Turns out Reaper only switched sides because his Overwatch benefits package turned out to be a loot box and all he got was a spray.
"Okay, Reaper... You *could* take the money... Or you could take the mystery box!"
@@WarDragonOfTheLight Reaper: “The-box, The-Box!”
It sucks because the lore of Overwatch is actually really fun. The Terminators were stopped by G.I Joe but public perception forced the Joes into retirement and hiding. Now that Cobra is back and led by Terry Crews, the old Joes are bringing the band back together and adding new young superheroes to the roster. All the while Snake Eyes is trying to convince Storm Shadow to choose the right side, and the Terminators now just want to live a peaceful life but are being discriminated against.
It's fun stuff, too bad it's...well...Blizzard.
Yeah, I get what you mean. Remember a decade ago, when Activision could still take a weird risk and put out a Deadpool game, before he even got a movie? I played it and...I think they were ALMOST onto something great (the writing was MOSTLY right and the mechanics were at least on the right track), and I'd have LOVED to see what a sequel could have been. But..."Activision got an idea. An AWFUL idea. Activision got a wonderful, AWFUL idea."
Ever since Activision took over, it's like they keep coming up with good IDEAS, but then are forced to make really dumb decisions that ruins them. Shadowlands had a lot of potential to be something really cool, but it turned into a twelve-year-old edgelord's self-insert Mary Sue with no motivation, but he totally was the mastermind behind everything you guys. The lore got so borked that I quit WoW. I hear Dragonflight is a lot better, but I haven't tried to pick it back up.
Never been into Overwatch and didn't even know there *was* a story to it. When you put it like this, it does sound pretty awesome
@@newageprometheus And I didn’t even touch the fact that Australia literally became the Mad Max world featuring discount Joker.
It's ACTIBlizz so nothing like the original Blizzard
Watching Blizzard destroy their franchises and antagonize their fans is like watching your former best friend ruin themselves with drugs and being abusive to you and everyone else.
The Blizzard game I played the most was Heroes of the Storm so I know that feeling.
Someones not played dragonflight or diablo 4
@@ConnorNotyerbidnessI can't tell if I should worry or not
@@ConnorNotyerbidness Diablo 4 is an overpriced and boring grind, and Dragonflight doesn't make up for Warcraft 3 Reforged, Overwatch 2, or literally everything else they've done, both past and present
@ConnorNotyerbidness alright then, I guess we can forgive the abusive and sexist work environment that was so bad it actually caused a women to commit suicide
It's genuinely BAFFLING to me how Blizzard put out this ensemble of instantly iconic characters that clearly captured the public imagination (and, uh, arousal) and then just decided to let it die a slow death while they nickle and dimed their dwindling captive audiences. Like, there was SO MUCH they could have done with a bit more ambition and throughput. An animated series! Actual in-game storylines! SOMETHING!
The lament of lovers of lore in Yugioh.
That rant at the beginning about Activision-Blizzard's business practices would've made Jim Stephanie Sterling proud.
When you realize Reaper’s VA also voices Bloo in Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends. Try envisioning that people XD
You think that's weird?
In the Mexican Spanish dub, Reaper and Soldier 76 are voiced by Buzz and Woody.
You could say he HAD a friend in him...
Ah, yes, Emerald Twilight, the fall of Hal Jordan. That was on my AT4W wish list for years. I’m so glad you’re going to take a look and see if it’s still that bad, even after Cry for Justice and Heroes in Crisis.
I wonder if he'll mention other examples of women in refrigerators (That he has & hasn't talked about in the past)
I never felt like the storyline of the Overwatch Universe reached its full potential. Sure, we got tons of animated shorts and comics, but I always felt they were building up to something like, you know, Overwatch fully coming back together. It would've made a great TV show or comic series and I'm sad Blizzard didn't capitalize on it when the game was in its prime. Oh well. The franchise can always make a come back in some shape or form in the right hands.
Well, that is kinda the nature of those games. Just my opinion. Because if a story would be finished and all, what would be the point of new content and such if it technically got resolved already story wise, look at WoW, or nay other MMO, nothing is ever fully resolved because that would bean you have nothing left to do. Those games are made to be "endless" something live service games tried to push directly now and failed as we have seen.
I honestly liked the lore and setting for overarching. I went out for every little bit of lore in the character interactions. I liked that overwatch felt unique in that all of its heroes were science based and it was more "grounded" in reality in a way. Then Blizzard squandered it and even redacted that idea that I liked when no, kiriko uses straight up magic, as do Genji and Hanzo. My friend and I pointed out how weird it was that the only Magic characters were the Japanese people, and even with genji being a cyborg, all the Japanese characters were magic. They could've done so much with this idea but they decided to squander it instead
14:05 AKA Hal Jordan (unknowingly possessed by Parallax) going mad after the destruction of Coast City, resulting in Zero Hour and Kyle Rayner becoming Earth-One’s fourth (or New/Prime Earth’s fifth) Green Lantern.
It's funny as someone who was always more interested in the lore rather than the gameplay I somehow forgot how short these are.
Also the whole "Gabriel is Reaper" thing seemed way less on the nose back then too.
A big fan of the game story myself but also as a subscriber of the Jimquisition mainly thanks to your parody all those years ago; was waiting for you to bring the company’s horrible behaviour up ever since I saw the episode announcements.
Why are people still subscribed to Jimsquisition?
@@DarkOverlord96 because it’s a good resource for what’s going on in the game industry, going over controversies and tearing apart excuses made while also being quite funny
Pretty much, yeah. I'm a fan of Steph.
@@AT4W I am as well and I have your parody to thank for helping me give them a chance.
@@DarkOverlord96 because steph is an excellent journalist who's got a great sense of presentation. and honestly, watching her go from this angry, hateful persona to someone who manages to be goofy and positive even covering some of the darkest shit in the industry has been such a change. but hey, what do i know i'm just a trans weirdo too.
The thing at the end credits about nova she always got screwed with cancelations. She was supposed to be the MC for the cancelled starcraft ghost and then starcraft nova got canceled
Hey, I’m the guy from twitter who asked for retweets about the toxic abusive horrible behavior of Netherrealm Studios, something still massively under-reported, and I’m glad to see you calling out practices from similar monsters like Blizzard
Linkara and Josh Scorcher definitely are ones who would definitely point all the malpractice that is Activision Blizzard. Seriously folks, if they get bankrupt, it's their own damn fault
@@ejelecflametails6657 hope they do go bankrupt tbh, and I say this as someone with friends who enjoy Overwatch 2 (though of course play it without spending any actual money)
@@Cdr2002 Netherrealm is bad?! that seriously is news to me i do wish to learn about it more but lets be honest, the whole world is full of shady companies...gaming just seems to be nothing BUT companies with something off in one way or another
When the fuck did this happened?!
@@Otacon2099 “there’s only shady” companies isn’t an excuse. And yes, NRS is guilty of crunch, sexual harassment, toxic workplace behavior, traumatizing employees, and so on. You can google “NRS toxic workplace” and and find this information easily. Far too few people are talking about this and I have made it a personal mission to spread the word. I believe the best course of action is a full boycott of their products. That studio does not deserve anyone’s money or any benefit of the doubt.
I was also a Starcraft kid and lemme say that I am beyond disappointed at how the series and universe has been forgotten. I suppose they may come back to it some day and they could continue the story even if it ended on an overall positive note, but still part of why I loved it really is the lore and universe. Joins Star Wars and Star Trek as my favorite "star" franchises.
I remember when I played OW I played a lot of Reaper almost exclusively because he was one of the only characters who felt like they did actual meaningful damage in a game that was dominated by healing and resurrection. Coming from TF2 will probably do that though.
Speaking of Reapers “Lifeldian” gun, anyone else think the Blackwatch group he was part of, a proactive version of Overwatch, sounds like a 90s spin off that Lifeld would have been hired to draw?
Your Reaper voice is one of the coolest things I've ever heard
0:32
If you like Starcraft you should do a video covering some of the tie-in comics for it. Several of the short stories would fit right in on Longbox of the Damned.
Nice that you decide to do some Overwatch comics. As someone who has played Overwatch since it's inception, seeing it's rise and fall is jsut sad. It really is.
But yeah, Overwatch's lore is big but also a bit complicated. Since both of the comics focus on Ana aka Ana Amari, I find that nice. She was one of six individuals that served as the main team alongside Jack Morrison (Soldier: 76), Gabriel Reyes (Reaper), Torbjorn Lindholm, Reinhardt Wilhelm and Mina Liao. Though Reyes was leader, Morrison was known as the moral fabric and would become the defacto leader aka Strike Commander. There were also other members who joined the organization such as Angela Zeigler (Mercy), Winston, an ape that was part of an experiment on Horizon Lunar Colony, Lina Oxton (Tracer) and Jesse McCree. They were basically the ones who saved the world and brought peace after the Omnic Crisis.
But as for it's fall, it was due to a multitude of factors. The biggest being Blackwatch, a covert division under the command of former Overwatch leader Gabirel Reyes. It was basically the black ops division, not having to answer to Overwatch themselves. It was a four-person team consisting of Reyes, Moira O'Deorain, Genji Shimada and Jesse McCree. A mission in Rialto went downhill some time after an OW facility was attacked and the aftermatch exposed Blackwatch causing Overwatch's reputation to tank. Several other factors would happen as well that would ultimately lead to its disbandment.
I can go on and on but that is the gist of it. The point is that Overwatch's world is big with lore and it's a shame that Activision/Blizzard has dropped the ball with it. Nice job with the episode Linkara. Keep it up.
Overwatch really is a fascinating fumble on the story front since they seemed to give all these characters SO MUCH personality, hinted at this great story and interconnected web of relationships.
And then just utterly failed to really deliver on any of it.
And comics would have been the perfect medium to do it in. Like, genuine real deal comics. It could have been the G.I. Joe Marvel comics all over again.
13:59 Emerald Twilight, the one with the insane Parallax-controlled Hal Jordon with a bunch of GL rings all over his fingers on the cover for part 2. That ought to be interesting
Nice review and I do agree with the points you brought up. An issue I have always had with Overwatch the game is that because there was no story mode a lot of the lore was drip fed to us with 1’s life cycle basically being all prologue from a story pov. 2 could have done a lot to actually continue the story at a steady pace and give screen time to all their characters. Blizzard has always had the issue where big important lore stuff was in tie ins but it would have been nice to have the actual story be a part of the game.
Regarding Nova to my understanding while her game was cancelled she did have manga and novels written with her as the main character that fleshed her out, a few appearances in 2 and it’s expansions and got a 9 mission pack with her as the main character which was neat.
Emerald twilight has been long overdue.
I still love the theory that the game matches are actually happening in canon and Overwatch in-universe is basically pro wrestling of the future, in that none of the characters stay dead and they all have inconsistent contradictory backstories
"We're talking about Emerald Twilight"
WAT. Oh boy. Parallax time.
11:55
Reaper: The most insulting part of that plan is how disrespectful it is to Chester Bennington.
You know, now that I think of it, I'm surprised it's taken you this long to get around to dismantling Emerald Twilight. Especially considering that Parallax was on your "Top 15 Worst Heroes Becoming Villains" list.
Back when that list was made, Lewis wasn't considering covering events comics at the time because quite a lot of them were very good and wanted to focus on the crappier comics that existed because they were more interesting to cover (and most people back then were trying to emulate AVGN).
@@Pikachu2Ash Yeah, but he _did_ cover bad events, still. Amazons Attack was one of his earliest reviews.
@@RabblesTheBinx True but those were special cases because of how bad they were.
@@Pikachu2Ash Emerald Twilight is just as bad.

3:29 Lucio was one of my mains in both OW and HotS. I forgot who the others were in both games...
When people with access to Source Filmmaker and Blender are keeping Overwatch alive more then the devs.
I used to want to see Linkara cover these so very much. Especially since they were freely available to read. Alas, that desire was years ago. Years filled with broken promises, stupid reworks, infuriating nerfs, blatant bias for pros, a buyout by Activision, endorsing an authoritarian annexation, an alleged sequel, and a loss of hope.
Truly the story of Overwatch as a game and setting is a tragedy of wasted potential.
I still enjoyed these comics, and will watch this review, but I must vent on the frustrations.
The fact that I got a Overwatch 2 ad before the video starts makes this even better. I'm hoping the day will come where Blizzard sells the IP so someone better can handle the series. Dark Horse, IDW, or Image can probably do the series justice via comic books.
The game could use a Superman Analogue.
#FuckActivision
Emerald Twilight?! SCORE! ... I should make sure the ibuprofen is handy for this one.
I loved starcraft growing up and that's awesome lewis you loved Starcraft and Diablo 2 like I did because both games were really awesome and tons of fun at least in my opinion.
These comics are yet more evidence that Overwatch was always TF2 at home. The team fortress comics are... oh they're a rabbit hole
Shame it ended at issue 6
I honestly find it kinda unintentionally funny how last time you reviewed something that was basically-but-not-really porn (an ecchi manga) and now you're reviewing something from a series that at this point is really just know for all the porn it has.
Wait....Overwatch has a STORY?!!
All I got from those CGI movies were "something something something dystopian future something a robot ambassador being assassinated something a Brit woman with an ass of a goddess something a talking gorilla wearing glasses something AWESOME POWERS"
Yeah, I haven't played the games either
Looking forward to Emerald Twilight!
Imagine the last time THOSE words were said...
I remember as a kid we had a PC and a PS1 but a small budget so we replayed Blizzard games. I played some of the same games for 20 years and despite knowing all the secrets, twists, and builds, I still enjoy it. I was never good in Starcraft but I enjoyed playing Terran, loved hearing that alarm amd "Nuclear Launch Detected!"
Overwatch was pretty fun but I always had a strange situation in it. I'm not good at aiming in FPS, just bad in general and need a controller to play so I liked maining Junkrat. Oddly enough I was pretty good as Mercy, dodging bullets like Neo while panicking and doing a decent job as healer as I did my main job and survived most fights. My friends found it hilarious hearing me panic and somehow dance away from danger.
Preparation for next video: Parallax! Parallax! Parallax! Sinestro Corps pre-registration officially online XD
"Something I really enjoyed, but then they ruined it," the official motto of Activision Blizzard.
EMERALD TWILIGHT?!? Okay yeah that’s gonna be a big one
It's a shame that Overwatch was never turned into a movie or mini-animated series. Those shorts are pretty much mini-movies themselves, with interesting characters, great the world-building and lore, and just gorgeous animation. Seriously, this stuff feels like on the level of Pixar, back in the days when Pixar was great. With video game adaptations like Arcane, Castlevania, and The Last of Us managing to break the curse that has haunted the genre for so long, the time to jump in on this is about as perfect as it can get.
Great world building? None of the shit has any cohesion and there isn't even a clear antagonist with goals. I think you shit yourself.
Now we need the TF2 comics to compare.
It still baffles me that Riot put out an animated series based on their entirely competitive multiplayer game with deep lore presented entirely in outside material before Blizzard did.
Really loved your jokes this episode, genuine laugh out loud moments. Can’t wait for emerald twilight.
Considering the wait between some sequels in 2023, the wait between Starcraft and Starcraft II really doesn't seem so bad in hindsight.
Always good to see your kitties in the videos!
1:05 I have that game on the Genesis as well. Not a basketball fan at all but I enjoyed the hell of that game with my brother.
Emerald Twilight sounds like a title for MLP/Green Lantern crossover.
"Twilight Sparkle of Equestria, you have the willpower to overcome great fear. Welcome to the Green Lantern Corps."
3:29 I main Junkrat which resulted in my love for memes about the disease ridden vermin.
No office to those with Domesticated rattys pets are ok
Emerald Twilight... You know what means, the return of *Time 4 Backstory*
Wow. This came out quick.
I didn't know Linkara played StarCraft. I wonder which Campain was his favorite, and which he liked between regular and Brood War. Personally I've always loved the Protoss, because they're basically what happens when you make badass a racial trait in an RPG.
Really, when it comes to Fenix, the memes just write themselves. And a day where you haven't steered the Gantrithor on a collission course with the Overmind, is a day you haven't fully lived.
@@cdcdrr Heck, even unnamed probes and Zealots get in on the meme action thanks to the Legacy of the Void opening cinematic.
'' G.I Joe, but with a talking gorilla'' I'm not an expert on G.I Joe, not watch all the show or read the comic...but I'd be ready to bet money that there is, at some point in this franchise, a talking Gorilla. My guts tell me that's the kind of franchise where that's seem possible XD
You're right about the overkill, one should stop at killing flies with a revolver. Anything more is silly.
You know given their track record it's kind of not surprising everything Blizzard touches seems to turn into a apocalypse faster than you could probably even say apocalypse
*happy sniff* Seeing someone call out ActiBlizz’s bullshit. It shouldn’t be as shocking as it is, but it happens so rarely.
Very curious how much he's going to touch on the death and return of Superman to cover emerald twilight....
To this day, I have no idea why Overwatch 2 needed to exist.
Reaper having a gruffer Stan Lee voice is now a canon event
Hopefully, one of the Patrons will get you to reviews the short videos. They give you more lore and some are really good.
that rifle notches joke got me
14:17 Oh shit that comic.....
Presumably, what happened to the guy Soldier 76 took out is the same thing that happened to the Smartest Mook Ever in iron Man 3: he saw how outmatched he was and got the hell out of there.
Ana is very shocked by widowmaker presence because she was the wife of a major member of her team who was belevied to have been killed off by talon agents whlie in reality it was widowmaker herself who did it after by brainwashed by talon

Nice of the patrons to give you a few short ones.
The cat hearing patreon sponsored and decided she wasn't having any of that and bailed.
Great job dude and good on you giving activison a good one two punch. I agree the comics are okay and it does make me miss how the game use to be. Also emerald twilight I think that is the comic where hal Jordan goes evil which is good that it is finally making on the show.
Emerald Twilight...the Green Lantern storyline?
Yes.
ubisoft does a similar comic thing with rainbow six siege nowdays, a short comic released each season that links into the ongoing story
14:05-14:07: Emerald Twilight, the third enhanced Twilight where you can catch Rayqueza. LOL.
I never got into overwatch mostly because I just didn't care about battle royale games and till this day I still don't care about Battle royale, and honestly what made me not got into that game was well there was no singleplayer story mode that could get me to care about the lore which is sad because the blizzard entertainment I once knew growing up actually used to make great games and I cared about the characters like Jim Raynor Kerrigan and Tassadar and many of the other characters from Starcraft and Diablo, but now it feels like Blizzard Entertainment just doesn't give a damn about making good games anymore but just want to be greedy 24/7 and are now just a former shell of there former self which is just sad and depressing when you think about it that way at least in my opinion.
Oof, if Emerald Twilight is next and it's already being called "bad" and "a doozy" that's a bummer, it's personally one of my favourite comics. The hopeless spiral Hal goes through as he desperately fights the moral turn he can feel getting worse and worse, doubling down over and over because he think's he's too far gone... man, SO compelling imo. Parallax Hal was one of my favourite eras of GL stories, and his death and redemption in Final Night was one of the best I've ever seen.
I'll still watch, but maaaaaaaaaan I can tell we are not gonna have a similar opinion and watching you rip it to shreds is gonna be hard lol
As someone who's only know Overwatch through the роrn, I had no idea these characters there a thing (aside from the Widowmaker, of course). Isn't it a game about the girls with big butts?..
Wait. Next time is Emerald Twilight? THE Emerald Twilight storyline? The one where Hal Jorden goes crazy and kills off most of the Green Lantern Corp? The one that was so hated by even people at DC that it was eventually retconned in the mid 2000's? Oh boy. This one really iss gonna be a doozy, isn't it?
Yup.
Should point out that not everyone hates it. Im part of the camp that claims the only time Hal was interesting was his time as Parallax. There was after all a reason why he kept becoming a side character in his own book and why other Earth lanterns kept being introduced (he was boring as hell, just try to think of a single iconic Green lantern story prior to ET and i bet you wont find any).
Overwatch's slow death really killed a lot of the optimism about western games this generation. Blizzard owns a lot of that, but the community just degenerated to the point of insanity too quickly for a lot of us to cope with. All the negatives in gaming culture squished into a tiny space.
Speaking of insanity, I'm psyched to finally see Hal Jordon's infamous Heel-turn. (Heel Jordon? I'll workshop it.)
Wait does this mean a person could theoretically commission you to review the TF2 Comics?
Ya
I used to be really into the game. I was a Soldier 76 and Reinhardt main
funny story about Starcraft, it was actually supposed to be a Warhammer 40K game until the license holders for 40K dropped it and blizzard decided to build on what they had for a new ip. The Terrans were supposed to be the Imperium of Mankind (For The Emperor! and all that), the Protoss were supposed to be the Tau, and the Zerg were supposed to be the Tyranids.
As I understand, that is false. Warcraft was meant to be a Warhammer Fantasy game, but StarCraft was always originally supposed to be a SciFi spinoff of Warcraft that they decided to make it's own thing.
love that story about you playing starcraft
I thought linkara's main would be doomfist because of the "I AM A MAN" punch, hell he could even approach charecters like zenyata or bastion and say "you are an android; but I AM A MAN"
Having just finished The Serpant Sea in the Books of the Raksura series, I was very confused why Linkara was talking about the Emerald Twilight Court, until I remembered that Emerald Twilight was also a Green Lanturn storyline. Makes much more sense. (Watch nobody recognizing the book series I was talking about.)
I have a hard time getting in to competitive gaming . Doesn't matter the genre, weather its Pokémon, Street fighter, one of the Run and Gun games like Overwatch, Civilization VI, Minecraft. I get in tot he story mode , but multiplayer hits a few obstacles for me.
1. Knowing people I want to play with who also want to play with me.
2. Finding a large number of people who don't play at my skill level and cause failure or they make my victory too easy and there for less enjoyable.
3. Too many people play at a higher skill level, demanding perfection and stat calculations and Forstie to Invision every likely outcome of a conflict , demanding every one use knowledge of the game that takes time to learn and master and who take me out on the 1st turn before I can move.
4. They act rude . entitled, bossy, bratty, they troll, act like jerk, get political, make threats, act creepy, cross the line in any number of ways, create a toxic environment etc
5. They don't have time, there not free when I'm free, they ask for attention when I'm not free, they ignore messages and I end up having to solo.
Luckily games today have AI players, and connect to random online player and turn off voice chat, Son your not dependent on needing friends and you can't yell at each other. But I still find people who just don't know how to play.
Linkage would be a Brig player
I'd do almost anything to see Starcraft: Nova become real...
When Yong reported on the Blizzard abuse back in 2021, I deleted my batnet account I had since Starcraft 2 part 1. Co-op was my favorite game mode and celebrations included me drinking beer and blowing up Shakuras.
Now I’d love to see you cover the team fortress 2 comics I know that it’s hasn’t released the last one but I’d love to hear your thoughts on it
(I know I'm late but...) ALGORITHM ENGAGEMENT SQUAD... ENGAGE!!!
Overwatch, aka the Aven-G.I.Joe-ers
reaper's a linkin park fan? welp, he's my new favorite character. also, you think him and shadow got a contest going to see who can be edgier?
Emerald Twilight next, eh? Should be fun.
I've heard of shooting up, but actually shooting people with syringes is ridiculous
I mained Junkrat. Played for three years, trying to convince myself I was enjoying it, until one day it just suddenly clicked: I wasn't having fun. It was becoming more and more frustrating, and I thought back to those three years and realized it had always been frustrating. I raged at that game so much, or rather, at my inability to play it the way I wanted to. The mechanics of it just operated slightly differently than my brain expected, and for some reason I couldn't get used to it. So I quit. And I went back to TF2. And started having fun again.
This is not an "Overwatch bad, TF2 good" story. I did like OW for a while. But I just have so much more fun in TF2, it's wacky and it's what my brain is used to, so when I died over and over, I didn't get frustrated. Because the game operated exactly how I expected it to, so I knew for sure it was my own fault, or a quirk of the engine, or just bad luck. I knew what to expect. Also, the Heavy doesn't have a freaking tether to be completely invulnerable while he knocks people around like bowling pins at Mach 6.
I used to be really into Overwatch lore and kinda wondered if you'd ever do the comics so yeah this is neat that you finally got to them. To bad the game has become less interesting by this point, although now the lore is better integrated and more frequent.
Wait, a sniper that has 600X zoom? Wouldn't that make anyone throw up? The slightest twitch and the sight jumps around, and you couldn't actually see what you were shooting at, that far zoomed in.
