget. How would you rate the CX9, Durango, Explorer, Sorento from first to last. I really like this CX however I think I am just shy of some of the options I believe come with the Durango at less price point such as roof rails etc.
Another great review Alex!! Can't wait for the full review -- if it can be any fuller! Keep up the good work.
Excellent video. Hope " all you need, but no more" engine sells well. I'd skimp a couple of mpg or inches of legroom for a little more oomph , personally. And I wonder how impressed your passenger will be with the wood and nappa leather when he/she can't adjust the seat comfortably on a long trip. That said, I think it's gorgeous and would work for me!
Totally good points.
I have the 2011 CX-9 Touring AWD with Bose/Sunroof package. There are a lot of similarities here even though Mazda said this was all new from the ground up. Still looks like mine, which is built on the Ford Edge platform. Even the key fob is the exact same as mine. I do like what they did with the interior. One thing you didnt touch on was, the second row seats apparently on the lower trims, will fold forward to allow access to the third row, even with a car seat in the second row. Anyhow, Love my CX-9 for how well and engaging it drives. Sad they got rid of the V6 Ford 3.6 (Mazda bored it out to 3.7) engine. I use mine to tow a pop up trailer and that V6 helps. Also, my gas milage is 15 around town, and got 21 on a trip to Wisconsin from Seattle. I will appreciate the better gas milage.
+Thomas Andrew don't be naive. I have the 2011 CX-9. up until this year, it is the same platform since 2007. same engine but built by Mazda. Mazda designed their own 6 speed and Ford went to bed with Chrysler to build the 6 speed in the edge. yes the marriage is all but over but the cx9 was still using the edge platform. Mazda claims this new CX-9 is all new, but again, it looks the same sans a few changes. GTS if you don't believe me, takes you less time to do so than to type your comment.
+Thomas Andrew it is a Ford engine design built by Mazda only for Mazda. look, put the Twinkie and mountain dew down and stop trolling... look it up yourself. GTS!
+Thomas Andrew OK so you are 21, living in your mom's basement with a lifetime of Twinkies and mountain dew. perhaps they dropped the v6 because it is Ford's v6 design and the agreement was up. Google stuff before you speak please. meanwhile I own the car which is imported from Japan. there is no company meaning engines in the US and sending them overseas for final assemble. remember the Mazda 6 before the overhaul? built in the US by Ford with the same dang v6... beside no one... but go ahead and ready your captain America cereal with the star marshmallows and pretend you know what you are talking about. good day troll.
Will you do another video of the 2019 CX9 with the upgrades they have?
i hope the new CX5 will look like this.
Man I want Mazda to put this engine in future CX 5 I'm sure it would be a hoot to drive
Stop complaining about peak horsepower and acceleration times, what really matters in everyday driving is power delivery, and that's what sets this engine apart. Looking forward to real world fuel economy numbers.
Love ur videos but will u be doing the Lincoln Continental and the new Ford F-150
I love your reviews, I have a concern on soft plastic today in the das (that most of the companies are doing), it will last longer and keep the same quality with the years?
Excellent review. Thanks.
So many As! Happy to hear the noise is controlled. How does it track, like does it need lots of corrections? The HUD is so much nicer than that plastic thing that was in the 3.
Hi Alex,
Are you planning to add another detailed video after driving it for a week.
It actually looks beautiful, I'm impressed
i live in SF too and want to know what roads do you test drive on? they look really fun!
YES! Thank you Alex, been waiting for this one for a while, definitely my next car.
I was set to Sorento limited then this was revealed few months ago, now I'm not sure anymore.
Great video bud.
Sorry, didn't quite understand what you said @ 2:50. Max torque on 87 octane drops from 310ft-lb, or it peaks @ >4k rpm?
Great review, Alex.
One piece of feedback: you definitely use the word 'definitely' too much... definitely ;-)
Hey can you do an Audi A4 2017 review? Great videos btw
@alex
Any review about the backup camera? I test drove and I was shocked to see the image quality in backup camera. its horrible
Hi Ales. In your view, just to compare the safety features between the CX-9 and the MDX, (passive, active, AWD, lights, etc.) which is superior? how does this AWD system compare to the MDX's SH-AWD?
Must. Watch. Full review!
Then. Do. It. Dummy !
great review Alex as usual, btw does it have fog lamp?
+Thomas Andrew where? i mean it's not obvious like any other cross over SUV
+Thomas Andrew ow okay, will try to Google it, thx mate for responding
Always love Alex reviews!! Keep up the good work
Alex, I to wish for more power. I also am trying to figure out why they had to resort to 4cyl to lighten the load when Honda some how made the Pilot larger and lighter at the same time. I know that Mazda is a smaller OEM and that may be the reason for some of my criticism. For instance I was hoping they would upgrade the transmission to an 8,9 or ten speed. No panoramic sunroof which is pretty much available on every other make of CUV. Cooled seats would have been nice.. I love the look, inside and out as it appears very premium. If Ford decides to redo the Flex then both of them will be at the top of my list. I am for some reason as I have told you before attached to the Flex.
Once again great review and keep up the good work. Cant believe that some less knowledgeable folks here would insinuate that you are getting paid by Mazda for a good review. I thought OEM stopped that in the 90's due to backlash and rep damage.
Alex on Autos - I love how detailed and methodical your reviews are. I am a bit confused by something and hope you might be able to clarify for me. I watched your review of the Honda Pilot and this review of the Mazda CX-9 and in this video despite stating that the Pilot has more second and third row space, you gave the CX-9 higher scores for second and third row. Is that because the seats in the CX-9 are more comfortable despite slightly less space or are there other design aspects that contributed to the higher score for the CX-9 in those two categories?
I found the seat designs to be more comfortable despite having a little less room
do the gls 550 plz and great video
@Alex, how does the interior of a CX-9 in both fit and finish compared to the Lexus RX. I'll be interested to know this since the CX-9 seems to have become more luxurious especially in the signature Editions.
Very helpful review, thank you
Alex,
Any chance you might review a top trim level 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee or Dodge Durango?
He has a review for the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Look it up in his channel. He might have one for the Durango but I'm not sure.
Ian Cancel I've seen the 2014/15 reviews, but I'm curious to see an updated '16 review. Thanks for your input :^{
+J High Very true, I overlooked the fact that you asked for the 2016 model. Sorry for that. However I completely agree in that I also would like to see a review for the new models. Specially since the Jeep Grand Cherokee is one of my favorite SUVs.
+Ian Cancel
Very true. Alex did a '14 Durango Limited V8 review. I'd like to see a '16 Durango Citadel review as well as a '16 JGC Summit.
+J High Yeah I'd like to see that for sure.
Yes yes yes yes! I was just waiting for this review, can't decide between this or the 17 Highlander or the new Pilot
Definitely this unless u can afford the highlander hybrid and care about the 28mpg combined
If you plan on keeping the car longer, Highlander or Pilot will have better resale and lower maintenance cost. Updated Highlander is coming this fall.
Hello Alex. I wanted to ask you a question. I've look at your review for the Mazda, and Acura MDX. I want to make a purchase but wanted your quick opinion. If you had to personally buy one, which would it be? The Mazda CX-9, or the Acura MDX? Thank you for your time, and great reviews.
Awesome review Alex. Good job comparing it to the MDX and QX60 as that is the class this plays with still being lower than a Platinum Highlander, Pilot Elite and the horrible CVT based Pathfinder.... Wish well for Mazda to sell a ton of these.
Are you going to cover a car seat video for this vehicle?
I read that the dashboard is actually leather, not soft touch plastic.
Where did you read that, I would like to know. I would be surprised but since it has real wood and aluminum than maybe the dashboard is real leather! That'd be cool.
Joshua Rutter I honestly don't remember where I read it but it was from one of the major auto news websites like autoblog or something. And to be clear, the leather dash is only available on the Signature trim.
Just looked at our local Mazda dealer and they had a signature and you are right. Signature trim comes with Auburn leather dash while the Grand Touring is a soft touch dash.
Also, would definately recommend test driving.
jaymum23 I agree with everything you said.
It costs an immense amount of money to launch a luxury brand. There is absolutely no possibility of Mazda doing this. Hyundai/Kia is far bigger.
Alex, with the real wood trim in the CX-9, do you think it competes with luxury entries than the mass market entries?
