- I made a Portal 2 mod that kills me nearly instantly when I look at portalable surfaces, and tried to beat the game like this. Here's how it went.

The moon is not a portalable surface. Valve simply slapped a JPEG on the ceiling and put down a trigger that says "if you click here, the game ends". I'm not joking.

The reason why grass can support portals (I think) is that the default is that a surface can support them, but some textures have it specifically disabled. My evidence for this is that the Half-Life 2 textures all support portals.

Edit: well, to some extent. Displacement textures are portalable by default, which is what grass and other debris is typically made of.
I watched Portal dev's commentary on Portal 1 speedrun and they said that it was the case for Portal 1 (and I guess Half Life 2 as they were developed in parallel) as a result, speedrunners could use portals out of bounds. But in Portal 2 by default, a surface is not portable, so I think it is some oversight.
11:11 you have to look straight down when going through the floor portal to fix it. Msushi just lost a good pace to not looking straight down

Interesting! That honestly feels like it could be a mechanic for a whole game. In fact, it's almost the same concept for the game Perspective!
I understand why you might want to use CFG, just it would be nice to at least try going through the chambers without it for some challenges, at least where it otherwise wouldn't be required.
The difficulty for a lot of these challenges often falls during the last two chapters, and in general, a lot of the challenges just do the same Any% strategy for the last while in the vast majority of runs.
It's not really interesting as a viewer to just watch you fly to the solution that anyone who has seen one of these challenge runs (or even just a Portal 2 speedrun in general) for a extended period of time already has seen.
I totally understand this, at least since the feedback from the "Portal 2 but it's Celeste" video.
But I'm not sure if this comment is supposed critiquing this video? At 12:53, I did mention that, while I'm aware and agree with everything you've said in this comment, I also assure you that this mod is not in any way impacted by CFG. Celeste mode? Floor is Lava? Sure, I can easily see why CFG ruins those challenges.
But as I mention at 14:02, even without CFG, Chapter 8 simply isn't very unique or difficult. You might notice that towards the end of the video, all I really talk about is the impact CFG had on the last 2 chapters. The reason for this is because, while writing the script, I realized that nothing worth mentioning actually happens here. The basic concept and main obstacles in this challenge were already discussed in previous chapters. If anything, CFG breathes some actual life into the script. You could probably tell that I completely skipped over
most of Chapter 8/9 not because "the difficulty often falls" but because it's just more of the same stuff.
Here's something that might not be intuitive from a viewer's point of view: while a "difficult" challenge sounds cool, it's not actually fun to watch if there's nothing unique to talk about. What if Chapter 8 was, in fact, significantly more difficult without CFG? Would you rather have me talk about the 100th attempt at shooting a portal, or how the damage mechanics uniquely affected the fly glitch?
I'm truly sorry if any part of this comes off as rude or condescending. I'm simply very passionate about defending this point, as I believe I have thoroughly thought through the decisions I've made in both the playthrough and the script writing process. But, to summarize my point, I do not believe that avoiding CFG would have been more interesting in this video.
@@PortalRunner Not referring to this run in particular, but in general, just a common trend that occurred through some challenges can get repetitious at times. I could wait for another time to mention this, but I just wanted to get this thought out sooner or later. It would be neat in other challenges where CFG is a bigger change in route to see more grounded routes, rather than some challenge's gimmick being heavily ignored because of one strategy seen in other runs before.

4:01 in fact the threshold is so big that the game basically considers a portal being in view at all enough to funnel in a lot of cases.

"Can't Even" has a playlist of speedrun tutorials on his channel. Some stuff is outdated, but it's good as a starting ground.
That said, I don't really have any plans to do a tutorial myself. But who knows? If there's demand, I might.

The mod would have to be rebuilt to work on the newer versions of Portal 2, sorry. Recent updates broke it. I might do that eventually.

Grass is portalable for a very unintentional reason. Any surface without a %noportal flag is portalable, and textures from other valve games without said flag are all portalable, because they don't have %noportal markings.
That would be true for Portal 1, but not for Portal 2, where surfaces are non-portalable by default. Grass is portalable because it's a displacement. Displacement textures are exceptions to the rule and are typically portalable unless specified otherwise.
@@PortalRunner surfaces are portalable by default in P2. The P2CE team once considered making everything portalable by default but scrapped the idea because of base P2.
