- This day was like no other day that I have ever experienced at the Mak. The Kahawai have been less prevalent this year compared to the same time last year. But that was ALL ABOUT TO CHANGE. The day started off pretty normal with very little action for the first 2 hours. I finally hooked up to a nice 3kg Kahawai and happened to notice another large Kahawai tagging alongside the hooked one. That is nothing unusual as I had seen this happen before, but only with smaller Kahawai tagging along. I released this fish back in to the water only to notice 10-15 other Kahawai swim slowly upstream past me. I thought gees that's cool and as I looked further back to the Sea and across to the other side of the river, I happened to notice that the WHOLE RIVER was boiling with Kahawai. What an experience.
Back in the mid sixties,I was a young 16 catching them in the surf as the tide turned. They were so thick, they would brush past my feet.
good fun eh!, nice meeting you and your friend the other week! cheers Tim
Yep, it certainly is. Good meeting you as well.
Hey man I am just getting into watching your videos and it’s always nice to see a person uploading nz fishing vids, I frequently go to the river mouth there and have caught 1 good kahawai ( around 60 cm ). Anyway just wanted to say that I love the vids and please keep uploading. 👍
Thanks for watching it is really appreciated. Yes I will be uploading more videos very soon. Maybe I will see you at the mouth one day.

Hi. Other than Kahawai, what fish are we allowed to catch there without a license?
Hi there is Mullet, elephant fish, red cod.
What reel do you have and line please? Nice fishing!
Hi Jay, it is a Shimano Sedona C5500. I'm running 30lb braid and 30lb mono leader. Cheers
