On "Vacant", James LaBrie interprets all the undescriptible sensations he was going through when his daughter went on that sudden coma. Then, on "Stream Of Consciousness" the rest of the band interprets all the drama going through LaBrie's mind at that time. That's the way I see this two amazing songs, that's what I imagine. Thanks for share this.
It's amazing how a song that's almost completely instrumental can tell an entire story with enough emotion to bring me to tears. Dream Theater is truly the best at what they do.
Never noticed how you could interpret Vacant as a loved one dying, or as a loved one losing interest in you, or even as the experience of ego death. Stream of Consciousness follows up as a fit of confused emotion regardless of how you hear Vacant. Because the experience, the fear, the confusion of imminent loss is the same either way. This is the genius of this piece. Regardless of it's intended meaning, it cuts deep into a core, root sensation that is experienced in a multitude of ways.
falling back to the listener experiences and feelings, not only the artist's without speaking once during its execution, as words are followed by actions, or they mean nothing. you are free to let it wrap you on the path, facing past and future with both nostalgia and duty towards them. the flow is relentless, the past matters as long as it affects future. the tone changes relentlessly, bringing a greater extent on the inevitability of self thought forever shaping itself this screams jazz influences all over the place, the improv is palpable even if it's a record song. an artistic and technical masterpiece on all sides
I listened to this song almost nonstop last November. A very dear member of my family fell ill and unfortunately went into a state of vacancy before passing on. A year later and Vacant still brings tears to my eyes and Stream Of Consciousness mirrors the sadness and rage one experiences at times like this.
Vacant, besides its original meaning, may also refer to that state/stage of loosing your own consciousness; that awareness of your experience while still being awake, falling into infinity, fading away from anything that matters..
this is why DT is truly one of the best musicians out there, their music and lyrics are not "just ordinary music & lyrics", but they also often have something DEEPER and MEANINGFUL to say (in their music & lyrics) ! glad that there are at least still some people in this world/planet who are smart & deep enough to realize this~
Niki Wonoto what pisses me off is that people truly believe things below quality like this is made by true musicians because what is below, if it isn't heartfelt or ascendant in it's quality, how can it be referred to as real music when these guys put their hearts and sould into every single fucking part, seriously, they're what music truly is, they represent everything that music is truly meant to be
I first heard this album in high school about 20 years ago and was instantly obsessed with every song. Start to finish it's one of the greatest albums ever released
And the craziest part about these songs is that they evoke fear, and pain, but love more powerful than those harsh emotions man, God I swear I fucking love them
why don't the music folk award them with some kind of special award?! perfection award, innovation award, sophisticated award, craziness award seriously!!!
Satan and God United and possessed Petrucci when he did that guitar solo and the world began to realize it isn't so fucked anymore through rock and rolls ultimate ascension within dream theater
Considered the meaning of these two tracks combined, Vacant and Stream of Consciousness are one of the last truly inspired works of Dream Theater one can mention from their last years of activity. The lyrics of Vacant are the perfect prelude for the stream of consciousness happening inside the mind of the relative of a loved one in health danger...I experienced this directly and I can totally relate to these songs. Plus, the story behind the origin of SOC is really interesting, very creative. Great music here, I am sorry they are now some kind of Roadrunner puppets. At least they wrote good stuff once
+PulsTheCat You're goddamn right. but l personally must admit that listening and re-listening the post systematic chaos works, you can find light reference of this goodness. I like 'til l'm dead this pair of songs.
@@martinofenzi858 First MP rejoined Dream Theater in October 2023 and then they played these two songs live. I was stoked to hear these in person! Finally they're back!
Among the most meaningful instrumentals in the history of music. That is a fine example of who Dream Theater were in their prime years and ended with Score as a celebration. While their last 4 albums were amazing in musicianship, not counting Systematic Chaos as it has its brilliant moments, they lack the spirit and inspiration demonstrated in this track, and that of course is something logical. They did their cycle as every 30 year old band would do.
I first discovered dream theater when i was 13 which is almost 16 years ago which incidentally was when Train of Thought was released give or take but i first listened to Awake which was released 2 years after i was born and it inspired me to take up drumming too so yeah, people that age do listen to prog :D
They're not terrible songs but it's not DT playing to their strengths. They don't do simplified heavy metal very well as much as they do intricate prog-nerdy neo-Rush metal.
Just like you said, As I Am and This Dying Soul are excellent. Endless Sacrifice is great, Honor Thy Father is ok, Vacant + Stream Of Consciousness is a masterpiece and In The Name Of God Is on the level of As I Am and This Dying Soul
Love this song but sometimes they don’t know how to show restraint ngl, they’ll be all over the place when the song would flowed better if they didn’t try to speed blitz it that’s just my opinion tho
okay I understand not liking his voice but you've got to at least recognize his talent. I'd like to see you his the f# in learning to live like he can ;) but hey everyones entitled to their own opinion :P
Same chord progression. The melodies are similar enough but the chord progression is dead on minus a few transgressions but its setup like a fugue, mystically, potently, powerfully. Always honor these two songs man, Dream Theater understands what real music is, but this fucking took the cake and just manifested music in a way it hasn't been able to ever, this hits exactly the way you need it to hit you and it hurts but feels good and at the same time, immerses you deep, the vibes, the purity, this is true music, the music that is power from beyond

Wow , I never knew before that these 2 songs basically based on a real life experience from James LaBrie...
It's amazing how a song that's almost completely instrumental can tell an entire story with enough emotion to bring me to tears. Dream Theater is truly the best at what they do.
I only right instrumentals now, but Vacant is such a great lyrical song. Stream is just f*ckig awesome.

it's not amazing. it's sad - for it's rarity
Thanks, these two songs belong together. I really wish they did Stream of Consciousness after Vacant on Score with the orchestra.
Yeah, a missed opportunity for sure

There should be a law that forbids playing these two songs separately from each other.
There should also be a law that prevents youtube from placing an ad right in between the two!
@@mikesmith1290 Agree
Oh damn you here?
happy to tell they play it like this at 40th anniversary tour :)

Niki Wonoto you should listen to tool
I know this is about an illness but I am watching someone fall into an addiction and this song just hits so hard for that.
Still, after many years without listening to this, I remember this whole song from beginning to the end. :)
Same here, since 2007..

The greatest song ever written.

Sin duda! El mejor instrumental de Dream Theater!

the best of DT

I think it was a mistake to separate these songs. Should be just one song in my opinion.
They are.
This is like Pink Floyd´s
"The happiest days of our lives" and "Another brick in the wall part 2"
Like "Wait for Sleep" and "Learning to Live."
Like Parabol and Parabola
Like the Glass Prison, This Dying Soul, The Root Of All Evil, Repetence and The Shattered Fortress.
Love this song so much, just perfection.

Look, both vacant and stream of conciousness are great songs separately, but together they're both a lot more powerful.
Comparable cómo si se escuchase una sonata ... Simplemente un gran tema
Absolutely LOOOOVE this song! James LeBrie is an amazing singer ♥

My favorite part of the song was 0:00-14:14

I have to say "As I Am" and "This Dying Soul" are excellent tracks. "Honor Thy Father" is ok. "Endless Sacarifice" is a godly epic imo
