    the author does like to from scratch, shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxD-QRFQz730FJEh4f9BYSf-nkIMIC9hL_ as another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us dont have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we wont be able to practice the full stack project, is still great.

    Hi Jim. Banksia is pronounced as BANK C AH. .. You have done a beautiful job of one of our national botanical treasures. Banksia plants were named after Sir Joseph Banks , botanist on HMS Endeavour captained by James Cook in 1770.

      And the Banksia flower is magnificent!
      Latin name: "Banksia Serrata".
      Serrata for the serated teeth on the leaves.
      G'day, from Sydney Australia 🇦🇺 🦘

      BTW, by the time that the damaged Endeavour limped into what is now known as Botany Bay, the crew were on "hard tack" rations, having run out of fresh & preserved meat and vegetables.
      At that time "Botany Bay " was very different
      Sir Joseph Banks, the official Botanist was ashore collecting plant specimens, Captain Cook had the task of feeding his men as quickly as possible.
      He saw thousands of Stingrays in the shallows, easy targets for boat-hooks and had not yet named it Botany Bay. In his original journal, you can see where "Stingray Bay" was replaced with "Botany Bay", due to the "other world" Flora & Fauna being found!
      Interesting!

    At one point during this video you mentioned the possibility of using this piece as a pencil holder. You are a very modest man, which is so sweet. But although your creations could be utilitarian, they are foremost works of art. They can stand alone and be admired for their aesthetic. A pencil holder! Good lord, no! ☺

    @Sprague Wood turning, l liked the Banksia Pod Vase video and I tried Pinecones as a vase & I'm very happy how it came out & gave it to my wife so she could give it to her grandma as a birthday present! Her grandma had a beautiful vase and someone broke into her home & stole everything and even the vase her late husband gave her & found old photo scrap book pictures and saw the same vase that was taken from her! And I spent many nights planning on how to recreate the same vase and that was a lot of work & my wife wasn't even upset or mad that I spended more time in my workshop and to make it short!!...the vase came out beautiful and it's sitting in the dining room in our home! Her grandma is now living with us and she can't continue being by herself and I suggested that she lives with us and my wife thought that was a great idea and loves spending time with her & going shopping and going to the hair salon and what ever makes her happy & it's totally fine with me!!

    For me the key to resin/wood turning is the amount of resin vs. wood. Usually with banksia pods there is more resin than pods, because they use whole pods. By cutting them into chunks the relationship and the look is entirely different. Great choice on your part. Thanks again for a great video.

      There used to be 3 trees on a walk I used to do with the dog, the woody remains of the flower cone used to end up being littered on the ground, we do have some fabulous native trees and flora. Sadly those trees succumbed to flooding, got waterlogged and died. I did polish up the woody seed cones/pods to add to native display, yes I agree they are very unusual wood.

    This piece makes me think of what Earth must have been going through when the "Big Bang" was on the cooling side of creation. Still remnants of lava-like heat ready to get upset if it wasn't able to be left alone to just chill, and cool down in it's own way, in it's own time. As if there was life still perculating ...much like a fine cup of coffee in old fashioned coffee pot, on a campfire. Just let it finish "brewing", and Viola!! This is what you'd see. Creation on the chilling side of what just happened. LoL grin 😊. Yer making me think and see so many different things in your artwork, it's great to imagine such things. My experience, from building a 23' wood and epoxy boat, is that foam and epoxy application don't mix. Microfiber applicator is required. Try applying with a chip brush and then smooth with microfiber cloth. I used a microfiber roller and then tipped smooth with a brush. Also, you might want to thin the top coat of epoxy as it self levels without bubbles a lot easier.

    I agree. The iridescent sheen created by the pearl colors is fantastic and makes everything you create look even more amazing with a little touch of magical.
    I like how the resin settled and made the green float all through the red and just create a really organic transition between the two colors.
    Btw, the voids were not caused by the seeds not being there, they were caused by material obstruction in the pods. Basically, the pods had holes surrounded by pod. You'll find that a lot with parts of the plants that aren't weight-bearing like stems, trunks and branches. Chances are, those voids were much more wet than other parts of the pod, so the drying process shrunk the material down so much that a noticeable void was created.
    Btw, trimming a foam piece can cause it to leave pieces behind. There is a much rarer risk of factory-fresh foam pieces doing this, but a home trim will increase that risk by a LOT. I think part of the problem is that the exterior of a foam piece always looks different from the interior, and exposing that interior exposes a weaker, more void-filled part of the foam and causes it to fail more.

    Damn Jim, this piece looks fantastic and despite my absolute love for wood and wood grain, I think that this has taken the top spot for pieces you've done - the resin flowed really cool around the pods and the pods them selves have a beautiful colour and texture.
    As to the actual smoothness/quality on the outside, I wouldn't do another coat, I'd get some seriously fine sand paper, like 1200> and try to get it as smooth as I could, then use polishing compounds to get the shine back.

    • @SpragueWoodturning
      @SpragueWoodturning  2 роки тому +3

      Glad to see the non resin lovers coming around, lol. The only problem with sanding this piece, if you break through the resin to the pods it will cause dull spots. Thanks for watching!

    For such jobs, you need a vacuum chamber(you can make it from 6panels of an inch or more thick Plexi glass to see inside and a vacuum pump). And even if you don't reach a decent vacuum with it, it will still mostly eradicate all the large and small pores in your work and impregnate the wood surface deep, making finishing it quick and easy

    Thanks Jim, for another great project. The finished vase is a true masterpiece! I would like to purchase a Steady Rest like the one you have. It will sure make it much better and safer when turning deep bowls or vases. Do you have a source for it? I look forward to your reply and to your future projects. Peter

      Many thanks! There are lots on the market, just do a google search for steady rests and there should be lots of options. My son made this one when he was in high school. Thanks

    Its funny, Im a Australian and love the Banksia, the tree itself isnt what most people would call beautiful, the flowers that grow on it are to die for, the seed pod you have I would have considered ugly unwanted part of the tree, so its nice to see someone actually make something thats beautiful from them.

    Seeing this finished it is gorgeous. You should consider doing something similar and make a lamp out or it. Like the base of a lamp and put a shade on it and everything like a table lamp. But put some lighting inside the base or vase of the lamp. With a non dense reins and not thick walls, then put some led lighting or the old flicker bulbs inside it. I am just seeing the resin illuminated as a night light on a bedroom night stand. I mean it is a stunning vase and you are very talented. I certainly do not mean to turn this one into a lamp but to make one along the lines. I think it would pop at night just as much as the day.
    I have made a few knives in the past and I have seen people make knife scales out of pine cones too using resin like this. I only have a very amuture Shopsmith lathe(don't laugh) but you are making me to want to get back into this hobby. Using resin your mind really is the only limit on what you could turn. I did come across a large old school pressure cooker at a thrift store a while back and I grabbed it thinking I might want to make a pressure or vacuum chamber to stabilize some spalted almost rotten wood for knife handles and turning. You can get some real pretty wood out of a old piece of firewood left laying on the ground. Really this came out amazing.

    I like how the lights reflections are thin lines, at first when it was rough it was like a sound wave constantly moving, but as the coats flattened out, so did the lines. If you can set up a monitor to watch these line when finishing these pieces, they would act as a really good gauge of the surface imperfections.

    • @SpragueWoodturning
      @SpragueWoodturning  2 роки тому

      Don’t totally follow you on this? I really liked how the resin flowed around the pods and you can see it in the beginning when I first get it trued up at the start. This however wasn’t the profile I was going for. Thanks

    • @Ghost_moto_WPN
      @Ghost_moto_WPN 2 роки тому

      @@SpragueWoodturning I wish I could reply with screenshots , side by side it is very obvious. When you put the first coat finish coat of resin on, you can see thin white lines reflecting off the surface (the reflections from your shop lights - fluorescent tubes I presume). The lines go squiggly like ramin noodles and constantly move up and down kinda like a lie detector test but smaller with peaks and valleys. On your second coat these lines move less because the surface is smoothing out. By the last coat the lines are almost perfectly straight like pasta and barely moves and has nearly no squiggles because the surface is so smooth and nearly perfectly flat. It is the closest thing I can think of as a visual representation of what your fingers may feel.
      Side note: This is my favourite project you have done yet.

      @@Ghost_moto_WPN Yes I follow you now. The first coat didn’t layout very flat and the others did.

    I like the fact that you use carbide tools and do such a beautiful job. It seems so many turners look down their noses at carbide tools, but you show it's not the tool but the artist that makes a project. What a beautiful project it is too.

    • @SpragueWoodturning
      @SpragueWoodturning  2 роки тому +1

      You are 100% correct, carbide is an aid, it’s up to the turner to make it happen. I am a firm believer that if your going to be a turner you need to master the gouge but when it comes to resin, carbide is where it at! Thanks!
