I skippered this boat for nine years. 91-2000. Good to see her still extant. And good to see she still has the rope work I did at the wheel and hand hold. We did charter in the Caribbean, Spain, New England and finally sailed her to New Zealand for the Millennium.
Wow! I think this boat is CRAZY AWESOME! I love all the storage and wood work. I think this sailboat would be a super fun fixer upper. I hope whoever purchases this boat will start a UA-cam channel because I would love to follow the full remodel. GreatJob showing us this one. PeaceAndLove Lori
First, those containers on the back were for storing scuba cylinders upright. Now for the boat. It is way overpriced for its year and the amount of work it will take to repair all the damage. Don't get me wrong, this is actually my favorite Privilege layout. I am currently looking for a privilege just like this one...But for 224k, it needs to be in good shape (I.E. ready to cruise with no work needed). This vessel needs a massive amount of work. Walls, headliners, floors, rot repair, est all need to be addressed. I have not seen this vessel personally, but from your video, I saw most of the interior will need to be addressed, evidence of lots of leaking, and what appeared to be rot on the stbd hatch lips in the bow. The lifelines need attention, the tramps and tramp ropes should be looked at, minimal solar, no davits, est. That was from a quick video. Imagine what you will find when you survey??? We haven't even got into the fact that it probably needs bottom and top paint, standing rigging, running rigging, sails, batteries, electronics, rebedded windows, est. I know it's a seller's market, but common on. Really? I am pretty sure I researched this boat over a year ago. There is probably a reason it's still on the market. Its biggest problem is not even all the work it needs, it's the vessel age. You cannot compare this vessel to another newer 48' cat. Because of the age differences, they are apples and oranges. This vessel cannot be financed...I.E. you have to have 224k cash, plus another 50-100k for repairs/upgrades. If you buy this boat and do all the repairs, you will have a great boat...but you will probably have 275k+ into it (at its current selling price) and if you ever decide to sell it, the next buyer will have to be willing to layout even more cash for a boat that they, in turn, will have trouble selling. It is not easy to find a buyer like that. For 275+, you can find a much newer cat in better shape that can be financed and will be much easier to sell in the future if the need arises. I have flipped boats for a while now. Owners need to come to terms with the expected value of their boat vs real-world value. Length is only one small part of the equation. Age, condition, resale, location, and size must all be considered when buying a boat. Too many people impulse buy or get a crappy broker that just wants to make a quick commission. In my opinion, this boat is worth 100-120k, and that is generous. Before everybody starts flaming me with ads for 500k 48' cats, every one of those cats can be financed, insured, and resold relatively easily. That increases their values immensely. The buyer pool with 224k cash to spend on a 33-year-old boat that needs a massive amount of work is very small. And, that 224k can be a down payment making the 500k have affordable payments. Even if you get the privilege for 100k and keep the repairs below 50k, you will still be hard pressed to find a person that actually has 150K liquid cash to spend on a 33yo boat, especially right now. Again, I love this boat layout and if I thought the owner and I could get close on a price, I would have already made an offer. But, my offer would literally be 100k or less (depending on the survey). When the asking price is 220k, it's hard to lowball that much. I will keep watching the vessel and see how much it eventually drops. If somebody pays the ridiculous price, I will chuckle at another sucker ripped off and move on. I enjoyed the video, thanks for making it and keep up the great work.
That looked like water damage to the woodwork aft of the nav station as you were going into the starboard hull. The layout is nice with the exception of the center cabin/"day head" being all the way up in the starboard bow. Since you didn't show the engine rooms, one has to assume that they're completely gutted. . With all the work that needs to be put into this cat to make her into a nice cruiser it is _WAY_ over priced. Even $75k might be a bit much depending on the survey.
Both engines are completely functioning, The tour person did not have the keys. Yanmar 36hp. Also in the starboard engine room is the watermaker and scuba compressor.
I have a similar model to this yacht. As a liveaboard I can confirm it is very comfortable. We converted 2 of the 4 heads to a a laundry and full size shower. The outdoor area is amazing for entertaining. A seat on a pedestal was put at the helm and has perfect visibility to all four corners. The helm isn’t protected, but when on passage the inside plotter allows easy control to the autopilot and the outside chartplotter can be utilised for docking or coastal sailing when the weather is nicer. We routed all lines back to the cockpit - safer on passage. The price on this one is a little high though. It will need at least 200k to bring it to seaworthy. Speaking from experience 😎
When I watch these walk through videos, I start building a price in my mind as to what I think it might sell for. By the time he got done, I was thinking $100K. And a bit hard to judge since we didn't see the engines, but that felt about right. After reading the many comments, perhaps I was high at that! This boat may have good bones, but it needs SO much work, and the comments about what you CAN'T see are right on. All plumbing and electrical will need to be completely gone through, and if not replaced recently replaced now. That is a pain in the butt on these old boats. Tramps, lifelines and stanchions (one was clearly bent), running and standing rigging, engines, etc. SO much to do!
Engines are great working order, port recently rebuilt. Both transmissions are brand new, both prop shafts and props are new. Bottom fully redone down to base coat. Plumbing all replaced 7 years ago, all heads function perfectly. Electrical has been gone through and is fully functional including new lights on deck/mast. This boat is very seaworthy. The exterior needs paint, the trampolines need replaced the standing rigging is solid. I would sail her back across the Atlantic and into the islands no questions asked.
@@deanperry4796 I understand pride of ownership, and there have been some very harsh comments here. It's easy for us "armchair" brokers/sailors to comment without having done a proper walkthrough. I think even with your clarification of the upgrades, the market is telling you where the price should be. Have you had any offers? What have they been? You could silence all the doubters here by saying you've received 5 offers over $200K. But I suspect that's not the case. I think we all wish you luck. I am a huge believer in refurbishing and restoring old boats since fiberglass hulls can last forever and this one deserves another life.
*The owner would have to be EXTREMELY flexible on the price. With that much work and the other issues I have for that boat (after going to the Brokers website) ... Owner would have to almost remove that first "2" after the "$" sign for this boat to come close to meeting my needs.* *It's going to cost $300K plus, just to gut the interior, repair the cabin leaks, and start over on the interior alone.* (I noticed that we didn't even get to the engines, tankage, sails, etc.) *Unless someone really falls in love with this design ... In a normal "For Sale" market ... I'd say, it's worth about $60k to $75k.* *Then again ... Boats being in short supply right now ... may be why the price is outrageous for a vessel in this condition.* _DISCLAIMER: This is solely my opinion ... based on a lifetime of yacht ownership, maintenance and sailing over 2/3 of the globe. Just wanted to respectfully note that you have become a real estate agent for the yachting industry in order to support your channel. We respect that but are very anxious to see more on the rebuild of your trimaran and some more videos of you and Randi using it. I like it because it would be a great coastal cruiser. Let me close by saying you are an inspiration to my wife and I. We have been with you since you got Freebie, in our mid seventies and health has delegated us to now being spectators. God bless you, your family and your efforts.
I agree. The early episodes showing all the work to restore and maintain told the best story. Let’s go back to seeing your boat restoration and some family sailing.
Thanks for the walkthrough... Very interesting layout. WAY overpriced for the condition. I'd say the price would be spot on if it was in excellent condition, but it's nowhere close to that.
For a 33yr old boat, which is obviously a tired charter boat, I personally think they are asking too much money for it. It is a project and needs a lot of work to update.
I always liked what Ross Perot said when he ran for President. "My daddy told me to take care of my pennies and the dollars will take care of themselves." The way the small things have not been maintained....I would worry about the larger more expensive items. I love the layout of the boat....but I do think for the year and being a "project" boat...the price is way too high.
Good layout for cruising with family and friends. Wish I had the money and time to restore such a classic and update a few things. A canvas enclosure and a helm Bimini would greatly improve its cruising comfort for fouler weather and long passages. Might need a little more headroom.
I agree with most comments. The engines and respective engine compartments, represent anywhere from near nothing to $200 grand by themselves. A/C condition? Water maker? Air compressor for the scuba? Sail gear condition? Standing rigging condition? Sorry brother, but you miss hit this one. I actually like the layout with much potential to modify, but would need details. Many, many details.
I don't know if this is a helpful suggestion, but I would benefit from seeing you carry a tape measure or yard stick where you could show the width of doorways, counters, and berths. The camera distorts with a wide angle lens, and every doorway looks like I would have to squeeze my fat butt through them. If you could do a quick doorway is 26 inches, or something like that, I think it would be more detailed and useful. Not a huge problem, just something that maybe you'd think about. Thanks for the channel. Regards to Randi.
Love the boat ... including the 5 double bunks ... but price seems very high to my mind. Some defects that i see include: 1. Yes the whole boat looks tired. Looks solid but tired. 2. Headrooms throughout seem a little low 3. Doorways seem narrow. Hard to imagine moving an injured person onto or off the boat. 4. Not sure at all about the electrical system / wiring Thank you though for another interesting presentation.
Kinda what I was about to say too. I like the layout per se, but unprotected helm and many areas that need TLC, what was visible of the mainsail looked like it needed replacing too... $224k is far too much. $100k might be realistic - IF engine and everything else is in good condition.
Sailing Zatara is a Privilege and has a much better design on a slightly bigger boat. Much too high a price for all the work needed to modernise this one.
In addition to missing the engines, I didn't see any facility for laundry. It's a weird design and needs a ton of work, but at a low enough price it could be a fun enterprise.
That was very interesting; not my cup of tea but in a few years she will be turning heads. A bargain basement boat without a bargain basement price; I think they need to take the first 2 out.
The squeaky floors makes me wonder if there may be problems if you look deeper. Likely be doing serious fiberglass repairs in very hard to reach places.
The price is absolutely ridiculous. It is a 33 year old boat (and with a cat that is even more ancient than a similar age mono). If it were 20 years newer (still an old boat btw) it still would be too much. The layout for these old cats are not very efficient. You would be better off with an early 2000s 42-44 footer which would have just as much usable space. I am actually a fan of Privilege's. They are well built. I actually really like this boat but you would have 100k into it before you even realized it, even doing a lot of the work yourself. Sorry, but not even at half that price. If I am going to devote 2 years of my life fixing it up, I want to have some sweat equity at the end.
I really like the layout except for the wheel position, I'd rather have a single head separate shower in each hull, but the way the berths a laid out the space they are currently in is practically free. Am 6'2", am guessing I'd feel pretty cramped in this. Condition wise, no, not this one.
I am 6'3" and have spent years on this boat in comfort. The only low area is the door ways and each side of the main salon is a little lower but easy to adjust. With queen size beds easy sleeping room.
Sure wasted a ton of room in the salon. Very few folks need a settee for 25. The ex skipper kinda explains the neglect when saying she was chartered for so many years. Letting people on your boat that don't know or care much about boats can tear up many things in just a few days. Now compound that over decades.
Intriguing is the word I would use. Price lower and the remodel would be fun if you have enough cash for the second helm. Could we get a cameo from the rest of the family?
Interesting Cat and will meet someone's needs out there....eventually. But so many unknowns about it and a starting $225000 negotiating price is going to discourage needed prospects.
This boat would be a total remodel for me. Would probably be twice or more what they are asking for it just to make it a less cramped boat.. the whole top of the salon would need to be removed and opened up alot. I think I would build it to have a higher roof maybe model it after a Dufour cat.. like I said it would likely cost twice or more what they want for it now.
From inside, the visibility forward doesn't seems that good and you can't really keep an eyes on the sails as well. The helm is quit exposed for sure. Overall, $224,000 is kind of expensive for a renovation project.
Well... it has potential... but going to take a bit to realize that. Everything needs updating. Can assume electrical, Nav equipment, engine all need repair or replacing. Some water damage in walls and wood. Dingy is in front? Can’t sail like that. Day Head in bow locker needs removed. Bad placement for forward nav station. Poor use of interior space.
Any serious renovation of this boat is going to require more than $200,000 in order to make it Blue-Water-Worthy. Water damage, electrical updates, plumbing, reworking all of the cabins, solar... The engine rooms must be absolutely awful if you elected not to show them to us. This charter boat has been thoroughly used and abused. It's obviously set neglected for a while as well. This is an absolute money pit even after you buy it. The $225,000 asking price comes across as naive or wishful thinking on the part of the current owner. It's possible asking the owner to pay someone to take it off their hands might be a more likely to turn around.
Those are dive tank holders on the back. Its so sad to see that someone has abused that boat so bad. $224,000 is way too high for the boat in its current condition. I would hate to see what a sea trial and survey would reveal. Cant believe that people want to sell a boat and ask a huge price for it and dont bother to lift a finger to clean it up. It says volumes as to how they maintained the boat. On a different note.....you missed a lot about this boat. In the past you have been very thorough on your boat videos but ever since you guys took the road trip out west your videos have changed. You didnt even show the engines on this boat. Please take a minute and step back from your current production schedule and look back on your older videos. You seem to have lost interest in the little things on the boats and now just give a quick run through without the deep dive you used to do. I hope you return to the quality of your old videos.
@@rtbinc2273 yes i watched his whole video but would love to see him get reinspired to his old form! In days of old he would have gone through the boat with vim and vigor. He just seems to have lost the edge as of late.
You hear the term A “testament to the owner” not this one. What will all the rigging and engines be like. It would have to be very cheap. 100,000 subs and no technical information.
I wouldn’t want to be on this boat with more than one person. Everyplace on this boat is 2 feet wide. Hard for me to describe but two people couldn’t pass each other anywhere on her. New cats you would say have a open floor plan.
from what I sen on the video it needs a lot of work but all in all not a bad boat if the price is right for someone and this is coming from someone that hates catamarans lol.
This boat is an insult to the sea. It only works with a motor. The living room is shabby. Nothing justifies this price, far above its new price 30 years ago.
This boat is precisely why (as a hard-core, monohull sailor, for the better part of 70 years) I could never understand what would possess anyone to purchase an early catamaran. Poorly laid out, cramped accommodations, exposed helm... With the advent of contemporary, spacious, bright and airy cats, I get it. But this...this is everything that ever kept me from considering an earlier cruising cat. Quarter of a million???...pass!
Nice video, not so nice boat. I mean yeah it is chep but it needs a LOT of work and likely will cost every bit as much as a more expensive boat when it is done.

Would be surprised if there aren't more than a few concerns found.
How much was the selling price?
Port side "locker" is the generator.
Where is the link?
I really like the layout except for the wheel position, I'd rather have a single head separate shower in each hull, but the way the berths a laid out the space they are currently in is practically free. Am 6'2", am guessing I'd feel pretty cramped in this.
Condition wise, no, not this one.
I am 6'3" and have spent years on this boat in comfort. The only low area is the door ways and each side of the main salon is a little lower but easy to adjust. With queen size beds easy sleeping room.
That thing is huge!
Sure wasted a ton of room in the salon. Very few folks need a settee for 25. The ex skipper kinda explains the neglect when saying she was chartered for so many years. Letting people on your boat that don't know or care much about boats can tear up many things in just a few days. Now compound that over decades.
It’s funny to see how much cat design has changed over the past 30 years, especially when compared to monohulls.
She needs some love. This would be a good boat for 2 couples that were very close to buy it and fix it up for a good vacation boat.
Has a full boat feel as I like rather than modern apartment look you get with new cats.
Catamaran prices have gone bonkers if this is what you get for a quarter of a million bucks.
1:40 scuba tanks?
Scuba tank holders. Maybe a giant stride off that deck.
how much headroom , Jordan ?
You never did show the engines
Dive tanks are what those things on the back
This boat would be a total remodel for me. Would probably be twice or more what they are asking for it just to make it a less cramped boat.. the whole top of the salon would need to be removed and opened up alot. I think I would build it to have a higher roof maybe model it after a Dufour cat.. like I said it would likely cost twice or more what they want for it now.
I was waiting to see the engines. What about solar?
Well he showed solar panels at 3:03
@@inpurgatory Good catch. Thanks.
No doubt the engines are original diesel. Id replace them with electric motors.
It could look like a 90s boat cause it was a 89 & 1/2 a preview of the next generation of their boats
I know it's a sellers market and prices are up but jeez man, 200k too much.
How much does it cost to hire a Skipper?
Look like air tanks cradle. For scuba
Definitely a fixer upper, maybe a little too ambitious on the price?
Proof of the seller's market. 😉
Fenders?
From inside, the visibility forward doesn't seems that good and you can't really keep an eyes on the sails as well. The helm is quit exposed for sure.
Overall, $224,000 is kind of expensive for a renovation project.
Well... it has potential... but going to take a bit to realize that. Everything needs updating. Can assume electrical, Nav equipment, engine all need repair or replacing. Some water damage in walls and wood. Dingy is in front? Can’t sail like that. Day Head in bow locker needs removed. Bad placement for forward nav station. Poor use of interior space.
Cool cat!
I do wish you'd add the asking price on the boats you show.
It's always in the description.
Is it just me but there appears to be extremely limited forward vision from saloon and nav.station. - talk about flying/sailing blind.
Very cruel assessment site unseen. Price is high but still a great starter.
no deal here!
i have a 51 neel tri
Spaceship catamaran
with grandma's interior
The price lol....
I would say the broker is taking the Micky at £200k ($225k).
Fyi: Big freezer under nav station.
He was more in depth when he show less I wonder what's hiding for more on the boat I could give up the walk through at the end.
Well said.. Agreed.
Did you watch to the end, he covers most of what you say in his final comments. He comments it is an old charter boat so it was beat on.
@@rtbinc2273 yes i watched his whole video but would love to see him get reinspired to his old form! In days of old he would have gone through the boat with vim and vigor. He just seems to have lost the edge as of late.
224k for an 1989 project boat? lol
Scuba tanks!
i really like it, needs some redesigning and updating but i really like the exterior lines. way over priced
Didn’t see the engines…..lol
I got to wait till ....
I was waiting for you to say how "sweet she is," to confirm your blindness.
and sold - to absolutely no-one who posted here as saying it was worth less than $100K and would offer $60K - if they had it - of course lol
A vendre? Prix? Contact ?
Description! Sous la vidéo! Réponses à vos question!
224k? let me know when he'll take 50k...
If it was $100 grande It'd make you think about it.You could possibly stiff someone for $150
from what I sen on the video it needs a lot of work but all in all not a bad boat if the price is right for someone and this is coming from someone that hates catamarans lol.
50K!
This boat is an insult to the sea. It only works with a motor. The living room is shabby. Nothing justifies this price, far above its new price 30 years ago.
Those are for skubba tanks
This boat is precisely why (as a hard-core, monohull sailor, for the better part of 70 years) I could never understand what would possess anyone to purchase an early catamaran. Poorly laid out, cramped accommodations, exposed helm... With the advent of contemporary, spacious, bright and airy cats, I get it. But this...this is everything that ever kept me from considering an earlier cruising cat. Quarter of a million???...pass!
Dive tanks
Dive tanks holders .... on the back
$224,000 🤣😂🤣😂
Nice video, not so nice boat. I mean yeah it is chep but it needs a LOT of work and likely will cost every bit as much as a more expensive boat when it is done.
Looks janky. Was it repossessed?
its that tired it forgot to wake up !! 100,000 no more
For a 32 year old boat .. it's in decent shape.. not spectacular.. what about engines? That's critical
