    As an ex-interior designer from Australia, I couldn't agree with you more. The number of times I've explained this to people.... 🙄... 😂😂 A lot 'designers' don't want to be 'downgraded' to decorators 🙄 oh the humanity 😂😂😂😂

      I agree!! I'm a recent graduate and I get so mad when people want to talk about decorating all day or show me all these decorating shows. Like excuse me I didn't pull all-nighters, get stained teeth from all the coffee I drank, and took about 5 years off my life from the stress to be reduced to a decorator.

      @@monkeypox3147 Exactly my point ✅✅ ✅ despite my design expertise, I would even say that 95% of my projects were mostly decoration. In my experience, a lot of wannabe designers, or rather 'designers' look down on decorators. IMO they don't appreciate decorators or actually understand the processes used. As qualified designers, we should utilise decorators as our mentors and guides ☺️

    I studied to be an interior decorator and we do study space planning, building codes, floor plans drawings, etc, but not to the level of Interior designer. I think Interior Decorators complements Architects very well. My humble opinion ;)

      Thank you for clarifying. Yes many do probably get some kind of experience or education in those areas but I agree you get a lot more with a 4 year degree plus the expectation that you will pass the CIDQ and that you will know that stuff when you start work at a firm.

      Wow I'm trying to find a course for interior decorating but there all labeled interior design and I can't tell if it's actually interior design or not. It seems like people are kind of confused about what you can really do with a design degree. I graduated with my BS in ID over 30 years ago. If you are interested in interior design as a career path, but not sure about it, consider the fact that you do not have to go the way of residential design. You can also focus on commercial/contract design. There are lots of options in retail, educational, office/corporate, healthcare and many other industries that designers work in every day! The salary is good and the work is just as enjoyable. Sometimes better! You can work for design firms, consulting firms, furniture manufacturers, textile manufacturers, corporations, universities, etc. lots of opportunity and lots of places to learn more.
    If you are solely focused on residential that’s okay, too. You just need to decide how you want to educate yourself and what level of expertise you want to have in order to be the best you. Also, skim the job opportunities out there now for entry level positions and see what is required. Do they want a 4 year degree or will something like an associates degree suffice? Before you jump in feet first, it’s better to know these things. Also, talk to the guidance counselors at some schools. Or, take some time to network with owners of local firms. It will help you later! Good luck. Whatever you decide to do is a step forward. Just be sure you are sure what you are getting from your education is what you need to be a success. 😊 Best of luck.

      Stay humble and listen to the client's tastes. Learn the mathematical/logical pattern side of decorating and bringing things together. Its like a piece of music, the key each instrucment plays in, if it changes key theyre changing together, certain motifs get played by different instruments at different points but brings that relation. Ngl that could either make sense or absolutely not at all. If your into classical music it may be useful - apologies of this is all useless advice.

      Interior Designers go to universities and get a 4 year degree. From there, they can get accredited from CIDQ just like an. Architect or an engineer can be accredited in their fields and from their accrediting organizations. A decorator can call themselves a decorator with zero education or qualifications and hang out their shingle for their business. Not to discredit them, there are many talented decorators. However, the qualifications are not the same nor are the jobs.

    • @nisamae2
      @nisamae2 5 місяців тому

      @@ltldxy71 Sounds like you're trying to discredit them, lol. You still have to have a certain amount of knowledge and put in a lot of work to be a great interior decorator. It's not just so called "talent". Ever considered that?

    • @nisamae2
      @nisamae2 5 місяців тому

      It depends on you. If you're knowledgeable and good at what you do, or if you're poor/ mideocre...

    • @ltldxy71
      @ltldxy71 5 місяців тому

      @@nisamae2 I agree that it requires talent and knowledge to be a successful decorator. But, the skills, knowledge and education required to be a licensed and accredited Interior Designer are not the same. While selecting finishes might be part of the process, it is only a portion of what a designer does. As part of obtaining a degree, Interior Designers study human factors, construction, art history, design history, building codes, sustainability, innovative design practices , technology, productivity, economics, color theory, space planning, programming, landscape design, lighting design, visual merchandising, ergonomics, health and safety, acoustical design, universal design/ADA, retail design, healthcare design, office design, textiles science, chemistry, wellness practices, and more. In particular, commercial interior designers have far different jobs than residential designers who do tend to focus more on finishes and style. I believe that is what is being compared here in this conversation.
      That said, commercial/contract designers can move into other roles and career paths with additional education, experience, and training.
      Let’s be clear…Decorators decorate. Their focus is on the aesthetics, style, and overall experience and presentation of a space for their clients. They can do beautiful cosmetic work. Many do lovely, clever projects I would never imagine in a million years. But do not confuse a Decorator for an Interior Designer. They do not have the same education, expertise nor share the same career path. This is why, state by state there were laws passed around the time I was an ID student to protect the field of Interior Design and to clarify the differences and confusion between two similarly named job titles but very different professions. This not only protected designers but more importantly it protected the clients. Many of whom still to this day do not know the difference because people still want to call themselves a designer when they are not, should not and legally cannot do so.
