    I have the sneaking suspicion they use slimline floppy drives reclaimed from laptops for these things.

    Where I live, there's a computer store that deals with a lot of Sabrent products. I've bought two 3.5 inch hard drive usb enclosures, and both of them failed within 3 months by suddenly not being able to supply enough power to the drive, even though they both use external wall power supplies and the drives were of the "green" eco friendly variety. I've also used usb video capture boxes (one worked, one didn't), and a usb hub which worked but supplied low power. I think it's safe to say their products are hit or miss, and buying one is like playing russian roulette.

      but be careful most modern mainboards dont have the connector for floppys. And i dont know if you can add a floppy controller card. I've seen some, but many people say the floppy controller is one of these things you CANT add with cards. Dont know if that is really true

    • @Halterung01

      if you believe it or not, on some AMD AM3+ boards its still there. and the processors for these boards (FX series) are pretty inexpensive and give you good performance for their price.

      TheRailroad99 - Some older SCSI expansion boards had an onboard floppy disk controller (usually with 2.88 MB support!) and it's possible that one of those might be used. To be utilized as a boot device, any such card would need an option ROM or a system BIOS that's "smart" enough to go looking for a floppy disk controller in the right I/O address ranges. If someone's making an expansion card that is just a floppy disk controller, that's news to me.
      As almost every low pin count I/O controller out there still contains floppy disk controller logic, I don't know why the motherboard makers don't just bring it out for anyone who might want to use it. It's not like it would cost much of anything. Same thing with legacy ports. Just put the pin headers on the board. It's cheap and there's certainly room for them.

    I bought a no-name version of this product for use in a Dell Dimension E521. I've never actually installed it for a variety of reasons, but maybe I should have in order to test it? Oh well.

    one thing I have done on a few builds that have limited drive bays, or no 3.5 inch bay...I bought a 5.25 to 3.5 adapter that has a slim optical opening as well. That was able to accommodate a laptop style optical drive (I prefer the slot loading drives) and a card reader, and an existing 3.5 bay could be used for a floppy drive.

      If you should happen to come across a dirt cheap USB floppy drive - even one that's mechanically damaged - you might be able to cannibalise the USB-to-floppy board inside, and hook up a floppy drive in this manner?

    Sabrent products for me have been extremely hit or miss. their cables are great quality, but their Hard drive USB enclosures aren't super good and their laptop USB hub is super flimsy and mine broke within like a week because it's extremely easy to go past the stops because the plastic is cheap.

    These Sabrent combo drives suck. I think it’s down to the circuit board. I had a working TEAC external USB floppy drive, same model as what’s in a Sabrent drive, and put it in the Sabrent drive for testing. I hooked it up, it wouldn’t get detected either. Fortunately, I was able to rebuild my TEAC drive, no harm no foul. I have since bought a combo drive from SIIG that I haven’t installed but I’m pretty sure will work. Also, these combo drives are getting expensive for some reason.

    only problem is that windows 10 has decided that the reader itself is a "removable" device, and so i can addidently eject the reader itself and then i cant use it at all until i reboot the computer

I mean I repair stuff myself as well, but when you buy something it's supposed to work the way it's advertised and it's the sellers responsibility to make that happen (or did it say "DIY repair kit - No tools needed" in the listing haha)

      I have an old Fujifilm digital camera from 2004 that only takes "xD Picture Cards". It came with a whopping 16 MB (yes, megabyte) card, and I was drooling over the 512 MB one that cost more than the camera itself. It could take 16 photos at 3 megapixels, so I mostly took photos in VGA, 122 of which could fit on that card. Those were the days.

    Wow I didn't even know a thing called Memory Stick Pro Duo existed, definitely reminds me of the mess AMD made this year, the overpriced Radeon Pro Duo. You can get almost same performance for 2/3 the price by putting two Fury Nanos in CrossFire, heck even two Fury Xs in CrossFire can beat the Pro Duo for less money.
    NVidia GeForce GTX Titan X Pascal is the best single card performer you can get anyway.

    Could be scavenged floppy drives, I have a few things from China before that had scavenged 16850 cells in them , seems china likes using used parts and putting them into new cases to sell them off as new.

    Did you try os X with the memory stick?

      This is a PC, not a Mac.

      Did you try it with a OLD Mac?

    • @vwestlife

      It wouldn't work. Mac use completely different interfaces.

    • @fyredragon2816

      Right. If they used the same interface, would you use it?

      No, because Apple never made a computer with a standard 3.5" drive bay cutout on the front.

    Blah, it would be worth something if the entire thing was powered by USB, but considering it still needs the ancient 34pin parallel bus, I pass...

      I don't know why it hasn't occurred to someone that they ought to do this. The logic clearly exists for USB floppy drives, after all!

    • @dlarge6502
      @dlarge6502 8 років тому

      Bear in mind that USB floppy drives are not 'real' floppy drives. The controller sits behind the USB connection and then entire thing appears as a USB mass storage device. This basically means that the logic in the drive can only support IBM PC formatted discs (I'm speaking of the low level formatting here). If you wish to try to use tools that can program the floppy controller to let you read other disc formats such as Atari ST discs you will be out of luck as to the OS the USB floppy looks like a flash drive.
      It also makes it difficult to use recovery tools to attempt to recover bad sectors as they can not communicate with the controller.
      I found it really difficult recovering files from a mates old discs with the USB drive I had. Got myself some unused new old stock sony internal drives which worked much better.

      +dlarge6502 That's not the case for all USB floppy drives. I have one that can read and write to both IBM and Macintosh-formatted floppy disks.

    • @dlarge6502
      @dlarge6502 7 років тому

      All that confirms is the emulated usb mass storage device provided by that particular drive supports mac discs. Its still emulated and I would be surprised if you can read and write an acorn disc when you plug it into a raspberry pi running Risc OS 5.

      So a floppy drive that connects to the motherboard with a USB isn't the same as one that uses the 34 pin ribbon cable? Why does the cable make a difference?
