I had to take the time to congratulate you for this amazing "How to Play". You hit the nail with your methodical, paused oratory style with the bonus of showing how to do it with playing examples. So many channels out there promissing clear reviews, with special effects, acting, comedy, wasting the time of viewers that just want a truly clear tutorial and fail to make what they promised in the first place. Excelent video. You deserve much more subscribers, have no doubt about that. Subscribed.
Wow! I'm glad you like this style of video. It takes me bit longer to create a video than most, but comments like this keep me going with this style. Thanks so much!
Wow! that is so nice to hear. I am working on more as we speak. I have one more video in my Gloomhaven series and then onto a new game. Thank you so much!
Just picked up Root and it's one of the more complicated games we've played, so we were struggling to pick up on some things. This video and the followup one really helped clarify a lot. Hands down the best quality How To board game video I've ever watched. This style is very easy to follow and the examples are very clear and understandable.
Great job! Easily the clearest and most accurate rules explanation of Root I've seen. One gotcha that I ran into while learning was with dealing extra hits when battling in a defenseless clearing. Extra hits are not limited by the number of attacking warriors. For example: in a clearing where one Eyrie warrior is attacking a sawmill and two lumber and the roll is 3 & 1, the Marquis player will lose two items of his choice. One from the warrior and one from the extra hit.
I'm planning to play Root for the first time soon and have found this video very useful and informative as a beginner. Really well explained in stages and clear images showing examples of play - thank you very much for this, and I'll be pointing any other beginners to this video. I'm looking forward to checking out the rest of the channel. Nice work.
Thanks! I purchased Root as a Christmas gift for my super game savvy husband. I’m determined to level the playing field by learning how to play enough to provide some competent rivalry. Really liked your walk through!!!
This is fantastic. I've just sat through the first few minutes of a couple of other Root explainers that talked at 100 miles an hour with very little thought for the structure of the info, and my brain seized up. Here you nail both. I think those other videos were maybe concerned about length and rushing, but if it takes 18 minutes plus video two, that's how long it takes. Great job.
Nice video. Can't wait for the faction video. Years ago I watched your Star Wars LCG videos when I couldn't quite understand the rules. My son and I still play and enjoy the game thanks to your videos!
Glad to hear you're still playing the Star Wars LCG. My sons and I had a great time playing that one, but I haven't played that for a few years. Thanks!
Thank you so much! The instructions for this game are honestly a huge downside, as they are so nebulous and the separated rulebooks make it so hard to pick up. Really appreciate your time
As everyone said, super cool videos. Examples, vocabulary are extra clear. Animations are cool. Simple and efficient. Thanks for this content, keep it up. Im gonna check for scythe and gloom haven now! Absolutely subscribed
Thanks Steve!. Glad you like my special pronunciation of Marquise :) You can attribute my special pronunciation of this to the trouble I had making this sound half way decent during recording. So "Markus" seemed to roll off the tongue better for me. So I stuck with it :).
Root due its assimetry mechanics is quite hard to play. Rules are a bit messy and several nuanses like "who controls the clearing" are not so obvious. Thanks for this video it clearifies such moments! Looking forward to next video on Root:)
Thanks John! The token trays are actually small restaurant dishes, like you would put a sauce on the side, I found on Amazon. I actually just found the link (sorry it's a long one) www.amazon.com/Delling-Ultra-Strong-Ceramic-Dipping-Dishes/dp/B07GJ9S1DW/ref=sr_1_3_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=soy+sauce+dishes&qid=1625101885&sr=8-3-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUE3M0RXWklKM1hBVk8mZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTA2MTE1NDYyWlRVQVdISFZIRkxPJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTA3MDU4ODQxNjZFWDJNMkIzTUFQJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==
Drink idea: 2 parts sweet tea, 1 part (lipton?) green tea, 1 part lemonade, like a palm full of shaved pickel juice ice, mix in a little with a third of a vanillia flavor shot
As RogueNinja stated, I just have to take the time myself to say this was an excellent tutorial. There are so many out there, but this ranks easily as no 1 with its; *see lest below described by Ninja ;)
Thanks so much Danny! I’ll work on my pronunciation of this one :). I’ve heard also that the pronunciation is a bit different depending on whether the cat is male or female?
Oh I was looking for this comment! Sorry to add to this a year after this video but if you pronounce Marquise The Cat quickly (with the correct french pronounciation) you get Marquisethecat. Or Mar-kitty-cat.
For anyone willing to help, are the walkthrough cards and instructions provided by the game just for example? For example, the instructions say to draw specific cards for each player instead of drawing three random.
Can ambush card can be played to remove the opponents building or tokens? Because it states if an ambush card removes all of the attacker's warriors, the battle immediately ends.
To everyone commenting on how to pronounce marquise... He is talking English, not french. People seem to get hung up on foreign pronunciations, but a lot of English words were taken from other languages and then anglicised into an English version. It is called the evolution of language. Every language borrows from others. I prefer to pronounce it 'mar-kwis'. Be assured that next time I'm speaking French and have to say marquis, I will do so accurately.
Modern Cardboard im confused about 9:49 - resolving the battle phase... In the rules it says 4.3.4 - Step 4: "Deal Hits. Each hit that a side deals removes one piece of the other side from the clearing of battle. The side taking hits chooses the order in which their own pieces are removed..." So in this case the cats have 2 warriors and the birds have 2 warriors too. The cats attack with a 3 and the birds defend with a 2. So when the 1st cat deals the 1st hit, it removes the 1st bird warrior... So now the birds can only deal 1 hit - because they have 1 warrior left, so they only kill one cat - not 2. Right? Because that is not what you show in the video...
So the order is talking about the order of buildings & tokens taken only after the warriors have been removed as per the hits on the dice. In the rules section 4.3 - Summary: Roll both dice. The attacker will deal hits equal to the higher roll, and the defender will deal hits equal to the lower roll. The attacker and defender deal hits simultaneously. They must choose to remove all their warriors there before they choose to remove any of their buildings or tokens there in any order. Step 2: Roll Dice and Add Extra Hits. Roll both dice. The attacker will deal hits equal to the higher roll, and the defender will deal hits equal to the lower roll. If the rolls are equal, attacker and defender will deal the same number of hits. (The use of “will” here reflects that hits are not dealt until step 3.) Then Step three:Step 3: Deal Hits. Attacker and defender deal hits simultaneously. Each hit you deal removes one piece. The player taking hits chooses which of their pieces are removed from the clearing of battle, but must choose to remove all their warriors there before they choose to remove any of their buildings or tokens there in any order. (You score one victory point per enemy building or token removed.) I hope this helps!
I'm disturbingly dialed into Root considering the fact that I don't own the game. Assymetric gameplay is one of my favourite things in videogames and it's generally an incredibly rare game mechanic, even outside of vidya. Since I love assymetric war games, and since I exclusively play boardgames with women who love cute shit like Wingspan, I feel like Root should be a logical next step for a choice in games.
Thank you for teaching a board game without feeling the need to be quirky and add a bunch of distracting jokes that aren't funny and just make it harder to understand what's going on.
people pay for this 'art'.....amazing they can pawn off little kid bad art and charge hundreds for it...good video though....crap in a box sux..digital way better
Marcus Da Cat is all I hear now when talking about the cats

your production quality and easy to understand approach to games is an inspiration. Thank you. And please do continue... :)
Thanks so much Emre! I appreciate it and plan to keep at it!
I've watched this three times now. I think I'm ready to teach the game. 👍
Excellent! The part that took me the longest to learn in this game was definitely the Vagabond. That scoundrel :)

Super clear!
I was watching this video prior to buying the game and reading the instruction, but I might not need to read them after all.

@@ModernTablegamer Does the Digital version of the game play the same as the physical version ??
The succinctness and specificity in the word choice for the explanations is on point.
I really appreciated this video. In my situation, I was trying to get a handle on how to play this on Steam, and this really worked for me! Thank you!
Found a gem. Keep making more please. Especially for heavy games! Hope to see Oath soon
Hi Amit, thank you and thanks for the recommendation also!

amazing, thank you for taking it so slow and steady to give us time to absorb everything!
Fantastic video. Extremely well done. Thank you once again.
By the way, I love your sound effects!
Hi Alex! Hope all is well and thanks for the kind words!
Appreciate the effort u put in while making those animation, it is helpful for learning about the game.
Thank you so much! The instructions for this game are honestly a huge downside, as they are so nebulous and the separated rulebooks make it so hard to pick up. Really appreciate your time
AND COST of cardboard with horrible art!
Such a delusional small minded comment xD The art is godlike dude. Go back to you IA generated hentai 🤪
Oh man I already complimented you on your PP video and now you made a video for my favorite game of all time! Great work!
Awesome! I was hoping that was the case. Thanks for the comment!
I hope this guy is okay been 2 years since his last video and i view is gaming explanations to be the most helpful ive watched
Spectacular. Well made, informative, entertaining. Will recommend this to my fellow rootians before play.
Well done video. Thank you for clearly explaining how to play Roots. Subscribed because I'm anxious to see what else you'll create.
Perfect timing! My copy arrived yesterday! As always, great stuff!
I knew that and had this planned... ;) But seriously, glad you got this one and thanks for the comment!
Thank you very much! Both videos were very easy to follow and you made the rules super clear.
Great how to play love the attitude its not to jumpy/loud nor moody/sad perfect
Wow! Thank you!

@@ellismccoy no, it's Mar-keez. Feminine.
Shout outs to Marcus of Queensbury from Mike Tyson Mysteries. Watch it!

The first couple times I had this to the table, it took me a while just to wrap my head around what the other factions were up to.

Does the mobile version play similar to the physical one ?

Marcus da Cat lol
So at about 10:30 when marquise de cat had 3 it wouldn’t remove the roost as well?
Who is Marcus bro ?
Can ambush card can be played to remove the opponents building or tokens? Because it states if an ambush card removes all of the attacker's warriors, the battle immediately ends.
Lol, Marcus Da Cat
My version of Root says "warrior" at 13:00 instead of plural. Was this a balance update? Can I spend 2 cards to save 2 warriors?
So you don't lose any piece when crafting? You don't lose sympathy tokens, workshops, or roosts?
"Marcus the cat"
To everyone commenting on how to pronounce marquise... He is talking English, not french. Can I play two dominance cards?
Good question. I just did a quick rules check and there is nothing that says you can't that I can find. Can anyone confirm?
my guess is that you won't be able since you can't complete the action of removing your scoring marker, it has been already removed
really complex game, honestly I changed my mind on it
Did you stop playing it?
If I eliminate enemy soldiers are they allowed to be put back into to play later?
Yes, this is a huge mechanic in the game that can save the blue birds from turmoil in their recruit stage (actually hoping to lose).
With that "inflict wounds" language, I'm guessing you play warhammer, lol.
mark-eeze de cat... :)... I believe...
Marquise is pronounced mar-key not mar-kiss. excellent tutorial though
That's marquis not marquise
