    I think those Japanese ones in the beginning that you didn't like because they tasted phenolic were actually coffee *tea* candies (based on the packaging) 珈琲茶飴 - literally "coffee tea candy". Likely, coffee mixed with hōjicha. Personally, I really like the bitter leafy quality of those but I can completely understand why they wouldn't pass the test.

      @@Keex11 Green tea Kit Kat, the dark chocolate version from Japan, is waaaaaay better than any Kit Kat in NA. Got to remember that in Japanese Kit Kats, they do use some genuine ingredients. There is real green tea in japanese green tea Kit Kat. There is real bits of strawberries in japanese straberry Kit Kat. There is none of that in the NA versions. I say NA, because I'm from Canada and we pretty much get the same flavours as those in the US, sadly.

    The pocket coffee reaction was hilarious! but seriously, the biting was a mistake. I have several times did the old trick of carefully biting one side off just to drink the coffee and then eat the chocolate and doing that you realize that the coffee is way more bitter than it should be and the chocolate is extremely sweet. It is meant to be eaten as a single bite to let both complement each other. try it, even off camera, the experience is way better that way.

    Here in Canada, Coffee Crisp is pretty divisive. There's not really anyone who thinks it's just okay; you're either a lover or a hater. I think it's delicious, but you're right that the coffee flavor isn't especially strong. But I think that makes it a little more accessible to those who aren't coffee fans, especially kids. I hated coffee as a kid, but this was always one of my favourite candy bars.

    • @Blutzen
      @Blutzen 5 місяців тому +2

      I just don't know why you would try to make a coffee candy accessible to non coffee drinkers, it doesn't make any sense to me. If you don't like coffee then don't eat it, and let the people who _do_ like coffee have an actually coffee-forward candy.

    • @curseyoujordanshow
      @curseyoujordanshow 5 місяців тому +7

      @@Blutzen Simply put, money.
      I take your point, and there are plenty of different products out there that target all different types of people. If you want something that only a coffee lover would appreciate, I'm sure you can find it. But looking at it purely from a business standpoint, broadening your product's appeal and thus its customer base nets you more profit. Again, this isn't exactly a high-end product; we're just talking about candy, and nobody loves candy more than kids, so it makes sense to include them in who you're catering to.

    As a German, the Werther's Original Coffee labeled as American confused me a bit at first. Werther's Original is a German brand of caramel candies, named after the town of Werther, but the coffee version doesn't actually exist here in Germany as far as I can tell. Also Scho-Ka-Kola is an absolute classic, my stepdad would always have a tin on hand for long car drives. The dark chocolate one is indeed the better by far, you barely see the milk chocolate ones, and I'm pleased it got reasonably far.
    We also have little coffee beans made out of dark chocolate with some slight coffee flavour here, they're not that special in terms of flavour to be fair, but at least fun because of the shape. Also very popular as cake decoration.

    • @Annika9517
      @Annika9517 5 місяців тому +3

      Yeah but the Werthers are still all produced in Germany. According to Storcks website they don't have a production outside of Germany. So it is definitely German candy.
      Loacker for example has a factory in South Tyrol/Italy and one in East Tyrol/Austria. And they produce Matcha flavour and Cheese flavour too. They don't exist in the European market (at their own shops nowadays you can buy it) since they are produced for overseas. It doesn't change the origin of the company and product though.

      Werther's (Original) are so ubiquitous here in the US, and were a BIG force in TV ads during my childhood ~20+ years ago that I thought by now that they would *actually be* American. It was almost impossible to watch network TV and not see a Werther's advert! I was aware as a small child (name? trade dress of the bag? reading the bag?) that they were actually of German manufacture, but I guess my brain assumed that they would have been resold (American branch only) and now made here, or in China for us to eat.
      I'm curious: that oval one-sided donut shape with a divot is a completely distinctive shape for Werther's; no other candy has a similar shape at all, so I knew this was by them, even though I've never seen a marbled product by them, or knew that they made anything beyond Original. Is it a common shape in the domestic German market?

I always find it starts a bit bitter then gets a creamy flavor as it goes. I don't enjoy hard candy much but this is one of the few exceptions.
    Mint is one of my favorite flavors in general, especially in ice cream. I really enjoy it in coffee as well. While you dislike mint in coffee, I dislike cinnamon. I really like cinnamon things but man it just does noooooot work with coffee's flavor.

In Mexico you can get them in any town where they produce coffee, but there are some that use a really nice chocolate that give balance in the flavors. Hello from Ukraine👋
    I used to make caramel candies like this at home and sell them at school. I had some success before Russia invaded the country in 2014 and all the prices tripled instantly. My teacher at a private language school owned a bar/restaurant, and when she tried my candies, she was ready to buy in bulk regularly. However, the only condition was that I had to make them in the shape of a coffee bean. I searched all over the internet but couldn’t find any silicone molds matching the needed size and shape, so I never sold them a batch. I am pretty sure they would have recommended me to other cafes, and I could have had a pretty nice business as a 12-year-old kid, lol. Later, I switched to reselling stuff from AliExpress and eventually pursued a career as a software engineer. In the end, I don’t regret much. Learning English and Math ended up being more beneficial for me.
    Fun random fact: right after the invasion, Petro Poroshenko (the founder of the brand of the candy-winner) had become our president until 2019

    I think there's always two categories when it comes to coffee and coffee products.
    1. What coffee drinkers enjoy
    2. What casual/non coffee drinkers enjoy
    I imagine most coffee candies cater more to the latter group.

    I think you missed my favorite coffee candy of all time and it happens to be from Japan. Meiji’s Coffee Beat. They are small hard shell chocolates in the shape of a coffee bean. It’s not gourmet coffee, but kind of this lovely smooth coffee taste that isn’t acidic. The crunch on the outside is light and perfect! And the chocolate-coffee mix, in my opinion, is fantastic. It’s one of my favorite Japanese candies. I typically don’t like coffee flavored candy.
