Building a Wildlife Pond Part 1: How It Started
Вставка
- Опубліковано 28 вер 2024
- In 2022 I built this large wildlife pond in my garden with the hopes of helping and attracting more wildlife to my garden space. Expanding upon my previous pond build, in this video I start to create my new pond from scratch. Digging, lining and filling the pond before winter arrives, before finally starting the year over in 2023 and continuing to work on my pond ready for the next summer season.
Stay tuned for episode 2 featuring the summer of 2023!

One day, when I own a bigger garden, I will have a similar pond. Thanks for helping nature
Sounds great, do you have a pond in your current space? ☺️ thanks for watching
I will also make 😊,
@@OnlyNature
Nah, my back garden is only about 40 square meters. And I reckon there's not enough direct sunlight on most of the soil.
@@notorious1795 You can always do a small one. I have 3 small ones in the yard. All kinds of critters use them!
@@taramansion Yeahhhhh perhaps I could, but I won't.
My garden is still a small wildlife hotspot though, because of all the plants
Nice work, how impressive it is to see the different species. Thanks for
Thank you! It’s definitely been a great experience witnessing new species arriving in the garden and enjoying the pond. Glad I can share it with everyone 😊
We humans have been damaging the nature but people like you try to undo our actions.Really proud of you.Keep doing it.
One day I will also make a pond so that it could help wildlife and I could also witness beauty of nature from a closer view.😊
Thank you so much for the lovely comment! I definitely enjoy trying to help wildlife and nature as much as I can, and I hope my videos will inspire others to do so too. I’m sure your future pond will be great and I hope you get lots of wildlife 😊 Stay tuned for part 2!
Wow, this wildlife pond is amazing! So beautiful for many creatures to hydrate! (Watching from Ventura County, California, USA) 😊
Thank you, I'm very pleased with how it's turned out and even more so that the local wildlife is enjoying it too. Hello from England! 😊
Looks absolutely great. All that wildlife that turns up already. Can’t wait to get my one in the front garden when the wife is away!! The kids can help me too!
(The bigger the pond the more stable it is it seems in all these videos and research. Lots of gravel. No liner showing. Use underlay on top of the pond liner so it protects the black pond liner. Different sized gravel and pebbles and even some aquatic sand too. Planting pockets in gravel areas. All natives. Lots of shallow areas and just one smaller deep part in the middle.
Rainwater only as any tap water just adds on loads of nutrients that just imbalances the pond and feeds algae. Lots of hidey holes and a little bridge and stepping stones too. Gesture stone or two on edge/middle for a spot of interest).
Haha that sounds like your wife is in for a surprise! Definitely get the kids involved I’m sure they’ll love it! Great information too, sounds like you know your stuff, you’ve definitely done your research! Do you already have a pond or looking to build your first? ☺️
You will be lucky to avoid algae and stagnation without a bog filter.
Really show how the best thing for wildlife in a garden is a pond!
Interesting video, look forward to more!
Absolutely, water really brings so much life to a garden. Do you have a pond of your own? 😊
Thank you. Keep an eye out for part 2 coming soon!
@@OnlyNature yes, but it needs redoing as the liner has a leak, and its full of duckweed and dead leaves, but its still full of frig tadpoles and few inverts and attracts down the birds (and sadly the local cats)!
I wish i could do something like this one day
I hope you can! ☺️
This is amazing keeps us updated ❤❤❤
Very kind of you to say, thank you so much! I absolutely will, currently editing Part 2 as we speak 😊 Keep an eye out for it coming soon!
I love it❤
Great to hear!
Kudos to you. Making that by yourself only
Thank you! It was definitely challenging at times but lots of fun 😊
Niceee dude
08:21 The finches also like danelion seeds. You probably know this considering that you are into wildlife and have a lovely pond.
Yes! I actually only discovered this last year when I saw one eating a dandelion seed head! Great knowledge, thank you 😊
@@OnlyNature Your welcome.
lovely video, hope to see more updates !
Thank you so much! Part 2 is up now! ☺️
@@OnlyNature Yeaaah watched it already, youtube recommended it a few hours ago!
Built a tiny puddle of a wildlife pond 2 years ago but realised immediately need a big one (so easier to keep stable if and when fluctuations in algae and water quality etc) and the dog trashed it!
So front garden it is!!
Any tips much appreciated
Yeah that was definitely my experience too with my first pond! As for tips... you already seem to know your stuff, but maybe I'll put together a tips video sometime soon ☺️
amazing video thank you for making this. like the british stefano ianiro. what part of the uk are you in?
Thank you so much! That's a big compliment as I love his channel and he was definitely part of the inspiration for this video. Are you a fan of his too? I live in England ☺️
nice vid
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it 😊
Are you from the uk
Yes - England ☺️
@@OnlyNature thank you
Please only English to hindi video's... ❤
So many fox that's not safe for kids
What?? This is in a random forest, what kid will find this? And this pond is for natural not playing-
Can't believe this doesn't even have 200 views! The production quality is great and the vibes are just lovely.
If I had a garden, I'd love to have a pond in it. My mum has a small one, like, one of those plastic ones you put in the ground. It's just a simple way to make your garden more animal-friendly.
This comment has made my week! Thank you for your kinds words 🤩
Any water source is a great way of helping wildlife and definitely one of the best ways to attract all different kinds of wildlife. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you that you can get a pond one day… in the meantime, stayed tuned for part 2 ☺️
Some criticium I hope is constructive. I'm in a similar boat as you where videos seem to underperform. I'm taking notes to compare your video to the original that got 22 million. firstly the original video's thumbnail seemed to have better contrast, and for some reason day 1-100 is much more popular than day 1-300. He started the video with a shot from the tumbnail and started talking the second the video started, while you showed something that could have been saved until after the intro with some music. having the music play first and then starting talking seemed to abruptly change the mood of the video to me. your video starts off by showing your old pond instead of the pond you are going to be working on. His shows a quick overveiw of the new pond the video will be about, and then he gives background about his old pond. There is a bit of fluff that I wouldn't put at the start of the video such as pointing out that there are three foxes instead of saying a family of foxes, and saying the exact date, that it was durring a heat wave... ect. You also repeat things such as the last pond had a problem with drying out, however, you could have repeated this in a way that caused tension or drama, (like will the pond dry out???). As much as i like the Serpadesign voice-over it can run the risk of not introducing tension or loops that keep people engaged. the original also maintaned a much quicker pace than you did, he had finished building his pond at 2 minutes, and then started building other things. The depth you went into with the building prosses is more like a diy video than a "Here's what happened video. I love that you showed the fox checking out your work. A great way to introduse tension would have been will I be able to fill up this pond with rain water? and will there be enough water in my well to fill this pond?? Great job on the video and good job keeping recording on a project this long, keeping up steam over a long time is a big battle. a cool thing to do is say hey i noticed this on this day rather than here is a one month update.
Thank you for this! You’ve made some really great points here and I’ve tried to implement them in my next video which I hope to release later today. This style of video was definitely new and challenging for me, but hopefully I’ve learnt enough from it to improve in the future. I really appreciate you taking the time to write this and want you to know that’s it’s definitely helped me so thank you! Hope you enjoy the next video! 😊
Someone's been watching Stefano Ianiro 😉 Great stuff tho! summer update soon?
Thought the same thing
Great spot! I love watching his videos and definitely take inspiration from the way he nurtures wildlife. Yes, coming very soon… next week infact! 😊
@@OnlyNature Same here. Looking forward to the update!
@@OnlyNature can't wait to see it!you should definitely upload more video's,I love watching them.
So glad you’re enjoying them! Thank you. I definitely will. Hoping to get Part 2 of the pond series up in the next few days ☺️
i have a suggestion maybe you can add floating plants like water lettuce and whatnot then add small fish like minnows or chubs? adding some plants will add some protection to the fish and maybe birds and animals might hunt the fish
That's a great idea! I wasn't familiar with those plants until you suggested them so thank you! As for the fish, I've definitely considered it and may yet add some minnows ☺️
This guy is underrated, keep it up I really want to see more of this guy.
Thank you so much! I absolutely will! Working on part 2 now. Really appreciate the support 😊
I watched a couple videos on your channel and I can tell you are very knowledgeable about wildlife and other things in nature. Your hard work on this pond so far is outstanding in my point of view. I can’t wait for part 2 ❤
beautiful, keep updating please :)
Thank you! I will do! Part 2 will be coming soon ☺️
This is a beautiful pond setup! I live in Florida and recently added a ceramic pot with a mangrove that holds water, and i’ve noticed a variety of different birds stopping to take a drink! there is a pond right near my house but it also has alligators and snapping turtles, so they seem to appreciate a safe place to drink it’s honestly amazing!
Thanks for watching from Florida! I have been before and really enjoyed seeing all the exotic creatures there, Alligators included. I love that you're providing a safe haven for the birds too, great job! 😊
Inspirational... You've earned yourself a subscriber today! Now I'm drawing up plans to do something similar in my back garden whilst the kids are still young enough to appreciate having the wildlife here. What cameras are you using, and how are you powering them? I don't particularly want to run cables from the house right across the garden, but really would like them to catch all the action... Would love to see an equipment list if you have one?
Thank you so much! Sounds like a great plan. Around the pond I use trail cameras, they’re battery powered or even solar powered so there are no cables! So you can place them anywhere you want. I did a review of one that you can find on my channel and I’ve got another review video coming soon, keep an eye out for that one. When I’m filming myself in these clips I mostly used a GoPro for the Timelapse or sometimes even just my phone. I’ll try to do another video about my gear at some point if that helps 😊
Nice
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it ☺️
Really love watching videos like this. Thank you for building the ponds and for sharing!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it ☺️
Drill a deep well yourself , then you have unlimited water, even in drought, en can keep your waterlevel always perfect . At least that's how I do it .
Fortunately I’ve already got a well, which I used to make this pond. ☺️ Definitely agree it’s worth having for those looking into a new build!
Lovely pond! You could try to create and another bigger one like a mini lake and see what it does
I would love to, if only I had the space. Hopefully one day! 🤞🏻
Ooouuuhh yep so Good :0
I loved this video and the wildlife it has already attracted is so exciting. I really miss my pond in England, so I’m starting a pond in my new home in Ireland. The ground is very different though and full of rocks. Hopefully all the rain we get here will keep it filled though! I’m really glad I’ve found your channel. ❤
Thank you for the lovely comment! Sounds like that will be challenging with the rocks, but maybe you can use them in and around the pond to make some interesting features with ☺️ Good luck!
That trick of using carpet to protect the pond liner was clever.
Fish
Thank you!!! Wildlife ponds are my favorite UA-cam niche. Please keep the updates coming, I have subscribed.
Thanks for subscribing! I’m releasing Part 2 next week, stayed tuned ☺️
Is there anything else that can replace the black liner or carpet that is more eco-friendly?
Depending on your soil type, you can use clay to line the pond or a brick and cement render lining (similar to what is used in some swimming pools). I haven't tried either of those though, so worth some extra research before you make any decisions. Hope that helps!
👍
Is there a way to make a pond without a pond liner?
Great question! Yes you can and I know this is what some nature reserves do, but this is generally for larger ponds and you’d need to have enough clay soil to use as a base. I haven’t tried that myself, but if you give it a go I’d be interested to know how you get on 🤞🏻
Amazing!
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it. Stayed tuned for part 2 😊
What a fantastic project, a great reward seeing all the little visitors using it.
Thank you! It really is, glad I can share it with everyone ☺️
Good start
Good job
I built a small pond and it attracted so much wildlife I decided to do a giant one, then two more! It really adds soooo much to the yard as far as wildlife goes.
Wow that’s great and I can definitely relate! A small one is really good but I just had to make a bigger one too 😊
Fantastic video, the footage of the three foxes drinking from the smaller pond is brilliant!
Thank you so much! Yeah I couldn’t believe it when I first saw it. I knew there was a fox in the garden but never imagined three at once 😄
The Heron will enjoy the frogs but generally there is sufficient water in Britain.
Yes although it hasn’t been back since, but like you said they have plenty of other places to go and there is a much larger pond not too far from me where I often see them 😊
I love this! I’m so glad this appeared in my recommendations
I’m glad it did! If you love this one then keep an eye out for part 2 to see how much the pond has progressed! ☺️
I’m planning to do a small backyard mini-pond. It may be a little retirement project for me.
That sounds like a great idea ☺️ any size pond is great for wildlife! Will it be your first time making one? Happy retirement!
@@OnlyNature - yep, 1st one actually doing it myself.
Definitely give it a go then! Good luck with it! 😄
looks cool dude
Thanks for watching! 😊
❤ great vlog!
Thank you ☺️
