Hope to see you get back to this some time! And I hope you haven't been getting blocked if you've been trying to.
    A couple snippets:
The bassist is Dave LaRue (lah-ROO), and he played bass on John's first solo album in 2005 as well.
The reason that John chose Mike Portnoy here was because, as stated by John, he always wanted his solo projects to be separate from Dream Theater, hence a different drummer and bassist from DT on his solo albums; in 2005, obviously, they were in the band together. But this time around, Portnoy was not part of Dream Theater, and as such, was able to play with John again.
As far as "playing with" John, each of the three members actually tracked each of their parts separately. Despite the usual perfect synchronicity and organic sound, they didn't actually play with each other in the studio on this album. I believe John wrote and recorded all his parts first, then Dave on bass, and Mike was the last to record.
There is a moment on the song "Snake in My Boot" where you can actually hear John and Mike laughing; Mike was recording a part when John did a ridiculous walk into the room while smacking a cowbell, and they left the laughs in the final take. So while they didn't get to play and record at the same time in the studio, they did get to spend time together there.
And finally, three of the tracks on this album have actually been written and played by John before, but never for a studio version. "Gemini" comes from as far back as the '90s (I believe 1994), "Happy Song" was previously played live as "Cloud Ten", and "Glassy-Eyed Zombies" has been performed with Mike Mangini on the kit, even appearing during G3. The rest of the songs are new original compositions.

Thanks for the information! I have heard the Happy Song regrettably, because it came up on a Dream Theater playlist and I didn't know what it was until it was too late. It was an awesome song!
I hope to be back soon but work is crazy and I'm completely exhausted after work. The weekends are equally as busy because I have to catch up on things I've been neglecting throughout the work week, so there really isn't a time to record or stream at the moment.

@@Aetherial-Gamer It's worth listening to all three even for a reaction video, even if you've heard any of them before. There's a section on Gemini that John added on specifically for this studio recording, that was never played in any of his live showings.
Glassy-Eyed Zombies and Happy Song also have a different feel with Portnoy on the kit compared to the live versions, as well as what I personally consider improved solos with very clear direction. I imagine it's because he only ever played them live, but at least those two songs always had pretty varied solo sections, even if the meat of the song remained mostly the same. John removed some of the improv style in favor of very intentional writing, as is what you would typically expect from him on a recording; I'm interested to see if he plays closer to studio in the future, or continues to improvise them.
That reminds me of another tidbit where I read that John stated when he crafts a minute and a half long solo, like in the Terminal Velocity track, he is very meticulous about his writing as he doesn't want the listener to get bored of it. That definitely shows when comparing the style of the three studio recordings to previous live performances. I think you can hear that "concreteness" that he wanted for the recording.
