How is the claim that this is a test of Job to be squared with the supposed omniscience of this God? And how is it possible that Satan doesn't know that God is all-knowing and that it is therefore futile to bet against him? Is it possible that the people who made up the story of Job didn't believe that God was all-knowing?
No. Job was tortured unnecessarily and had his hard earned possessions taken away by an all loving god just so he could win a meaningless bet with satan and then proceeded to bribe Job at the end to keep him quiet.
Job is totally bewildered. He knows he has not done anything different from what he has been doing all these years when he was profoundly blessed. The whole story is an antidote to the idea that those who suffer must have sinned. The teachings of karma and rebirth are that all suffering is caused by “sin” or “bad karma,” if not in this life then in previous ones. The Bible teaches that suffering can have a cause beyond us personally. When Jesus healed a blind man he was asked, “Who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” Jesus answered, “Neither. It was for the glory of God that he was born blind.” John 9:1-5 (KJV) 1 And as [Jesus] passed by, he saw a man which was blind from [his] birth. 2 And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? 3 Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. 4 I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work. 5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.
So are you cool with someone killing you as a test for someone else? Job's children and servants were killed in this story (1:13--19), not just loss of his livestock and possessions. All for something this silly: ua-cam.com/video/wjkdynBFHuQ/v-deo.html I guess those servants should have been more careful who they worked for. And those kids should have been more careful who their dad was. It's why I stay away from people who are blameless and upright, who fear God and turn away from evil. That'll get you deaded.
Death will come for us all and as Christians we know death is not the end. Our lives are just small specks in space and time, and God with His lovingkindness and mercy (even though we arent perfect or deserving of it) gave us a chance to have eternal life, peace, and joy in His Kingdom through His Son if we are faithful to Him through all sufferings till death.
@@elijahandregilos6153 His kids and his servants were going to die eventually. That's not the point. The point is that they were killed not only not for anything they'd done, but to test the faith of... someone else. Note that getting deaded is indeed a bad thing even within this story; deading Job himself was the one restriction imposed on Satan in 1:12, and also in 2:6 when the intro is largely repeated, not suspicious at ALL of old stories being spliced together, no sir not one bit. The presumption in the story is that these were HIS kids and HIS servants, so in removing his possessions, it was fair game to outright kill them. We see the same psychotic, twisted thinking in the story of Abraham being told to murder his son in cold blood, as if Isaac had no rights or existence outside of being Abraham's son, or David and Bathsheba's son being killed for David's sin. There's a presumption of possession that's absolutely abhorrent today, where slights on children and servants are not against they themselves, but against their owners. Not convinced? We see further evidence of this twisted thinking at the end of Job, 42:10--17. Job's fortunes are restored twofold, including getting 7 new sons and 3 new daughters. All's well that ends well, right? Full restoration for killing all of his earlier kids, right? All good, dunno why I'm even complaining, is the logic you'd never employ ANYWHERE else.
@@grumpylibrarian, the penalty of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life. The scriptures reveal that these people will live again. This is a reason I believe aborted children will also "live again", for they were unique human beings, living on the breath of life taken in by their mother. Now there's something abhorrent as a practice in our society, today. The Bible reveals a plan for all mankind, but most of Christianity does not teach it. God did not kill Job's children, Satan did. God was not going to allow Isaac to be sacrificed. Either Abraham would not have obeyed (Isaac lives), or Abraham would have obeyed, and did,, but God stopped him (Isaac lives). I cannot explain the immediate value of why God caused David's son to die, but that son will live again. He also believed God's promises, so he knew God would have to resurrect his son, shortly, if he died. Think of all the wars that have taken the lives of millions. God allows that (first three chapters of the Bible), but God did not cause it. These people will live again and the circumstances will be such that they, too, can choose God's way of life. Your comments are insightful to me, but God requires us to accept all He shows us to do and obey, not just some of it. The lessons from Job are some of the most important, foundational, lessons God gives to you and me for understanding the rest of the Bible. God, Himself, destroyed all but 8 of mankind and explained it was because of the corruption of mankind, but God know they will all live again. That may sound trite, but you have to appreciate what the written word reveals about the intended destiny of mankind, and how God wants children who, by choice, become so, submitting themselves to God's creative ability to form them into godly children. All the best to you.
