Don't forget that travelling involves airports, waiting in lines, possible delays, long flights, layovers, luggage, exhaustion, jet lag, maybe even dehydration (dry air on the plane). Travelling can be tiring! I've realized that I love the idea of visiting many countries, but not the process.

I call the airport my second home. And yep, everything you said is true about the traveler life. I've been abroad off and on for the better part of the last three years. I have a photo blog but I have no interest in being a travel blogger because that's not how I want to remember my experiences.

Why I love Damon&Jo's travel vlog, they are proudly budget travellers and show all of it: the fatigue, their bickering, sleeping in train stations to save money etc. They honestly bring out the raw beauty of why I love to travel, the joy and the struggle.

I came to Spain to study abroad the day this video was published. I remember watching it and not being able to relate because I hadn't lived it yet. Now I'm watching it 8 months later and I found myself nodding and knowing exactly what you're talking about. I stay in budget hostels, traveling is so cheap in Europe it's crazy. I'm traveling 10 days straight for Semana Santa and I spent $200ish dollars on plane tickets whereas that wouldn't have been enough to get me from one coast to the other, back home. It's crazy how much you learn in a lengthy amount of time.

Thank you! My friend was a blogger for this "black" people travel site. She was lying all through that trip! I was very upset because I felt she was going to trick black people into a location where they would not be welcome or comfortable because of their skin. We has some racist things happen to us and she just shook it off as cultural differences. Ummm, it wasn't. It was racist behavior!

It's a choice whether or not to focus on the negative aspects of a trip. I have dealt with some racism while traveling in Europe, but it was nothing compared to what I deal with in the south, USA. I totally encourage blacks to visit any place they want to go. Somebody else's ignorance is not going to ruin my trip. I had some racist experiences while visiting Iceland and Sweden, but I still had an awesome time and met some cool locals. I would totally go back and visit again, even if some people may think that I'm "unwelcome" there.

How do you learn this without traveling

Haha love this! As a travel blogger, i can relate to some of your points. It is the reason why I'd rather concentrate on the blog than give in to the pressure of posting a lot of social media updates. Sometimes when i am on a press trip, most of my fellow bloggers tend to just take pictures and keep clicking for the 'perfect shot' or perfect happy video update than enjoy the moment by swimming or doing the activities. They end up taking my pics and vids because by the time they're done our time is up or they're too tired or hungry to do the activity. I also don't want to feel pressured to post purely travel posts on my IG when i am also interested in other stuff like fangirling and novel writing/reading. Cheers!

I lived in London and then in South Korea and the part about being on the move is so true and I make friends with people from around the world but I never see them again unless it's FB. @@mode7scaling3 Thank you for being real and not being a superficial hyper consumer conformist like all these liars. And people who don't realize that the people working in these tourist areas are being exploited and the only reason their being nice to you is because you are a customer and they need you to pay their bills. Other than that living in a tourist area and working for these tourists is the worst. Anyone in a tourist country or tourist state knows this, trust me I worked at a Marriott hotel resort in myrtle beach for three years and the guest were the absolute worst because they think just because they pay money they have the right to disrespect you and act super privileged. Another thing people fail to realize is that tourism in a lot of these countries is not something the natives want, but because of colonization these countries that are war torn or coming off of hundreds of years of slavery the tourist industry takes advantage of that; which is another after affect of colonization. That's why I tell people before you travel aboard travel in your own back yard because most people that wan to go abroad because of superficial reasons haven't even been to five states in their own country. #Getout thesystemandfuckcapitalism

Some of the best moments are so random that you don't even have time to catch it, like when a Chinese taxi driver tried to teach me a Chinese pop song. Who's gonna stop him so I can get it on tape? And the pinching pennies and eating slim lunches all year so you can travel in summer...and the fact that you really don't belong anywhere and the only other people who understand this are expats and other long term travellers....I am def. sharing your video✊🏿✊🏿

    Somewhere Always,
You hit the nail on the head on so many accounts. I am a travel blogger with my family. Admittedly the best things we do often are never caught on film. I have entire trips we take that are never recorded because we are having too much fun doing them.
It is also strange how a vacation can completely suck, and yet when you make the video it makes it look like you were in heaven. We went to New Orleans recently, an amazing city but admittedly half the places we went to smelt so bad we could hardly breath. It was hot and humid, being the the west we weren't use to that kind of temperatures and on top of that I got a migraine.
After the trip I showed my husband the video and he was like "woah, it looked like we actually had a good time."
Mind you New Orleans is an awesome place, but for us it was a bad vacation.
What you said about being broke is also true. We are not broke, but we are just an average family. We simply prioritize travel more than anything else so we are able to do it at least once a month. When we go on vacation we spend almost nothing only splurging on the occasional cool experience.
We love traveling 80% is awesome but 20% is hell. Especially since we do it with our two children under the age of 3. Totally worth it and we would live no other way. It just has its roller coasters like everything else.
Dang this was too long of a comment. Love your channel. I made sure to subscribe. Curious of what other insights you have to share in the future.

The hype is real out here! I traveled to Germany after undergrad and binge read travel blogs. I wanted to do and be those people and when I finally left my small town I was like WTF?? I had no clue how to do anything and just standing there confused at the airport. I didn't even last the whole year I was suppose to stay because it was just too much. Chasing someone else's dream shouldn't have been my purpose. I took another shot and traveled to China with my own purpose and it ended up being a difficult, interesting, insane, cringe worthy, but wonderful experience now that I look back. I needed something different, but my own choosing to accept the unexpected. You're def. right tho, all the travel bloggers with their false advertising has to stop!

Yes! There is SO much sensationalism about destination vacation as though it's a requirement to be enriched and experience joy in life as though there is something much better than Your own hometown. I had a traumatic experience going to and coming back from Texomaland down in a pick up truck at 11 with My father stepmother sisters and My Cat that had kittens then lost the Cat and kittens there. Then I came back to Buffalo NY on a Greyhound by Myself at 12 y/o.

I agree with the points articulated in this video and also encourage people not to be suckered in by what can seem like a very simplistic and carefree lifestyle as promoted by the vloggers.
But I'm glad that the video doesn't detract from the genuine beauty of travel. For the good and bad experiences, the stories, the human interactions, the sights, the lessons it can offer you.
Once you acknowledge the reality of travel/tourism you can get the best out of it. Vlogging is a business, it's important to remember that.

TBH the 'bad' part of the trips often become some of my favourite moments. And the stuff that are struggles always become some of my favourite stories to tell people and I don't know why more bloggers don't tell those parts. Various cases of food poisoning, flooding a hotel toilet, losing an expensive camera equipment in taxi, getting lost at night with creepy guy trying to take you back to a hotel, tour which turn into a massive budget breaking tourist trap..all 'bad' experiences that just become stories to tell.

There are a few travel vloggers I follow, and they typically tend to be the ones travelling to countries with negative perceptions to show their experiences with the locals (those I respect). As far as most other vloggers, they just seems like braggarts looking to use travel to inflate their own egos.

People talk about being "real" on social media, but I have never seen or heard anything more real than this, and your point about feeling "Home" I actually studied Transnationalism in uni, and that feeling is a huge topic, especially for immigrants, who set up a new life in a new country, but then never feel like they belong there, and then when they go back to their origin country, there is also a sense of not belonging because they left. That feeling of belonging, and sense of "home" is a huge part of the human condition, and it is literally ignored in ALL of social media, as if all that matters is the glamour of travelling, when I'm sure literally everyone feels this at some point. Amazing video!

Nice! This is spot on I wish travel vloggers showed more of the negatives at times and gave an idea of their budgets to give people a better idea on how they live and travel. I’ve like.... actually had deep instagram girl moments where traveling gives me a different perspective and I have some pretty deep ideas and healing, but I think that’s because I make it a practice to meditate and I’m a very spiritual person. That’s the only one that I feel like half the people are BSing but like... some of it is very very real. I recently got an RV to live and travel in so hopefully that will give me somewhat of a sense of home.

I find a lot of the professional long term travelers cliche and pretentious, arguing about who’s Burma trip was more “authentic” and judging people as tourists for those that don’t meet their standards. I guess human nature is to rank and judge people

This was the realist video Ive ever seen. I've been living abroad in the Czech Republic for for a year and a half now, and it does absolutely suck some of the time. Being a foreigner sucks, not not being able to communicate with landlords sucks, being taken advantage of sucks, missing home sucks, views not being understood sucks, not knowing where to go to buy not so common items sucks (the drain in my broke, for example, where the hell do you get one of those, especially without knowing the language well?). Don't get me wrong, it is all totally worth it. I wouldn't trade my time here for anything. But there ARE times that I just want to go home, but where is home, anyway?

  • @SoffyLoves

Chica! Exactamente! A disadvantage of being a nomad is that you start getting separated from your home culture and you'll probably never feel fully akin to people you've met in the different cultures you've lived. I know when I go back home, it will take a while to reassimilate to my Jcan home.

    Spot on!
I used to watch a lot of travel vlogs, but at some point I noticed how absurd, hollow and fake it is to sit in front of a screen instead of just doing it yourself.
And this pseudo-spiritual rubbish/fake "bonding" with the locals/instagram superficiality that can be found on most travel vlogs is just cringe.

  • @crystalroberson9968

The travel vloggers I watch all say they budget and they talk about the good, the bad,and the ugly. So I'm sure there are those who do exactly what you said, but I have found a group of them that I watch that are very "real" the ugly pictures and all. I Travel with my family ( and have lived abroad with husband and kids) so I do think that grounds one more. But as the old folks use to say, "everything that shines ain't gold." However a life of travel is possible and can be amazing, but mishaps and triles do happen, be it abroad or at home, it's just part of life. Thanks for sharing. Be Blessed.

Different people have different experiences. Even if they lie, their lie could be the truth to a certain degree. Like if they say this place is so good. Then some others will say this place is so bad. But not everyone will say the place is so good and not everyone will say this place is so bad.

Interesting. When I lived in Egypt in late 1987 I stayed in a rock-bottom pension for 2 Egyptian pounds a day. At the exchange rate at that time (2.10 to the U.S. dollar) that was about 93 cents. If I wished to visit Alexandria, I took third or even fourth-class trains that the lowest classes took. I still have ticket stubs from that time. The costs from Cairo to Alexandria were about 2 pounds and 50 piastres Third class, if I remember correctly....

Thank you so much for opening up this conversation! Scott and I travel, but it is locally; usually not more than 200 miles from where we live. We have bills that have to be paid, medical that has to be dealt with, and family that needs us. Because of this we are tied down to one place. This isn't a bad thing, but it doesn't enable us to go for that long distance, around the world type of travel. Money, so glad you brought that up too! We are definitely not rich! The trips we take are limited to what we have saved up over a few paychecks and even then we are counting our expenses. Because hotels are so expensive, we have developed a way to camp in our SUV and with hammocks. So glamorous.
I must say, I'm a little jealous that you are getting to go overseas. You go! Keep counting those $$$ and live well.
    Thanks again.

You make some good points. My problem is that all the travel bloggers are young and their videos all show the same kinds of scenes wherever in the world they are. Well if the young people travel vlog for the youngsters, then it is time for the old people to travel vlog for the oldsters. Why not ? Why should travel be limited to the young only ? Why should travel be stereotyped like only the male species can travel solo ? Most travellers are men. Why ?

The more I've come to find out about travel blogging the more I learned some of these things. You have to have a certain personality and enjoy certain things that other people dont. I would say the majority of travel bloggers are not happy. I've always been a person that enjoys things later not in the moment. So taking pictures and recording the adventure is what makes me feel good when traveling. Most people really are not this way and the real reason they are doing it is to show off to strangers. Even if no one but me or family sees my adventures, documenting is what makes me happy not being in the moment but having documentation of a moment that I created if that makes sense. But again, most people aren't this way and making themselves believe that they are, only leads them to distress and at times depression.

I totally agree! I'm an overseas buyer and travel abroad for work all the time. I can tell you traveling is not always as romantic as everyone makes it seem. Yes, vacations can be fun but that is because we get to do it sparingly. Too much of a good thing can be a bad thing. I hate airports, buses, boats, trains, planes and automobiles. Why? I hate the waiting, I get car sick and I am just fed up with it since I do it all the time. I would never choose to be traveling all the time for pleasure. NO WAY!

I use the club analogy, because it's so relevant to this topic as well as any other topic where social media has infiltrated and is being abused. People aren't actually having fun, they want their followers to believe they are having fun, just like the dummies at the club on Live with and SM platform. With Social Media at the helm, perception is everything.

I've been traveling on and off for a few years and I only read/follow a few bloggers and vloggers and those are the ones that write about the good bad and the ugly. Just because travel is one way of living doesn't mean you can escape the inevitable suffering that's part of our time on earth. It's much better to hear someone talk like a human being and not try and be perfect. Keep it up!

Traveling is the best thing. I am doing it now for 3 years. I litterely go out of my home with 2 euros. I visited 37 countries in 4 continents and now I am in Suriname. I try to show ruins and beautiful sights on my camera because I worked so hard to get here (hitchhiking, walking) and I always speak about place and country I wisit, so the people will not waste time seeing someone's travels in "I got a good life" way, but exually learn something. My heart is full when in my comments people telling me what they learned and that my chennel is good because they learned something about history, coulture, religion, how to make food dish from country I am visiting. I don't get travel bloggers who knows just to say: "hey I am here and I will go surfing" and then you watch him for 5 minutes how he is surfing. People like that you have everywhere in UA-cam, but let's do something else. Let's say something smart and pass this informations to public, instead of "empty talking". With empty talking our heads will be empty too.
