Navy Vet here. When I joined I was advised to use birth control since rape/ sexual assaults were at an all time high. Not once did I hear anything about what they were doing to stop this but they just wanted to make sure I didn't get pregnant. Dealt with several different types of harassment including sexual. When a fellow shipmate made a complaint about one man who was a Chief they just transferred him to a new command so her complaints wouldn't be deemed as valid anymore since he couldn't do it anymore. It all got swept under the rug. It's truly disgusting and this story makes me so sad.

At my high school, my friend and I made a documentary about SA in the military for our senior project (2019) Almost no one was willing to talk to us. Most would only speak off record (and victim blame) and we were actively threatened by people. Our teacher made us pull back after the threats but we knew we had stumbled into something. Luckily, we knew to back off but to this day I get chills thinking about how some people were smiling while telling us they would pretty much make us disappear. I will never let any of my children enter the military.
Edit: Some of our classmates did their documentary about SA in the Catholic Church, we still got to release our documentary but they were told by the school and archdiocese that they couldn’t release their doc because too many names had been disclosed. They released anyway and we had to have extra security at our school for a bit so that was fun. In order to release ours, we had to change people’s voices, not disclose names, and remove “graphic conversations”. Most memorable moment was when we talked to a lawyer who handled SA in the military. She switched from prosecution to defense and talked about how most women were “asking for it and they should know better since they are in the military. They could stop it if they wanted to!” It was very eerie.

My husband was going to be stationed at Fort Hood in 2011. I made a mistake, and it became the best mistake I ever made. He was in basic training and they all got their stations. I got a packet in the mail about fort hood Texas so I went on the Facebook page that the family members of the men in basic training made and I asked them if they received anything and told them I got a packet about fort hood. The sergeant messaged me and told me I was not allowed to do that and my husband called me and was mad that I did but I honestly didn’t know I couldn’t post about where he was going. I was new to the whole process. Well, they ended up changing his station from Fort Hood, TX to Fort Drum, NY. So that mistake kept us from ending up at Fort Hood.

Army Veteran here. This give me chills and makes my stomach turn still to this day, because it is absolutely true. The culture has been to silence and harass the victim. While in Afghanistan, they even issued us “rape whistles” and to travel in buddy teams because there was plenty of sexual assault going on. I even had a close encounter with a solider from Fort Bragg waiting outside of my bee-hut (sleeping area) when he knew the other female soldiers were not there. Come to find out, he was sent home early after that for prosecution because he raped another female soldier. This is REAL. I encourage anyone who knows someone serving, please talk to them often. Let them know they’re not alone regardless of how far away we may be from you if they should ever need anything. I don’t care how annoying it can get for them. STILL DO IT. Show them this documentary too. Be our constant reminder. Please. Because sometimes we may become numb to the surrounding stress and suppress what’s going on to avoid a mental breakdown or to avoid harassment from leadership or others in uniform who don’t deserve to wear it. MUCH LOVE TO Vanessa and her family. I think about you often and I will continue too my sister in uniform ❤️

As a veteran, myself and was stationed at Fort Hood in 2007, I knew Fort Hood was bad news when I arrived there. Everything the Army sweep under the rug in the past is finally coming out. I lost a friend of mine from his leadership bullying him. His leadership bullied him to the point of him committing suicide. There are more criminal activities happening in the army that CID (Criminal Investigation Division) hasn’t thought about investigating. CID is a joke because their investigation of importance are underage drinking and drug use. Serious crimes aren’t CID’s number one priority. For young men and women considering enlisting in the Army has to consider their own safety from their fellow soldiers. Especially army leadership. This is the reason the Army is having trouble with recruitment. Heck the entire US military has trouble finding recruits.

Crimes that happen to the missing and to MANY humans within this setting is absolutely maddening.
They should never be able to get away with such disgusting behaviour, obvious cruelty and disrespect. No matter your gender or country.
These crimes need to stop, punishable by forfeiting your job and title. Harsher punishments and permanently on official listing and on police officers radar. In the system, so if anyone crosses that line again... instantly put back to prison.
